  • Our version of the Rhode Island maple leaf block needs three fabrics: a light (white), a medium (red), and a dark (blue). Watch the video to see how we made it!
Join us as we make a once in a lifetime quilt to get ready for the Semi-quincentennial! (250 years!)
We started this multi year (January 2022 through February 2026) Block of the Month to celebrate the Semi-quincentennial of the USA which will happen in 2026! One block a month for four+ years will make this quilt a manageable project for a once in a lifetime celebration for the United States! 250 years might seem young to our friends from all over the world but we're going to celebrate!
It's going to be a great scrappy block quilt! I am making my blocks in Red, White, and Blue but you can use any color combination you want. The color combinations that I've seen posted on our Facebook group, The Quilted Forest Friends, are AWESOME!! I am so looking forward to seeing your finished blocks. Join our Facebook Group and share the blocks you've made!
All of the videos in this series may be found in our "Celebrate the States" playlist at this link:
    • Celebrate the States! ...
    The block will measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" (12" x 12" finished in the quilt.)
For this month's block, you'll need three fabrics:
    8 light rectangles, 1 3/4" x 3"
    4 light squares, 1 3/4" x 1 3/4
    4 light rectangles, 2" x 4 1/4"
    4 light rectangles, 2" x 5 3/4"
    4 medium rectangles, 2 1/2" x 5 1/2"
    1 dark square, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
    24 dark squares, 1 3/4" x 1 3/4"
    4 dark rectangles, 1 3/4" x 3"
Watch the video for all the cutting and piecing instructions.
We have yet to experience the pleasure of traveling through Rhode Island! It has been on my list of places to visit since I was a elementary student and picked the state for a report! I think I liked the idea of it being the smallest state! The "Ocean State" has 400+ miles of coastline which I imagine offers many amazing sun rises and beautiful views! The Museums and Gilded Age Mansions will be my top spots to visit, I love learning the history of any place that I visit and since Rhode Island is one of the original 13 Colonies, it has a long and rich history!

All of the "Celebrating the States" blocks will be rotary cut. These blocks will be presented in video form only and will come out the last week of the month on our CZcams channel. Share this with your quilting friends and make the blocks together!
Join our group on Facebook, The Quilted Forest Friends, and we will have posts where you can share the blocks you have made and be inspired by blocks others have made! We are loving all the blocks you've posted so far! Here's a link to the group:

This quilt will be 56 blocks set with 1" sashing, 7 blocks across and 8 blocks down. It will measure 92" x 105". If borders are wanted, a 3" border will make the quilt 98" x 111". If you add a 6" border, it will measure 104" x 117". If no border is wanted, just sew the blocks together for a quilt that will measure 84" x 96". I am starting this quilt now because it has been a goal of mine (since the Bi-centennial when I was a young girl) to make a quilt for this very special, once in a lifetime celebration! #celebratethestates #rotarycutter
If you don't want a quilt that is as large as listed, split the blocks for the 50 states into half and put 25 states on the front and 25 states on the back and make it a two-sided quilt. If you use a 1" sashing, 5 blocks across and 5 blocks down and add a 3" border , it would be about 72" x 72".

Just finished this beautiful block. The whole time I was working on it, I was thinking "This isn't going to work. I'm going to have to make this again." Ok, maybe I was saying that aloud, talking to myself. Then all at once -- there it was! I didn't do too badly after all. Thanks for always doing such clear instructions. I always learn something from each video.

I love that you keep and use the bonus squares! I have made tiny quilts from them or joined them end to end and used them as a border for the quilt I am making.

I live in RI and had not seen this series! So glad I did. I’ll be sure to share it with both my RI guilds. Both guilds have members from either CT or MA depending in where in the state they are! We are “Little Rhody” after all!

Hope you and your family are okay. Saw your recent weather in Iowa but I don’t know much about where you are in relation to the recent weather. 🙏 everything is safe and no one was injured. I live on the coast of SC where wee have had hurricanes. So I know what water and wind can do
    Love this series!!! ❤️

This is a beautiful block. But, I had a lot of trouble drawing the four outside corners. I need to work this out on paper (before I cut fabric and start sewing). Thank you.
