(picking 115) ABUS 165/40 4-wheel combination lock decoded [false gates] - reliable, simple & quick

  • Demonstrating a quick, reliable and easy method to defeat the false gates on an ABUS 165/40 4-wheel combination padlock. It is great fun to play with that lock and decode it. This lock has gates (true or false) on every second position which prevents it from being decoded by the usual pull-picking method.
    The method used here: Pull on the shackle and turn each wheel until it stops or slightly clicks. If all are in a gates (true or false), you'll feel a give on the shackle. To identify a false gate, pull on the shackle and test every wheel by moving it a bit around its position. The one that gives the most resistance is a binder and is in a false gate. Now release tension and move that wheel by two positions. Repeat the process by testing again all wheels first for the next binder as can vary every time. Finally the lock will open :-)

      +Ultimate Unnamed Thank you. I was fiddling around to find a property that differs between a true and false gate. No chance in getting a difference of shackle movement, click-sound of the wheel or turning angle. But finally it was actually straight forward as one false gates must always bind. Works great.

    Many thanks for your video. I had a 4-digit lock that I found, and just for fun tried to open it, but after two days - and even trying sequential numbers (obviously not doing it very carefully) - I gave up, and nearly threw it away. I came across your video and went to fetch the lock. As I walked back to the computer I moved one number - and it opened right then in my hand. It obviously knew it would be beaten, and died of fright right away!! Now I am able to reset the number to one I can remember (which I didn't know was even possible), and can have fun with other locks when I find them. I really didn't like being beaten by that little lock. Cheers, and thank you again!

    No experience, played along and copied your technique for about 2 "extra" minutes of rewinds of your tape, while i copied your moves, and I wrote down a few numbers that seemed to match your examples in video, thinking i was getting nowhere.. But I kept going, and 2 minutes into my attempts I had the first three numbers correct, and it popped open as i spun through the last number. Nice! Had watched your other video Picking 640, which matched my Amazon locks i just bought, and followed along for about 5 minutes of replay and attempts, but didn't get it to work.
    And then for fun watched this tutorial and voila !
    The release outward of the shackle at each position was what i focused on to get the first three numbers... Thank You ! Almost wasted $3.00 expenditure per lock .... These locks are fine to keep honest people out, knowing they are easily snipped, and fairly easily picked, so its one step up from using a carabiner ....

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 8 lety +1

      Just go wheel by wheel and always take the one that binds most (in doubt just guess) and after turning one wheel always check all wheels before making up a decision for the next. Play with the tension on the shackle to see for which wheel it has the most impact. After all it's the fun of playing with a mechanical puzzle :-)

      Not "breaking" but "decoding". Breaking is destructive, picking and decoding is the art of opening locks without force and without a key / knowing the combination - a hobby for which we buy our locks. Never pick /decode a lock for which you don't have the permission to.

      The ABUS 165/40 might be a bit big or heavy for a bag.

      This has been asked earlier. So I just copy my previous answer here:
      "Please try this: Turn the shackle as if you would close it; it's
      important that the free shackle side is right above the hole. Now gently
      push down the shackle and test each wheel. Turn the wheel that binds
      (gives most resistance) until it "clicks" or you feel a little give on
      the shackle. Repeat it for the other wheels. Maybe clamp the lock in a vice
      to ease the handling. Good luck."

      Probably you have all wheel in gates. Tries to vary the tension and find out which one is in a false gate. Worst case, try all 625 (=5*5*5*5) combinations.

    Hi Potti, I have got a wordlock (Wordlock PL-096-Ax Sports Lock) which I use several times each day in an escape room. For the second(!) time (last week & today) the lock did not open despite correct code. Coments on amazon show that also others experienced the problem. After a lot of trying my lock opend: one wheel was shifted to the neighbour letter. Is it possible, that a code resets accidently despite the lock is locked?

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 7 lety

      Yes, I experienced that also once on a bicycle lock. You need to know that the inner and outer wheel are connected by spring pressure. When changing the combination you disengage both. So if you push the shackle while playing with the wheels or in any other weird situation this might (but of course should not) happen. Maybe it's a lock that has seen rough times and the spring or the elements that connect inner and outer wheel are worn.

      +24700France I know that you managed to open it meanwhile. But for the sake of completeness: Also if the lock is open but locked the method from the video can be applied. It sometimes happens that I mess up shuffling the combination (with eyes closed) and then it's locked in the open state and I have to decode it.

    • @hamburgelbstrand5748
      @hamburgelbstrand5748 Před 8 lety

      +24700France It's much more easier to find out the combination when it's open, because there are no false gates from this side. Just put tension to the shackle and start to rotate, much feedback.

    Having trouble with this. I have a lock to which I knew the code - 2200, however after locking recently the code no longer works (a friend suggested that these locks can end up with the code changed if the shackle is pushed down, even in the 'locked' position before the dials are scrambled so I'm assuming this is what I did). The locker it was attached to didn't have the most solid construction so we were able to remove the locking mechanism to get my things, but it still leaves me with an unusable lock. I'm following your instructions, starting at 3:11 but while the first two wheels lock in place at 00 the other two rotate freely, regardless of which number I put them on when I apply pressure to the shackle, in other words I can't seem to get all the dials into true or false gates before applying the rest of your instructions - any advice? Thanks.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 5 lety +1

      First of all I'd try your original code with plus /minus one digit on every wheel. Maybe you're lucky. If 00 does not cause the other wheels to bind then maybe 00 are no gates. Try 01 or 10 or 11 if this changes the other wheels behavior. If you have no success the others are binding very late and you have to use the method of gate analysis first for these wheels alone. Then when they are in a true gate, the remaining wheels should bind. Good luck.

      Is there a combination lock you like the best? that you would reccomend?

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 8 lety +3

      I have not done systematic testing on combination locks. Here (czcams.com/video/e7bqPakq2gI/video.html) you see all such kind of locks that I own.I would use the master and the ABUS (both 4 wheels with anti-decoding features) for low risk situations. I don't know of any high security combination lock (maybe beside of this czcams.com/video/-QWpzajEC2g/video.html). If a combination lock cannot be quickly opened by pull-picking (which almost everyone can learn in a few 10 minutes) then it's good enough for low risk situations. It's then at about the same level as a simple ABUS 5 pin tumbler padlock with key (czcams.com/video/s99QC0m2KK0/video.html). If you cannot quickly decode or quickly rake a lock and if there is no other quick bypass method like shimming it's OK for the low risk application. But if a thieve has more time to work on it unattended or can use bolt cutters then you need more secure stuff. Maybe there exist such combo locks (need to have a thick hardened shackle and at least 5 wheels in my opinion - as with 4 wheels you can do a brute force attack in 2-4 hours). For a nice secure key padlock I'd probably use this czcams.com/video/JBT0OkGEFug/video.html
