Thanks for the vid! You're right...there isn't much content on these lathes. I actually have one with every conceivable option except for a follower rest. Options I've never even seen before. It came with two steady rests. The reeves drive needs some attention, but it's not unrepairable.
I have the 14 in with clutch and rpm bar on the carriage. I have an rpm read out on the top. Mine came with an air operated 5c collet system that I sold for about $600 dollars. Also came with 4&3jaw, and steady. No problems $2400. Was able to sell my 11 in Rockwell for $2200 delivered. I do like it.
Thanks for this, I just looked at one last weekend in my area and it is stripped down with only a three jaw. Asking price is 2,500. I really appreciate you showing this. I was wondering about the gear that has the two tabs on it. The brass piece that slides in the grove was all worn away. You video does a great job of explaining what is happening.
So it sounds like the ears rounded off and they were using the knob to hold it/force it to stay in direct drive? $2.500 is too much for base machine. More like 1,200 assuming the gears are ok and it's just a little mill work that needs done to square up the ears on the clutch half and a new ring to fit the smaller ears after you square it up. But if there asking $2,500 then offering $1,200 would prolly just insult them! My price is a New York to Virginia area price... obviously if someone lived in Alaska and they found one near by then it may be worth that and them some...I figure people know there area and what to add/subtract on/off that price.
Have you had the back gear apart? I am in the process of gearbox oil change and found a bolt at the bottom of the case. It appears it came out of the right hand side of the back gear shaft holding the gear on. Now I have play left to right because that gear is loose. I have not found the washer yet. I can’t seam to get the room to simply put the bolt back in without taking the back gear assembly completely out
Have a question for you, the pully on the end that drives the spindle with the two belts on my 14 in Rockwell will move back and forth about 1/8 in. how is the pulley secured to the spingle so I can tighten it up, any help is appreciated thanks.
@@ke6bnl Sounds like your clutch half ears are wobbled out. I show it in this video. Pop the top off and give it a wiggle you'll see what's doing it. If that's what it is you can true up the ears on the gear half but you have to make a new ring with slots that will fit the smaller ears that you squared up. You may be able to weld each side of the slot and re machine it to fit the smaller ears.

I don't know what the problem was I just went and cleaned and lubed everything under the headstock and when I turned it back on the problem was not there any longer. what every it was was sent a sound up to the end of the spindle and that is what I assumed was the problem. You great work and go much deeper then I would ever to do these repairs, good job.
What they did with those 2 gears boggles my mind. I mean, you have to think that any person using the machine would have to be a machinist right? So, they should f-ing KNOW BETTER than to do some garbage like that and further destroy the machine. It just boggles the mind I say.

How much does this machine weigh? It's style reminds me a lil bit of my 2557 logan. Just bigger and heavier

You mean the pully in line with the chuck? You mean the pully will move 1/8" before the chuck will move?
