The Real Thing (1980) James Burke

  • James Burke`s forgotten series:
This TV series was the program that got me interested in philosophy and science at a very early age. I own James Burke a debt indeed for this.
This collection of programs still has great resonance today regarding the questions that are again very popular today. What is reality? What do any of us really have in common with others in order to be sure that `the real thing` is indeed real?
The recording is not great but it is watchable, although the sound may need to be turned up in order to comfortably hear. Enjoy!

James Burke n Carl Sagan gave me what science in public schools never did - a love of finding stuff out - evn Frank Zappa dedicated the Civilization album to James - ahead of his time - a taste of the future that could be with knowledge - a sense of wonder - watched everything he did - now again - thanks

When I saw "The Day the Universe Changed", I really, changed. I've become very much interested in those moments in history where the world ceased to be the same after them. Mr Burke, to me is "The Great Master" who showed me these moments and I, ever sense that program, have never been the same.
This program, however, is, unfortunately, completely new to me. Therefore, I thank you very much for this upload.

I believe I too, owe James Burke a debt: I've recently been prompted to look for his 1978 TV series 'Connections', which I originally watched as a 17 year old. While the memory of it was a little distant, the impact it had on me helped both form and inform me; it lead me to a better appreciation of science and technology, it's impact on societal development and the often bizarre and sometimes freakishly accidental way those developments came about and the threads of each that lead to further undestanding. The programmes helped build in me a better understanding of the need for critical thinking and an appreciation of how human ideas transcend national barriers and cultural silos. When I discovered there was quite a lot of resources on the Internet pertaining to his work, I even looked on Facebook, to see if he had a page (hoping that the man was still alive). When I discovered he was, and on Facebook, I even took the time to message him and explain what I have said to you and to thank him persoanlly for the thought-provoking work he has undertaken, for it's lasting impression on me.

Also this actual tape viewing you can 'see' a slight tape crinkling damage at the top of the tape. Marvelous I hope this vid stays on YT

I lived in the UK January 1972 to July 1974 ( 2 1/2 years) and regularly watched James Burke on a show "Connections" in which he would start at a historical event and then progress, and connect to modern day inventions. Connecting cloth dyes to chemical discoveries in the 20th century. connecting the stirrup at the Battle of Agincourt" (?) to later inventions of further advancements in weapons. Everything I read now about Connections- James Burke has the shows of period of 1980, and later, and nothing earlier than 1980. I know I watched them in 1972-1973, so why are none of those episodes ever mentioned. My favorite intro was with James Burke standing at a stone wall where a battle had occurred 400 plus years earlier. His premise to start the show was that a recording could play the etchings created by sound waves on the rocks and made a permanent record of the sounds/words that had occurred by that stone. I would love to see those episodes nearly 50 years later.

At 1:27:00, it's very interesting because I have aphantasia. When this was first broadcast, I don't even think it was known. It means not having the ability to create visual imagery in the mind at will. I only discovered I had it 5 years ago. Up until then, I thought everyone was like me. Then I learned that most people can create images in their heads! That still blows my mind. OTOH, around the same time, I realized I can see in perfect 3D with one eye which means I can get the full 3D effect of any video or photograph.
So, this exercise at the end of Episode 3 means nothing to me! I cannot conjure up an image of James Burke from the past and put him in front of the clock. I just see the clock.

Ah, old VHS/BETA eh? Auto/Manual tracking, self cleaning or whip the cover off and get in there with a 'Q'-tip... Such fond memories of cleaning the inside of those things just to impress my parents, haha!... A great series of programs that I'd not seen previously, and whilst many poignant questions were highlighted in a variety of methods that differ from today's way of approaching subjects, and whilst many have been given different and more 'modern' titles, the same questions remain unanswered, such as the 'big crunch', how does the brain 'remember', time travel etc. Many experts try to convince us to follow their reasoning or accept why they are looking for something to answer questions of the universe, billions spent on objects that take us further away and only raise more questions than they provide answers, even with all the scientific developments that have been made in three and a bit decades since this was filmed we are progressing at a snails pace. The human race has become stagnant in many aspects, politically restricted, ethically beaten down, financially broke. No longer do we have the great freedom of the pioneers who risked their everything to answer and make the true discoveries, yet still there is so much to discover...

Thank you very much for this upload. I've been after this program ever since my VHS 9long time ago) copy got destroyed in storage. I'm much obliged to you.
P.S. I'll be fixing the audio problem via WinFF, Avidemux and Audacity running on Ubuntu Linux 16.10

You could download it (I use 4k Video Downloader (free version available)) and play it in VLC. This allows you to add extra volume.

Anything by James Burke is outstanding. Unfortunately the audio is so low as to make it impossible for me to hear this without absolute silence in the house. Alas, silence is never present here.

When audio level is so low it's barely above the noise floor then whatever one does to increase level also increases background noise.
YT may one day roll out auto soundtrack level normalisation but they won't want to be blamed for the way it also butchers the sound. I expect YT will make it a feature that's turn-off-able each video. @@robertmatch6550

This series "impressed the hell out of me" for several reasons including the girl echoing another speaker, "in real time", after which I noticed that two girls and even three can all talk at once and follow what the others said, ..without any obvious drawing of breath to process content. When you notice this, you look for abilities everyone has in different degrees in other areas of expression. (Graphic art, sciences etc)
It's instructive about what is actually required to make effective AI, up to human standard, if ever. Maybe our biology can be "metalized"?
The theory of parallel universes could apply to parallel processing in this universe, (of echoes), but the QM connection processed by occurrence of quantized probability, as parallel timed effects in one field of Q-information, implies that all such components are driven by the same principles as "one electron", and so deliberate inanimate disassociaton of connectivity in mechanoids is never going to work.
