The church rector, Reverend Mairt Hanley, hoped by highlighting the issue that it would deter people from doing anything similar in the future.
“It’s very disturbing for people,” he said. “We have not had trouble with people messing with the graves before and it does not sit well with people. It’s the level of disrespect that was upsetting in the parish. It’s one thing sitting in the graveyard drinking a can; it’s another thing interfering with the grave.”
The vault is the resting place of generations of a local family and is still in use.
The heavy iron gate leading to the steps of the vault was unhinged, while the vault door was forced.
The incident happened on a night in late August and the parish waited until after the door was repaired before highlighting it.
“I think people should have respect for public places and there should be respect for special public places, anything that is a memorial, church or burial ground is a special place,” said Rev Hanley.
“Please do not interfere with the graves, it’s not wise, it’s not respectful and it upsets people,” he added.
Gardaí have been notified and are keeping an eye on the area.
Rev Hanley also felt it was fortunate that no-one was injured, as the gate to the vault was extremely heavy and it would have also taken a great deal of force to break the door.
Rev Hanley did not understand the motive for breaking in.
There are generally few issues with graveyards in the Baltinglass group of parishes, which includes St Mary’s. There are very occasionally instances of people drinking cans, while Rev Hanley added there would be the odd gamer playing the augmented reality game Pokemon Go searching for Pokemon in graveyards.

The same way they trashed Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans. It was so bad, they closed it off to visitors to clean it up. Homeless people would spend the night there and they defaced tombs and left trash all over the place. The cemetery is a historic tourist draw for the city.

There is NO excuse that can justify violating the last testing place of a family. I am sorry for the relatives of this family for the hurt that I am sure they feel at such desecration.
After the revulsion that I felt for such an act it was heartwarming to see the gravestone that was erected to the servant of a family in gratitude for their years of devotion. This is another GLORIOUS church. Thank you for the video.

I agree with you Sue about the desecration of that vault it's something I will never understand sadly this happens in England too It's probably teens but why? I dread to think how they are being brought up!. I am sorry you have both been ill I haven't been on top form myself. Great footage sue I wonder if there are stairs under that slab separate from the tomb under the church it's strange 🤔 people breaking in to a vault should carry a 30 year prison sentence and they should be made to repair the damage at there own cost

Be well Sue! I love your videos! It shows the similarity of your old and ancient graves are the same as any other I have seen around the world! People honor and love their relatives who have passed, in most cases, and they treat the remains with respect.
The under stairs is a crypt, and the hole broke open over the years, but it looks like ignorant morons were using the hole as a trash receptacle for their empty bottles and cans. And they probably didn't know there were remains under the stairs.
Not a fitting place to party, but some people have started sleeping in such areas, due to the lack of money for shelter and drugs/alcohol...
It is bad enough when they are ignorant of their actions, but to deliberately try to open and desecrate the remains, disgusting...
Hey Sue! in some of the tombs, the entry way is covered in soil to prevent easy access. In other tombs, there is a special slab that can be moved to give access into the inside. I love those where it is just a solitary monument with the names on it, yet you see no burial or other headstones, as the remains are in a room under the monument, and the entrance is covered in soil, preventing unauthorized access.

These young lads vandalising cemeteries and graveyards should be made do community service and be made do a course that will educate them in history, ancestry etc.

Such disrespect is, indeed, appalling! I can't understand the want to party and drink in such a sacred place. When I worked in funeral service, we had our outdoor mausoleums broken into, with a total of 23 caskets disturbed. All done to steal jewelry and valuables. Absolutely awful!

I think the bones belong to those who were interred under that big slab in front of the gate Sue! There may be a crypt in that spot, ending under the stairs. graveyards becomes very bad. In South Africa you can't even visit your families Graves anymore because they would rob everything you have with you even your car. They vandalise the Graves. They also party in the graveyards. It's so heartbreaking 💔 😢 😞 😪 😔

Hi Sue and GV great visit to our ancestors here. Lichen can be removed with a bleach/ vinegar solution and it is environmentally friendly, versus using trisodium phosphate which is not .

This seems to occur everywhere. I don't know if these violators are showing their false bravado in disturbing remains, or they're just plain mean and disrespectful. Where I live there are very strict laws regarding desecration. Damage to grave sites or monuments exceeding $1000 American dollars is considered a felony. The problem is catching them. I think they should have to do hard labor in the cemetery cleaning up grass or any other form of supervised repair or cleanup.
I agree too, let them get into those abandoned graveyards and clear them up

Very Beautiful church! Very sad, that scum would want to destroy something so beautiful and innocent as a very old church. When I see an old church like that, I can not help but to think of all the lives and memories that have passed inside those walls, along with amazing history. It is hard to believe that people these days think nothing of ruining sacred ground or disturbing the dead. What has happened to young people that they think nothing is off limits. Drinking and trashing graveyards and the like is completely disrespectful. It looked like that area under the gate with the cans and bottles in it is being used as a trash can. Would be kind of fun to have someone down there waiting and when one of those punks go to put something down there just grab them. There is a trick-or-treat bowl that grabs at the hands of the little goblins, maybe a set up like that would work. Thanks for another interesting vid.

It wouldn't take much to funnel p gravel into that void. After the garbage is fished out. Looks like the water washed out the earth under the steps. Then the contents of the grave under the stone got dumped into the hole. They are gonna have to bag for it one day or the stairs could collapse. Yet again maintenance and money. Makes one wonder where all the maintenance funds that were collected went. If you look into it in the past. I was also thinking there was a scrap market for some led coffins. I remember they were stealing the lead off roofs. If it's nasty some human being has done it.

Oddball question.. The Kennedy's would they be related to the president in the United States that was assassinated? If so I wonder why family wouldn't go and take care of the burial? Me personally I'd love to have my burial area fixed and taken care of.

Yes, I'd prefer to see community service being used to clear the old graveyards, I actually think they'd gain from it and maybe make better choices going forward

Sadly it seems the cemeteries might need to consider closed circuit cameras all around the old church structures pointing out. It seems this vandalism is not that unusual. These disrespectful people should be held responsible ..somehow.
