You just helped a 52 year old widow get her oven going!! Thank you.
I fixed my dryer twice (same problem a year apart) and my old stove once, now I need to fix my two year old oven. I'm a 66 year old female.
All I can say is, God bless you. In the midst of COVID-19, NOBODY is coming out to fix the oven, but now it works. If you're ever in Cleveland and the pandemic is over, my family invites your family to come over for lasagna! Signed, Grateful in Cleveland.
Packing information in a short video, without spending viewer time on trying to entertain makes a good how-to video. Nice work.
People: You have to hit the thumbs up and leave a comment so that this video gets noticed by the algorithm. This fixed my non-working oven for free and it only took 20 minutes or so. This is fantastic information that needs shared.
Thank you so much for this video! My wife and I just bought our house and the oven wasn't staying on during preheating. I searched and searched and finally stumbled on your video! Followed your instructions and my oven works!!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Thank you!!! Saved us some money for sure!!!!
I cleaned the burners on our stove on Sunday after watching this video. It's working great. My wife thought we needed a New stove. Thanks for making this video! You saved my lots of money!
Appreciate this! It solved my issue as well.
Tip: Put a large clip (I used a chip clip) on the wire when you unplug the igniter to keep the wire from falling through the hole!
Took 2 hours to cook a pizza tonight because my oven wouldn't stay lit. Sanding the igniters made my oven heat up faster than ever. Thanks so much!
This worked like a charm! Thank-you so much for posting this! The last time I had this issue I spent $35 on a new thermocouple, and this time I spent $0.
This worked perfectly. I was at my wits end and was about to start buying parts. A few screws and some sandpaper and I’m back up and running!! Thank you so much for posting!
Thank you!!!! I ordered and replaced the ignitor thinking that was the problem. But still didn't work. Watched your vid, clean the tubes, and now it works! Tube wasn't even super dirty, but I guess it may have been just enough for the gas to not flow though.
This is what makes CZcams great! Real men sharing real solutions. Thanks!
The reason you need to clean the igniter probe is that after the igniter sparks and it ignites the gas the probe measures the conductivity through the flame to keep the flame on. If it is dirty the resistance will be too high and it will not measure the right resistance so it will shut down or not ignite and the oven temp will fall down too far before it ignites again. So keep it clean by using fine sandpaper. It is important to know the reason why this is happening. If there is no ignition or spark then the igniter board is bad and need to be replaced. Not a big job, but a bit pricey.
I replaced the oven igniter board and the igniters for both bake and broil don’t spark to ignite either the upper or lower oven burners.

Press the off button twice then start you will get in diagnostic mode (Off Off On).What error code do you get ? Check what error code responds to ? You can look those up on net. Does the stove igniter work? If it works then it might not be the igniter board b/c that board controls all igniters You might have a broken wire problem somewhere or the main board problem? Why did you replace both igniters you should have changed one first.
This is an explanation why u need to clean the igniter.
This is the reason why you need to clean the igniter rod or pin
Most spark igniters use flame rectification to prove that the flame has fired. Flame rectification is a process where a low A/C voltage is applied to the flame rod, and when that flame rod is inserted into a proper flame, the voltage converts to a D/C voltage by traveling through the flame to ground.
@@zakyxzaky Thanks so much for your reply. The error code that I got was kinda weird. It looked like an upside down capital F, followed by a 5 (or S?), followed by another upside down capital F. Haven't found the codes on the net yet. All four of the stove top burners light, so i think the blue spark module on the back of the stove is okay, and like wise, the gas safety valve may be okay, but I'll need to check it for continuity when I get home and also see if it is a two part safety valve, one for the range, and one for the oven. I'll also need to disassemble the back of the range more fully to look for broken or burned wires.
Sorry, I misspoke in my post above. I did not replace both igniters (broil and bake) yet. I did replace the igniter electronic 'board' with the two green (igniter?) capacitors(?) on the backside of the range top.. because wthere are two little 'snaps' from the (mother?) board that contains the clock, but nothing happens with the oven igniters sparking.
@@jimlelan4906 You also might have a bad main control board.
Does it matter if the rod isn’t completely straight? Say while cleaning it bends slightly but you’re unaware. Would it matter in terms of regulating temp or anything?
I'm glad that other people rarely clean under their stove as I never do.Great fix ,took 20 minutes to fix my stove the Tuesday before Thanksgiving
Thanks for this video. The teardown instruction was great, but the removal of the oxidation was brilliant. I was on the verge of either buying a new oven or a $100 burner tube assembly. I think this fix may allow this oven to last a few more years.
HEY! It worked! Whirlpool - ignitor clicking but not oven not lighting. Did not pull the ignitor all the way out, but followed your directions and sanded the thing clean. Had to reposition the gas burner once afterward - we had it angled away from the ignition. Got it settled in and it LIGHTS ON THE FIRST SPARK! Thanks, Adam DIY! Took a few hours today (too old and stiff to stay on the floor very long, but done in a day, and only paid a Mac&Cheese lunch to the brother who spent his knees and time on the project! YES! Don't need a new oven!
Now, can we do the same thing with the stove top igniters?
Thank you, you saved our 2017 Thanksgiving Day Meal! We woke up and it would not stay lit. Borrowed sandpaper from neighbor and got rocking n rolling on your simple to follow video... you rock!
Grateful for this video!! About 30 mins of work and our oven is firing right up again! Straight forward and concise, thank you!
Wanted to let you know this video saved my wife and I a visit from a repair tech. Main oven wouldn’t light (clicked 4x and could smell gas, no flame). The electrode(?) was coated in black and I sanded it back to shiny silver. Thank you!
KUDOS!!!! I have the same ignition setup. Has been not consistently lighting for a little while. Am getting ready for Thanksgiving and it got worse the day before. Pulled the manifold out, and took the ignition off, and sanded down the electrode and the metal tip that the charge makes contact with and VOILA... worked like a charm. You saved me $50 on parts...THANKS!!!!
Great info and still valid. I just replaced igniter in Whirlpool oven. Ours would glow but apparently not hot enough to signal gas to turn on. I have no multimeter so cant verify if resistance was out if range. Purchased part from Amazon for about $32 and got in two days. Took about 5 min to swap part. Now lights and heats up beautifully.
Thank you much for the video.
This was awesome! I have been dealing with this issue for about 6 months and this solved my issue. Thank you.
This worked for me too. But mine was a bit more stubborn. Had been since new (a bad oven overall). I also drilled out the holes next to the igniter and closed the air vent down a bit. For the first time ever, the oven started on the very first igniter click. Very happy with the re-engineering.. Saved me from buying a new oven as I was ready to junk this piece of ..... Thanks for the how to. PS - have some duct tape ready to secure the igniter wire!
Only video with this type of igniter (others connected wire nuts or wired connectors). The video saved me a great deal of frustration and the cost for having a technician make the repair.
I was able to fix my oven by watching this - THANK YOU!!!
I did exactly what you did and my oven now works like new!!! THANKS!!!
Thanks! The walkthrough of the teardown and likely causes was just what I needed.
Thanks Adam. My husband followed your instructions and it worked. So appreciate your help.
Thanks for your video. My oven was not lighting but the top burners and broiler were lighting fine. I cleaned the oven ignitor rod (center electrode) and the surrounding cage which acts as the ground electrode. There is a small tip on the ground cage that is the closest point to the ignitor rod {center electrode), I cleaned that tip with sandpaper and adjusted the gap because it looked like the heat had expanded the cage a bit. Now the oven burner lights perfectly. As zee zee said below in his comment the ignitor uses a flame rod sensing system which uses the flame as conductive path. so it is important to keep the rod and ground cage clean.
How many millimeters is the property distance between the cage and electrode? Thanks
Thanks for sharing. I've been having problems for months and got to where I just quit baking. I know, lame. But today I've dug into things and I'm hoping this works. Thanks again for sharing :)
You say you're not smart and you are smart guy and keep on making quick fixes on gas stove ovens and blessed be to you and always 😎👍
Thank you so much for this! I saw another video showing how to install a new ignitor, but considering it is Thanksgiving DAY, your video showed me an option of cleaning it and not only saved having to replace the ignitor just yet, but the headache of how to find somewhere open to acquire it on a holiday. . . . . . . thanks for saving me some $$$$, time and headaches--not to mention the Thanksgiving Dinner, especially the Pumpkin Pies! One of the best repair videos yet. Thanks!
In this case the flame rod acts as a rectifier or diode. AC current is applied. If there is no flame, nothing happens. If there is flame and carbon particles, the AC plus arcs to the large ground. When the current reverses, the pulse cannot reach the tiny surface of the rod tip. DC current goes back to the control and tells the gas to remain feeding. A dirty rod interrupts the rectification.
Hey man thanks for the video I almost just spent 55$ on the igniter but did what you said and it worked!! Appreciate you taking the time to explain!
Thanks Adam! Taking off the oxidation worked. Saved me from ordering a new $8 igniter. I owe you a beer.
Thank you. Still I'm the pandemic, can't have a repair guy come over, but I remember doing this well over 20 years ago on a different oven, but forgot the steps. Thank you.
Thanks for this video. Service calls are ridiculously expensive. Your video saved me $300.
I didn't take out gas tube or ignitor, but I did use sand paper 400 grit and a .17 cal barrel wire brush to clean ignitor. Before cleaning the ignitor would click at least twice before lighting, if it lite at all. Most of time it wouldn't lite, on/off til it lite. Now, first click and is lite. Thank you
Thank you so much, I used sand paper as you showed and my ignitor works perfectly. Probably saved myself at least $150 worth of repairs.
Awesome!
this is exactly what I am looking for as amana range owner!!! Thank you very much !
Replaced the bottom igniter before I got to this video. Started reading through the comments because it was still doing exactly what this video describes. The real problem was overloaded bottom cooling rack. I had it stuffed to the gills. Took three baking sheets out. Works the first time every time.
very good ideas !
Just tried this today..... worked on the first try!! Thank you! I figured this was the issue.
Great video, it worked. I'm a happy camper. Have a Marry Christmas
Thank you!!! Did exactly what you did and it works perfectly!!!! I should have known because I had the same problem with my gas furnace..............clean the ignitor!!
Perfect step by step and it solved my oven problem as well!
This fixed my problem. Thanks a bunch!
Feb. 7th. 2023... I cant say anything anyone else has not said, great content 6 years later. Thank you sir! Ah, yes.... and Otter Pop!
Thank you so much. i did by myself. I fixed my oven, thank you!
Hey, I'd already ordered the parts, but your video allowed me to fix it in time to bake a cake for my twins' 5th birthday! The parts won't get here for weeek. Thanks, sir.
Excellent, worked great. Thank you
Thank you so much, your fix worked for us!
Thanks Adam ,
I have been waiting for 429day for your video.
Thanks I will try
That's exactly what I had to do, of course before I watched this video...got oven working (broiler didn't have an issue) put it together...and then it didn't. Guess I'll be taking it apart again. Great video....
Thanks so much. Oven looks exactly like mine! Time will tell if it fixes my intermittent oven problems. R.
You just saved me a couple of hundred dollars (that I don't have right now) by fixing it myself. Thank you!
I was able to fix my range using the info from the video and from some of the comments. I have a Maytag MGG8700DH2 and the oven was very slow to warm up. The burner would light but the flame was not very big. I cleaned the ignitor as shown in the video but I also noticed a little bit of debris in the burner orifice (the little jet that feeds gas into the burner element). Between cleaning both of those things the flame is now bigger and the oven heats much faster. From room temperature to 350 degrees takes about 10 minutes now.
Hi Mike here from Plus 8 Precision I just followed your tip and so far so good. The igniter seems to also be a flame sensor like on a furnace. Thanks for posting...
Mike - Plus8Precision
Thanks, I will try this on my oven to.
This solution worked for me. Good to know! Thanks for posting.
Lol to the otter pop, thanks on the video!
I'm watching this from all the way in the United States Virgin Islands ! ! !
Thank you so much. This worked great!!
Appreciate you man thanks for the upload. It worked right away. If I don't forget, I too will provide an update.
Awesome video! Oven works now lol. Thanks so much👌👍
A very clever diagnosis. Our oven had slowly gotten to the point that it would not re-light on long baking cycles even though it was only two years old. We live in an area of very high humidity and the ignitor had corroded enough to weaken the spark sufficiently to prevent re-lighting. A little work with the sandpaper as the author suggested and voila! A perfectly working oven again, I take back all the curses and hexes I put on the Maytag people.
I never wold have thought to sand the igniter, it got my oven working again thanks. know I'll order another one for when it stops working again.
Nice job Adam👍
Perfect!! Saved me from ordering replacement parts - thanks!!
. I
Thank you for the video!! Dirty oven igniter needed cleaning is all.
Not to mention the dirty oven and floor
My wife almost had me for a new oven, thanks to your video 😉
You rock, dude! While watching this, I recalled a similar problem with my gas furnace a few years ago. Cleaned the flame sensor and BAM back in business. Thanks!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I was trying to bake a burger today and my bottom burner wouldn't ignite. I took the oven apart and sanded the ignition wire thing and put it all together and it worked. I was about to buy a new one because I had run out of ideas for what to do.
my gas burner on and later off few minute later and
Backoff20019 made the repairs save $110.00 on service call
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you. Im going to try this.
excellent!!!!
Wow I have this exact range at home and the oven has been out for quite some time. Guess what I'm doing tomorrow lol, thanks man!
Well, did it work?? I’m in the same boat right now, and I’d love to not have to buy a new oven.
@@tomstathis8653 No because ours was a mess somebody had already tried to fix it unbenotes to me so it was didn't look like his easy way. I gave up and have a barbecue and a toaster oven waiting to replace it lol.
@@A2kingsfull, appreciate the response, hope your barbecue and toaster oven hold up their end of the bargain!
Thank you very much Adam
Thank you. You just saved me a repair bill.
Fix my oven because of this video. Thanks for the help. 👍🏻
Thank you got it fixed
My whirlpool would (usually) light and get to temperature, but would then fail to maintain after about 1/2 hour. I go back to check my meatloaf, or whatever, and the oven would be 190 deg. Was problem everytime.
Now Starts and maintains temp everytime.
Thanks so much!
How. Yo clear. Codf1e3. In gas stob??
.?????
.how. To clear cod. F1 e3. On kitchaid stob
,
The Otterpop was the best!
Good job!
Perfect how to fix ignite r carbon build up BUT QUESTION why didn’t you remove the oven door? It gives you a lot more room to work Release hinge locks push door down on each side that will release the hinge take door off very easy.
Thanks so much!
Like your video, my whirlpool oven lower level is working but upper one click but no flame, just like you said temperatures doesnt stay when I bake. Broiling is not working. If push the broiler head click and smell gas, what should do from here.
Hi a couple questions, is there a way to test the electrode on a DSI? Our oven one will work periodically, even tried cleaning the tip which helped. Also does it matter the distance of the electrode the burner tube? Say if the electrode is slightly bent at all or does it need to be completely straight?
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.
My neighbors Range lights and goes into preheat mode but then goes out, not sure if its the same issue you had but going to give it a try
Fav videos, thank u
Great video ! Amazon had the ignitor and this vid showed me how to replace. Internet wins again !
Hey Adam i brought and replaced the spark igniter still not working what else could it be
My ovens been down for almost a month. It won’t stay lit for more than 10 minutes. Finger crossed this gets the job done 🤞🏽
Did it work?
Helpful video, thank you! Our four month old oven just decided to not ignite on the bottom. No spark. Turns out the terminal connecting the igniter is exposed below the ceramic insulator. The extra racks that I was storing in the drawer were touching the terminal and shorting the pixies to the chassis. I'm thinking it might-could be why this happens intermittently. Filled under "good to know" I guess.
Thanks! We cleaned the ignitor and it worked. Thought we were golden. Put back together and not working. Took a few things out of the bottom drawer and reading your comment and it started right up.
Yeah….I learned the hard way….you can’t over load the lower storage bin with pots and pans
Thanks for posting ….got my stove back cooking with gas!
Thank you!!! I will try that on my son's Freind's oven he just got his own apartment, the oven doesn't work/ glow and the owner doesn't want to fix it .
Hey brother, what do I do if it is one of the top burners that will light but not stay lit after I let go of the light button?
Have the same stove and thank you for video same issue
My oven has a spiky thing next to the big tube with holes. Is that the porbe? Is it supposed to be that near?
Because it stays on as long as I keep pressing the igniters knob, as soon as I release it goes off
Sanded my igniter clean. Works great now. Thanks for posting
