2023 is done (almost) and there have been a lot of good games, a lot of ok games, and a few great games...and some of those, I just wasn't expecting. These are those games.

I agree about For Northwood! I wasn’t sure how solo trick taking would work. Turns out, really well!!!
So glad General Orders was a pleasant surprise!
I was surprised to not see the Spanish Inquisition, because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! :)
Lol fair
You forgot a timestamp for Mother of Frankenstien. It's after Run!
Thanks for the content, long time viewer, but haven’t commented in awhile. I like this video in particular because it’s all games I’ve never heard of or games not talked about. Maybe refreshing nowadays with all the overlap of top 10 lists appearing. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 it's definitely a mix of games, but yeah, inherently the format of it being a surprise means the big name games are not as obviously common on this
For Northwood is great for people who play solo and enjoy trick taking! I love its small size and cute artwork too. General Orders looked appealing to me, because I love small box games and Osprey, but I already have Memoir and Undaunted, and Maquis is my small box war- themed game. And no solo mode. But maybe someday if I ever finish Undaunted.
Wizards of the Grimoire is so good!! The brothers/designers did all the art themselves. Every single card is completely different and do completely different things. It's very good.. The spell cool down is very innovative too... And it's super cheap!!
Agreed on all counts 🙂
I was surprised by how much variability in the For Northwood. Great small box.
Exactly!
Pretty sure you've convinced me on Run. I don't own any hidden movement games, and I tend to not purchase games that play better at more than two players (Mind MGMT) as a rule. From everything I've seen, it's been well received.
Interesting take on Farshore. I had written it off after hearing about the similarities. But if you keep going back, I’ll have to give it a play!
We ended up getting two copies of Junk Drawer to accommodate more players. Such an easy game to teach and table. Gameplay for a larger group that isn't social deduction is great for our group's tastes, and the simultaneous play means no one is bored with a high player count. Ended up being one of the most requested games with our work lunchtime gaming group.
I completely agree with your thoughts/request on the General Orders theme. I would have bought it already if not for the WWII theme (which is touchy subject in my family). I'm hoping this is the first of a series with different themes with each game.
Great, great video. I like these aspects of expectations vs. actual fun very intriguing. I want to try For Northwood and Skyrockets
For Northwood is amazing, one of my highlights of the year for sure
I love General Orders. I lined up before the show opened with around 15 people ahead of me at GenCon to pick it up.
It's excellent and I totally wasn't expecting it
I know you were looking for a game to go next to your speaker and I think Unsettled is a good call for that space. Well done!
shoutout to taylor's tricktaking table!
My surprise for the year was Earth. Did not back it, did not expect I would like it, and then I did play it and I really enjoyed it and then ended up getting it.
Nice, enjoy it :)
Sankore was a complete surprise for me as well. I hadn't even heard of it but I was at a convention last month and randomly run into one of the designers demoing the game. I guess I didn't run into any rulebook/teach problems because of that but I had great fun.
Being taught by the designers would avoid the rule books 🙂
thanks for the list - would you be able to include pics of the games in the future?
Everdell Farshore blew me away with how good it was. I sold Everdell after being not very enthused by some elements, especially the goal system. Fare shore is SO Much better. outstanding.
I still have room for both in my heart, but it was definitely better than I was expecting
Cool list. I think 3 of these games are of interest to me; I almost backed the new Wizards of The Grimoire game/expansion but it was competing with too many other things for my dollars and hopefully I can get it and the original game down the road. Monique & Naveen did a playthrough a short time ago (or maybe they did it ages ago but I just found it a short time ago). Looking forward to the upcoming lists as well. Thanks!
Yeah, it's a great game 🙂
I was surprised by Fliptown.
That is a fun one 🙂
Wizards of the Grimoire is great. Some of the cards and strategies can feel a little unbalanced but the balance is generally quite solid.
My biggest surprise of 2023 was Tales from the Red Dragon Inn. Its combat is often compared to Gloomhaven but I think TftRDI is cleaner, faster, and easier to table. The story is also leagues better than Gloomhaven with witty banter between party members and a cohesive narrative for each of its five Chapters. I honestly can't imagine playing any version of Gloomhaven over this game (aside from perhaps Buttons & Bugs as a portable pure solo experience).
EDIT: My second biggest surprise of 2023 is Warp Lancer, a PNP / TheGameCrafter game which is essentially FTL: Faster Than Light meets Iron Helm. It plays quite similarly to FTL in terms of powering systems with energy to fight hostile ships, and like Iron Helm with its card exploration mechanic, draw 2 from a deck of 16 cards, flip one and keep it or pay a resource to flip the other. The combat is occasionally plodding especially in the early game, like when an enemy ship literally can't break through your Shields so you might as well just 'win' the fight without dice rolls. Other times combat can be frustratingly difficult, especially in later sectors and the final boss which feels more like a DPS check than a tactical challenge. It's still a game I quite enjoy and am glad exists, it feels like it was made for me in particular.
Now you help me wanting to play tales from the Red dragon inn 🙂
Sankore looks a lot like Merv, is that what you were reaching for? Nevermind, you got there,
Yep 🙂
Best surprises for me were City of the Great Machine and Hybris.
Okay, maybe Hybris was less of a surprise but rather it delivered the goods and then some.
City for the Great Machine was a huge surprise tho. 1vM gameplay but also featuring a really good solo/co-op mode? Unexpectedly amazing game, highly recommend.
I was also pleasantly pleased that the two TCGs I decided to back on KS, Grand Archive and Sorcery!, actually turned out to be fun games and not just evil collectible nonsense.
I need to try hybris
As always, thanks for your hard work and time devoted to this wonderful hobby of board games and the universe revolving around this topic. I'm curious what your opinion is on the remaster of the textbooks for the second edition of Pathfinder and whether you like the Witcher Old World board game. Merry Christmas to you and all positively crazy people who love board games!
Ty for your videos!
Always :)
Sankore = Merv I think
Merv was my first thought also
That's the one :)
Hi Alex, how about a current review on Tanares. You have been playing for quite a while now with your playthroughs which we are not watching due to spoilers. A second video on your thoughts of the game now and how they might have changed would be appreciated. Any chance of this happening?
I'd definitely consider that one I'm done the full campaign
You blurred out your thumbnail!! Baby steps to completely remove spoilers!
Yep 🙂 thinker themer does it and I think it's a great idea
Sankore was great even though you two stomped me at it. I agree I was a little skeptical at first glance of it but really enjoyed it.
Thanks for coming! Want to play again this week?
@@BoardGameCo definitely would be up for playing again. Ill email you for details.
You’ve definitely piqued my interest in both Run and Sankore!
Sankoré is pronounced "san-Kor-ay", FWIW.
Hey! Ran into you, figuratively at PAX-U day 2 I think, do you remember what you were recommending at that time?
Ummm...I need more context :) Earthborne rangers maybe?
@BoardGameCo It went in one ear and out the other, I had never heard of it, and didn't want to take more of your time asking you to repeat it, so much going on! I think you were with Meg, near Devon's booth but not at it. No worries, just wondering if one of these ten was it? I was working with Mr. Tracey in the... you know, greatest game in the world area. 😎
@BoardGameCo Thanks! You just gave me about 5 new games to buy that I don't need! Isn't our obsession wonderful! Be safe!
@BoardGameCo tall guy with more melanin then the rest. 😎
Did you play Sankoré solo ?
Not yet
Sky Team is my Game of the Year. Looks generic and boring, but damn is it fun.
