I just evaluated the following compressors: Great River 501 based on "Pulse Width Modulation" compression, Neve 535 "Diode Bridge", Neve 543 "VCA", Serpent Splice 1176 "FET", SSL E-DYN MK2 "VCA", IGS ONE LA "Opto", Wes Audio RHEA "Vari Mu", Elysia Xpressor "VCA", and finally the Chandler Limited EMI TG "Opto" compressor. Of all these hands down my favorite was the Chandler. second place goes to the Serpent Splice MK2 and third place to the Neve 535 Diode Bridge. My source was for bass guitar only.
I agree, on bass it was really nice, as Opto's often are. I actually like the sharp setting best on bass, as it added some aggression and snap to the transients. For smoothing the transients, then the rounded worked well.
Curious on which one you went for? I started with the retro man was I disappointed because it gives u that fat creamy coloration that u would expect from a good tube compressor but the bummer was that it was Giving me alot of white noise like overwhelming amount of white noise! Returned it for another one hoping the issue would be solve had the same issue idk if this was just something I went through but now I'm waiting for a chandler let's see how that goes
@@mannyalv4435 Decided not to jump into the 500 series yet. I am seriously considering 2 Distressors instead. I think long run it’ll be a better investment in the work I do.
sad that it does not work on vocals... very jumpy. Not what I would want. Only bass was a good example where it worked. But most Comps can work on Bass. The API 525 is excellent on Bass and Vocals. On Vocals I would choose the API or the IGS One-LA. Both would work. The API is more rock solid and fast like a 1176 on steroids. The IGS is very near to a La2A 19" for cosy stuff.
Very different compressors. For vocals he acme, because it's smoother. The TG is agressive, and I'd say the TG has more color than the acme. But the acme has color to
Very different type compressor. The ELOP is hifi sounding and really smooth. The TG opto can get really aggressive. For vocals or acoustic guitar I'm reaching for the ELOP, for drums, bass, or other instruments I'm reaching for TG.
I’m looking for a compressor that’s similar to the tube tech CL 1B. Opto compressor with an attack and release setting. Is there anything like that in the 500 series?

I want to try that Neve 535
That sharp knee on drums is like watching a human turn into a werewolf.

Good stuff man! If you ever need anything from Vintage King, feel free to reach out! Always happy to hook it up with some discounts 👍
Sounds great. I'm about to jump into the 500 club and debating between the Chandler and Doublewide as my first 500 series compressors.

Man your demo is better than Vintage King’s, specially, bc of the sound sources 👍

Oh man loved it on bass!

Great review. It's quite aggressive on hard/sharp knee isn't it? And really bites - especially on the bass.(p.s. new sub from me!)
@Czar, which would you choose between this and the ACME?
Very different compressors. For vocals he acme, because it's smoother. The TG is agressive, and I'd say the TG has more color than the acme. But the acme has color to
How do you like this compared to the Manley elop?
Very different type compressor. The ELOP is hifi sounding and really smooth. The TG opto can get really aggressive. For vocals or acoustic guitar I'm reaching for the ELOP, for drums, bass, or other instruments I'm reaching for TG.
How would you compare this one to the Wa2a? Which one do you like better? Thanks
Very different compressors. If you want smooth slow opto compression than wa2a. If you wants fast and aggressive then the TG

Only thing I've heard of in the 500 series that's similar to one is the crane song falcon
Buzz Essence
what compressor would you recommend for vocals 500 serries?
For singing vocals I opto compressors. I've been liking the tk audio T-komp on vocals lately. Versatile enough to work on singing and rap vocals
