  • Our version of the Indiana Star block needs four fabrics: a light (white), a medium (red), a dark (blue) and an accent (gray). Watch the video to see how we made it!
Join us as we make a once in a lifetime quilt to get ready for the Semi-quincentennial! (250 years!)
We started this multi year (January 2022 through February 2026) Block of the Month to celebrate the Semi-quincentennial of the USA which will happen in 2026! One block a month for four+ years will make this quilt a manageable project for a once in a lifetime celebration for the United States! 250 years might seem young to our friends from all over the world but we're going to celebrate!
It's going to be a great scrappy block quilt! I am making my blocks in Red, White, and Blue but you can use any color combination you want. The color combinations that I've seen posted on our Facebook group, The Quilted Forest Friends, are AWESOME!! I am so looking forward to seeing your finished blocks. Join our Facebook Group and share the blocks you've made!
All of the videos in this series may be found in our "Celebrate the States" playlist at this link:
    • Celebrate the States! ...
    The block will measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" (12" x 12" finished in the quilt.)
For this month's block, you'll need four fabrics:
    1 light square, 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
    4 light squares, 3" x 3"
    2 accent squares, 5" x 5"
    4 accent squares, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
    4 medium squares, 3" x 3"
    2 dark squares, 5" x 5"
    4 dark squares, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
Watch the video for all the cutting and piecing instructions.
We have traveled through Indiana on our way to visit our son who was stationed in North Carolina while he was in the Army. One of the places on my list to visit in Indiana when I get a chance to visit the "Crossroads of America" is the capitol of Indiana - Indianapolis. The Indiana Dunes sounds like a place for adventure! The Indianapolis Museum of Art sounds amazing. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site also make the list of places I'd love to see in person! I'm always up for learning when I'm out and about visiting new places.

All of the "Celebrating the States" blocks will be rotary cut. These blocks will be presented in video form only and will come out the last week of the month on our CZcams channel. Share this with your quilting friends and make the blocks together!
Join our group on Facebook, The Quilted Forest Friends, and we will have posts where you can share the blocks you have made and be inspired by blocks others have made! We are loving all the blocks you've posted so far! Here's a link to the group:

This quilt will be 56 blocks set with 1" sashing, 7 blocks across and 8 blocks down. It will measure 92" x 105". If borders are wanted, a 3" border will make the quilt 98" x 111". If you add a 6" border, it will measure 104" x 117". If no border is wanted, just sew the blocks together for a quilt that will measure 84" x 96". I am starting this quilt now because it has been a goal of mine (since the Bi-centennial when I was a young girl) to make a quilt for this very special, once in a lifetime celebration! #celebratethestates #rotarycutter
If you don't want a quilt that is as large as listed, split the blocks for the 50 states into half and put 25 states on the front and 25 states on the back and make it a two-sided quilt. If you use a 1" sashing, 5 blocks across and 5 blocks down and add a 3" border , it would be about 72" x 72".

I really enjoy your blocks. They are interesting but not tedious. They are approachable and challenging in a good way. You are a great teacher/communicator. ❤

You can get them in sets of multiple sizes. That helps keep the cost per ruler down somewhat

I actually really liked your "boo boo" block, loved the contrast! But both are gorgeous 😊

I made the Ohio star and the Montana star, and incorporated them into a wall hanging that featured an appliqued anvil and a hammer block, as a welcome home present for our blacksmithing son who is currently serving in the Army in Europe. I love the way you present the blocks, super easy to follow and great results❤

I am really enjoying this block of the month. Will you have finishing information and a layout? I want to make this but I have to buy all of the fabric. I’m a new quilter so I don’t have a stash yet. Thank you for sharing these beautiful blocks and for sharing your talent with us. Hugs from Minnesota.❤️

We have quite a bit of information in the description of all these videos. Especially the very first one, Iowa. That first video also goes into more detail on what you might need.
