    So many campaigns on crowdfunding have all-ins…these can be hundreds to potentially over a thousand dollars. So how can we justify all of that money? Well, these are the top 14 games that I believe were not the most worthwhile backing.

    I do not own nor have I played any of these games except MHW, which I went all in on. I know it’s just opinion but I have the 100% opposite opinion. We just hunted Nergigante and Kushala Daora over 5 hunts this past weekend (my son and I). We love bouncing around all the monsters and hunting them based on what you need to keep progressing. I think 1 core set would give a VERY NARROW view of what you can do and lessen the experience of many. I just wanted to put this here for those reading and on the fence about the game. I’m also all in and Icebourne and can’t wait for it.

      @@BoardGameCo My playtime with games (solo) is pretty limited to the past year. Complex games the same. I have learned a lot from 175 and it's bling. ISSV similarly except the dice chucking was similar to what I have experienced with Dice Masters although on a higher level. It also has good bling appeal and a story line that is narrative. The 175 I am just waiting as I play to learn what the designers do with our solar system.
      Best of Holidays this season to you.

    Chronicles of drunagor I went back and forth on backing. I held out and glad I did. I went all in on Massive Darkness 2 and love it. I painted MD2 season 2 and 1. Only game I have done this with.

  • @successfulgeek
    @successfulgeek Před 7 měsíci +3

    I am so glad I stopped going all in on most of the campaign stuff I backed lately, but there is still a ton for me to go through. I haven't touched any of the Vindication expacs either despite it being my #1 game of all time, but I don't regret getting it all because it will get played.... someday...

  • @Mepper.
    @Mepper. Před 7 měsíci +2

    I definitely have more Vindication than I will ever manage to play. The same may be true for ISS Vanguard after I receive the wave 2 contents, but it isn't overwhelming yet with the wave 1 contents that I've had for over a year. I slightly different question is whether you ever have regrets from getting "over deluxification" upgrades like the burncycle Brassmag minis or the Tesseract metal cubes that change the game table presence but not the game play.

    Hi Alex, great 2 videos and is actually making me re-think some of the all-in games I have where I actually should pick the key ones and from the others just keep core game.
    I’m curious… what about Super Fantasy Brawl? Do you still have it in your collection?
    In my case I played all the characters from season 1 and 2 plenty of times and is a blast! (with a caveat that I have more tendency to season 1)

  • @1AngelAlita
    @1AngelAlita Před 7 měsíci +5

    Yeah, problem with campaign dungeon crawlers like Drunagor or Middara is that after you finish the campaign, there's really no reason to play it again. While Shadows of Brimstone, my favourite dungeon crawler of all time, has infinite replayability.

    • @ObsidianKnight90
      @ObsidianKnight90 Před 7 měsíci

      One of the reasons why I love Tiny Epic Dungeons is that with both expansions there's a surprising amount of replayability despite having a very small shelf footprint. Also, if you like eldritch monsters in dungeon crawls you might enjoy Machina Arcana, tons of replayability in that box.

  • @JasonSmithPsychedelicTherapist
    @JasonSmithPsychedelicTherapist Před 7 měsíci +2

    Massive Darkness 2 is one that I have absolutely NO REGRETS. I love EVERY BIT OF IT. Perfect ALL IN. I have the Bass Rum and Bones and always regret not having the rest... but maybe I'm better off not having it! Base Game of Burncycle... imagine having more extra stuff. Bass Stuff is fine and I'm happy with that. I was thinking of buying Monster Hunter world... just the base, and I'm glad I'm not getting more. Nemesis, I LOVE. It's AMAZING But... I think you might be right. I don't need the extra content, but I'll probably keep all three. And... Project Elite: I have the bass game and I've regretted not having extra content for a LONG TIME. But maybe I didn't miss out as much as I thought? ISS Vanguard: I have the base set and Wave 2 is coming... and I agree... I don't have ANY use for wave 2. I should never have gotten it. It's just wasted on me. Good video Alex. Thanks for letting me comment.

    @siriactuallysara Před 7 měsíci

    Your point on narrative and mechanics is really well said.
    Legacy games like pandemic or ticket to ride or clank. They are narrative light but they keep updating the mechanics to keep the game fresh.
    Oathsworn - the narrative is great and varied but after level 15 the mechanics don’t change and start becoming repetitive.
    Midarra- this game was a great balance of narrative and mechanics. Since it had a vast open ended skill set system with respecs, you could change the mechanics on the fly to try out new weapon abilities and combinations of different play styles, while it’s narrative was compelling.

    I also regret going all in on massive darkness 2. I also reduced it from like the 10 boxes it came in, into like 4 boxes. I like the additional mobs and roaming monsters, but some of the bigger expansions take up way too much shelf space and honestly I dont really need it.

  • @Grooty6226
    @Grooty6226 Před 7 měsíci

    So true. I want to experience all that there is in a game but there's only so much time in a year and fatigue sets in at some point. Fatigue seems to be related to the grind, duration, and intrigue levels. More grind = faster fatigue. Longer duration = more likely it will set in before the end. Intrigue is the idea of new or exciting content that keeps me engaged and looking forward to the next session - this counters the first 2, for a time.

    a bit of a side topic. When you combine expansions into say a core box to help reduce shelf clutter, what do you do with the empty expansion boxes? I usually toss them in recycling, but man, some of the boxes have some great artwork.

    I have been selling of some expansion content from some of my favourite games recently, it becomes clear over time that some expansions will never be used - games i slimmed a bit include Nemesis, Tainted Grail, Vindication, 7th Continent, Altar Quest - i still have a lot of content for each though it seems

  • @DumahAtreides
    @DumahAtreides Před 7 měsíci +1

    Vindication - I got the game this year starting from the all in and since I mix in different modules each game I feel I love having the variety system.
    Massive Darkness 2 - I have everything retail for the game including the crossover from the first game which gives the cards that I can get those small variations without all the minis. Agreed - no need for more than that.
    Marvel Champions - still buying everything, but I do at least keep up with the new content as it comes out. Would always love to play even more to come back against what I've already played again.
    Nemesis - I sold off original core recently and decided to stick to Lockdown and it's SG in one box and not back Retaliation. Never need more IMO - and like you prefer the full coop of it.
    Monster Hunter - I only ordered retail of the MHW box and figured it can be a one in done. Like that no need for expansions. Depending on how I feel after, will likely do the same for Iceborn.
    Tanares Adventures - ordered the Legendary Pledge...which is likely too much, but it sounds soooo good.

    I feel just the same as you about Vindication! I love the game and haven’t played all of the modules in the base (esp as I often teach it to new people) so haven’t played the expansions. Also the Big Box now makes it too hard to take it with me. I may actually disaggregate it back to the base and expansion boxes to make it easier to take and table! Strange stuff! Thanks for the video.

    Recently bought a Marvel Champions collection with core, Red Skull, Green Goblin, and 9 heroes. There was so much content, and seemed so daunting. Decided to break it down to all of the individual hero packs and campaigns. Need to play each hero 4 time (once for each aspect) before adding the next content, and play them in release order. Made it through 4 heroes so far. Still have months of content before I need to purchase anything else. Looking forward to adding Red Skull villains soon to extend my options.

  • @girlmeetsmeeple5415
    @girlmeetsmeeple5415 Před 7 měsíci

    I agree with so much of this.
    Someone asked on Facebook about nemesis the other day and what I said was very similar to you. I love the game. It’s fun when I get it to the table, but I won’t be getting the third one. I probably shouldn’t have gotten the second. It’s an excellent game, but I really only need one version.
    And arena the contest, again love it, but I’ve hit content fatigue with all the kickstarters. It’s so much storage space and money and a lot of the time most of the minis are on the table once for a very short amount of time. Maybe if it was my only big mini campaign game, but it’s not and if there is more, I just can’t get any more of it. I’m done.
    And too many bones-how I felt that. I have all but Riffle (?) and I love it but there are so many gearlocs I just haven’t played and I don’t know when I will. One day.
    I also stopped buying expansions for marvel champions . . . Sort of. I’m probably going to pick up age of apocalypse because it was one of my favorite sagas back in the 90s when I was a kid reading comics. And I’ll probably pick up Deadpool because . . . Deadpool. Sigh, okay probably need an intervention still.
    And everything you said about vindication! Yes. All of that.
    Anyways. Great list. And I love how they aren’t regrets, you love these games, this is just acknowledgment that you didn’t need it all. Totally feel this.

  • @user-st8wo3jl8l
    @user-st8wo3jl8l Před 6 měsíci

    I think as a general rule of thumb. The shorter the game, the more variety you need, the longer the game, the less of those games you need and the less expansions you need.

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  Před 6 měsíci

      I agree to an extent, for me. The caveat would be that I just don't want a gameplay experience to feel like I'm iterating on perfection, I want to feel like I'm constantly reapproaching it. A good example of this would be things like the cards and agricola, they make the game go from a constant exercise and optimization to having to readjust to incredibly impactful changes to that game every time

  • @beerman2000
    @beerman2000 Před 7 měsíci

  • @siriactuallysara
    @siriactuallysara Před 7 měsíci +2

    With chronicles of Drunagor.
    I sold all the expansions and the enemy packs. But then when I went through the campaign the enemies got really repetitive half way through. So I wish I had those extra minis. But I did basically get the base game and KS stretch goals for free so I can’t complain.
    Massive darkness 2. I sold more then half of the all in pledge to break even and kept the core box and a few expansions. The game isn’t for me. I ended up not liking the different class play styles. Making it difficult to solo and most where gimmicks.
    But for the minis alone it’s worth keeping.

    So true...I love a game, get all the content, but will never get to it all. Nemesis, Massive Darkness, Arena the Contest, ISS Vanguard...I think my biggest issue is the space. How do you condense it down to a manageable size. I am nearing retirement )so hope to have more time) and I love painting all the miniatures, but the space is sucks up is massive. Would be interested in how you condense the 50k boxes of some of these games down to a manageable size. Oh, I do like final girl but don't play it near enough to justify that I have all of it.

    I got all of Rum & Bones Second Tide supercheap because the game seems to have a bad reputation. And tbh it is one of the games where I dont mind the tons of minis. I have a flipbook with all characters and everyone I introduce to the game has so much fun picking their heroes because there are just so many characters. There really is something for everyone. The plastic coins and the other stuff is ok, but I really dig all the champions. Also it is so much fun painting them.

    Is there a (good/great) game that resembles Martha Wells' Murderbot series? I actually assume you don't have time to read books, but they're usually very short (half of the audiobooks are 3-5 hours). I've only been following board game channels for like 5 weeks but I love the rush I get when I see a game with exceptional artwork (Anachrony, Scythe, DEI, and many others) w/ the sci-fi/dystopia/space opera theme. I want all of those. I was actually considering backing the new Nemesis but (thankfully) the play throughs I viewed either confused me thoroughly or just ruined the mood because the players were joking all the time (the risk we run of content creators coming across like failed actors).
    I dig your channel and the rapport you have with Meg, Devon and your other game friends.

      I did the one shipping option when backing it, so I will hopefully receive my all in pledge soon. Is it like Tainted Grail where all the extra minis aren't necessary, or rven reality used? Ended selling off my monsters of sundropped set shortly after realizing they weren't needed.

    I'm glad I only got one MHW box in retail. My son loves the IP and one box felt like enough content.
    For TMB I'm also not planning to get everything. I got the base game and two characters now and will add some expansion and two more character boxes next year. But I don't want to get more content after that.
    For Vindication I mostly regret backing the campaign, since it's so much cheaper at retail now. But apart from that I'm enjoying playing it as solo experience with the various addons to spice up the experience.
    For ISS Vanguard I chose to skip on all extra miniatures, but did get the additional gameplay content, because my husband (who usually doesn't loves to play board games) totally fell in love with the game. That was one big selling point for me. 😀
    I did back the second Marvel Dice Throne campaign with gameplay and minis and tokens, but was definitely hesitant as well. But since we own only one box and two character packs (and my son owns all of them ;-) ) I opted to get at least one more box for myself. After that I also don't plan to get more.
    My biggest regrets might arrive next year when the backlog of campaigns delayed in the past two years finally arrives.😀
    Also, I try to talk myself out of backing the all-in for DCeased (currently only at 1$), but the theme totally got me. It would be my first (and definitely only) Zombicide game! But still... I will try to hold back, at least a little bit.
    Finally also passed on Primal after much consideration. I still think it will be a good game, but I have too much content already coming (and MHW is already here). I might a copy on the second hand market eventually after playing through the rest of my games.

    I play a lot, a lot of Marvel Champions. I went the opposite way where I just bought multiple expansion packs so I can have 10+ hero decks ready at any moment. You play so many other games; I imagine any LCG would be too much to keep up with.

    I'd love to hear what games you actually regret to have backed. I won't lie in that I was surprised by this list as I was expecting more of the "regrets" because the ones that I have gone all in on that I shouldn't have, I regret. Only 1 all in pledge wasn't played with a lot or all of the expansion content and I love - and that is Sleeping Gods - I've done some of the expansion stuff but there is so much I haven't used yet. The biggest game I shouldn't have gone in on and regret was the Everdell Complete Collection which was just so massive it never got to the table. I was lucky that I was able to get back most of my money (all minus $50) when I resold it.

    Project elite is one of those games I felt the same way I was like dear God for the price and what you use I get it. However I found you can literally just take things out of expansions and plug and play with base game and it's become a really enjoyable experience! Turrets different monsters. I took mines one time and integrated it into the core game etc.i think with most games it's just making the effort to pull out the expansions and games you have to use the content it's all to easy to simply just grab the core game and go.

I'm so glad I skipped all the base content to get the newer stuff only... I still have 13 gearlocks, Splice and Dice, Unbreakable, Undertow, etc which is a lifetime of content. I did not need the chest to fit everything perfectly in a single Kallax and paid only half the all in with no regrets! I did not get the cheapest units but saved tremendously while getting the most fun and engaging content in my opinion. I
    In other words I got the best end point rather than the best starting point.

    I really like the Chronicles expansion for Vindication. That was the only one I got because I was sold hard on it and it did not disappoint. I do wish the game was cooperative though.
    I’m still getting all the marvel champions packs lol hope to play them some day.
    For massive darkness I just have the base game and the update pack. Missed the kickstarter.
    For Project Elite I have the original version and the CMON retail version. Probably don’t need both lol
    Dice Throne I only have the retail set of 4 marvel characters. Considered the xmen kickstarter with coop but I wasn’t sold on how interesting the coop would be and didn’t love the competitive from what I played. It didn’t feel like there were many interesting things you could do. Defense is mostly just roll the dice to get your one defense skill. Offense you just go for whatever you’re close to.
    Debating the nemesis kickstarter but I prefer cooperative to semi coop traitor stuff and not sold on how interesting the gameplay is. It does look cool though.

    For me, Zombicide Invader was a game I shouldn't have gone all in on. This was the first Zombicide game I backed on Kickstarter -- and the last. All of the survivor minis are fun... but they create way too much analysis paralysis for players trying to decide who to play. The extra box is invader minis are fun, but honestly not so unique and different that I feel they add ENOUGH game play value or even value in the variety of minis. I only ever table the core box and have plenty of fun with just that.
    This taught me a valuable lesson about the other Zombicide games and I've come to the conclusion that I'm perfectly fine just with the retail versions.
    Contrast that with Rising Sun. Even though I don't really table the extra content for Rising Sun, it's the minis that I really wanted in my collection.

    For me, its Oathsworn. Love the game and we're getting close to completion. But it's taken us about 5-6 hours to play each chapter - we spend a lot of time deckbuilding before each encounter and strategizing during the encounter... In any event, we'll have experienced 5 full player characters over the course of the story. On the one hand, I'd love to revisit with other characters but on the other, do I really want another 100+ hours? And then there's the Armory pack - seemed like a nice idea but turned out to be totally impractical. If it was smaller, maybe, but given its 4 huge boxes...hmmm...

    • @girlmeetsmeeple5415
      @girlmeetsmeeple5415 Před 7 měsíci

      Personally, my plan with Oathsworn is to one shot fights I’m interested in revisiting with new characters and build them out as if I’d played to that point.
      The narrative is very much on rails, so I don’t see a point playing through the whole campaign again, but a few fights to get a feel for the characters . . . Yeah. That sounds good. And then I’ll likely be done with the game. It’s good. But it’s a lot of shelf space and I just don’t feel it has a ton of replayability.

    I think this guy is wrong about Marvel Dice Throne. If You get rid of molded inserts for each character and put everything in e.g. plastic bags, You could easily put all Dice Throne collection in one collectors box. It is just 5 dice and some cardboard tokens, small 30 card deck, and foldable hero board for each character. In Dice Throne there is nothing fragile. If You do care about state of Your Marvel United minis, then You need more space for them.

    I sold my Marvel Champions. It's a fantastic game and I bought every expansion and played hundreds of games. But in the end, checking back on BGG Stats app, I found that the last 1,5 year I had only played 3 games, while buying every expansion along the way. Apparently my interest has shifted to other stuff (I felt like it had been only 3 months since my last game, which wasn't the case at all).
    Marvel DT: I have this game (not all-in) and am getting the X-men DT too with Missions. I have Santa vs Krampus and DT Adventures. For a while I considered getting S1 and S2 as well, but I have decided not to, as it's too much content and does not fit in with Marvel. I am considering getting rid of DTA too, when I get Missions, but not sure yet. So much shelf space indeed and so much content, so I try to limit it somewhat.
    Marvel United: I bought a few boxes and even pledged S3 (not all-in, but a lot of content), but have now lost all interest really. The game feels way too repetitive every time, so I'm selling my collection and will sell my S3 KS as soon as it arrives. Valuable lesson there though, the FOMO really got me and I think I watched your video about not backing it just after I did.... which was too late.

  • @daedalus25
    @daedalus25 Před 7 měsíci

    I was with you on most of these, but you could not be more wrong about Marvel Champions. It's not just more of the same. Every expansion adds exciting new ways to play the game and new heroes that feel completely different from old heroes. Given that you're showing the second to last expansion, when you say you finally stopped buying expansions, that means you only didn't get the latest campaign. That one introduces player side schemes, a new, interesting way to apply your thwart to get some interesting rewards. But it seems maybe you just don't like X-Men since you haven't used any of the X-Men content.
    Having said that, deck building can be pretty daunting to do every time. That's why I only do it once. I've spent the past 2 weeks, probably investing more time than a full-time job, creating a deck for each and every one of my 49 characters. Now I don't have to do deckbuilding any more, as they are all prebuilt, so the next time I play, I just randomly grab a couple decks and I'm done.

    I've been careful about all-in lately. I went all in on Cyberpunk 2077 because its a game that I suspect the content will see play for me and my group. But other games, I've regretted getting the extra crowdfunding extras. It's one thing if an expansion comes out a year or two later, as that can be something that provides new ways to play based on player feedback, or desire for new content. But I've rarely needed the all-in nonsense and rarely gotten around to it.
