Minecraft: Silent, Lag-effective Multi-Item Sorting System

- Today I present a cool and flexible dropper item elevator, and an update to my favourite sorting system - wall of chest, proper silent multi-item sorting system removing last remaining issue - hoppers getting stuck due to items duplication, and bringing much better performance so its not a resource hog anymore.
VERY highly recommend to use with Optifine client. With Optifine client experience is not affected by the sorting system, while with Vanilla client, which tries to render all changing blocks, you may experience fps drops.

Thank you! Amazing sorting system, cant wait to build this :-D Loved the rail usage btw. cool trick!
xisumavoid amazing work🙌
xisumavoid just when yoy finish your convoluted stick design

I love how you put classical music in the background haha
yeah I like it too

"And it doesn't lag the universe server"
Confirmed it Working on a 1.15.1 Server after troubleshooting my own mistakes :D its a truely AWESOME design! Gnembom at his best :D
Edit: Working as well on a 1.15.2 Server. EditEdit: Works on 1.16 server as well. And I think it will withstand many upcoming patches. Add composters over hoppers to reduce lag! (You could even replace the droppers below the rails with composters)
Thanks for checking 😊
in 1.15.2 i have some item that don't get sorted.
Ika Rus explain the Problem a bit further, maybe I can help.
@@MRlegofreak777777 in some random chest specific items don't enter it ( in one chest for exemple, iron ore gets in but golden ore don't)
Ika Rus hmm make sure the Pulse-extender circuit on the bottom is working properly, that was a mistake I made which lead to the machine spitting out stuff. Also if you unload the chunks of the sorter while it’s running it won’t sort all items into the chests. Otherwise it should function
P.s.: I’m running mine on 1.15.2 now and it’s working fine.
gnembon, I always love that you include classical music in the background of your vids. Soothing to the ears :)
Wow! You've really upped the production quality and of course you are still making comprehensive videos covering epic machines... well done!
If anyone is wondering, yes, it works today in the latest release
Also you only need powered rails now
So no need for detector rails?
Wow amazing. Sometimes I think "I can do redstone" and then I watched this guy and I realized I'm simply banging rocks together.😜
You can be as good as him if you want to and keep learning and building.
Really great explanation and fantastic sorting system! Using the powered rails was especially clever. I never knew their update mechanics worked like that.
Wow! You always amaze me with your explained redstone ideas. Thank you for going through the thought process steps by step. It really helps.
Fantastic design as always Gnembon! I'll definitely be using this in my Let's Play.

Amazing video Gembon. I downloaded your world and followed yout tutorial steps and built the 3 high version just fine. When I tried building the 6 high version it sorted fine until the 5th dropper elevator from the left. It looked like the torch tower and rails were of timing. I heard dropper clicking and found items stuck halfway up the 5th elevator. I could figure out where to add a delay but am assuming I made some mistake as xisuma and logical geek boy have use your design for 6 high and had no complaints. I really have fun building it so I'll try it again from scratch. Great design! You guys at scicraft are next level.
That's a nice simple revamp to the old silent droppevator. I find those to be more compact then a 3x3 block tower, though a lot more resource expensive and prone to rs lag without this revamp. The sorting seems reasonably simple considering the complexity of the problem, including the modular compacting, but I'll just have to download that world and look at it to really get it and build. Thx!
Thank you so much! This was rally fun to build in survival actually! All parts were so easy to understand separately and learned a lot!
I'm feeling lost and stupid.
But I got there's an input which starts a clock while sending items into multiple loops of hoppers/droppers, timed in a way that every hopper leading into a chest stay locked at least 1/2,5 second so that the hopper above can try to put its item into its chest, if allowed, before dumping to the hopper below which will do the same.
Don't get me wrong Gnembon, thanks for having shared such an idea, and the tutorial is clear enough too.
Just I want it mirrored and 10x4 because it's how I need in the space I have. I'll re-engineer all this to fit my requirements, following your guidelines but not the tutorial.
When I feel so lost and stupid, I think may even be, but I'll get out of this anyways.
But further and foremost, I'm not the kind which follows the also very clear Mistycat tutorial bc he likes the shaders wooooh then modifies the storage room of his base bc he only knows how to copy it as 6x9 and with input on the left, or runs at the end of the room anytime he has to dump the inventory in.
Hope this could be encouraging for anyone who's feeling the same.
Don't just copy the motherfckn redstone. And never give up to the feeling of dumbness a challenge can (should?) give you.

you do the most awesome designs (among others of course) yet still you get so little subscribers, even though you would deserve way more mate.
I think its because humans are lazy and want a block for block tutorial which he rarely shows
Nah, this is there's a lot of in-depth stuff involved in youtube itself (search engine for example), not speaking for psychology manipulation etc.
Basically, he's videos aren't designed to suit the majority
@@Rawrexe-kj4vu No lots of people hate those, they are slow irritating and inflexible, without relevant information nor alternatives. Only people getting started want to know that stuff.
Wonderful work. I'm determined to understand how this system gnembon designed works. I first watched the video, studied and practiced, came back, studied and practiced some more. I may be responsible for 30+ views between this and the 2016 version. Just realized I hadn't Liked this video yet! WTH I'm still plugging away at it - elevators work, interior hopper locking not yet. Next step is to check the world dl! It is so interesting how gnembon solved many of the problems: FOV efficiency, noise, continued sorting after comparators shut off, light updates. By the time I understand this contraption I should be able to build it from memory, in any config. Ha! Thanks!
Just finished building this. Great design and the world download was super easy to follow.
I just built it and it not filling the shulkers boxes
xisuma sent me here! lol not really, but he mentioned your design and now I'm here! Fantastic build! I can't wait to incorporate it into my world.
awesome job! i actually made this elevator that i used for your old shulker box storage design:)
really nice design. I guess now I know what to build in a certain area of my latest base's industrial area.
Hey gnembon, I built your system many times now and I'm very happy with it.
As we all know and you also touched upon in this video, torch towers do not allow for hopperspeed elevators. Recently, methodz has released a video showcasing the (first?) truly silent, lag-efficient, tileable, _hopperspeed_ elevator. Is it possible to use these in this system by adjusting the various clocks and hopper lock timings, making this sorting system altogether hopperspeed?
I tried it and failed, so I'd be very happy to hear your thoughts on that.
I do believe the bug he mentioned is now fixed.
I was exploring this idea too until I realized the real limiting factor on the system speed is not the dropper tower speed, but the hopper locking cycle. The cycle requires the hoppers to be locked for at least 5 ticks and unlocked for at least 5 ticks for proper item sorting into the chests/shulkers. He goes over this at around 7:40 in the video.
Fantastic design and explanation, planning to use this on Alpha Craft 😉
I love watching something i don't understand *at all* but still try to understand
Amazing system, built it in my 1.14.4 world and even my crappy laptop has no problem with it, thanks :)
Awesome system, I plan to build on my server. Thanks much.
I have a question:
Somebody mentioned it like a year ago in the comments but I'll bring it up anyway: I'm playing on server with relatively good connection on 1.13. and sometimes the Items in 6 chests high setup skip and move to the next hopper when I put even 64 in. Any ideas for fixes ?
Ok, so with any silent item elevator design that I find, it has a problem with the bottom dropper getting stuck and for some reason not being able to move items. I think it is caused whenever I leave the chunks and unload the sorter while it is sorting. Is there any way to fix this properly?
(I've just been AFK'ing the sorter which kinda defeats the whole purpose why I built it in the first place)
Wow I made a storage system like this but bigger redstone in the back and very laggy good job dude im definitely building this
Maybe its possible to move the torchtower in the middle. Then you can use the max signal length from rails. Up to 8 in each direction plus the middle one instead of 9 in one.
Next idea: Itemelevators which are povered directly from observers should have a better performance.
And last thought: it could may be possible to detect the dropper elevator directly with the observers instead of using the rails. So that you don't need the second clock. And maybe the system could be smaler.
Did you build upon these ideas? If so and you had success, I'd be very happy to hear about your results!
I watched this once before, amazing work by the way, and was wondering if you, or anyone, had any footage of this system being put through it's paces on a server with other players as I don't want to inadvertently cause server wide lag from an item sorter, or spend ages collecting resources for something I may not get to use. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!

lol
Great, now I have to redesign my storage room again thanks to you ;)
seeing regex in the comments. Love it
I heard 7200 items per second and thought “wth, I’m sold instantly” and then I read the screen. Still a great design however!
You can tell quality because it lasts forever. This system still works in 1.16.3, 3 years later
So I honestly think you should do a video on redstone lag and its' effect on a single chunk or the whole world. I say this because I have run into this issue although an extreme one where a duplicate redstone system will lag my client to hell but if it is 2 or 3 chunks away from my busy build it won't hardly lag at all.
You explained your system very well!
hey, i seem to have a problem with the system. although there are places for items to go, they just seem to skip them when i load the system with too many items. ive copied the system from the extension youve made to contain 6 shulker boxes in every row, the efficient one.
i assume the problem is with repeaters not being properly delayed, but ive double checked and everything seems to be the same. do you happen to know what might cause this?
In the world download, there are a couple hoppers facing the wrong direction on the model of the larger system. I don't recall exactly where, but they're near the top in the center of the wall of shulkers.
Hey I think I know what was worng as the other person said and the signals ain't set right and some of the torches are gone
Sorry to bring up an old comment, but did you ever find a fix for this as I seem to be getting a similar issue
Worked very good in single player, i do recommend for single player. I tried on a moderately laggy server and it was letting item skip there filters and falsely putting them in the output %20 of the time, build at your risk own on servers. (1.19)
Love this system! I built at first base and it worked flawlessly on 1.13.1 but with some lag. Optifine cleared up the lag quick so I decided to build at next base - now I'm having issues and can't get it to work (probably something stupid that I missed). Also, the struggle is real when you keep breaking blocks with a clock on the world download version because you're not used to creative mode :P
One question... what is the button for on the 1st dropper on the back row left?? I can't figure that one out. Is it a test to see if we pay attention to a stone button on a dropper? lol
I still need to find a reason to build one of this, so cool and compact!
Hey Gnembon, great sorting system. The individual control is awesome. My manual wall of shulker boxes will definitely be getter revamped. I have a question that's a little unrelated. When you said that droppers were generally better than furnaces for reducing lag, do you know why. I've always heard that and tried and practiced it. I'm never sure why though. Xisuma always uses furnaces, and he replied to a comment I left saying that there was no difference. I was wondering if that's the truth or has there been any in depth research done on this? Does a furnace simply jut have more code to calculate or whatever. I don't really know how I would even go about researching that given I don't know how to read code, but I was wondering if you could take a look into this?
I can confirm this works on 1.15.2. Also on a paperMC server!
Absolutely great sorting system. Luckily I only started the survival world, when I studied the previous system. Now with iron farms, only redstone is a bottleneck, but first slice is already sorting.
Thanks.
Sorter is done now. I already spent some time before I started building the sorter, organizing all items into consistent groupings... I have 9 columns of doublechests, 4 levels high, with the last two columns for single stacking items (potions and enchanted items...), so from the top chest in the 8th row (potion ingredients), items go directly to the output chest.
I tried with singlechests, which I somehow preferred, but it would take much more columns to store at least 2 stacks of everything. I got to 15 columns of single chests...
Now I always just dump everything into the input chest, even if I just picked up some items for crafting and there is some leftover :)
Don't know now if I should go now a build a proper warehouse in the basement (columns of doublechests for each massively produced items)? Probably, since I don't have any shulkerboxes yet...
Nice, you got a compliment from Xisumavoid!
It is a well deserved compliment too, excellent work with the design and thank you for posting this video. You are a very technical Minecraft player and I enjoy how you teach the topics you cover in your videos.
why was there cobblestone in the boxes when i dowloaded the map, and how did they get there/ what purpose did they have. And also, the sorting systems I know can only sort one item per chest, meaning i have to place the item i want into the hopper and fill up the left spaces with another item. how can i sort multiple items in one chest ?
The chests themselves end up doing the sorting. If you fill each space in a chest with the items you want in that chest- one item per slot- then only that item will get put in the chest. Otherwise it will just pass on to the next hopper and look for a compatible slot in the next chest. I think you are referring to the hopper sorting system, where you put like 21 items in each hopper and when it has a strong enough signal it will push out an item. This doesn't use comparators for the hoppers. It does use comparators for the dropper elevators, to keep them silent.
Great design, but I have a question.
I have used this system on my Realm on 1.16 (built on 1.15 after March) 6x chests high, and some items seem to get stuck in the dropper elevators every now and again. I believe this has to do with me leaving and unloading the chunks while the system is processing the items.
Is there a better and more automated way to flush these stuck items out of the system than by manually removing some of the lit redstone torches in the back to force the droppers to discharge, then replacing the torches? Or better yet, a way to avoid items getting stuck altogether? Am I perhaps doing something wrong that could cause this issue?
I believe I have followed the world download guide (green path) accurately, and after making some attempts at troubleshooting and looking for solutions, I am largely clueless as to what a possible solution may be.
I'm having this issue as well. I don't think its a chunk issue though. i think the reason is that once the bottom dropper is empty the comparator stops powering the torch tower leaving items in the droppers higher up the tower. Based on the clock design, the clock is not updating the dropper tower. if it did this may be a way to fix it.
Did you end up solving this problem? Seem to behaving the same issue now (1.18.1)
Cool improvement ideas!
I have a suggestion for Fun Farms: Creeper only farms with and without cats for gunpowder.
For the early game or next to the base if the next whitchhut is far away
Prof Bits ilmango has one without, using pistons
Both farms are actually ready, just need to find time to prepare them for publication and record it.
Nice, thanks for the answer gnembon and I am really looking forward to see that video!
your videos are so engaging that I think most people forget to like and subscribe :D
Gnembon : Wish it was 6000 items per second!
also Gnembon : creates the carpet mod
Can you man a tutorial but only one slice and the extra things needed
I need this in every survival world of mine.
So I built the lag-effective 3 chest system, and it worked fine. However, when I tried to expand it by 2 layers (5 chest hight total) the entire thing broke. Only about 2% of the items that go through it are actually disrtibuted in the chests. I'm guessing the timings are not tileable, but he did not mention anything about messing with the timings to add a layer unless you went over the 6 chest hight total.
Thanks! I like the base in an ender chest concept and the Mozart.
I just build the 9x6 chest version. I'll be thinking about how to organize it while in the End hunting for more shulker shells.
What does the backward facing row of hoppers right below the droppers on the top front row do? Is that to limit the rate of items coming down from the top to the speed the filtering hoppers/chests can handle?
+Greg Ames the top row of hoppers is responsible to time perfectly when to send items to the first row of sorting hoppers
Are there any full build tutorial videos for this? I can't run two profiles at a time and his explanations about which path to follow is a bit confusing.
take screenshots, follow those there is always a way around
Download the world he made, there is a full step by step tutorial in the world
the hoppers seem to be unlocked so the items just fall down to the next hopper instead of going into the chest / shulker .. any help with this?
Heyho, seems like that the system for 6 shulkers is not working in 1.14.4, at least for me...
Noticed that items get stuck in the dropper-elevator (multiplayer survival server, given download world), sometimes in the dropper at the top, sometimes even in between...
anyone else experienced such issues? Or has someone even got a solution for this?
This is glorious.
Ig this vid is not for a minecraft newbie who wanted to build a item sorter. ☺
Good vid tho. Keep it up
you can also build it shorter and less tall right? basically any size less than 10 wide? thinking of building a few segments of this system and have sections of storage dedicated to different types of items.
i just built it in my survival world and only the bottom row of shulkers can suck items from the hoppers. i checked all the repeaters for the timing and its correct. the only different thing with the one in the download world of yours, is that I built it mirrored. does that break it?
I have a bug with this, triple checked I copied the design fine, which I have. The last item of the stack goes to the 'overflow' chest. So; Put 63 stone in (With a double chest filled with 1 stone in each slot) and the slot will fill to 63 and the last one goes to the overflow chest. Any reason why?
Great!
[edit] I later realised the filtering is done in the shulker boxes themselves. The redstone behind them periodically locks and unlocks to allow an item to filter through each column until it find a matching box. [/edit]
I'm confused about how this actually sorts. How does the item get to the correst chest? I.e. Where is the filtering done?
With "matching box" defined by the items that are already in the box. When you're placing a box to receive sorted items, you put at least one item in each of the 27 inventory slots. Then the sorter can't add any more items to the box unless they can go into one of the existing stacks.
Yeah, I later realised each slot need to be prefilled. Thanks.
Because you fixed the torch update bug, this design could be improved, right?
has there been any more developments into multi-item sorting after this design?
Search for RaPsCaLLioN1138 or metamilo for the latest nearly hopper speed, silent, multi-item sorters.
I tried building this in my creative test world, but the items aren't going into the chests/shulks? They are going around the system just fine, and I've checked the repeater timings. I can't seem to fix it.
Is this suitable for multiplayer/ lag friendlier then tango tek's multi-item storage system design? I got into trouble for the lag I caused so I want to be sure before I build something similar
I have items staying behind in the system when its done sorting. Does enyone have the same problem or fix for this?
Will it work with the new 1.16 redstone changes?
i would really like to try this, but would love it if you took the time to make a video tutorial for building it, instead of a download and follow the path explanation, step by step tutorials are very nice to pause and go back to look, to get a good understanding for us newer red stone users
Thank you!
I have built this (followed the green line) and the first chest (top left) in the system will not receive any items... It happens on the one in the world download too.
Confirmed working in 1.16 on singleplayer world
thx!!
Is there a way to get that last hopper to unlock and release items to the output while the system is still getting items in the input?
i honestly understood none of this but great work anyway
Content idea that would help that may b easy?.. Idk? Simple short videos that explain how the code chooses to spawn specific mobs or groups. Ideas like: laws of a mob spawner, pigmen in the overworld, distances u need to b from stuff, what spawns where etc.. kinda broad but may be somthin...
he mentioned using solid block elevators in the begining is that an option with this storage system?
Me seeing this video:
"I like your funny words magic man."
The design works just great on singleplayer but i've got an issue with it on the smp where the bottom row of chests won't recieve any items whatsoever. i don't think it is a mistake i made because i used litematicha to make sure i don't make any. i think it's server-side lag that made it, any ideas on how to fix that?
is it a vanilla server? or spigot/paper etc.? spigot and others might interfere with redstone
I put in the last row of observers by making myself 1 block tall with a trapdoor. I highly recommend this method
Why does this design have one row of locking/unlocking hoppers above the first row of chests/shulkers? Could that row be removed and all the stuff at the top moved down one level and would the sorter continue to function correctly, or help me understand exactly how it would break? (I'm off to experiment with this to try and find out for myself, also.)
No, you can't cut out that top row of hoppers, and I think I know why (I tested and I noticed the system became super leaky). Sometimes items will arrive in the top front droppers with just the right timing so they fall into that first row of hoppers but then they don't have enough time to be placed into a chest or shulker in front of that hopper (if there was one). So the first row of hoppers is there to ensure when items fall down into the next row of hoppers they'll have the full five ticks of delay so they can always be placed into the shulker or chest.
How can i avoid the staggering effect it has on my Grafix, it creates this tiny staggering effect no matter mow much i take down the gfx, i have the best graphic card there is so it has do be something else, I'm also using optifine, trying to find an option there.
Minecraft is a CUP intensive game the GPU doesn't really matter. There are some intel chips that are buggy.
How does the item elevator put different item into each chest?
When i built it on my server my blocks are not depositing into the chest wall and are instead getting sucked immediately into the hopper below it and the whole thing does not work correctly. But it works fine in single player. Anyone else having this issue?
Server has redstone optimization? On paperMC without changing the default settings the system works for me
can you use activator rails instead of powered rails due to a cheaper recipe
Is there a way to transform this and make it work for bedrock editing
Is it possible to build this smaller. like only 3 high chest and a row of 8 or something?
Hey! I recently built this design on my private vanilla server and absolutely love it! However sometimes a few items don‘t get sorted in properly and land in the leftover chest at the end despite there being free space for those items. Altough it isnt that big of a problem i wanted to know what the reason for this could be. Is it possible that this happens when chunks get unloaded?
Is anybody here experiencing the same and knows a possible fix or reason for this?
Having the same issue, as I am just trying to use a tiny piece of this for a different redstone build of mine. If you find a fix lemme know, as will I.
@@KreAtorGames Same here on a paper server. I tried playing with repeater timings, but nothing seems to fix the problem. I would love to find a solution. Maybe adding more a second repeater in front of the one locking the hoppers to have a greater delay ? I don't know.
@@eliandirsinaril1999 I eventually got mine working somehow? I am not entirely sure how.
I really love this build ! Is there a build tutorial for the build which was displayed in the background at the intro 00:19
Do you think it will work on 1.16?? And do you recommend using schematics?
Why is it that when I sort a stack of items 63 get through for example into the overflow chest and one is left in the system and only arrives the next time I sort something?
this system cant handle unloading chunks while its running, if you do items pile up in the elevator, now and again you will have to remove the redstone torch furthest in the back to run the elevators, this will make sounds from the droppers and they will empty, its like flushing the system. this is because the items on their way up will stay there if the chunk unloads, they will continue when you put something in the sorter again, but then its leaving 1 item behind when its done. the elevator is runing item by item and is again runing the timer, if it was run by the timer it wouldnt do this, but then it wouldnt be silent.
@@jehansen76 I built it within my spawn chunks and it happened even if I stayed within them. Unfortunately, I can't test it anymore because I replaced it but thanks for your reply
This is great, works for me on ps4 as well. If I put like 20 of these in one world will it cause lag?
Joseph Richer that depends on a lot, if they are all running items through them at once you will probably experience some lag but chances are that you wouldn’t be doing that. You are best off to use the most lag friendly methods, as he uses here, and if your concerned for something massive just try it out in creative and see how it goes
Tho this idea is cool, it's not space efficient as for an automated skulker storage... It would be best to run specific sorters for a skulker storage system into a few double chests.
Everything shuffles past the chests and it won't move from section to section, any fixes?
MC-2340 is reported fixed - before I go testing myself, has anyone used the alternate faster dropper design in a real world server?
Hmm. I tried this on a server and it didn't seem to work. I did a side by side comparison and the observer blocks seemed to be triggering the repeaters faster on the server then on single-player. Any ideas?
Acg 1000 I’m having the same problem this is my third design I’ve tried and all work fine in single player but when I build on my server it never sorts properly, have you found a fix?
Yea, I found a fix. I think that there was some missing redstone in the timer at the bottom of the sorter. Double check that you have all the redstone dust. If you want I can send you a screenshot of mine.
Acg 1000 idk I’ve checked it countless times and everything is correct so it’s not an error on the build, gnembon replied to another comment of mine and I private messaged him so we will see if it’s another issue
Sounds good. Good luck!
*good job*
How does the redstone clock look under the mirrored side?
