As someone who is biased towards backwards compatibility, I can't help but put the first gen wii higher up on your list, respectively. The switch has its deserving credentials for it's position and the GameCube is a great console aside from it's tiny discs and low memory storage. I've never really played the older older consoles, but the SNES is very nostalgic and still a great system to this day. Just my $0.02. :)
Fully agree. If your criteria eliminates innovation then yeah, newer stuff will always win out. The SNES was a major breakthrough with an amazing catalogue. I Would go SNES/SFC, NES/FC, Wii, GC, N64 and leave out all mini replicas consoles. Virtual boy so bad it didn't even get mentioned. And yes I put Wii above GC because it was so disruptive. Sony and Microsoft competing for most powerful trying to appeal to hardcore gamers and Nintendo innovated instead by making a console anyone could play that was cheap.
@@cjlmd27 I've had a small experience with the virtual boy. It was actually kind of fun, but the overall execution was dismal at best. Ironically, we have vr decades after the virtual boys original flop, lol.

Your video made me realize I could download Killer Instinct onto the SNES classic! My dad loves that game a lot, and told me while holding his Killer Instinct SNES cartridge “When you get me a device able to play this, you will prove that you are successful.” We already had a SNES classic lying around, so when I saw this, I quickly went online and found ways to download the ROM for it.
Would have loved to see the hand-held systems in here as well. expected the gba sp and new 3ds xl to rank pretty high around game cube and wii u in the listings.

The Virtual Boy is sort of its own thing. It's equal parts console, handheld, and VR system, but I don't think it really fits very well into any of those categories.

The N64 is an interesting one for me. The cartridges were a tried and true medium that loaded up more or less instantly, but the Playstations optical discs had larger capacity and were cheaper to make, which allowed them to offer free demos in magazines, which probably helped the new kid on the block gain foothold in the industry. Sony's original dualshock had a much better analog stick, although the disc-based system was a lot less reliable from my experience back in the day.
The N64's graphics were superior to its rivals, and Nintendo basically popularised the idea of an analog stick, even though it did wear out very quickly, and the use of cartridges might have led to that dark time for Nintendo, even though they were more reliable. The Gamecube was an AMAZING console and the controller design was near perfection, but no console in the 6th generation stood a chance against the PS2 with its already huge fanbase and DVD playback, which I think popularised the DVD even though they'd been around for years. And the Xbox was winning many fans with its online shooting games. In fact I think a huge reason the PS2 and Xbox were so popular was because the PS1 popularised the idea that video games weren't just for kids, and those consoles continued on that.
Nintendo basically did their own thing from that point on rather than try to compete with them, and I think that was the best decision they ever made.

I kinda dislike when they put "64" after N64 titles like that, because it looks as if it is the 64th entry in a series.
Yeah sure, obviously that's an unrealistically big number of games in a series, but it still _"looks"_ like the name of a 64th title.
Sega genesis was my first system, and I became a huge n64 kid before moving onto Xbox and ps2. When I get the wii originally, I thought I had put Nintendo out to pasture to focus on the more powerful Microsoft and Sony systems. Well I am so glad I got a switch. Such an amazing system and gets more use than either my ps4 or Xbox one easily

@@tennheroisbae886 Exactly, the Wii for its time was better as the Switch in its time now, Wii Shop had every Console game from NES - N64, it had motion controllers which was pretty cool considering it was released in 2006, the library of Wii games could rival the selection of Switch games now, backwards combatibility to the Game Cube games, you could even have NETFLIX on your Wii,too.

I remember a gamestop employee looked out for me when I got a newer black wii. One of the bundles (I think mario kart wii) had the gamecube ports while another didnt (new super mario bros wii I believe). Bless her.
I remember when I first learned about the Wii U. I was at my friends house and he showed me his and I thought it was crazy that the controller had a separate screen. I remember getting one that Christmas and playing all the cool games like Mario maker, splatoon, and ssb4.

Meh not really. Xbox and PlayStation 1st party games rival and have surpassed Nintendo multiple times throughout the last 20 years. Nintendo has a dud for every triumph. For every switch and nunchuck, you have a Wii U and n64 controller.

The Wii u was a flop only because it was misunderstood. It was actually a very good console with good titles. And the Switch is what the Wii U should have been. It was a terrific idea. Just executed poorly. I stand by my statement

I think my problem with the Wii U is that it didn't seem like a new console. By that i mean, it was more of an upgrade to the Wii than anything else and that's supported by it being backwards compatible with pretty much every accessory to the Wii. I have a similar problem with the 3ds and 2ds(more so the 2ds).
When i saw the reveal of the Switch, it really looked like Nintendo was making the Switch and just couldn't finish it in time so they made a halfway step to it with the Wii U.
the wii u truly WAS a full fledged new console, while the 2DS was just a modified version of the 3DS. it's a completely different situation.

the order of all these rankings is just basically by release date. would have been cool to get more of a ranking about how each system placed during its particular moment in history, but it’s still cool to learn about all these different consoles

Why would you be surprised that the Wii U is #2? It’s got great games, backwards compatibility with Wii games, and fun gimmicks with the Gamepad! Yes, it wasn’t as powerful as the PS4 and Xbox One, but it’s still a really great console, and was worth getting before the Switch existed.

When my Wii broke back in 2019 I bought a WiiU because they were similar in price, and I have to say I really fell in love with the system. I still use it for stuff like VC and ofc all of my Wii games, and even got to play some classics I missed out on.

@Sensei if you rank the consoles based off graphics like it seemed Nate just did then of course the newer consoles will be higher. Ranking these consoles correctly would be by how the systems faired and compared to others at the time. So by that one would see how the original NES was a game changer and if you know gaming history its because of the NES success America even has a gaming market today. So by that logic how do you put a copy before the orignal?

When the Wii Mini was sold at the store I worked at, if you came in just wanting Mario Kart and the motion plus controller with nunchuck, it was cheaper to buy the console bundle.

Nani??? GameCube should have done better than the Wiis that weren't GC Compatable! It was just wrong to place NES Classic over the N64 & GameCube. I can understand the SNES Classic placing over N64 though. Just watch as N64 Classic comes & places 2nd only to the Switch when released.

@@kylekondit9709 The Original Wii was GC Compatable, at least as long as the disc drive works. GameCube should have done better than the later Wii Models that weren't GC Compatible.

Just so you know, emulation isn’t piracy. The tiny discs I imagine were to make it so copying the games onto an illegal disc would be harder. That’s what piracy is to my knowledge anyway.

Honestly, i feel like Nintendo should do an N64 Classic, it would probably fail horribly, but i would still like to see a mini version of the N64
This would be fantastic, but the issue is the N64 architecture is very complex - so much so that its even difficult to emulate on modern systems. I believe Nintendo have considered doing an N64 Classic, but the supply chain and production costs would not create a high profit margin.
I dont thin it would fail, the current mini-consoles are doing great, but they are doing them in order the original ones released, so we would have to wait a little more for N64. but im sure it would come eventually
tho prob. a little longer, since it was much much more powerful compared to the previous consoles. its in 3D afterall
Well, they did add an expansion pack for the nintendo online service that includes mainly N64 games.
They were emulated pretty badly though.

why. Anyone can get an official N64 easily.
