      In meditation you don't stop your thoughts , you just dont attach to them .
      Thought keep coming, or should I rephrase.... THOUGHTS KEEP GOING from your mind, just like bubbles escaping the aerated drink when you open the bottle. Thoughts dont come, thoughts are going away from your mind ( just like the bubbles) . You are the one who is holding on to it, let go ... dont cling to it, dont attach to it, watch them arise and watch them go

    A neuroscientist and psychologist here with over 29 years of experience at university, sorry to this spy fellow, but he needs revision. Meditation absolutely helps those with anxiety and stress. It's more of a coping mechanism and yes, it can distract people, but this enables them to realign the nervous system Fight-or-Flight sympathetic response so that they can think rationally through the situation. It also bolsters resilience for future episodes of anxious thoughts. Wim Hoff breathing, cold therapy, and breathe work also help to bolster resilience and reduce anxious thoughts. The three breath vagal releasing procedure alone reduces anxiety and nervous system responding. Geeze, I don't like this guy becoming the guru for all things. Folks, he's agency and and never left.

  • @user-ef4df8xp8p
    @user-ef4df8xp8p Před 12 dny +109

    This guy is confusing meditation techniques. He doesn't have much idea of meditation. There are several different meditation techniques. But two major ones are: 1. Mindfulness(vipassana)/Zen meditation and 2. Breathing meditation(anapanasatti).
    He is talking about "Breathing meditation" in which one sees the event/distration and then, get back to the breathing. But Mindfulness meditation is NOT just avoiding 'event/distraction'. It is about being 'aware' of the distration and stay with it as long as it lasts without being judgmental about it.
    It means, mindfulness meditation or Zen meditation teaches one to not react to the event; rather stay with it, and learn and grow from the event. This is a seriously powerful technique to reduce anxiety, fear and gain new insight as well as peace of mind.
    Please, don't claim something if you don't understand it in depth....

    • @sanekabc
      @sanekabc Před 12 dny +3

      It is difficult to find a consistent definition of what mindful practice is. Your explanation is the best one I have heard regarding the distinction between mindfulness practice and watching your breath which are usually explained as the same thing. Also, mindfulness is usually described as being mindful of what you are doing, like washing the dishes etc. and returning to the activity if thoughts or feelings arise which is the same as watching the breath. Also, we need to make a distinction between the state of mindfulness and the practice of mindfulness. Most of the practices out there are a form of thought/emotional bypassing as Andrew asserts here.

    • @user-ef4df8xp8p
      @user-ef4df8xp8p Před 12 dny +2

      @@sanekabc you are right. A part of Mindfulness practice actually is about being 'aware'(of the present moment/activities).....
      Another imporatant practice of "mindfulness" meditation is(and even breathing/focus meditaion) is being aware of both 'focused' attention and diffused attention. We have two different attention types working at any moment. One is focused(conscious) another is like the peripheral one(unconscious).....Practicing both is important...
      One important thing is, there are 10 different stages of Meditation. And breathing meditation is in stage 2,3....then, the meditator, after successfully completing those stages, get to Mindfulness practice...Stage 4,5 and so on...and then, to the more deeper ones.....
      Buddha actually started his meditation practice with 'breathing'/focus meditation under the supervision of his teachers/gurus. But then, he realized breathing meditation is not gonna take him to liberation, and therefore, he abandoned breathing meditation. He then discovered Mindfulness meditation.....and adopted it. Mindfulness meditation is Buddha's greate discovery. Breathing meditation was in practice in India long before Buddha started meditation practice.

    • @laurakassama9092
      @laurakassama9092 Před 11 dny +2

      Usually, meditation techniques can be classified as either insight (vipassana) or concentration (samadhi). Mindfulness can be applied to either type of practice. Full absorption into a concentration practice lacks mindfulness because the mind is absorbed into the object of meditation. Andrew Bustamante is correct that a lot of the apps and practices in the mainstream are useless for overcoming strong emotions or rewriting the thinking process. Concentration practices are good for bypassing other experiences or negative thoughts. They are not a long term solution for change but they can be helpful for creating more calm in one’s life.

Trying to find some hold in logic explanations makes it worse. If your logic says everything is good but you don't feel like that, you try to find another logic. This game will never end. This is only solvable on the emotional side. Where is love fear will go away. And focus on body sensations.
      Use the mind to control the body (like slow breathing) and then the mind will be controled by the body. Relax your body and surrender that there is no logic solution, only love can help.

    Meditation is really effective against fear and anxiety, but I think I know what he is trying to say - as most of his other advice seems pretty sound.
    Regular meditation, and in particular mindfulness practices, is precisely the thing that increases your ability to do the "traffic cop"-thing and all the other things he's talking about. I suspect that many people will not be able to practice any of the solutions he's offering without a regular meditation practice in place first.
    However, in the moment when you are triggered by something, there is absolutely the possibility of "bypassing" - which would be to not use your mindfulness to meet, observe and hold space for the uncomfortable emotions as they come up in order to do the things you need to do - but to sit down and simply do a meditation on visualizing waves or something in order to suppress the emotions and feel calm in your body to escape them.
    Now in principle even this doesn't necessarily need to be harmful, if you from that calm place manage to take the next step of actually meeting the emotions and go into the "exposure therapy" part (then it can be a helpful way to avoid panicking), but if you never do that second part you will of course never be free of the patterns as they will simply wait for the next time to arise.
    I suspect this guy has seen a lot of people getting stuck in step 1 so he is very eager to push them into step 2, and perhaps forgetting that for many people step 1 is necessary in order to get to step 2.

    @johnnywlittle Před 3 hodinami

    For my ref->
    ---------------------------
    Summary and Breakdown of Key Points:
    Understanding Fear and Anxiety:
    Fear and anxiety are whole-brain responses involving both the left (logical) and right (emotional) hemispheres of the brain. Both hemispheres receive sensory inputs simultaneously, but the right hemisphere, which processes information through biases and assumptions, reacts faster than the logical left hemisphere.
    Left vs. Right Brain Processing:
    The right brain processes information quickly based on emotions and biases, while the left brain takes longer as it relies on rational thought and systematic problem-solving. This difference in processing speed often leads to immediate feelings of fear or anxiety before the logical brain can provide a rational perspective.
    Physiological Response:
    The right brain’s quicker response results in immediate physical symptoms of fear or anxiety (e.g., increased heart rate, sweating). The left brain eventually provides a rational explanation, which can lead to a sense of relief once it catches up.
    Coping Strategies:
    Delay Conclusion: Allow a few seconds of discomfort before reaching a conclusion to give the logical brain time to process the information and provide a rational counter to the emotional response.
    Stress Inoculation and Exposure Therapy: Practice taking small risks regularly to increase risk tolerance and improve the ability to process anxiety and fear rationally.
    Avoid Meditation as a Crutch: Mainstream meditation techniques can serve as distractions rather than solutions, preventing genuine improvement in handling anxiety.
    Journaling:
    Journaling helps by engaging both hemispheres of the brain. Recording moments of anxiety and the logical counterarguments can provide insights and reduce irrational fears over time. This practice helps identify patterns and provides evidence to counteract future anxiety.
    Decision-Making Under Stress:
    Recognize that most decisions do not require immediate action. Allowing time for the logical brain to process information can lead to better decision-making. Understand that the sense of urgency is often false, and taking a moment to breathe and think can reduce stress.
    Key Takeaways:
    Fear and anxiety stem from the brain's simultaneous processing of sensory inputs, with the emotional brain reacting faster than the logical brain.
    Giving yourself time to let the logical brain catch up can help mitigate irrational fears.
    Practicing stress inoculation and exposure therapy, rather than relying on meditation, can build resilience against anxiety.
    Journaling can document and rationalize anxious moments, providing a record that helps manage future anxiety.
    Most decisions can wait, allowing time for a balanced, less stressful response.

    Great advice! Something I’d like to add is that meditation practices like do nothing meditation and Vipashyana are actually bringing you closer to experience. In order to do these practices it’s easier if you have a good concentration. To get better concentration you can use a visualization as an object. So even the visualization could be helpful with bringing you closer to experience eventually.

    Learn a panic attack breathing method. Breathing in fully in 2 quick breaths (filling the solar plexus area) and breathing out slowly (purse lips) for longer than the you breathed in. 2 in 7 out. Activates the parasympathetic and eliminates fear/ anxiety instantly. Also lowers blood pressure if used for 3 minutes or more.
    Meditation can be used to find out who you truly are and this eliminates fear / anxiety in your life. It can slow down your negative reactions naturally until they don’t even happen anymore. Leads to a loving non-judgmental peaceful perspective.

      I first acknowledge the creator of the universe then I ask for forgiveness and forgive others & release them. Then I petition for holy Spirit to come in. That's when I go to town! Praying OFFENSIVELY using words in scripture, promises of God and Psalms to slay the demons! I pray against spiritual attacks like depression, financial delay or obstacles. God says we humans have the power to bless and perform miracles just like Christ. So I do that.

      @@ministryofhealingfarm thanks! That’s very important to keep a spiritual mindset because I believe and not only because I believe but humans throughout history have have sought meaning in spiritual terms because I believe and not only I believe but because we think eternally as humans that praying will address God or whatever there is out there that people believe in and he will help us. It’s a fact that prayer does work and when praying or in meditation that we reset and find the answers. I really do believe there is some spiritual force and multiple forces battling over our minds. I see it every day and even have a lot of unusual things like a premonition or prophecy happen and it’s increasing in intensity as we live in the time period Jesus talked about with the two world wars and people being afraid of the rising of the sea etc. government doesn’t understand this because government role is to take Gods place as what happened after the Garden of Eden story. So it will work because the force that wants us to succeed is allowing us to be tested so that not we worked for it but that we fought for righteousness within ourselves. God Bless and I hope to see your prayers answered and continue fighting the fine fight!

      I saw a podcast with a neurologist that said the brain and body experiences traumatic memories the same as when they happen. In the book The Body Keeps Score the author says that antidepressants like Prozac (SSRIs) didn’t work with war veterans who had PTSD. I would look into psychedelic treatments. Watch videos on veterans discussing Ibogaine for addiction or ayahuasca for purging trauma. Maybe even ketamine treatment or a hero dose of psilocybin. But I wouldn’t recommend doing any of these things on your own without the help of a specialist or professional. Set, setting & mindset are vitally important for these entheogens. I hope you find the help you need and heal. 🙏🏼

    It appears that Andrew is only familiar with the visualization method and a diluted mindfulness method of meditation, which - when practiced correctly - are both highly beneficial for going beyond emotion and the executive mind up to the brain wave frequencies of gamma, high gamma and lambda. As a matter of fact, stress inoculation and exposure therapy are beginner-levels of meditation in the Shaolin Zen and Dzogchen traditions, with the qualifier that the mentioned traditions must be learnt from someone properly trained in them. Meditation is not about escape. It is about becoming more present, yet grounded, alert and functional.
    Andrew's explanation of Journaling, however, is spot on. Well-said in that regard.

    Regular meditation practice develops the skills he describing, namely witnessing ability, ie to remain calm and just observe but not react to the thoughts and feelings that arise in you so that you can use the best parts of the left and right brain To more consciously choose your course of action.
    I’m not sure if he’s saying meditation doesn’t work or wouldn’t be practical in the heat of the moment but the skills he’s describing meditation helps develop I find this an inconsistent point of view.

    Great information. Robert Greene has a great book that explains this. "The Laws of Human Nature" and LTC Grossman also has a great book that goes deep called "On Combat". In response 😂to those saying that he is against meditation. Words are important. If you are listening to what he is saying. You will understand that he is saying meditation works for a different purpose. He is trying to explain how to overcome fear, anxiety & stress quickly. I understand meditation from a Buddhist perspective and I meditate for a different purpose. Mingure Rinpoche talks about controlling the monkey mind through meditation etc. I do agree that meditation practitioners do use meditation as a crutch. Believing they must clear the mind or that they will find bliss and happiness through meditation. Agreed you can improve your life through meditation. He then explains that what would be better would be journaling. I'd say if you are trying to process and understand your fears, anxiety & stress so that you can overcome them. Therapists will tell you that he is correct,and that it is a very great method to do this. I think many can read the title and immediately jump to agreement or defense of a position and will miss the what he is saying.

    Meditation on a basic or "lateral level"? Left side of the brain is faster for chess players once rhe Comprehensive learning complete. Chess is a 2 brain academic sport that is still under-rated on a cognitive level. Men primarily use the logical side while controlling their emotions like a poker player. Thus the "poker-fsce" phrase in order to distract your opponent from "reading your hand by your "comfort face" or excited winning look.
