Hi. So this is about releasing a cover song with a licence so you don’t get into any issues or have the song taken down. DistroKid have an option for getting the licence and helping you with this. You can upload covers but also this will generate a licence to have it on CZcams so if you then re-upload it to your own CZcams channel, you might get an email saying someone else owns the copyright to this.. but that is you. You can also opt out to not have DistroKid put it on CZcams but still be available everywhere else. My advice is get the info from DistroKid directly and reach out to there support channels. They are very helpful. 👍🏼

I did as I wanted the video of the song available on Streaming services. So the video is the primary and if people ‘want a copy’ then it’s there on iTunes, Spotify etc. hope that makes sense. 👍🏻
How come there are a lot of songs out there where lyrics have been changed, for example, Johnny cash covered hurt by nine inch nails, some of the lyrics were changed and the arrangement melody was changed, does this make it a remix? A derivative version? Was Johnny cash not able to make any money from it? How about weird Al, does he not make any money from his parodies?
They are all very good questions. If you make a cover your own, it’s still a cover and the ruling (don’t know if it’s changed) is 7 notes or more that are the same. That’s why there are so many disputes with artists. I’m sure Johnny Cash and family got paid.

Sort of. You have to call it the same song but you can add your own flair. For example I did ‘Everlong (Ghost Piano Version)’ but still has the original name in there. Also I wouldn’t make it too different as you want people to not only find it but have the track nestle in with the others and the original to get you more plays organically by others finding it. Hope that makes sense.
If you are doing a cover song and using your original vocals but have a backing track (karaoke version) which you have a commercial license in place for, which allows usage of the backing track etc; for music download/streaming platforms, is this still ok for DistroKid?

So my thought would be no as you are not meant to download anything from CZcams without the owners permission. It’s really difficult I know but my best advice is contact DistroKid here: distrokid.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Contact DistroKid because there could be someone who does indeed own the copyright like their family or estate or it’s been bought by someone or a firm. Micheal Jackson at one time owned over half the Beatles collection! Alternatively, to be safe, put it down as a cover and see what happens. But if you are unsure, I would contact DistroKid directly. 👍🏻
So if this has NEVER been recorded and released then it’s not a cover. You will need to release it with the option of a normal track and then fill in the songwriters / artists option there to say who wrote it. DistroKid is the easiest way as they sort it all out. The other way is through places like Harry Fox or EasySong.com but you have to be careful if it’s digital or physical and what countries you wish to have the rights in. Can get very messy very quickly. Now, because I use DistroKid and have even released covers through them, I’m obviously gonna tell you to go with them! It’s the easiest and simplest way to get a licence and you pretty much don’t have to worry about it. But do your own research and look into what’s best for you, especially if you are distributing Physical copies as well. 👍🏻

Yes. You need to make your ‘own’ version or have 100% authority to produce the track from the people who made it. You might get into real trouble if you don’t as it’s already produced, even as a backing track and probably has its own ISRC code. Better to make your own version but either way you will still need to release as a cover, naming the song and artist to give the proper rights and have the proper licence. 👍🏻

With sampling or remixing other people’s material, you need permission from the artist BEFORE you are allowed to even use it, and then need permission to release it. Get in touch with DistroKid’s support page to ask them about more info. distrokid.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

Hi - had few issues with Dkid - have Musician Plus which I don't need so looking to down grade. You talked about setting release dates, but I didn't think you could do this with the basic subscription (i,e the $19.99) I'm guessing you can do this with your label subscription - am I right? Thx
the things you can do with musician plus tariff are in fact customise the label name, release date and presage dates. with the basic $19.99 you are correct you cannot do this - it’s $35.99 with the label one being $79.99
What if you have a music video of this cover song? Sounds like you did the MV first in this case. But, is CZcams collecting money on that cover - or can you? you would normally de-select CZcams on Distrokid so it doesnt try to take the money twice for the same thing. the second thing is the MV would or could get a copyright strike - dont worry if that happens and then you can share the profits with the original writers/performers, as I am doing with the correct label. Hey Gabrielle 👋 A sync licence is still needed but DistroKid doesn’t get in the way of that. They do push it to social media but if you are looking for TV, Film placement then still get or keep your sync licence. Hope that helps 👍🏻

@@gabriellefernandez24 You can contact the copyright holder and/or publisher to get the sync license, however, I've found that these large record companies and publishers often ignore your email if they think you're a small fish. If they don;t answer you, then you can just upload you cover video and more than likely CZcams content ID will flag it and the publisher / copyright holder will just claim and monetize your video. It's unlikely you'll get a DMCA takedown notice unless you have an outrageous video that they don't agree with. Roll the dice or don't it's up to you. I am not a lawyer and do so at your own risk, but more than likely they wont care. There are tons of cover videos on CZcams where people don't even have the mechanical license.
I just started out with CZcams cover things and I'm so confused about using distrokid services or not because it cost a lot for $12/song/year if you upload every week it would cost at least $600. If I'm just starting out do you think I should use the service or wait till I'm able to monetize the video? I'd really appreciate your advice on this matter.
It’s totally up to you. If you are making money to cover the $12/year for that song then it’s totally viable to do it. I think about it like a product or business. If you are in the music trade, You ARE a business. So with that in mind, will it make you money or is it like spending money on advertising to get you more trade. I believe it’s worth it at the the right time. It’s a $1/month.. but if you so lots then that can quickly ramp up.. so I see both sides. Ultimately you don’t have to release EVERY cover.. maybe make an album of your best ones or the one people say ‘oh, I wish that was on Spotify or Apple Music etc’ and make that available. Alternatively you can seek sponsorships from independents on the CZcams channel to cover the cost. Look at someone like Boyce Avenue - they have made a career out of it and they reap the benefits. Just starting out? I would just put them on YT for now and see what gains traction - if your getting loads of views then you can make it available cause the audience want it.
What if I made a cover over a new beat and re-wrote the verses? Only thing I kept from the original song is the chorus. Does that count as a remix or cover?

As far as I am aware they do have a an approach of getting a covers licence for you they say this: “DistroKid will obtain the required compulsory mechanical license for you. We'll automatically deduct the legally-mandated fee (9.1 cents or 1.75 cents per minute of playing time or fraction thereof, whichever is larger) from your earnings and pay it to the original songwriter. You'll get 100% of the rest. But in my case, the record company declined my request of getting a license. And they also wrote that they recommend not to release the song on any platforms available. I quote: "They will have the right to issue a takedown notice, and potentially take legal action yes, as it will be an unauthorised release of a work which Trent Reznor owns the copyright to." They declined us an mechanical license. Do we even need that license, If our goal is to only release it on Spotify etc. My main concern is if Diatrokid's license is 100% legit. Yeah mechanical licence is just a term now. Mechanical means any device to be played, including services. It’s just a bit out of date term. If I was you I would reach out to DistroKid directly and ask them. 👍🏼

So this is directly from DistroKid’s FAQ section about stopping with them: “If you stop paying the annual fee (and haven't opted into "Leave a Legacy," more info on that in bold below), we may remove your DistroKid songs & albums from streaming services. You will continue to have access to DistroKid.com and (of course) will receive any earnings owed to you. Assuming that you didn't opt into Leave a Legacy... the reason why we remove former-customers' music from streaming services is because it's a lot of work for us to gather revenue reports from streaming services, pay out earnings, do customer service, and so on. Your membership fee covers all that. We'll automatically re-bill you every year so you don't have to think about it. If the charge fails, we'll give you ample notice before removing any of your music from streaming services. We know you don't want any surprises when it comes to your music. Also, in the rare case that we remove your music from streaming services after your yearly subscription ends, you can of course re-join DistroKid any time and upload it again.” Hope that helps.

If I were to upload about 100 piano covers, mostly video game covers, that would set me back almost 1500$ each and every year, because of the monthly 12$ fee for every song. This is very true Phil. Honestly I’m unsure but I would look around and find what’s best for you. I have used CD Baby in the past and they are also a good distributor but it just depends on what you want and I don’t know what their prices are from licensing for covers.

How does someone go about performing Live instrumental on social media platforms playing cover songs. Their not distributing or anything but just playing music?
That’s different than having it on Spotify, Apple Music etc through a distributor as it needs a UPC and other ID’s to ‘sell’ or distribute the track. Regarding playing live, it’s a bit of a grey area. I play covers on here and Facebook and you might not be able to earn money from it.. but playing live shouldn’t stop you.
When you register you have to fill in the appropriate tax forms for whatever country you are in and the appropriate form for for the IRS to prove what country you are in for the correct tax. This is normal and not an issue.
Could be. this is DistroKid’s answer to it but you have to weight it up. This is just the logistics for getting your cover song or songs out there. If you are marketing it and you get thousands or even millions of streams, then its totally worth doing. Look at bands like Boyce Avenue who made their name from releasing covers. Its a price yes, but its also a worthwhile cost if it raises your profile as an artist. you have to weigh it up.
Better to get it right first off.. I know it’s boring but it’s the world we live in as musicians / performers / creators. Plus you can make money from it! 👍🏻

So if this has NEVER been recorded and released then it’s not a cover. You will need to release it with the option of a normal track and then fill in the songwriters / artists option there to say who wrote it.

Great video! I want to release my first Ep. I would like to put one cover song on it and release it to Spotify,youtube and whatever else with the goal of getting fans,critique, and even monetization. DistroKid seems like the easiest way. I heard about other methods like using Harry Fox etc. It just seems like so many steps. I just want to make sure this is the best method for us. DistroKid is the easiest way as they sort it all out.
The other way is through places like Harry Fox or EasySong.com but you have to be careful if it’s digital or physical and what countries you wish to have the rights in.
Can get very messy very quickly.
Now, because I use DistroKid and have even released covers through them, I’m obviously gonna tell you to go with them! It’s the easiest and simplest way to get a licence and you pretty much don’t have to worry about it.
But do your own research and look into what’s best for you, especially if you are distributing Physical copies as well. 👍🏻

Yes. You need to make your ‘own’ version or have 100% authority to produce the track from the people who made it. You might get into real trouble if you don’t as it’s already produced, even as a backing track and probably has its own ISRC code.
Better to make your own version but either way you will still need to release as a cover, naming the song and artist to give the proper rights and have the proper licence. 👍🏻

What about sampling or remixing existing recordings that are in the public domain?
With sampling or remixing other people’s material, you need permission from the artist BEFORE you are allowed to even use it, and then need permission to release it.

the things you can do with musician plus tariff are in fact customise the label name, release date and presage dates. with the basic $19.99 you are correct you cannot do this - it’s $35.99 with the label one being $79.99
What if you have a music video of this cover song? Sounds like you did the MV first in this case. But, is CZcams collecting money on that cover - or can you? you would normally de-select CZcams on Distrokid so it doesnt try to take the money twice for the same thing. the second thing is the MV would or could get a copyright strike - dont worry if that happens and then you can share the profits with the original writers/performers, as I am doing with the correct label. A sync licence is still needed but DistroKid doesn’t get in the way of that. They do push it to social media but if you are looking for TV, Film placement then still get or keep your sync licence.

@@gabriellefernandez24 You can contact the copyright holder and/or publisher to get the sync license, however, I've found that these large record companies and publishers often ignore your email if they think you're a small fish. If they don;t answer you, then you can just upload you cover video and more than likely CZcams content ID will flag it and the publisher / copyright holder will just claim and monetize your video. It's unlikely you'll get a DMCA takedown notice unless you have an outrageous video that they don't agree with. Roll the dice or don't it's up to you. I am not a lawyer and do so at your own risk, but more than likely they wont care. There are tons of cover videos on CZcams where people don't even have the mechanical license.
I just started out with CZcams cover things and I'm so confused about using distrokid services or not because it cost a lot for $12/song/year if you upload every week it would cost at least $600. If I'm just starting out do you think I should use the service or wait till I'm able to monetize the video? I'd really appreciate your advice on this matter.
It’s totally up to you.
If you are making money to cover the $12/year for that song then it’s totally viable to do it.
I think about it like a product or business. If you are in the music trade, You ARE a business. So with that in mind, will it make you money or is it like spending money on advertising to get you more trade. I believe it’s worth it at the the right time.
It’s a $1/month.. but if you so lots then that can quickly ramp up.. so I see both sides.
Ultimately you don’t have to release EVERY cover.. maybe make an album of your best ones or the one people say ‘oh, I wish that was on Spotify or Apple Music etc’ and make that available.
Alternatively you can seek sponsorships from independents on the CZcams channel to cover the cost.
Look at someone like Boyce Avenue - they have made a career out of it and they reap the benefits.
Just starting out? I would just put them on YT for now and see what gains traction - if your getting loads of views then you can make it available cause the audience want it.

That’s a good question. I’m sure it would be a remix but you would still need permission.
That would not be a cover song. You would have to get direct permission from the copyright holder.

As far as I am aware they do have a an approach of getting a covers licence for you they say this:
“DistroKid will obtain the required compulsory mechanical license for you. We'll automatically deduct the legally-mandated fee (9.1 cents or 1.75 cents per minute of playing time or fraction
thereof, whichever is larger) from your earnings and pay it to the original songwriter. You'll get 100% of the rest. You don't have to do anything else.”

I have read that paragraph maybe 25 times now haha. And it looks great!!
But in my case, the record company declined my request of getting a license. And they also wrote that they recommend not to release the song on any platforms available.
I quote: "They will have the right to issue a takedown notice, and potentially take legal action yes, as it will be an unauthorised release of a work which Trent Reznor owns the copyright to."
They declined us an mechanical license.

Yeah mechanical licence is just a term now. Mechanical means any device to be played, including services.

Great info. Question, what happens should you cancel your Distrokid, I suppose you will no longer be charged the 12 dollars annually, as your cover is no longer available to the public listening audience?
So this is directly from DistroKid’s FAQ section about stopping with them:
“If you stop paying the annual fee (and haven't opted into "Leave a Legacy," more info on that in bold below), we may remove your DistroKid songs & albums from streaming services. You will continue to have access to DistroKid.com and (of course) will receive any earnings owed to you.
Assuming that you didn't opt into Leave a Legacy... the reason why we remove former-customers' music from streaming services is because it's a lot of work for us to gather revenue reports from streaming services, pay out earnings, do customer service, and so on. Your membership fee covers all that.
We'll automatically re-bill you every year so you don't have to think about it. If the charge fails, we'll give you ample notice before removing any of your music from streaming services. We know you don't want any surprises when it comes to your music.
Also, in the rare case that we remove your music from streaming services after your yearly subscription ends, you can of course re-join DistroKid any time and upload it again.”

If I were to upload about 100 piano covers, mostly video game covers, that would set me back almost 1500$ each and every year, because of the monthly 12$ fee for every song. Do you know if any other distributor handles the uploading of !many covers! in a somewhat cheaper way?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it seems that Distrokid's way of handling cover songs is easy and great for bands who put out maybe 5 cover songs a year, but not for lots and lots of cover songs, ie. piano collections.
I'll continue my research to find something that's easier on the pocket regarding the upload of a high amount of cover songs.

How does someone go about performing Live instrumental on social media platforms playing cover songs. Their not distributing or anything but just playing music?
That’s different than having it on Spotify, Apple Music etc through a distributor as it needs a UPC and other ID’s to ‘sell’ or distribute the track.
Regarding playing live, it’s a bit of a grey area. I play covers on here and Facebook and you might not be able to earn money from it.. but playing live shouldn’t stop you.

When you register you have to fill in the appropriate tax forms for whatever country you are in and the appropriate form for for the IRS to prove what country you are in for the correct tax.
