  • In this three-part video (1:10 Dissecting, 5:34 Decoding, 8:28 Reassembling) I take apart a Burg Wächter 4 wheel combination lock (Combi-lock) with false gates (model "88 40 FUN"). I explain how the lock works internally and derive a method to defeat the false gates. Then I quickly decode another lock of the same model with this method. Finally, I reassemble the first lock and explain how changing the code works on these locks. This will give you a great inside-view on how these locks work and how to decode them in general.

    Thank you very much for this accurate explanation and step-by-step demonstration. I have now succeeded in picking this padlock model four times in a row. Here are some tips from my experience:
    • Start with the two lower wheels. The two upper wheels are usually not binding until at least the lowest wheel’s digit is correct.
    • Check after EVERY 2-digit-turn if the hardest-moving wheel has changed.
    • While turning a wheel, be careful not to turn an adjacent wheel.
    • For determining which wheel is hardest to turn, you have to pull HARD on the shackle.
    • The first (top) wheel is usually the last wheel to find the True Gate for.
    • You can hear a “click” when you turn a wheel either into the True Gate or a False Gate next to it.

    You've just saved my friend 30€! He bought that lock to lock up a machine we'll be getting very soon for our workshop and his 1 year old son messed with the lock in an unsupervised moment. Asked me if I wanted to give it a shot and I enjoy learning new skills like this.

    Thank you for showing this! :D I can now start to see why different types of feedback are produced and how it makes it easier to decode a combination lock. Thank you sir!

    Had to decode that exact lock model today in a live situation outside. Your video provided me with all the insight necessary to decode it in about a minute even though the lock was a little stiff after being out there during the seasons. It would have taken MUCH longer if I hadn't seen how the false gates on that lock exactly work and interact with the locking detents. Thanks for that! :D

    Nice video. Interesting to get a look inside, without taking one apart myself. Thought the new code would be 3142, but that is just me rounding up, because of the 5 behind the 1. The evil curse of math.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for watching - glad you found it interesting. I was curious myself to exactly understand the different types of feedback and so I had to take one apart for analysis. Quite interesting to see and understand the little details like the step on the tooth. As far as pi goes, I don't wanna have a proper rounded number on my locks but just have as many digits of it as possible, depending on the number of wheels. Imaging having a 4 and 5 wheel lock. With rounding the 4 wheel lock had 3142 and the 5 wheel lock 31416. I find it more aesthetic when the 5-wheel lock just extends the number with the next digit: 31415.

    im too clumsy for your method, i also tried using a metal pin to alight the kogs, but there is no room.
    then i sat down with my tablelight and observed the first kog until i saw the first metal pin, which was between 9 and 0, which translated to a 7 at the top number, so i only had to try 1000 derivated combinations in theory (7000-7999) and it glady unlocked at 7007 :D

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 3 lety

      I clamped the lock into a vice protected by a rag. Then I used a flat head screwdriver to pry on the cap and a pair or pliers to grab the cup, rotate and lift it up.

    I tried your method and it took me nearly a full day trying and then I gave it up and just before I wanted to go to bed I thought maybe a safety pin thats small enough would fit in those holes at the top and i could find the teeth by pushing and it worked just took me 1 minute and i had all numbers but still good video tho

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 6 lety +1

      Sorry to read that it didn't work for you - decoding is fun for me and I enjoy doing it. Hope that you also liked it at least a bit. The safety pin is a cool idea - maybe I try it myself and show it on video or would you like to demonstrate it?

  • @noakeswalker
    @noakeswalker Před 7 lety

    Very clear explanation ! I guess that the Abus 40mm combo lock you carry about at all times for fun is very similar internally ?......(don't dismantle to find out though :o) The press fit cap is a bit less secure than I would have hoped for !! Great to see the innards anyway...

    • @RuneInternational
      @RuneInternational Před 7 lety

      noakeswalker taking the cap off will only allow the shackle to come out, when the right code is entered, so it is not really a big Security flaw

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 7 lety

      Thank you. I think it's _about_ the same compared to the ABUS - but I find the ABUS easier as the feedback is more clear. Why not taking one apart? - now I'm curious. I might just buy another one for the dissection - in the name of science ;-)
      If the cap is taken off while the lock is locked-up, you can see inside and can adjust the first wheel. This makes it effectively a 3 wheel lock.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 7 lety

      @Rune International: You're right but you can look inside and easily adjust the first wheel.

    • @RuneInternational
      @RuneInternational Před 7 lety

      Potti314. And then you can put a long needle in, and rotate till all the teeth hit the needle. That is bad !

    • @noakeswalker
      @noakeswalker Před 7 lety

      Taking Abus apart - I just didn't want you to do this on account of me ! But in the name of science sounds like a good excuse to pull that cap off an Abus 40 :o)

  • @cosminvacaroiu

    Why didn't they do false gates for each number ?

    • @Potti314
