Agree; these are very wealthy people hooked on gambling buying these modern cards for 5 figures. They hope the player has a good september so they can flip the card for a 25% profit
I’ve been collecting for the past 43 years, what’s going on now isn’t collecting, it’s a scam to take people's money. I’m done with all this stuff and looking to find a hobby that empowers me like exercising more instead of cracking packs on my ass

I'm older and have only ever collected vintage. Back in 1969 when I bought my first packs of cards it was 5 cards for 5 cents. I'm blown away by what people pay now. And I agree with exoticworldreview that it is a scam today. It really is just gambling to buy modern cards and hope the player has a good month so as to flip for 20% more. The vintage cards are retired players whose values are all set and they move up or down 5 or 10% each year. And for us older folks bring back great memories

You mean from 3-4 years ago that almost all had their moment to sell for profit? You do realize almost every card in all sports end up going way down. 99.8% all go down and all of them have a high point.

In 10 years, 99% of cards will be pennies on the dollar. There is NO reason to spend more than $200 on any prospect card, when you can buy HOF cards for a fraction (and much lower pops)

I laugh, because it’s obvious that the drama in the hobby is primarily pouring out from people who continually dump money into ultra-modern and get their ***es handed to them. Lining up to gamble on breaks, while constantly getting dipped on would make me cranky too.
I think people that pay $10K+ for a freakin card are completely nuts. I don't care how much money you have.

Ohtani is the only ultra modern baseball player to buy IMO. My rule is that I don't speculate more than 1-2 players per sport per generation. There's only 1-2 guys per sport that really appreciate every generation. I see Ohtani as that player in baseball so I wouldn't bother buying anyone else

Guilty or not, he will never recover. Never owned a Wander card. Never bought anyone based on hype. It's a lot easier if you actually like the players you're "investing" in. Paying for cards based on potential is nuts.
This is why I only collect Jordan. His legacy is cemented as a top 5 athlete of all time.
Right now i think Will Grier is about a 10x better investment than 52 Mickey Mantles.........

The idiocy in the Geoff Wilson system is that he's not giving investment advice. Hes giving sport commentary. His "investment" strategy seems to be "buy players who might become starters or good players". That's fine i suppose, but then he tells you which players to buy, like he knows anything about sports. He knows less than most average fans. Why anyone would think he knows anything about which players might be good, ill never know
He should just stick to buying Florida Gators cards. The rest he is just taking potshots, as he has the money to do so.

This is the strategy of any flipper/so called investor. There's only so many starters and if there is the slight chance someone will become one, they will skyrocket. As soon as they get in there and suck, it will drop. If you are quick to move these cards, you'll be able to find a sucker

I don't buy singles so no worries on my end. I buy all topps products, no hobby box over $160 . I have done pretty good this way. Recently hit a green shimmer auto of Spencer Jones bowman 1st chrome out of $30 blaster. I hit a Trey Lance optic downtown rc out a $20 hanger. All my big hits come from low dollar buys. I have no big hits from hobby this year. I have done much better sticking with $20 hangers and $30 blasters. Collect what you like and u can't go wrong. Of course I would like a return on investment but I do it for the fun of hobby.

I invested in Wander because his stock was cheap last year after his surgery, was hoping he'd bounce back this year... wasn't expecting this...
damn, he got a hot start and I saw his PSA rookie cards were like less than $14 a card. I bought like 30 PSA 9 wander franco cards. I was lucky that i bought like only $300 investment. i still got 100+ rookie auto of CJ Beathard, 50+ rookie auto of joe williams (49ers 2018 fourth round rb), didn't even have 1 NFL carry?!?!?! 80+ rookie of auto Jacob Harris, the 6'5" with freakish measurable skills that ranked among NFL draftee elites. I have so many busts!!!

Out of those 4 cards im taking the Desmond Ridder for that price all day. I think Ridder is gonna be a very good player this year and ongoing with a young good falcons team.

While it's not a rare card, it's still his true rookie card. Not like Juan Soto, Ronald Acuana, Ohtani, and Aaron Judge who have like, 50 plus different rookies, so I disagree the Ryan, rookie card will go down much, but I guess time will tell.

I can't even wrap my mind around dropping 10-12k per card on these QB's, and I mainly collect football. I'd be adding on-card Michael Jordan Exquisite autos, etc. instead of burning money on these guys, especially now.

I do agree any of these younger Hot Stars in these super high expensive PSA10, BGS 9.5 whatever Chrome Refractor auto cards are a big risk & possibly a big frisk. Wait until they at least have played a few years and have a good track record on and off the field. I like sports to. I don't have to invest in all that. Buy a $10 poster of your favorite player.

Every time I hear the word ‘investment’ associated with sports card collecting I cringe. The two words don’t go together. Good on you if you make a few bucks or even enough bucks to live a good life, but it’s the rare few who truly make a living out of a passion for collecting sports cards. Been collecting for almost 50-years now and seen the markets moving every which way.
