I've had my Tamiya XV-01 Lancia Delta 1/10 RC rally car for about 6 years and it's still bone stock! But now it's time for some routine maintenance, a few Tamiya Hop-Ups and some extra power!
So in this video I take you through the process of adding the upgrades and a chat about what benefits they will hopefully have for this outstanding Tamiya rally chassis!

That's a great XV-01 upgrade video, Mark. It's incredible seeing the stock aluminum pinions wear out against plastic like they do. You would think the plastic would wear out too, but it's surprisingly tough. As for the XV-01, what an awesome chassis. It's nice to see yours is so well used and still in such great shape. The slow mo shots were leaving me wanting more!

Oh yes, I've had many an alloy pinion end up like this one, sadly I couldn't find a steel one in time for this video. Never worn out a plastic spur gear though! The XV01 is my favourite road and rally chassis, it just handles like a dream. And yes, it's great quality as can be seen by my car after such a lot of use. Glad you enjoyed the slomos dude! Wow. That's the first I've seen of a worn pinion. I'd think it was ok, but comparing the 2 it's clearly not! 😁 So glad to see that Lancia get some love. They told us in college that 'the harder material always wears first' and there's the proof. I got a new rally car today, video coming soon.. bench tested it on 3S and I'm gonna leave it stock brushed. Plenty of power, and wait till you see the body! She's a looker 👀 Cheers Mark!

I have never been a tamiya rally guy, however bought one of these on sale, and well I have to say, its the smoothest tamiya I own. Stock and love it. Since then have been buying lots of hop ups. Yet to add to the car but will definitely add those Uni Shafts!

Good upgrades Mark. I do like this chassis. The little extras which come in the kit like the foam and rubber grommets, and the metal bearings in the steering mechanism make it a bit special.

Good to upgrade, but the Dragster ESC not a fan of them for me I prefer Hobbywing. Nice gift driveshafts and then a servo saver upgrade on top. Tamiya pinions with grease they make a worse mess and the grey mush wears plastic gears so lucky the pinion was OK. CVD's held with springs I always put heat-shrink over ring. Does run smooth with the new motor, looking forward to the run.
Hi Mal. Yeah, I prefer the 1060 too, but I had this Carson ESC lying around so I put it to good use. Those upgrades from Craig were a nice bonus! Those alloy 🧀 pinions are a pain though! Good tip about the heatshrink, thanks for that pal. Smooth as butter, fingers crossed it goes well! 🤞😎👍

Expertly done mate - these improvements should turn this car into a beast, and it's my favourite rally car too - the Integrale, so iconic. I was shocked to see the amount of gunk in the gearbox and the fact that the aluminium pinion had worn so much, though I do recall you mentioning previously about those aluminium parts being crap. Looking forward to the maiden run of this beauty...😎👍🏻.

When my G6-01 goes brushless, I can see that's a required upgrade.
Still hoping to have an XV-01 someday..... looking less likely, especially because it's behind the Wild One and Brat on my dream list....

Yeah I should have known better, Carm. Had plenty of those cheese pinions turn to dust in the past. My brushless Kong is still on the cheese pinion 😭!!!

Absolutely! It's not a good idea.... a steel pinion is a REQUIREMENT!
When I got my Inheritance, I bought a couple of Titanium Pinions, for my 8T brushless, 15lb, Axial Wraith....
What a very few people know, is that Titanium is a VERY hard, coarse metal. (I should have known, my Dad flew a plane entirely made of Titanium)
I had an opposite effect. The Titanium pinion ATE my Nylon/Plastic spur gear!!!
I would still recommend these pinion gears... but be prepared to also get a steel spur gear. Just food for thought... 😉

I actually picked up one of these last week, got a cracking deal for it. Just having a mull on paint jobs now, but looking forward to the build and throwing it around rally stages

Your going to need the NN4 spacers upgrading to alloy if you haven't already. And a very kind gentleman from Custom RC Parts made me a alloy spur gear mount as that's made of cheese.

Nice bit of wrenching, Mark! Always nice to do some upgrades, and it's good to do an inspection of the components sometimes, looked great, except for that damned aluminium pinion, ha ha... Well, hopefully the next one lasts 6 years also, maybe a bit less with a speedier motor... I'm looking forward to seeing how much faster it is, and also if there is noticable difference with the other upgrades.

What an entertaining and interesting video, Mark. I like the way you punctuated the various hop-up procedures with footage of the XV-01 sliding around the English countryside like a proper hooligan.
I'm astounded to see how the aluminium pinion wore away against the plastic spur gear. That's very counterintuitive, but it reminds me of a time when I had a camshaft ground for a '70s Honda twin and the machine shop omitted to case-harden the lobes. As you'd expect, the cam lobes were destroyed, but what surprised me was that they took out the rocker faces too. Apparently the drag of the softer steel rubbing against them increased wear.

Yes it's a strange one, the way the hardness of different materials act when put against each other, especially under stress. Sometimes producing unexpected results! 😎👍

Tamiya got it so right with this chassis, the XVO1 is a stunning piece of engineering.
Still don't own one as yet, but have driven Daz's a few times,and loved it!
Always good to strip things down for a service and inspection, and perfect opportunity for some upgrades courtesy of Mr OAG (what a good bloke he is!)
That pinion showed that you have had a lot of fun with this kit, worn definitely..... but in all honesty it's actually done quite well lasting 6 years mate! (I've mashed a few a lot quicker than that in my monster beetle! 😂)
Amazing how good the belt and tension rating still is, and the spur looked perfect to!
That motor sounded sweet, should be a great improvement if your tto2 speed run is anything to go by!
The servo saver hop up was the most interesting, Daz has had no end of issues with the steering on his.
Originally it was not self centering under load, so he replaced the servo with a more powerful slim line one as he though the original may have been catching/sticking.
This helped, but he now finds he keeps knocking the steering out after a slight ding..... and I suggested the servo saver may be the issue!
Needless to say, I have forwarded him the link to this video!
I'm really quite excited over the up and coming Rally content that you and Craig have mentioned!
These are such fun cars to race, and from a viewers perspective they are so entertaining to watch on video..... they really capture the thrills of group B in miniature!
You, Craig, Rob and Dom combined with a posse of rally cars, and your combined wealth of videography /editing skills between the lot of you is going to be a recipe for some stunning content! Nice! 👌

As you say, after all the abuse it's had it is testament to the quality of this kit that the wear and tear was so minimal. Great advert for the kit!
I haven't had issues with the steering except for stones locking it up now and again, but I think the high torque servo might solve your friend's issues.
We are so looking forward to battling a few rally cars against each other this year and yes, they always present well for the camera. Should be a blast!

As is the Audi Quattro group B body to finish it with.
Unfortunately, I have been traumatised by rally car decals.....
I needed therapy after doing the 959's and celica grb! 😬
And, being the perfectionist I am was never entirely happy with the end result.
So, fast forward a few years and I recently managed to pick up a new old stock decal sheet for the 959 just so I could re do the red and gold stripes.
At a cost of £125 for the decals my anxiety level went through the roof.... and guess what?
I cocked them up again!!!! 🙄
Air bubbles, wrinkles , and mis alignment......
I was so annoyed with myself.
It's kinda put me off doing another rally car in all honesty!
So, maybe one day mate! 😉

I'm fine on the painting, and normally OK with decals..... I've buit so many cars over the years so there's no excuse really.
But, those 959 ones have got to be the worst ever! Even back in the day when I got my first one in 89 with good eyesight and pre arthritic fingers I struggled.....
In all fairness I've yet to see a 959 without air bubbles in the red and gold stripes..... Even in the Tamiya guide books their very own photo shoot cars have it!
The body curves all over the place at all different angles from panel to panel, and nothing is flat.
Also the gold stripe is a matt foil material that is very thin and non maleable.
It also doesn't help that the new old stock decals are 30+ years old, and have lost some of their stick.
I'm just gutted that I cocked these up for a 3rd time on this otherwise mint restoration.... especially as it took 3 years to find a genuine decal sheet, and the fact it cost me £125!!
Im not one to let things beat me, so will tackle the Audi Quattro group B shell as and when I eventually manage to get the XVO1 kit, I'm sure they will be a walk in the park after the 959 ones.
Also, the XVO1 will be going in my runner fleet, not joining the shelf queen's..... so I'm not quite so anal over perfectionism with my runners, as they don't stay mint for long! 😂

Looking through old sd cards today I found well over a hundred photos of the shelfie 959 restoration that I done in 2021......just waiting for Taylor to be free for an evening so we can edit them up into a restoration photo montage from start to finish to put out on the channel.
Hopefully it might make quite an interesting video.

Hey nicely done mate. Great chassis this like you say. I had to get those UV joints on mine because one of the dogbones fell out and couldn't find it in stock anywhere. As you know I went brushless with mine but I reckon your 18t brushed will be enough really. Your belt looked better than mine! The thing I think might need upgrading in future on mine is the tiddly little plastic bevel gears in the diff. I remember thinking they wouldn't last long when I put them in but I guess they have done ok so far. Hope this is now good for a load more rally sessions. Those comparison videos you did on this were really good and showed what a great handling chassis it is. Top stuff Mark. Hope you are having a jolly spiffing Friday with perhaps a beer or two 😁🍺🍺🍺

But you know me, I don't like to go too crazy as it wears the chassis components out with loads of power. I was thinking this should perk it up without shredding the gears too bad! I think those diff gears are stronger than they look (well, hopefully!!!)

Mark. Great video. The xv01 long damper spec conversion by yeah racing is fantastic. Makes the car handle great. Pair it up with the correct length yeah racing big bore go dampers. Amazing upgrade over stock

Wow that was the original pinion Mark? I use a lot of the standard tamiya ones and to be fair when only running from time to time they do last a while! Maybe tamiya had the idea for them to melt over time to protect the spur gear?
I have some steel ones in my DT-03 cars so l will see how they go and effect the spur!

Hi Tony! Hope you do get back into RC, I am 60 now and have several health issues that you don't see in my videos, but I find this hobby to be therapeutic and takes my mind off worries for a while! And yes the XV01 would be a great choice. Haha, yeah I should write complaint to Tamiya about that pinion! 🤣
