    Games on Wii U at 480p look a little washed out compared to 480p on Wii. However, 1080p on Wii U is definitely a little cleaner than 480p on the Wii...in my eyes :)

    There is a bit of a bizarre chroma key issue on Wii backwards compat for Wii U, greens are a couple pixels out of sync, which looks rather nasty at 1080p. The Wii itself has 4:2:2 colour though so it was never going to look amazing to begin with I suppose.

    thank you for making this comparison video!! vwii is indeed very looks bad at 480p.
    after watching this, i tried running vwii at 1080p and force the aspect ratio on usbgx loader setting to 4:3.
    thankfully i hooked up my wiiu on a pc crt monitor, so i can change the geometry and filled up the screen to a near perfect square 4:3 aspect ratio.
    the only problem that i have right now is for the wiiware games, my understanding those cannot be launched through usbgx, and at 1080p, it gave me a pillar box at the left and right of the screen. so in order to get those running in fullscreen, i need to switching back the res to 480p in wiiu main setting, or set the res to 480i and upscale it using my retrotink2x

    I heard a lot of people saying if you set your Wii U’s resolution to 480p, Wii games will display a lot better. I tried but in my monitor it doesn’t make any difference.
    The problem is Mario Kart Wii looks pretty alright but Mario Strikers looks awful. Don’t know why.

    • @vittosphonecollection57289
      @vittosphonecollection57289 Před 2 lety +1

      Probably Mario Strikers looks this bad because the animations take a lot of memory and it's all in 60fps.

    Great comparison video!
    What I noticed when I made a direct comparison at home: Wii games sound much more powerful than on the original analog Wii thanks to the digital sound transmission through the Wii U. In particular, Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxy sound phenomenal on the Wii U.

  • @vdentertaiment4088
    @vdentertaiment4088 Před 2 lety +11

    Had a itch to try and see if the ouput of Wii U was fixed for Wii and GC games and it seems like not a lot of progress was made.
    There is still some confusion surrounding the GC/Wii output and many aren't sure how much worse is it than on the original hardware.
    Sadly the Wii U is not really great at displaying GC and Wii games and it gets pretty messy.
    The Issue seems to be that when set to 720p and 1080p, the console outputs BT.601 colorspace inside a BT.709 container. Rather than the system doing a conversion as it should. So colors look off and are less accurate than they should. Most obviously the reds. You can get around this in 720p and 1080p mode by setting some TV's have a color space conversion option somewhere in a hidden menu. So you could fix it that way. However, there are still issues inherent to the 720p and 1080p modes, that can't be overcome. They apply a sharpening filter and it simply doesn't look so good. So I would not recommend playing these games with the 720p/1080p output, even though I know that setting the system to 480p is annoying and slow.
    480p outputs the colorspace correctly and doesn't apply any sharpening. So it's almost good but there is still one problem that needs to be resolved and that's the bad chroma sampling, which makes colorful edges look more aliased than they should. Chroma samples are offset so that it almost appears as if some edges have a chromatic aberration effect. These last two issues also apply to the 720p and 1080p modes.
    If someone finds a way to fix them then the Wii U could, in theory, be just as good of a solution for playing Wii and GC games as on native hardware for now, it seems less than perfect but setting it to 480p seems like the optimal thing to do for now.
    TLDR: Set it to 480p and hope that someone finds a solution to fixing the chroma issues so that the output can be ideal.

    • @femto8402
      @femto8402 Před 2 lety +1

      Chroma is weird, with nintendont all my games have a green line around edges. But not on Wii games for some reason. But the worst with nintendont is the aspect ratio in 720p/1080p, the image is a bit squashed, at 480p the aspect ratio is good, but the image on the gamepad is still squashed of course. And like in this video the Gamma is wrong, the image is a bit washed out.

      You also have to keep in mind how the Wii footage was obtained. I have the Mayflash adapter and one of the cheap ones. The cheap one makes the color look darker and more contrasty which to the untrained eye might look better. Do remember the Wii U outputs a digital signal at limited range. That's it then. The definitive way to play Wii games, is NOT the Nintendo Wii, but The Nintendo Wii U (that is, not considering emulation. With an emulator, of course the upscaling is much much better, given you have a proper host system, I mean a good specs PC, cuz emulators can AND do output Wii games to 4K resolution which is a massive upgrade for some Wii games from their natural intended hardware).
