@@JoystickNY thanks for your video. Hey what brand or model was the 2 boxes that had a hinge when you opened them. I am new to gaming and want to try out these style boxes. This way I can change joysticks so that I can get a feel for what several brands feel like. I want to find out which one I like the most. Also are these wireless or wired fightsticks? Since this video is over a year old now. Do you also have any recommendations for a fightstick. I like that you can change ball too to batt top easily. This way you can use either and are not stuck with only one style. Thanks

Growing up in the US I always saw a combination of ball and bat tops. I never thought much about it. I just assumed it was purely aesthetic. I specifically remember seeing ball tops on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles machine. They used different colored parts for the 4 players since each player was a different turtle. The use of yellow instead of orange for Michelangelo REALLY stood out to me so I remember that machine well. I think I also mostly saw bat tops on older games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Newer games in the 90s were mostly using bat tops, even in US arcades.

Bat tops also offer better leverage from their height, so you can use stronger springs for faster return to neutral. And you have more control since the index finger plays a big part in controlling the bat top.
I'm a big fan of Japanese arcades and can never switch to bat tops / Korean levers even if they were technically superior :)

Love the explanations on the real advantages and disadvantages of each type of stick top. I get that everyone uses what fits them best, but when you ask on the internet what are the real advantages and disadvantages of each type of controller they hit you with the "Use what suits you best", which makes it really hard to get a feel for what you should be looking for when choosing your perfect controller.

Paired with Octagate, it's the perfect STG lever setup. I may shorten them down, though. On to episode 2~!

A lot of people in the usa prefer bat tops. But i actually dont think thats what they are having a preference for. I think that they like the happ/lorenzo mechanism under it. It would feel a bit weird to put a ball top on a happ, but it would still feel more "normal" to most americans who grew up in arcades in the 90s.
You cant just slap a bat top on a sanwa and expect it to feel the same. It will feel like hot garbage. But a ball top on a happ would be fine (-ish). Ive still got a few nos happ joysticks out in the garage. I really wish i could jam one into the 8bitdo fight stick.

I just modded my Hori RAP V Hayabusa (nintendo switch version) with a Sanwa Battop and a new 2lb spring, and it's SOO much more comfortable to play with, even in games like Street Fighter i'm much better now. I think it's because i have rather long fingers, so my hand curls very naturally to the side of a battop, compared to a balltop.

I was curious: Would you know of any balltop that has the same matte-like texture of Sanwa/American battops? Or, alternatively, have you ever tried an aluminum balltop?

Loving this channel. I got two Namco ps1 arcade sticks recently, the yellow stick and button ones, I think I will try to put a bat top on one of them, I play KOF and Tekken and will see how bat top is as never used one. In the UK the arcades of the 90's I grew up in, I was about 9 years old in 1997 there and machines were always ball top as far as I'm aware lots of machines were Japanese in North London and in Central London, places like Picadilly Circus's Trocadero (Sega World London) and Oriental City/ Yaohan Plaza's SegaDome in Colindale. I could be wrong I was not that old, but I wonder how arcade machines were and are in Europe, ball or bat top I wonder 🕹. Thanks for your awesome channel

If you're ever building or want the classic style US style arcade sticks you want to buy iL parts, from Europe, and not Happ. Happ used to be the chief seller in US arcade parts. iL was the supplier for most of the sticks we're familiar with from the 90s. Happ changed suppliers to a Chinese factory at some point and the new parts are not the same. I have about six different arcade controllers and three of them have iL parts in them for retro games. That said the aftermarket for Japanese parts like the JLF is pretty big you can get very similar results with one and you've got more options with restrictor gates which are not really an option on an iL stick.
It's amazing how big the market for consumer arcade parts has blown up. When I first bought an arcade cabinet in 2000 you pretty much had to goto Happ or Bob Roberts for parts. Happ was really caught off guard by the wave of millennials growing up and wanting to buy arcade parts for all sorts of projects.

8:48 Ball tops are not controlled the same way as bat tops with your palm vertical. Some people might find that the right way so there's really no wrong way but how you are supposed to use ball tops is have your palm facing down (the left side of the palm can still rest on the board) and angle your middle finger so that the right side of your middle finger handles all movement to the right, then your index finger takes care of all movement downwards and your thumb is responsible for the left and up direction. Left you press where your thumb print by moving the finger and up by moving your hand up so it cups the curve of the thumb. So you have three fingers and you hand responsible for each microswitch. Diagonals are natural combinations of the directions.
That can't be done on the ball top because it's so high and the movements would be longer.
(edit) I'm sure there are 50 right ways to use a ball top but the fundamental is to find a comfortable way for you to hit the main directions with a single finger. But using your whole palm sideways like on a bat top won't work for all games.
