- Today we are talking about Strumming Patterns, specifically for leading worship with an acoustic guitar. Strumming patterns help you sit in the pocket with the band and are very important to the feel of a song! I've chosen 7 different strumming patterns that I've found helpful to use on Sunday Mornings while leading.

I have watched hundreds of strumming videos this is by far the best!. You break the rhythm down scientifically. Plus great examples to practice.
Ah thanks! I'm glad it's helpful to ya!
I feel like it might be helpful to highlight some more of the songs that we seem to fall back on boring patterns and highlight some way to switch it up!
That’s fair! Maybe I’ll do another video on that!
Thanks for your input. I been listening to the kick drum for beats 1&3 and snare drum for beats 2&4. Then listening for the dynamics in song and then playing it slower tempo to get the feel. Then playing at the song tempo bpm. The wonderful thing about guitar is ( Andres Segovia said) you can play the guitar for 90 years and you never master it. Because there is always something new to learn! The sound of the guitar had many different flavors like cello, violin, etc. Thank you again for sharing your talents and time with everyone. Giving our Lord the Praise, Honor and Glory with every song we play for Jesus our Messiah and God the Father.
Thank you very much! I just found your channel
Thank you, Matt! That was really helpful. God bless you for doing this.
I was struggling with strumming until I watched your video You made it concise and clear more than any other person CZcams !! Thanks. It gave me confidence to play with our praise and worship band!!
Awesome! Glad it helped!

Evergreen tips, man. To listen and to do what is natural is my favourite one 🔥

Hey Matt! I'm really enjoying these videos and I'm finding them very helpful. I especially love your philosophy of worship leading as a supportive role. It reminds me of how Jesus stooped down to become the servant of all for the purpose of raising us up with him. It makes sense that we should be the same for our team and our congregation, to mutually and equally lift up our praise to God.
I know of some people who would love to see a tutorial on how to play piano chords rhythmically within the song instead of just on the straight beat.
Thanks and great work.
Thanks brother!! I’ll be doing a keys video soon as I have the time!!
Really good teacher!
Thanks so much!
You had me laughing 😃 because it's true about the same strumming. First time I see you subscribed
Great video, really love your thoughts on this! Gonna go check out your EG video. I’m trying to get some more versatility as a worship leader. Would love to see one about how to lead on keys for a guitar player 🤪
Awesome!! Yes! I actually plan on making a keys video soon! Stay tuned!
I honestly love that first strumming pattern lol struggling to get it down though
Came for the strumming patterns. Stayed for the drumming impersonations.
😂😂😂
That's a very cool guitar btw
Thanks!!!! I Love it!
Can you or anyone here tell me what the basic pattern would be as a pattern explained in d and u strokes? Please put a space to show any ghost strums and capitals to show emphasis. This would be very helpful! Thanks
Thank u brother, I love this!!!!! I totally have this one strumming pattern!!! I Sooo wanna get into other patterns!! It hinders me!! Btw, what kind of guitar do you play?
Thanks man! My main acoustic is a Farida Old Town Series.
I really enjoy your singing voice. Any advice on singing for those looking to start?
Hmmmm... Just start singing! haha. I would say the biggest thing is finding your range and picking keys that fit within that comfortably. That'll be the biggest confidence booster starting out.
Thank you. I am a 70 year old rock player just now entering the worship music scene after being asked after over twenty years of not playing to return and support the band. Terrific suggestions. Regardless of what anyone says McGugan supporting a rock band is different (l a lot like a gun fight rather than an enjoyable playing g scene). Great suggestions. When do you just slow down a bit and just pick a little melody to support a quiet soft time in the song? I find myself doing this often and it sounds great to me but does it to everyone else?
Lol sorry. Spell check interfered with my comment no edit available. Have no idea where McGougan fit in there lol
Haha I don't know who McGugan is either!
Yeah that's a great idea to support the melody at times. As long as it doesn't interfere too much with the vocals! Or you can always do volume swells with it instead of clean picked notes.
Would you use the strumming pattern chart and tutorials? I like to practice
I don’t have anything like that I’m sorry!
Matt is there a chart avaliable for these strums to download?
I don’t have one unfortunately! I’m sorry!
Thanks Matt,
Can you tell me what thickness pick you are using now?
I usually use a .73!
Hey is that a Recording King? Nice guitar!
It’s not! It’s actually a “Farida” made by Elderly Instruments in Michigan. I love it!
5th strumming by points symbol plss
Where do you lead in NC? I live in NC as well.
Awesome! I’m at Integrity Church in Greenville, NC
What are the chords for 0:52 - 0:57?
What kind of guitar is that? It’s beautiful
It's a "Farida!" It's a model designed by Elderly Instruments in Michigan. They're a really cool store that has a legendary following around here!
I don’t understand the 1|a| and all that? Is there a simpler way like up down up down sort of type of stuff?
The letters and number and plus signs just refer to the way you count 16th notes. ( 1, e, and, A) or (1, e, +, A ) so it shows where the emphasis of the strum goes in the context of 16th notes.
Thank you!
"Everyone knows these" me not knowing one 😂
The reason is because 95% of todays worship songs have the same four chords, em,bm,am,d.
4/4 Strumming patterns
#1. 1:35 songs - build my life
#2. 3:07 songs - anchor, you are my strength, man of sorrows
#3. 6:40 songs - living hope
#4. 8:20 songs - Christ is risen
3/4 strumming patterns
#5. 10:42 songs - oh come to the alter
#6. 12:23 songs - amazing grace, how deep the father's love for us
#7. 14:30 songs - in Christ alone
I dint follow sorry. Confused w 1/A/&/e
It’s just rhythm counting. It’s how you count 16th notes! Sorry for any confusion!
Too much noise not bgm
Awesome video, but for someone who is still learning, you lost me totally.
Sorry about that! Where are you at in the learning journey? What are you working on right now?
Hi Matt, sorry for late reply. I can play a couple of songs on open chords. A lot of videos on guitar strumming, shows you how to play but never the strumming part. I am not at point, where I can decipher a strumming pattern. So if you told the viewer what pattern you played, it would help me tremendously. Thank you for responding and all of the best going forward
Jesus only allows Taylor Guitars. I play Martin
The idea that there are specific ways to strum "worship" music vs. any other is nonsense.
There’s no specific ways to strum worship. I’m just helping church volunteers think of new interesting patterns to try instead of getting stuck doing the same patterns all the time :)
