LeBron's Overrated Defense Exposed - 2014 NBA Finals

  • LeBron James puts up one of the worst defensive performances of all time in the 2014 NBA Finals. He makes James Harden look like Dennis Rodman. He was able to get away with poor defense against Indiana in the 2014 ECF but the Spurs beautiful team ball made him pay. Letting people blow by him with ease, leaving shooters wide open, just very poor defense.
Now to analyze LeBron's 2014 Finals in full context. LeBron was only productive for the first 2 games of the series. In the final 3 games, LeBron didn't show up on offense or defense, and was completely outplayed by 13 ppg Kawhi Leonard across the board. The majority of LeBron's stats over the last 3 games were padded in blowout situations (being down 15+). LeBron by no means was "carrying" his team in these Finals. The majority of LeBron's stats over the last 3 games were padded in blowout situations (being down 15+). LeBron by no means was "carrying" his team in these Finals. And he got outplayed by Kawhi Leonard over the last 3 games
    Games 3-4-5
Lebron scored 51 of his 81 points (63%) being down 15+
Leonard scored 27 of his 71 points (38%) being up 15+
Leonard outscored Lebron 44-30 in non-blowout situations
    Leonard 23.7 ppg on 69%
    LeBron 27.0 ppg on 55%
    (Leonard 14% more efficient)
And again, Lebron stats were heavily padded in garbage time, in non blowout situations Leonard outscored him
    Leonard 9.3 rpg
    LeBron 7.7 rpg
    Leonard 2.0 spg
    LeBron 1.7 spg
    Leonard 2.0 bpg
    LeBron 0.7 bpg
Leonard 2.3 apg with 1.7 TOpg
LeBron 4.7 apg with 3.7 TOpg
Leonard had a slightly better ast:TO ratio
Through games 3-4-5, Leonard scored much more efficiently (and more in non blowout situations) and outrebounded, outstole, and outblocked Lebron with a better ast:TO ratio
    Game 3
Lebron had 14 points and 0 TO in first quarter, then 8 points and 7 TOs for the last 3 quarters. LeBron had 22-5-7-5 with 7 TOs on 64%, Wade had 22-4-2-2 with 5 TOs on 67%.
But over the last 3 quarters, LeBron had 8 points and 7 TOs to Wade's 20 points and 3 TOs. The Heat cut the lead from 15 to 9 without LeBron, after Wade subbed in for him, from the 5:00 to 1:00 mark of the 3rd quarter, but even with that help LeBron still lost.
    Game 4
Lebron had 9 points in first half and the Heat were blown out by 19 at halftime. He padded his stats from there, and did not score on Leonard in the first half.
    Game 5
Lebron had 1 FG in 2nd quarter (2:30 mark) to bring the Heat within 5. Then he did not score again until the Heat were down 21 with 4:40 in the 3rd. He shot 1-6 against Leonard in this game according to ESPN "MVP Leonard Does it All," and according to that same article Leonard shot 65% on LeBron's overrated defense for the series - espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/pos...
Leonard clearly outplayed Lebron over the final 3 games, even with Lebron padding his stats, and Lebron failed to score consistently until after his teams were getting blown out. LeBron did not play well in the 2014 Finals after Game 2, he only padded his stats. LeBron's 2014 Finals was a repeat of the 2011 Finals after Game 2, the only differences being that LeBron's teammates disappeared along with him, and LeBron padded his stats to save face. So any notion that LeBron had an "amazing" series, and still lost because of his teammates is false. LeBron failed his team over the Final 3 games, and that's why he lost. He did not contribute offensively or defensively. The Spurs did have great offensive execution in this series, but their great offensive was largely successful due to the poor defensive leadership of LeBron, who got exposed by Kawhi Leonard - allowing Leonard to shoot 65% when guarded by LeBron's vastly overrated defense

+protectyaneck__ Everyone in recent times(with the exceptions of Leonard and Paul Pierce) is an overrated defender. What makes Lebron so good on defense is his athleticism. Plenty of times he pulls a Harden and makes a mistake, but his speed makes up for his failures. He's so quick that he can normally run the defender back down or cut them off before they get to the basket. I will agree that Lebron is pretty much a 100% offensive machine with INCREDIBLE athleticism. His defense could use some work, but I wouldn't be too worried about that at his age(You truly shouldn't be having him play 100% on both ends anymore).

Kawhi was hitting a ton of catch and shoot shot from the Spurs ball movement, and LeBron was playing a lot of help defense; so if he runs over to contest test Kawhi’s playoff run, and Kawhi makes it it’s not his fault. And sure, Kawhi beat him off the dribble a few times, but for the most part he was playing good defense in the series besides game 5 and a few plays here and there.

This is where you just can't believe people compare LBJ to Jordan - LBJ plays poor position defense even, not just poor on the ball defense. I won't even get into his poor body language. Jordan played meticulously every second and rarely made any mistakes on both sides of the ball. And he elevated his game in these moments - he never shrank like LBJ here. Champions, even pass first ones, need to attack and finish by themselves when it's time to take over.
For him not try to take advantage of a mismatch against Parker is just poor fundamental basketball. For a guy his size, he should abuse defenders going to the hole. I don't understand why he doesn't take advantage of it when the rules are so in his favor to do so. It's like this year's finals against GSW - he waited until game 4 to get physical and drive the hole and now he's down 3-1. It seems like he waits for wins to happen instead of creating them himself.

Actual fans of the defensive side of basketball know even when he was was an all defensive team member, he was no all time great in one of the weakest eras of defense ever. In the 90s , some of the NBA's best defenders couldn't even make an all-defensive team like Kidd, Artest. Yet aged defenders like Payton were still consistent members in the 2000s. People need to learn basketball. Lebron was consistently in defensive teams (Yes even those Cav teams you fanboys say he had no help on) where guys like Battier,Wade, Ziggy, Bosh could take the pressure off of key matchups. Jordan was literally an old man who was injury-prone and came and the Wizards were a top defensive team. The dude was shutting down Marion,Spree,Paul Pierce,Peja pushing 40! And Lebron is supposed to be better than this man because he can stuff the stats? No one dominated both sides of the game like Jordan. The dude was the GOAT no contest.

You are wrong! I saw this series. LBJ played good defense, trying to cover several opponents. Problem was that nobody could stop the Spurs. It's a team game. LBJ defended Tony Parker, then Boris Diaw made plays. Then, they switched and Parker just waltzed down the lane. Note that these "lowlights" are against several players. LBJ is bashed for not being able to shut down Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, and Green? He's supposed to do that while being dominant offensively? Some people have unreasonably high standards for LBJ. I have never heard anyone bash MJ for not being able to defend power forwards like Alonzo Morning. You know why? He was never asked and expected to do that. I saw the defensive frustration in LBJ's eyes defensively with his team's performance in this series. Instead of bashing LBJ's so called poor defense, salute the Spurs magical team prowess on offense. One of the best in history. That would be a more valid description. Also, don't ever bash one player for lack of successful team defense. That's just wrong. If LBJs defense was so bad, he'd end up on the bench.

Jordan was one of the greatest defenders in the history of the NBA. Let me educate you, son.
Third all-time steals leader. Four of the top five are point guards. It's easy to steal the ball when you match up with the opposing team's ball handler. Jordan did it as a two-guard.
One of only two players (the other being Scottie Pippen) to have a season of 200 steals and 100 blocks. Jordan is the only person to ever do it twice.
The only player in NBA history to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
All-time leading blocker as a guard.
Lead the NBA in steals three seasons, a record only recently beaten by Chris Paul, another point guard.
NBA record eight steals in a HALF.
Most steals in an NBA Finals with 14 in five games against the Lakers in '91.
      All-Defensive First Team nine times.
Jordan was an absolute juggernaut defensively, which, in conjunction with his offensive capabilities, is why he is the greatest basketball player who ever dribbled a ball.

defense is terrible in the nba and its been bad for a long time. very few players are elite defenders and teams even less.

mel bias the NBA has very good defensive players. the problem is the league limiting to about 50-70% of their actual ability through rule changes and touch fouls

There are Regular season players and they are Playoff players. Playoff players win, lock down on D and play complete team play, and win. Regular season players looks great, have tons of highlights, score lots of points but cant win when it counts. They are not complete players.

I am curious if after this series Lebron leaked to the press he was injured all year like he did this year?

Everyone complained when this guy posted a video of Kevin Durant scoring on LBJ easily....."Oh it's KD, no one can stop him" and "yeah it's not LeBron's fault" .....what's the excuse now? Who on the Spurs is comparable to Durant?!

There should be no excuse for an old man like Manu blowing by a Lebron James in his PRIME, for an uncontested layup. Sloppy ass defense!

Disclosure: I'm not a lbj fan. Not even the slightest.
But I can definitely say that he is a great defender and two-way player. He can produce the numbers in any given night and create mismatch all over the board. He isn't an amazing defender. He's solid enough to be a great defender.
But watching this entire series from start to finish, they were just outplayed, outmatched, and out coached. And carrying a team 82 games + playoffs takes it toll. Even Steph Curry ran out of gas and legs in the finals last year.
