Yes, I also think that he comes across as extremely unsympathetic and represents the USA very poorly :(
the guide was great, makes me sad you didn't give him money
I can't even imagine people coming to the US and just wandering around not even speaking the language following locals lol.
Most people around the world speaks english , some less , some more than others .
But people do
It's fun, I've helped some Khazak and Thai folk get some coffee and see some sights in the general area before.
It’s probably a lot more dangerous to do that in any major US city than it is in Southeast Asia
I see foreign people wondering around that don’t speak English here in America every day bro 😂
This brings back so many memories! Me and a friend went to Myanmar almost 20 years ago now. It was just 'opening up' a little and relatively peaceful times. Traveling was very difficult. Everyone would just keep saying, "You, meaning westerners, can't go there" haha. There were no phones or banks. Lucky a friend of ours gave us some tips. Bring small denomination US currency. Everyone would take US money and it's hard to make change. We did end up finding and buying some Myanmar money in a back alley, from under a blanket of nick nacks. We ended up with a "tour guide" as well. For a whole day he drove us around in a Cushman cart thing and took us to all the temples, etc. We ate lunch somewhere he knew and we didn't spend any money all day. In the end we gave him $20 US for the day, which was more than he asked. As for the kids, we bought little matchbox like cars and stuff like that. So always had something to give them that wasn't money. I think it helped with adults too, seeing us being nice to the kids. I think he was practicing his English, during his little speech. Everyone that would talk to us would do the same thing. "HI, my name is, I have 2 Sisters, Do you like it here in my country.." So many stories! Last quick one. We too rode some bus for 20 hours to another city. It was like a movie with so many people, smells, livestock, haha. There are no bathrooms on the bus and we didn't think of bottles. So about the time I was about to pee myself I walked up to the driver and made the international sign I have to pee. He just stopped in the middle of the dirt road, said something out loud and most of the bus started getting off to pee, or more on the side of the road in the field. From then on, I was the "pee guy". When I couldn't hold it anymore I'd get up and walk to towards the door. He'd stop the bus in the middle of the road and everyone would handle business. haha. The whole trip was like being in a movie!
that reminds me of the movie Darjeeling limited. Not exactly, but how you interacted with the locals.
Nice story haha
If you had wore longyi, it's easy to pee .Just sit and do your business in sit.😅
I remember when Buses use to be like that Pee Break every 2 hours or so while going at 25mph for 300 miles trip.
I used to have car sick all the time drivers always stop for my vomitting section lol .
And you were the good tourist, I would say. I seen some American tourists "tipping" people with brand new crips 5 kyats and 10 kyats, 20 kyats currency when the exchange rate was 1$ = 1400ks and a cup of instant coffee was 300kyats. I don't even know where they found those small notes lol
I seen it like 3-4 times. Always crack me up cuz you don't need to "tip" for usual services in Myanmar nor expect to do so. For tour guides and drivers , ofcourse they expect to get paid better and industry relied on it.
What a wonderful time to be alive
give the guy a little tip bro, he's fine compared to other people out there. it's not that he's scamming you.. he's hungry that's for sure. i even clicked on this video because of him.
Yeah he's the reason I clicked too. Doesn't he earn something for carrying your traffic?
Facts. I hope he at least gave him something
For real. Small Brain is so cheap.
dude same
Dude straight up used him for content and made money off this video, but couldn't spare a few bucks for Michael
Interesting that you are asking for donations yet refuse to part with any money to your guide.... He was polite and probably prevented you from being hustled by other locals..... Why do you feel scammed by someone asking for what is probably only a meagre amount of money for his time spent seeing to your needs?
And he makes a ton of $ on his channel
Good point. Lots of times in our part of the world we we tip even when quite UNDESERVED - it's 90% self-serve - you line up, wait, order, pay, wait, pick up. There's no smile, no care, just entitlement. Yet, up comes the tip option guilting you into obliged tip.
Kind of a dh move. When you go to these countries, don't expect someone to just spend a whole day with you for free. A little bit to us goes a long way for them.
very true
Except he wasn't upfront about it.
I hope you at least treat him to some food, dude walked with you for the whole day
Did you?
he could, but also he dent have to. as the guy from the same country. it is much better to do for kindness than expecting to receive smthing. imo most Myanmar ppl do it for kindness and bc they want to show foreigners around the country without expecting anything.
He offered him food and he said he is full
I went to Myanmar in 1995. The country opened up in December 1994 to foreign independent travellers. The only building where I could phone home was the Strand Hotel. There was no internet, mobile phones and just state tv, though BBC was available. I was looked at in disbelief. People touched my skin. The sights still look familiar, but I was being watched. The standard of english was incredibly high as they were desperate for overseas influence. I saw Aun Sang Su Chi, but later formed my own opinion. British made buses plied the streets all brightly coloured and you could take a bottle of whisky and sell it at the market to pay for a month there.
I was 30 years old, white and female from Australia, travelling alone.
very brave
I bet I could listen to your travel stories for hours and not a minute would be boring. Did you actually publish some kind of travel report with photos? Could be suuuper interesting to see it from a tourists eyes around that time. I was 6 in 1995 btw haha
You saw Chi? How? And what did you think of her?

Another great video. A wonderful companion, Michael. And Yangon is my favorite city of all, Alexandria, Egypt a distant second. As far as betel nut goes, years ago on all the buses there were plastic bags in front of you to spit in. On second class busses you just spit out the window. The boat to Sittwe was covered on the sides with the nice juice stains. The Thais used to chew but now they’re ‘civilized’. You have reenergized me into seeing Yangon soon. Baobabed Lodge, below Sule Pagoda, SE, is a good hotel. $20 if you pay in Kyat, $30 in USD, including all you can eat breakfast buffet. Money change at the airport is a ripoff so change a $20 to get into town. Taxi fare from there or the bus station is 20000 kyat but I’ve done it a couple of times for 15000, 2500 kyat to the USD mid 2023 at the money changer in town. Change at any of the numerous money changers above Sule, East-West streets. They’re legit, unlike in the Bogyoke market years ago. No possibility to sell your kyat at the airport. Years ago the largest bill was equal to USD $1, so you’d have a stack of a hundred from $100. Myanmar ain’t cheap for hotels, though in Kalaw, à wonderful place despite the advent of motorcycles, one can have a room for $10ish, breakfast included. The one “benefit” of the military dictatorship is motorcycles are prohibited in Yangon. Apparently, this is due to once a wife of a military honcho being killed by a motorcyclist there. After Vietnam, a blessing Thanks again for the video.

Bruh, I hope you have him a little $ at least.... yeah I get that it sort of feels 'scammy' but it's cause your small amount of $ can mean a huge amount to them. Westerners (I myself am one ...) gotta get over that feeling and shell out a few $ (not a huge amount....and as long as it's in your budget, of course) and just be happy with life.
The thing is that it's likely gonna be the 'good' / subtle "scammers" that get more from you by pretending they don't want anything (cause they learn what works with foreigners ....) . End of the day just lose the ego a bit which is what's causing you not to get "scammed" (for like $5-10$)..

I just recently found your channel and have been catching up on your videos here and there over this horrifically drab weekend..fun to watch and I do hope you do more..that said..did you really not expect michael to ask you for money? 😂..I honestly felt like he was rather pleasant about it, most are not so kind and most definitely wouldn’t spend a penny of their own on you without asking for repayment immediately. To look like a walking scam target is one thing (not much you can do there boss, they’re gonna assume you have money any way you go about life in these places)..but to shun a dude for asking for a couple bucks (the guy would have probably been happy with a $5-10 for flips sake) when he didn’t really do you any worse than any other dude who jumps on obvious tourists..dunno 🤔.
Not that he was a sweetheart or anything, pretty obvious that he was trying to do what he could for his local friends and business owners on the dollars that he definitely thought you had..just gotta be more aware of that sort of thing, they’re out for themselves and their own long before a random tourist from a western country. Be trusting sure, but don’t knock people for doing the obvious in the end like it’s a bad thing 😂. This has been the experience of the traveling western white dude for the past 60 years.
yeah this guy is pretty cheap throughout his entire videos always penny pinching the locas
Not a scam, its the arrangement, he was a stranger, you need help from him, compensation is a thing, not sure its so sinister as much as fact of life. If it becomes too much say no,but don't take it personal or think its scam. You should know what it is when you step onto the land
