Insulin or Calories: What's Behind Weight Loss?

  • If you want to lose weight, it seems logical to eat less food. But, is it that simple or do hormones control fat loss?
Your body wants balance, so when you eat too few calories for too long, your body adapts by slowing your metabolism. Fortunately, we no longer have to be slaves to the Calorie-In-Calorie-Out philosophy of weight loss.
We now know that hormones, like insulin, determine how our bodies utilize the nutrients we eat. So, does this mean we can eat as much as we want and still lose weight? Not exactly…I explain in the video.

What a great explanation! I agree completely. I am big on a low carb diet, but I have a problem with the folks who suggest that low carb or keto diets automatically guarantee weight loss, regardless of how much you eat. People who go keto but are constantly stuffing themselves with nuts and other lower carb, high fat foods are probably not going to lose weight. Self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit and it is important, regardless of which diet you are on. This is the one subject that most of our low-carb and keto doctors and experts never address.

Most people experience less hunger which results in a reduction of caloric intake on a low carb diet. However this does not appear to be true for everyone.
I've noticed that if I increase my protein intake and reduce my fat intake, I'll get a lot more hungry. So it could be because they're eating too much protein and not enough fat. We would have to ask one of these people to experiment with their protein to fat ratio to see what they experience.
If they still experience hunger, then they'll definitely have to limit their intake regardless of hunger.

Hormones are very powerful. For me, the key was less sugar and reduce refined carbs. But also, fewer big meals and fewer meals altogether. Extending fasting periods and reducing sugar really works. So i try not to spike insulin often. This plan works for me bc i am the classic momentum eater! It is much harder for me to stop eating than it is not to start. I postpone the start. When i do eat, i eat to satisfaction. I eat a lot actually. So i basically have one large meal per day and smaller meals outside of that and some days i just have 2 meals per day. I replace milk w Protein nutmilk. That only has 2g sugar! Insulin messes up leptin and leptin controls appetite. I think leptin is another hormone. Also, stress impacts things. Keep stress down and get good sleep. Sleep is where fat is burned!

You are awesome! I haven’t been able to lose for years and used to be a skinny tennis player. Now I am approaching my high school size.
All I do is eat foods with “0” or “1” carb per serving. I eat as much as I want and that’s it.
I eat lots of butter, bacon ,fish, eggs etc.
I am in Ketosis because I can smell it on my breath. The last of the weight should be gone in a couple of months and I will never go back to poison carbs.
For anyone looking for a simple method to think about this process, try this.
Every time you see a carb number
think of it as an insulin number instead. Real simple. Keep it at “0” as best you can and I enjoy eating without the weight gain.
I used to have an impulsive addiction to food but it is don’t over power me like it used too.
I am a 56 year old male and was developing an eating disorder. Now a can go most of the day and not think about food.
Dr. Becky is awesome and I credit her with my weight lose. Thanks Doc.

I must have balance in everything: strict Keto, intermittent fasting and counting my whopping 1137 calories per day, and getting at least 10,000 steps a day is what it takes for me!! @@skylermccloud6230 not sure why the remark if you follow Dr. Becky? She didn't post the one with the peppers. She is trained in nutrition and has enough sense to realize that carbs and sugar are the enemy. Perhaps thus far in your life you can eat what you want with no affect and I pray for you that continues. As a person who wants good health I know carbs and sugar can wreck your health. Perhaps you are unaware of Ansel Keys and the influence he had on the population buying into fat being bad for the heart? When he was so persuasive it was the beginning of the uptrend in diabetes which sadly continues. The American SAD diet. Some of us know to follow people that make good sense and I believe you do too or you wouldn't watch Dr. Becky. Try Dr. Boz, Dr. Berry, Dr Cywes and the Diet Doctor who are all MDs who say the same thing. It is foolish to get caught up with titles. NOTHING in life can be in excess.

I am so glad you mentioned the starvation mode that the body goes into when you stop eating or slow down your caloric intake. I did Michael Thurmond 6-week body makeover years ago and the one thing that I learned was that I stop eating my metabolism slows down and I don't lose any weight or I gain weight which is basically what happened to me I was successful on that diet lost 42 pounds in 7 weeks but it was very very restrictive. And I have a hard time going back to it which is why I'm doing Keto. But I am not having a lot of success on keto as I would like. I'm wondering if I can somehow marry the two plans so I can be happy in my eating and still lose significant weight

  • @Ironclad6661
    @Ironclad6661 Před 5 lety

I have found that where keto gets tricky is in protein intake. For example. You want a ribeye steak with asparagus. You used to eat 16 oz steak with potatoes and asparagus. So you cut out the potatoes you have a good meal, and yes you do however I would sneak in a couple spoons of sauce (carb) and I was still hungry even after eating a 16 oz ribeye. I cut out the 5g of sauce and I find myself full on 8-10 oz ribeye and asparagus. I might even have a salad with full fat dressing or put some butter on top of the ribeye. I am fully satisfied until almost noon the next day (16 hours) Atkins says EAT all the fats and proteins you want just cut CARBS. That might work for someone fairly thin to begin with that has good insulin sensitivity or perhaps a bodybuilder but if you're obese and over age 50+ like me and have insulin resistance you'll find excess protein will ruin your diet and having you craving. So take it from me. Use the carbs for kale, spinach, green salads, green beans, brocolli, asparagus, if you want have some cauliflower mashed potatoes with lots of butter. You'll be in heaven and not crave so much. You'll find 10 oz seems like 22 oz steak and fill you up. You'll find your fork moving very slowly LOL instead of ravenously gobbling up 3-4 bites at a time with a slice of texas toast haha. If you follow Dr Becky's advice you'll be able to easily lose 50, 70 and 100+ pounds never feel hunger and normalize your insulin. At which point you can probably add a few things to your diet because you'll have corrected your situation or you might just decide to make it a lifetime way of eating.

Hi Becky ... I'm new to your channel, and thinking of calling you tomorrow for coaching. I have a question after listening to this video, and several of your others. Unless I misunderstood I think you're saying to calculate macros based on "Lean mass" rather than calculating it on TDEE? Did I understand that correctly? If that is the case then (I think) my total caloric intake would be less than 1200 calories per day, and I've read in many reputable places that women should not go under 1200. Could you address that question? Respectfully submitted and thanks for all the wonderful information.

explained a lot. is there a way to determine your lean body mass short of being clinically tested? I'm doing keto and have lost weight, but always looking for more info. I've never been a sweets eater, but have tried losing weight via reducing calories. that never worked well. the weight I gained was more from stress plus menopause than anything.
Finally losing weight on keto, but don 't know how to adjust my caloric intake for my lean body mass since I don't know what that is. I keep track of intake using my fitness pal app and often get the message (when I close out the day) of "you're not eating enough" so it won't calculate approx weight at the end of 5 weeks......... I'm not sure how to get around that. I did find your comments on dairy being a possible interference. I drink coffee during the day with heavy cream. 2-3 cups per day, (it's kind of my treat). I don''t mind it black, but creamed is a wonderful thing.
female - 5'10" /65 / hoping to reach goal weight of 150-155. 11 lbs down and counting.

Hi ssarge2, you can determine your lean mass by first determining your body fat%. We have videos in our coaching program that explain how to calculate your lean mass and determine your caloric needs based on that amount.

Keto or no keto but when I cut out sugar, whites and refined food, take lots of fiber, healthy fats, walk 30 mins everyday, I lost 12 lbs in 4 months. BP dropped from 200 to 110. However, I don't want to loose more weight (from 125 down to 103 !). Now I am trying to have more protein in my diet and a piece of sprouted wheat bread now and then. Will see what happens.

I agree with most of what she said except that when you’re going on a low carb keto genic diet fat calories are necessary. If you try to regulate calories coming from fat you’re not going to ketosis or it may take you months to get there. If you want to lose weight on a ketogenic diet think about calories and only two areas carbs and protein. Once you reach ketosis and you’ve been there for a few months you can lower your calorie input overall to lose weight faster. If you do not put enough fat in at the beginning your body will not learn to use it as fuel and just slow your metabolism down to adjust for less calories input. The more fat you put in the lower your insulin and the faster your body learns the new fuel. Your body will prefer fat which it turns into key tones for fuel but will also use carbs if needed. That’s called metabolic flexibility or keto adapted.

My daughter is built like me larger upper body. Apple shape. I am trying to convince her that low carb is the best thing for her. Due to almost every person grandparents (all) mother and father type 2 diabetes. She says her boyfriend thinks high carbs are the best. They are both large and will not listen to mother. Lol
What ways can I let her know that low carb not necessarily keto is the best way to eat?

Ur 100% right. Lean Body weight is the only weight to use for any nutritional calculations. Ur fat oesn't need feeding! I don't get why no-one else stresses this. Baseing Calories and macros on total BW is just ridiculous!

Thanks for this! My question after watching this is, how come we gain weight the ? Wouldn’t our body speed up metabolism or burn extra calories to obtain/maintain homeostasis? I’m 50 and finding that my body easily gains weight but it has been sooo hard for me to lose it!

Hi Ann, metabolism will speed up with extra calories in a healthy body, but our modern food choices make this metabolic advantage easy to overcome.

So.....in a brief summary, calories in vs. calories out. There are no reliable weight loss studies (equating protein and calories) that show reduction of one macronutrient is superior to the other.

I have been doing low carb for 6 weeks approximately 1400 calories a day. I've lost about 4 lbs..I'm very frustrated ..I have had better success on 1000- 1200 calories a day just eating healthy..I'm really frustrated with the lack of results I am getting. I would love to know why this is such a struggle for me.

I don't eat processed foods, red meat/pork, and keep my carb/sugar count down. I have access to lots of healthy veggies, especially during the garden season. But, I seem to ruin it at night by having a couple glasses of wine. I live in Northern CA where we have amazing wineries/wine, and I don't want to give it up. I want to lose 10-15 lbs. Keto did not work for me, I am assuming because of the wine intake. I have started intermittent fasting at least twice a week. Any other suggestions?
