From a white guys point of view Whitney was mostly seen as a pop charts singer during the 80s. Of course everybody noticed what an outstanding singer she was but she entered the charts with some good pop songs. First songs I heard were „You give good love“ and „How will I know‘ And hell that girl looked fantastic. So she was my girlfriend for many years. Unfortunately Whitney didn’t know. 😜 Even that the 80s had a lot of great singers Whitney was special and made you believe that she sang especially for you. I saw her live in Frankfurt on autumn 1988. (earlier that year I saw Michael Jackson live in Cologne doing his Bad Tour). We all were stunned that Whitney topped her studio records with her live performances. She did things live others couldn’t do in studio. We all loved her that evening and she knew it. R.I.P queen. BTW You‘re right that she was a bit shaky in the lows. Nothing special and it happened rarely to her. Nevertheless she‘s still my favorite female singer ever.
She was considered pop/R&B but more pop after her second album. At that point people said she was too "white". That's why she was booed at the Soul Train awards.
I am not sure what happened but I remember seeing that production messed something up at the start and that is why Whitney was a little off. (I could be remembering wrong though LOL) But this is also a backing track I think she does better when she works with a band. She has some control over the band. Her and Ricky Minor were magic together!
