I rebuilt an engine out of a VW Jetta years ago. It use to consume a liter of oil per week. It constantly puffed blue smoke to the point that it was embarrassing at traffic lights. Once I opened the engine up I found everything appeared perfect except for those oil hole which were completely plugged. I cleaned them out by poking them with a drill bit. Ran perfect after, no smoke.
When I re ringed mine I turned the block upside down and really rinsed the engine out good with brake cleaner then wd40. Hope u did this to get any paste, dirt ect out of engine.
I checked them, and out of the packet the 2nd rings were spot on, the top ones gap larger out of the packet - by design I hope. I think thats the fashion these days, something to do with pressure maybe?
Really enjoying your work. Thanks for the uploads.
Thanks!
Can't wait to hear this engine fire up for the first time... 🙂
Yeah firing into oil spitting rage. Thats my hope.

That's a great data point, thanks! I think I'm going to need all the oil control I can get with this one. Suspect it is going to be a heavy breather.

And rubber hoses over rod bolts so they don’t scratch the crank on piston insertion
Thanks. Great tips. I was too lazy to do the hose thing..Next time I promise...Quite possibly with this engine.
You are doing great. I'm curious, like you no doubt, as to how the compression test will go.
Thanks, and absolutely, its a pain the engine has to be in the car to do one.
Did you set the ring gaps prior to installing?

Did you get a 2nd opinion on the condition of the bores?
No, apart from the CZcams massive. I will do a leakdown test when its back together as an indication of the horrors to come.
