Lets Remove The Brake Assembly On The 430 Case

  • A very simple process of removing a severely stuck left brake is the topic of this short video. There's no a lot to it other than the removal of several bolts and dislodging the rust bond with a mallet. A brief look inside to see the extent of the water damage wraps up the video. Now all that's left is the disassembly and replacement of the damaged components.

      I can hear the Missus call out now: "CLEAN UP IN BAY ONE !!" Yessir, it does need a bit of attention doesn't it. I might power wash it the put it in the electrolysis tank.

      LOL....I'm just on a good string of luck that's all Mike. It'll probably come to an end soon... You and Rose have a nice day. It's been getting a bit chilly at nights down this way.

      Hahahaha.... I've not seen this particular braking set up before. But it looks simple enough. We will see once I get to the disassembly. Did I tell you there are SEVEN members of my immediate family that are teachers...? My son and I are the only two that are not. We are literally surrounded by 'em !! He and I both hated school with a passion....but we LOVE our teachers. LOL

      @@tractorman4461 Yes, come to think of it,. you are surrounded by 'education' aren't you! Hahaha.
      Actually, I'm not too far from this scenario myself, my Mother and Father were teachers, my brother-in-law was a teacher, and my nephew, his sister and another niece are or were all teachers. 'My GAWD, the woods is full of 'em!'

You are coming right along with the ole case!! Thank you sir for bringing us along for the journey!! Love seeing ya get after it!! Carnt wait to see what's next sir!! 😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍

      It's the same setup on the 73 Case 580B down at the daughters lake house but I've never had to get into them, so this setup is new territory to me too. The potential for a final drive issue is the specific reason I wanted to get this assembly removed. Now I know there's nothing to worry about in there so its back to serious stuff next. I've gotten a couple suggestions for reliable parts already from a couple guys, but I'm going to wait and see how big the list is....and the suspicion it gonna be big is proving to be real !! Thanks for the supportive comment my friend....kind words are always appreciated. ....now where's that other nickel. I got some stuff to buy.....LOL Private joke, huh. (-;

    Hi Wendell! Good troubleshooting, my friend! That’s an interesting brake design. I assume pushing the brake pedal pulls that band around the brake drum. Looking forward to seeing you fix it!

      I don't know the exact sequence, but there's a set of balls in there too that come into play. But we will figure it out once we get into the disassembly.

    Hello my friend. Is it just my bad eyes ,or was the paint scorched on the housing you removed ? Never seen a setup like that one. I am very interested to see how it works. Has always I liked and shared. All my very best to all.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před rokem

      Yes Bobby, it sure looked like it to me. I'm thinking the brakes got a little hot at some time or other....I'd suggest heavy braking on a downhill run with a heavy load in road gear. But that's just the thought I had when I saw that obviously scorched paint. Take care and have a wonderful day....it started up here a bit chilly at 42*.

    I should have let you know I had a video on how to maintain those brakes!!! Lol! It's video #34 on my page. The bolt you remove at the mark of 1:15 need not be removed at that point, it only supports the brake shoes. I don't know how far you dismantled this at that point, but it's a fairly easy principle to understand once dismantled. It is kind of a mechanical power brake. As for the oil seal, I wish I had a video of it when I changed it. You will notice a second plate against the side of the transmission. It holds the oil seal. The plate is held in place by a simple 3/8" countersunk Phillips screw. This plate has a flange on the inner side, with an O-ring seal. When you remove that plate, the shaft is then almost loose, revealing the taper bearing. Of course, it's better to drain the transmission before... Lol! Thanks!

      @tractorman4461  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, I saw that as soon as the assembly came off that that was just a pivot pin. I haven't disassembled it any further since removal. It's just on the cart. I'm still frying the bigger fish in the motor.... When I determined there was definitely a more serious problem in the engine, I thought it best to make sure there was or was not a bigger issue in the final drive before proceeding. Thanks for the tips on the seal, and I am sure I will reference back to your video when its time.

    Very interesting brake system.
    Not that I am a expert on anything I have never seen one like that.
    Good luck my friend..
    Can’t wait to see the next video..
    Where do you find parts?

Thanks Gus for always the encouraging words my friend. Stay safe and you and GP are right, anger and angst gets a fella nowhere in life...

  • @thecollectoronthecorner7061

    Dont know anything about the 430 brakes. We have some VAC case tractors. And the one that has band brakes is a older tractor however it has much better brakes than the one with disk brakes. on your430 possibly that band locks the outer drum causing wedges or ball s to tighten the disk?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před rokem

      Yes, I believe there IS a set of balls in there and I'm sure that's about how its supposed to work....I haven't disassembled it yet. The main thing was to remove it to make sure there was no final drive issue before getting deeper into the motor. I sure liked it when the axle turned the countershaft. Nothing to be concerned about in there at least.
