I saw this story on Reddit Brew. I don't understand how some grown ups out there can be so immature. My uncle is a bit of an immature man child and he was nowhere near this bad. He would even call off these people for being immature jerks!! Heck, even most of his previous dogs were more mature than this!! These people need some severe psychiatric help!!
Story 2 about the pizza delivery driver: take video of the ex-boss harassing you, pounding on your door. Heck, it would be good to have video of how he acted in the store, too, especially in front of customers. Then give that video to the pizza chain. Bet he looses his franchise!

OP should tell his old boss to be a man and stop throwing a temper tantrum at his door step. If that front door episode was an attempt to beg for him to come back to work, I'd say the boss failed miserably.

First story: I remember doing pranks like that… in college… with my friends… when everyone was fine with it. Not at a family gathering to someone who didn’t enjoy it. Little pranks are ok IF THE PERSON BEING PRANKED IS OK WITH IT. If not, it’s just straight up bullying. You’re right, this whole family is infested with toxic bullies.

@@Nyax50Lopez Asking to pull pranks beforehand ruins the prank itself. Keep it small and respectful (like a trail of riddles on post it notes that lead to a silly picture) and make sure it's easily fixed (no glitter bombs but rubber duckies is silly....see James Veitch)

I think the lesson to take away from that first story is that the brother-in-law has fundamentally corrupted the family. OP‘s chair had been the subject of a prank for too long, most likely exacerbated by the brother-in-law, and his rage fit of breaking a window when he couldn’t continue his pranks kind of proves that. And now, the family has become so reliant on pranks being the only way for people to have fun then it has resulted in nobody having a good time anymore since there isn’t a single common punching bag. The family just never learned to get along in any way.
I don't know what's so attractive about drunken abusers with rage issues.

In the first story, I think it’s funny how the the BIL and other family members were annoyed that OP would take things “so far over a chair” when, in reality, OP was the only one being an adult, establishing healthy boundaries, and was simply asking for a little respect from his family members. And in the end, it was the BIL who took things too far!!!

Toxic people and toxic systems (including toxic families) freak out when one of the targets of their toxicity starts to make boundaries. The pushback from the buttholes is often harsh and out of proportion to the event. The toxic persons and the flying monkeys get furious when they start figuring out that one of their targets is no longer willing to go along with their games.
I have to say it is a wonderful thing to behold, and to hear about on videos like this one, when a target finally escapes the toxic morass of the bullies and their enablers. It's one of the reasons I enjoy this channel so much.
Story 1: Does anyone else feel like what was totally typical behaviour (taking a vacated seat, moving around a family gathering) in many families slowly became a vicious opportunity for bullying when the brother in law realized how difficult and upsetting it was for OP to adapt when his chair was taken? Like brother in law saw him getting upset when someone unintentionally took his seat and then turned it into a targeted attack that the family jumped in on? So weird.
Sounds possible. At some point it became a show of the lack of respect the family had for OP. A joke is only a joke if everyone is laughing.
Idk, maybe at first, but the reasonable response would be for the family to recognize it was important to him and do their best to respect it. It had been going on for years they could have just as easily bought a few cheap chairs at some yard sales and solved the problem permanently instead of turning it into a game because they think stressing someone repeatedly without fail is funny. Not to mention the attempt at gaslighting at the end is a telling cherry on top.

Nah, something seems off or missing from this story. OP just sounds like the entitled one here. Who the hell gets this upset over a spot to sit? Unless the spots were arranged, no one has ownership or is entitled to any specific spot. If OP has struggles "adapting" they are the one that needs the therapy as there is something weird about being that possessive about seating. It isn't right for the family to mess with the personal chair they brought, I agree with that part, but everything else just makes OP sound like a spoiled baby.
That's what bullies do. They poke around until they get a response and bingo, now they have one of their victim's weaknesses to exploit.
The fact that the BIL stopped, and stayed out of fights after a certain point deserves some props. Any kind of growth in the right direction is good growth, and it's pretty nice that the rest of the family learned to put their foot down, too. It's kind of a shame that they're struggling to find entertainment afterwards, because there's so much that can be done for entertainment that doesn't involve fucking with each other: party games, board games, movies, music, karaoke, etc.
Or TALKING! Most adults can entertain themselves by talking without having to destroy each other's property or mess with each other's heads!

Story 1: This isn't about the chair, this is about the OP being the scapegoat of the family and getting tired of being treated poorly. Also, I suspect the BIL has some emotional or drinking problems.
I think you’re right seeing how it was mentioned in the story that he drank himself to sleep the night he threw the chair through the window.
The last story: If only the boss treated his employees like they were as valuable as he said after they quit. If he just treated them like human beings and give them a couple more bucks an hour I'm sure he wouldn't be worried about his family becoming homeless and beating down doors. I also noticed he referred to them as kids that need to grow up. So says the man acting like a child. Im sure he thought because they were young they could be easily replaced but those "kids" obviously knew their worth and rightfully didn't put up with it.
I once had a moment where I was making minimum wage and got to stand up to my boss. I knew I risked losing my job over it but I didn't care at that point. I was shocked that my boss ended up increasing my pay by $2 an hr. It was more than anyone was making there at the time and I was only 14! I was quite proud of myself that day. And I'm glad OP didn't let his boss walk all over him either.
If he sees his ex-employees as kids and treats them that way… I feel bad for his actual kids :/
This scenario is continually repeated, overwhelming employees with increased workloads without increased compensation. Cutting staff or not replacing those who quit will eventually overwhelm the existing staff and quality will be effected. It's clear that the owner felt entitled to disrespect his staff, and 2 years ago a lot of workers would have taken it happy to have a job. Thankfully American workers are demanding respect for their hard work or saying f**k it, I'm only doing what's in my job description during my assigned hours. If you want your employees to go the extra mile there needs to be an incentive, and it doesn't necessarily need to be monetary, sincere appreciation goes a long way.
I genuinely think we are headed for a collapse. Our job market is built on the average joe being desperate enough to take this kind of flak and it's how a good chunk of business owners operate. These kinds of owners are going bankrupt, a long with redundant stores and restaurants that were oversaturating an area. There won't be enough jobs at a reasonable skill level soon to support the lower class and we're gonna see mass homelessness in the next few decades. Our government has made it clear that they won't supplement the money saved with automation via universal income so eventually we'll just all be jobless watching robots do everything, and shamed by the 1% for not being of use to them anymore.
Imagine being nice and pay nicely then suddenly your worker are hardworking.
@@NEPAAlchey It is more than that. Automation has replaced ever so many jobs and will replace ever so many more. The only logical and sensible answer is a UBI - Universal Basic Income. Everyone gets enough to live on and if they want more they can go do the jobs still needed. With people no longer having to work to live, the amount of different jobs that will be created (the arts, entertainment, community projects, social things, welfare ...) will result in another Renaissance.

The only thing that could have made the last story better is that while the boss is talking to the cops and he’s watching from the porch, he gets pizza from a rival chain delivered and proceeds to eat it in front of everyone on the porch.
Most Bosses: "Employees had to leave. I'd best replace them with new hires to keep up with demand and protect my business and livelihood."
This Doofus: "Look how much money I get to keep for myself! I'll just have each employee do the work of five people! No way can this possibly backfire!"
Lol, that first story. How much drama was caused over a single goddamn chair. But the fact that it escalated to the BIL throwing said chair through the window makes it clear these people have the emotional maturity of schoolchildren. Seriously, some of them are acting like school bullies over this whole thing. That BIL sounds like he needs to talk to a professional and get proper help.
My mom works in a special school for kids that have a history of doing things like throwing chairs in class. You pretty much ride the short bus going there.

Last Story: Every time I see one of those signs that says “closed due to lack of staff” (bonus points if it bemoans how “lazy this generation is”) I assume that a manager similar to this is behind it.
Maybe not up to harassing people that have quit, but the other stuff about bad management, awful pay, and treating employees like they’re not even people? Yeah, that’s absolutely what I assume is behind those signs.
Never in my life have i seen a sign on a business door claiming theyre closed because the generation theyre trying to sell food to is lazy. Businesses and shitty bosses *usually* at least try to appear professional to customers. Or at least not outwardly insult them en masse.

I saw a sign like that on the Pizza Ranch location near my favorite shopping mall. I came to almost exactly the same conclusion as others here, that the management of that location didn't view their employees as human beings worthy of respect. After all, if they're trash talking their former employees in a sign on the door, it's a pretty sure bet the managers weren't treating those employees any better when they still worked there.
Definitely; a person quitting, now that may be for personal/petty reasons like laziness or incompetence on their part, it possible, there are other reasons, like a better job offer somewhere else, but it's a possibility.
But a mass exodus of staff, putting the business below functional thresholds and an inability to hire enough replacements? That can only be problems with the higher ups.
I'm old and disgruntled enough to know a bad job when I'm at one. Was a professional mechanic for a lot of years. Out of the industry now, due to health reasons. One shop I worked at I quit after a week. Owner was less than pleased to say the least. I'm not usually one to quit a job that quickly, or at all honestly. What's funny is that the tow truck driver who picked up my toolbox was the same one who dropped it off in the first place. Was not surprised at all. Apparently I wasn't the first guy to have done that at that business.
The food industry can be a little different. Location is everything too. The OP comments that nobody is tipping any more and connects this with the delay in service. I have to disagree. As a customer, if you got burned on a delivery you make a note of it. Happens again, you stop getting delivery. It doesn't take too long before nobody is doing delivery.
What you have in this case is a group of people who can't be bothered to get their own food, switch to door dash for their deliveries thinking it will be quicker. But here is the thing. I can almost guarantee that this company is using the Self Delivery option for Door Dash business. This is where Door Dash processes the orders but the company has to do their own deliveries. So even when people are ordering through door dash, they don't realize they are just paying more for the same crappy delivery. And once you add in the fees from Door Dash, you probably paid double what you would have for that extra large pie. So of course people stop tipping. They are already paying to much for the food delivery, it is heavily delayed, and people like the convenience of paying with a card (nobody carries cash anymore) and probably think the tip is in the excessive fees they were charged already for a hour long delayed delivery.
Then of course there are the idiots. I gave my stepson $25 for dinner. He order pizza for delivery. It was just himself. He comes back to me after ordering and asked for some more money. That the total came to $26 and change. And this didn't even cover the tip for the driver. I looked at him like he had three heads. This knucklehead ordered enough food for four people for himself and then wanted more money to cover the difference and a tip for the driver. But I digress.
Getting back to the owner, had this guy had a clue, he would have suspended deliveries, focused on in store or pickup only and cancelled the Door Dash that was eating him alive in service fees while holding his money each week. Think about it. If 30% of his customers are ordering through Door Dash, that is 30% of his revenue that he has to wait a week to get to deposit. Plus he is losing at a minimum 20% of that revenue (if not more) to Door Dash fees and services.
First story. If that is how they treat their own family members, how horrible do they treat perfect strangers or their peers or coworkers?
This is why we as a society should allow kids who are being bullied to stand up for themselves instead of punishing them more.

Story 1: I don't think having pranks at family functions is bad, but it sounds like OP's entire family made every single gathering about messing with people. A pranking system that would make sense would be if the party host gets a list of people who want to be involved in pranks before each party, selects one or two small groups to set up the pranks, and have them only affect some/all of the people who chose to participate. that way, everyone gets to laugh, make memories, and bond together. but what OP's family was doing was just straight up insane
Thing is with pranksters they tend to take things too far. And as OP stated in his final update, they still did pranks after learning not to mess him and it only stopped after a glitter bomb messed up a person's carpet and the prankster had to pay for the cleaning bill.
I LOVE your opt-in idea. Some people are just NOT into pranks. And it's only fun if the prankee is laughing, too.
I think having a prank-fest, with hard boundaries, and strictly opt-in, and you NEVER mess with anyone who is not on the list, is a great idea!
Maybe even have some judges to assign points. "Five points for being funny, but minus three for the mess." That will help train them to have more creative, and less destructive, pranks,

Another issue I have is that with the seat prank, only OP is being targeted, hence the drama with the chair. Even for group pranks, is there any reason to prank just one person for kicks and giggles? Either the pranked person smartens up, or the rest of the group gets tired of pranking the exact same target. I am very certain the BIL has a grudge against OP for the constant targeting.
When I was 16 I worked for a fast food place that had drive-thru, walk-up and dining room service. On my third day the boss started yelling at me, in front of customers, because I asked where an order was supposed to go. I quit on the spot. He grabbed me by the shirt collar, screamed in my face and shoved me. I left and was embarrassed to go home, but one of the customers he did this in front of knew me and called my mother. I wasn't there when she stormed the place but the stories I've heard from co-workers are pretty epic. Apparently he ended up crying because she told him she was filing charges against him for assaulting a minor and was going to sue him and the restaurant chain. I worked three days...got one paycheck...it was for 100 hours. Several months later I found out the restaurant owners had given him the choice of "making it right" or firing him and that was why I got the big check. For those wondering, minimum wage was $3.25 per hour and I got a whopping $325.
Chair story: When I was young, IDK if my mom did it on purpose because I was the youngest, but whenever she hosted a party we were always a chair short. Because I was the youngest I was always made to sit on the floor so the olders could have a seat. Even my cousin who was only a year older than me got to have a chair. I guess I should be thankful I had a chair for dinner. What a miracle.
My mother was a girl scout leader. Her little power trip trick was to buy only enough craft supplies for herself and the other girls. I was almost always left sitting there embarassed and idle. One day, one of the girls said sadly, "I feel sorry for you" and another stated flatly "Your mother's a bitch." Yeah mom, they were on to you. Everybody was.

I love good family pranks. An example of a good prank: hiding a stuffed duck in each other's house. Hiding the same picture in each other's houses. Basically don't mess with something that matters or scares the hell out of each other.
Agreed and to also be understanding of the person you want to prank if they tell you to stop. Be respectful of people’s boundaries and know when too far is in fact too far. Pranks and jokes are healthy as long as everyone is having fun, including the person being pranked.

Family musical chairs story: See how the village tears itself apart after their scapegoat is gone? That's what OP was, a scapegoat. An innocent victim to bully and blame when everyone else was lacking the stimulation they wanted. Sounds like that family is having way too many get-togethers with far too few events or activities to justify them.
Crazy pizza boss story: If someone comes banging on your door that you don't want there, tell them you will call the police if they continue. Then make good on that if they don't stop and call the non-emergency line. OP should get a restraining order against that man too, he is clearly unhinged and knows OP's address. In fact, gather all the employees he has harassed and ALL get restraining orders against the man. Maybe a judge hitting him over the head a few times can knock some sense into the man's skull. Plus, it will put a damper on his desire to start frivolous lawsuits.

For the first story, in my personal opinion, the 'prank' would've been a whole lot better if it was ONE time, at Christmas, and then OP opened a really fancy folding chair from the person sitting in his prior spot.

2nd story: it's totally true that the biggest pizza chains pay drivers less than $2 per delivery. Gas costs went WAY up and the gas pay to drivers did not go up at all. When you don't tip, your driver is losing money.
I currently deliver pizzas. My store gives us 6% commission on delivers. I walk away each night with $80-120 not including hourly pay. Not bad but I just had an interview for a more solid job.
Some delivery places started upping the delivery fee to $10. That is paid to the store not the driver.
In France, that's a non issue actually, since your employer is required to pay you back the gas. ... well so long as your employer isn't called Uber
@@Muriuki34 some places do it differently where they are paid per mile driven, so that covers it but doesn't help much for wear and tear on your vehicle, oil changes, going through tires faster, etc. Other employers pay drivers a flat rate per delivery you take and call it gas pay but it doesn't cover all your gas depending on your delivery radius. They raise delivery fees customers pay but don't raise the gas pay for drivers.

Updates do sometimes seem random, so it probably isn't reliable to be able to have it be a weekly thing.

For the second story, I'm glad OP finally got that epiphany. It's something you don't understand until you get some experience and you've had enough, which is basically "your job is not the only one you can do, there's more out there that are a lot better. Go for it!".

First story: I've had my share of barbecues and family get togethers and the biggest question in a normal, functional family is "are there enough chairs for everyone?" Even some of the invitations usually say "bring food, drinks, and chairs for communal use."
And us little kids? We could sit in an empty chair, but if an elder of the family was coming around "here you go grandma! I'm gonna get a drink, you can have my seat!"
This is just a family of failures who like to pick on their own family members. Probably other people, too.
Story 1: All it took was a few people going a little too far for all this chaos to ensue. At least the pranking pretty much stopped.

Sometimes you need to go to far for something to change as sad as it may seem. I'm almost ready to take things too far to get my cousin to quite messing with me. The guys got anxiety and has certain triggers that will have him seem like he'll start crying any moment. But when that's not the case he'll act like he's right and keeps messing with me by slapping by butt, make kissy faces at me, or various other things that invade my personal space. I've told him to stop and one time I told him if he didn't I'll deck him last warning. Family said I'm taking it too far with that but this shits been going on for years and I'm just done. At this point I'm thinking of using a trigger which even I think is a-holeish but I just want this done with and if he insists I'll play ball.
My sister's girls used to get "shooed" out of my seat every single time I would have to get up while visiting them. My sis thought it was hilarious, I just found it annoying as hell. My nieces and I still get a laugh out of it forty years later. They used to grab my drink and drink out of it too. Ugh. My sis did NOT believe in teaching boundaries.
As someone who comes from a large Latin family who loves large parties, we don’t do pranks. We talk to each other, gossip, catch up, kids play in the back yard or watch movies or play video games, the men usually drink and watch football cause they enjoy doing so and it’s really fun and lovely to be a part of. Like rSlash said, if you need pranks to make a family event fun, firstly your family is boring and dull and secondly, the whole family is childish and immature. Pranks are not necessary for a fun experience. I’m glad OPs family is learning that albeit the hard way.
The chair thing breaks my heart because when I was younger, my parents and brothers used to make fun of me for 'moaning' every time I needed something or didn't agree with something. They thought it was funny because it would get a rise out of me, but nobody else was ever branded a 'moaner' and my input was often just completely ignored because I was 'moaning'.
Now, twenty years down the line, I don't tell my parents or brothers any of my personal problems and choose not to get involved in making any family decisions.
They don't accuse me of 'moaning' now, but that decade or so of their little running joke got me to the point where I find it so difficult to stand up for myself or make decisions because the back of my mind tells me I'm just 'moaning'.
Wow. First OP needs his entire family to get some therapy to understand boundaries and to find a healthy way to fight boredom because clearly their pranks aren't fun for everyone if the rest of them aren't finding it funny when they are on the receiving end.

My family had a rule when we were kids that we would say, "spot back," as we got up from our seat and that meant nobody could take it. But we were just kids and when we grew up we didn't need to keep saying it. The family from the first story needs to implement it.
Story 2: Sounds like you're quitting a bad boss. No great loss to you. Someone does something like showing up at my door, I'd tell them to leave and close the door. If they don't take the hint, call the police to have him trespassed off the property (which, you can do as a tenant).

It's super common for these people who never really had to do anything and just had the business run itself to be like that, I've had the unfortunate displeasure of having worked at such a place a couple of times in the far past. People with huge egos who think that they are something for having the business (who is usually managed by someone else) and you're trash for just being an employee. Their power over your financial life means that they can threat you like trash, the world is full of such people... I honestly hope that there is a nice place in hell for all of them.

The first story was amazing. OP got what he needed, and that was great. The farting stuff had me howling to the point where I was crying. The dedication to eat foods to fast out nasty smells is superb. No one else seems to have picked up on this. It must be English people who still find farts amazing when they're adults.

I had a housemate (It was my place and he rented a room from me) who quit his job. His boss showed up at MY house and demanded to speak to his former employee. He wasn't home so I told his ex-boss that. Apparently, his boss didn't believe me and wanted to come into MY house and search it. I told him no, and he got all offended. I then told him I don't care about you or your freaking problems. He threated to call the cops on me for refusing to let him search MY house. I laughed at him and said go ahead. I will be here and slammed the door in his face. Nothing happened. I understand why my housemate quit that job if he treated a stranger in his own house like that, I can imagine how he would treat an employee.

Many years ago I worked in a pub, and when my shift ended I liked to sit on a stool at the bar, and have a beer or two.
But the supply of stools was limited. So, I bought a stool. It was mine, not the pubs. When I was working it was in the back room, next to the glass washers. At the end of my shift I got it out, and sat on it,
Everyone knew it was my stool. No one ever used it apart from me. Just like no one borrows a car without permission.
One day a self important new staff member decided to use MY stool. Buy your own furniture lady. She stood up to adjust her dress, and I removed it from under her. She then sat back down. On the floor. Bar stools are about 3 feet tall. It was a long way down. she was amply padded for the landing. My stool. Belongs to me. I do not drink the drinks you pay for, you do not sit on the stool I paid for.
One of the customers simply said to her ‘it is his stool.’
I still have it. When I quit the job at the pub I took it with me.

Story 1: I think that could have been the origin story of that crotchety old man in Christmas movies with no movie. Whether OP or the brother in law is that old man, it just goes to show how something so small can divide a group. It shows that pride and ego can be so toxic if left unchecked. You would think that the chair throw the window would be the end of that, but I guess it was a lot of egos in the fam for the message to get through. The fact that they couldn't find anything else to do for fun besides pranking each other means that they must not have very good relationships with each other. I worked for one of the large pizza chains for ten years as well, pretty sure the same one as OP because yup everything lines up with what happened to me. Our delivery fee was $4, but the driver gets $1.50 to pay for the mileage and the absolute lowest wage they can legally pay. And the staffing, the thing is, there's always applicants to hire for delivery jobs. I know this because I was the general manager, it was my district manager that wouldn't allow us to have more than two drivers on a Friday or Saturday (busiest days by far) because "Labor costs are too high" but then at the same time, yell at us because our service was slow. If you're getting 6+ deliveres an hour to opposite ends of the city and the two already exhausted drivers aren't allowed to take more than two deliveries at a time, how the absolute hell do you expect the stores average delivery time to be less than 25 minutes??? I can't tell you how many times I'd have absolutely disgusting disrespectful messages from him about how horrible I was because I dared to staff more than what he said. Before I quit I got that store to a 5 star rating, three months later it's a 2 star now and not climbing 😊

First story, the guy flips out over OP bringing his own chair because the pricks kept stealing the seats for "grins and giggles" with no intention of returning them. Talk about MAJOR immaturity. I find pranking at family gathering events to be flat out stupid.
I stopped attending Thanksgiving dinners at one of my aunt's houses for some time because my dumbass cousin and a few other family members thought it was funny to pelt someone in the head with a football. They did that to a few kids and claimed that "it was an accident" when the parents came out upon hearing their kids crying. Then they went back to doing it again until they decided to target me and they hit me hard with it. I got pissed at one point because I was in the middle of playing hide-and-seek with the kids when I took a hit to the face with a football. I took the ball, walked over to the tree stump, took out my knife, and I was about to pop it when my cousin ran over and snatched the ball from me. He and the others kept telling me to "chill out" and that it was only fun. I went inside to say bye to my aunt and a few others and I also added I wasn't coming back over anymore. They saw the welts on me and were shocked (even more when I said I wasn't coming back anymore) and wanted to know what happened and so I told them.
I left but I learned from my dad that my dumbass cousin and the others got their asses chewed out big time over what they did and a big argument broke out.
I didn't show back up to my aunt's for the next few years, even though I was asked to go and I refused when I learned that my cousin and the dumbass relatives would be there too. I did eventually return but that was after the cousin and the others stopped showing up for good.
Never seen a manager of a pizza store rage so hard like that and it’s hilarious how he literally went onto Ops lawn and tried to force him to be a man and to “get back to work” and he literally fired Op. 😂

Story2: My brother worked at a pizza hut for a few years. Manager was absolutely awful. No delivery drivers existed during that time. Eventually they got new manager and got at least one delivery person. Yeah, the "no one wants to work" whine. No, people are willing to work, they just don't want to work to 1/4 of a living wage while having to do the job of multiple other people (for which they are not financially compensated) & treated like garbage. No benefits, no PTO, and the pay may not even cover gas to get to and from work. They don't want to work for YOU. (This said to the companies and bosses who treat employees worse than draft animals). This owner sounds a lot like the manager that used to be at my brother's job. He actually screamed "fuck the customers" in front of customers. Shouting at employees (particularly in front of customers) is against most corporate policies. Can we say hostile work environment? Good for OP! At another place my brother worked, a shelf area was full of spiders and the manager ordered an employee to clean it up. He said he wasn't going near the spiders & they needed to get pest control in there (he's allergic to bug bites). She screamed at him to just effing do it or he was fired. He held up two fingers, said "Deuces" and walked out. The boss also reminds me of the Walmart manager who had over 20 employees quit on her the same day because of her unprofessional behavior and verbal abuse. They got their paychecks and all walked out. We're in an "at will" state so they didn't have to give any notice.

the last story reminded me of why I quit my last fast food job after being with the company for 4 years. It might not sound a lot but for a fast food with crappy management, that's a lot. I'm just a simple minded person back then. I just worked because I just wanted money on my pocket but thanks to shitty company management and other bs, I found myself being dragged up the ranks (not climbing, but being dragged up). Before I knew it, I was already the one in-charged of training every single employee that finishes the hiring process. Then covid hits and we barely earn anything for our job. Meanwhile the general manager always rants about "Being thankful for having a job in this trying times" while telling us to do work twice or in my case, three times our agreed workload because not only I have to single handedly man the grill, kitchen and handle the stocks, I also need to do everything even during busy hours.
Then one fateful day, there was a typhoon and I was the only employee who isn't a cashier that managed to get to work because everyone else didn't make it to wide spread flooding so I and another junior manager (who by the way is pregnant) had to open the store up and run everything. Due to my manager being pregnant for 6 months and me not wanting to strain her, I basically took over everything and just have her man the cash register and try to keep tabs on anyone who can somehow go to work while I do everything. That's how much authority I had in that company at one point. I was just an employee but I can order the newer manager around like that. There was no way the two of us can handle everything specially with a typhoon and massive flooding around.
A quick side note, the town where I live can be called a weird one. Whenever there is flooding and storms, people would usually flock into fast foods and other places that can serve anything edible and ready to eat. Most people don't have fridges and do shopping for perishable food at the local supermarket or wet market on a daily basis.
With that in mind, you can see how 2 people manning a fast food in this kind of situation would definitely end in disaster. And it did. Orders easily got backed up, costumers are angry and barely anything was served on time because I was busy grilling stuff on the grilling station while cooking other stuff that isn't grilled like rice in the kitchen which is about 5 meters from the grilling area. It's not seem that far but if you are running around like headless chicken, that's shit is too far of a distance to cover several times a minute.
What did I get as a reward for this hard work? Well, I got chewed up by the general manager in front of 20 costumers (the maximum number of costumers we are allowed to let inside at any given point) because "We are buried under a pile of orders" which is actually correct since we were backed up so far by so many orders since most costumers we were getting were ordering for their entire family.
It was a long 10 hour shift of working non-stop and only having a measly 15 minute break to shove some meal into my mouth. I was exhausted and during most of the day, I was being chewed for "being slow". Two more employees did show up but one had to go do the deliveries and one had to man the floor and take care of costumers while the general manager was finally free to go inside the Kitchen and chew me ever further for the rest of the day. The next day, I gave my 30 days notice and told them nothing they say can make me change my mind.
I only needed to tell my brother once that if he touches my stuff without my permission, I will break his legs. He is an abusing, gaslighting narcissist who made me who I am. I call it the maximum force response. These people get you in many small steps, pushing the line back and back until they own your life.
Today he abuses his girlfriends (Yes, both of them, 28 and 17 years old. He feels entitled to a harem) and knows perfectly well that I will go to jail for life over a bent spoon and him in permanent vacation in the dirt.
It doesn't matter what it is. Be it a 5000 dollar car, a 50 dollar chair or a 5 cent plastic spoon. IT IS MINE. They are attacking the idea that I own something, that I make the rules and not them when it comes to this item.
If someone pulls shit like this, just ghost them. The fact that they need to be told that it is wrong is already to much, beyond saving. They are a time bomb if they don't know this before meeting you. Cut them out of your life ASAP.
Story 2: I feel bad for people who have to deal with these bosses. People shouldn't work for egotistical bosses who have an embarrassing amount of immaturity.

It constantly amazes me that we do not have requirements for managing other people. If you wish to employ or manage others then you should have to be qualified - the more people the higher your qualifications need to be. Employing even one person should require passing a certificate course that covers all the necessary things - just having the money to employ someone should not be enough. I did Officer Training in the army - leadership and management can be taught and improved, and even natural ability will only get you so far.

I’ve walked out on shifts. The owner of the restaurant had made me manager. Basically just a title with more responsibility and no extra pay. He left me and one other person (a new employee) to run the store. At a minimum I needed four staff, including myself, for the store to run efficiently without any hiccups. Tell me why, when you’re short staffed, does it seem to be the busiest you’ve ever seen the store, as if your is the only place in town to eat. We’re getting our asses kicked, and I call the owner for help because he took all the other employees to some “taste of whatever” festival, and he needed everyone’s help to run the stand. He sent the friggin maintenance guy, who doesn’t know the first thing about working in a restaurant. I clocked out left my key on the office desk and walked out. My phone was blowing up the whole night. Never even gave them an explanation. Restaurant didn’t last very long after that.
Someone should tell that boss the quote: "You can catch more bee's with honey, than you can with vinegar." He DESPERATELY NEEDS to learn that, and LIVE by that! LMAO

When I go to a party, social event, family gathering, etc... it's not about amusing myself. It's about socializing and being there with friends and family. I can't think of a single time where I needed to "amuse myself", because I had other people there to do things with (instead of doing things to). Play cards, board games, watch a movie, if you're into it have some drinks, tell stories, play charades, there are countless things you can do as a group to entertain everyone. Bullying one or a few people for entertainment defeats the purpose for them to attend. I feel bad for Op, my family has it's downfalls but this is pretty fucking bad. I'd hate to say it, but I wouldn't attend gatherings with those people. I'd set aside time to visit with the family I do care about, then leave the rest in my dust.

For the first story, haven’t Op’s family ever heard of outdoor/indoor games. What happen to bouncing castle or pool/slide. What happen to playing companion games such as racing, egg carrying, water ballon, ect. Pranks don’t always have to be a form of entertainment.
Also, a "prank" is usually a once, maybe two times appearance type thing. (At least, that one form of it) You tell the same joke over and over again, it stops being funny. It's also only a "prank" when everyone can laugh about it.

Most definitely. The man reeks of entitlement and, quite honestly, straight up narcissism. Even when times are good, he sat back and let his employees overwork themselves with little to no help at all, except to micromanage them once a month. And when the consequences of his own actions caught up with him and it harmed his business, he blamed everyone else but himself and refused to even accept that most of his employees quit until he literally could not keep the store open. The guy obviously respected no one but himself.
man that first one was wild. My family did the chair thing too, but it was WAY more lighthearted than what went on with them, because there were always extra places to sit and noone ever took it that far. some people are just mean spirited

It’s not that people don’t want to work, moron. It’s that people don’t want to work for sh** wages that don’t even cover gas money, then get there and be completely overwhelmed due to intentional crappy staffing, THEN get abused and screamed at and belittled by both customers and management. Pay a decent wage, staff appropriately, and treat people like people, and you’ll be amazed at how many people want to work for you and patronize your business. Happy employees make customers happier!

OP should tell his old boss to be a man and stop throwing a temper tantrum at his door step. If that front door episode was an attempt to beg for him to come back to work, I'd say the boss failed miserably.
With the first story, I think OP should just stop going to family functions for their mental health because good God. As well as their sister divorcing her husband anyway because if he restorted to attempting to destroy a person's possession over something really petty, he should not be in their child's life and *will* ruin their life.
There is a moment in the pizza place story, that caused me to have this thought.... when the owner was at OP's door saying something like "... get back to work. Right NOW." ... I imagened him pointing in a random direction, as he stomps one of his feet like an upset little kid.
Plus.... when OP wrote that he called a few other ex workers, that the owner was doing the same thing at their places. What came to mind was that the owner is wasting time trying to get people he know don't want to work for him (for various good reasons). That he should spend that time either getting new employees (who will most like quit at some time.... lol), or except he is the problem and fix himself before moving on.... BUT, I'm figuring that last part won't happen, because he dosen't seem to be that type of person.
My family functions also get a little crazy, but never to the degree of petty and immature as the first story. Our gatherings are all filled with homemade dinners, political rants, funny jokes and games, and sometimes we mess with each other. One Christmas, one of my aunts tackled and wrestled a cousin (not her kid) to the ground cause he was talking shit, and needed to be knocked down a few pegs. Roars of laughter erupting cause this was very atypical of this aunt. She won btw. The cousin was probably around 17-18 at the time.
Another year, my younger brother was talking shit. He'd hit a massive growth spurt, and was in football at the time. So my dad and uncle and a couple cousins grabbed and literally drug him out of the house and into the the snow without his coat or shoes on in the middle of winter. Everyone was cackling, brother was laughing as well, and grandma was yelling cause he pulled her fridge out of place trying to hang on to anything. Im laughing again as I type. Everything is always in good fun. But we've definitely had to get a but creative these past couple years cause Grandma doesn't let us wrestle in the house anymore after dinner.
I will never see what's so attractive about drunken abusers with rage issues. That first family has issues.
The second story. I’ve been there. I was a supervisor at a warehouse club food court. I had every manager breathing down my neck. If I was able to work a miracle one day, they would expect it the next day. I hated breathing during that time in my life. I had a nervous breakdown. I’ve never really been the same
Seat Story: WHY DON'T THE PARENTS JUST BUY FOLDING CHAIRS. Like, seriously? If there regularly aren't enough seats just buy some cheap folding chairs, or ask people to bring extras during events. These people are WAAAY to bored. Have they not heard of yard games?

He called me back a week later asking if I was "ready" to come back. I said 'nope' and hung up

You see, there's an issue with that. It makes too much sense for the boss to realize that. It wasn't his idea so he doesn't like it

i know next to nothing about running a business and i can already think of a few things that could have save that business
1) top of the list, increase prices, you're swamped, you have high demand and even when you had a reasonable amount of staff you couldn't keep up with it, increasing prices will impact your demand but if you don't raise your prices too much you probably wont notice, service will improve, quality will improve, customers will be happy, and you'll bring in better cash flow to~
2) pay employees their worth, you've sacrificed some demand for increased cashflow, but you're still probably high in demand, this will be stressful to your employees especially because basically no one tips the way you expect them to tip, so pay your employees like they're not getting tips, maybe even offer better benefits, just remember that you're competing with other businesses as much for staff as for customers/sales
3) stop lying to customers, if a customer knows what to reasonably expect [for example, you tell them order volume is high and their order may take an hour, and then it actually takes an hour as expected], they're less likely to go away disappointed with service, if they're not willing to wait then don't trick them into waiting

Second Story: I find it funny how this boss is blaming everyone but himself over him losing his business. I guess he is losing business because of OP and not him being a horrible POS, who treats his employees like shit (sarcasm). This man is absolutely insane and got what he deserved

In the first story, I am guessing the BIL just fundamentally dislikes the OP. He uses "teasing" and "pranks", but the reality is that it's not just a "stupid chair".
2nd story: this is my wet dream. I too had a shitty pizza job with a nutjob boss who can't even keep an assistant manager and will only be reprimanded with anger management classes. One day, ONE day he will do something crazy enough to get arrested and the world will finally know peace

Wow, that chair family thing has a lot of weird dynamics to it. Control freaks? Dominance plays? Bad parents not establishing boundaries in childhood? Latent tendencies towards bullying behaviour? Sounds like an awful environment to grow up in.
Story 1: I just dunno how this family is so inept to NOT have enough chairs for everyone, you know how many people are coming, how hard is it to get some plastic chairs for everyone to sit on?
Story 2: Yes OP, you should wave at him, hopefully while the cops have their back to the house and he can see you. Also this is why living outside of America is nice, Labour laws that actually protect the employee. ie Europe "As an employer, you must ensure that your staff does not work more than 48 hours per week on average (including overtime), over a reference period of up to 4 months. Your employees must be given at least 11 consecutive hours of daily rest and at least 24 hours of uninterrupted weekly rest every 7 days, over a reference period of 2 weeks." Thats not to mention time off for sickness and mandatory leave (4 weeks/year).
I swear USA comes off as still having slavery, however instead of feeding and housing the slaves they pay them a wage, and the slave pays for food and housing out of that wage.
Honestly, for the last story, if I was that former employee, and that boss was at my door screaming at me to come back to work, blaming me for his business failing, etc. I would just look him dead in the eye and tell him "No, this (and gesture to him in an oval) is why you have no employees. This is why your business is failing. Because of your fucking attitude and demanding unreasonable things from people and then calling them lazy. The only person ruining your business is you. Now get the fuck off my property before I call the cops."
