- Fifth project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! The third Saturday in September is "National Sew a Jelly Roll Day" and Moda Fabrics had this great pattern to use with a Jelly Roll. I make one quilt with a Jolly Good Jelly Roll. I make a second "scrappy" quilt using some leftover strips from my 2 1/2" strip bucket! What works for a Jelly Roll will also work for leftovers. The Moda website has a great variety of wonderful patterns that you can download and print at home.
Here's the link to the pattern "Half Step" from Moda Fabrics:

Stay to the end to see the alternate color way using my leftover strips in pastel colors. There is also an update on the scrap bucket situation and how that is looking!
This quilt uses about 9 yards of fabric when you include the strips, background, binding, and backing.
If you want to make a larger quilt, double the requirements for the quilt top. Use all the strips in the Jelly Rolls to make 80 blocks, set 8 x 10 to make an 80" x 100" finished quilt top.
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!

A tip I have learned about nesting seams is that if you turn the seam on top toward the presser foot it will be “pushed” against the seam on the bottom so will be nested perfectly.
What a great quilt project! I love the safety pin tip. 😊 Thanks for sharing this project.
You are so welcome!
These are so inspiring! Thank you!
I am appreciating each of the 2 1/2” scrappy strips videos. I am saving them to refer back to them. So glad I found your channel.

Both of those are so cute! Now I want to make Christmas quilts for everyone.
I really like that!!
This has to be one of the best, most helpful videos I’ve ever seen! Thanks do much!
Awesome, thank you!
Cute quilts
I really like both colorways.
Awesome! In this one video you have taught me so many new short cuts that I’m so excited to try. Your instructions make this so easy! Thank you! I am a retired teacher and didn’t start quilting until I retired. You get the Golden Apple for being a fantastic teacher!
Awesome! Thank you!
Very pleasant to listen to. Looks like a fun project
Great tutorial with lots of great tips. I use small gold safety pins and only put the first one in the fabric and link the others in a chain.
That's a great idea!
These are adorable! Just downloaded the pattern. Love the coloring guide. Think that will help me not get confused. But I always say the mistakes let you know it's hand made. I have a quilt that my grandmother made me where one of the legs of the windmill is attached wrong. Over 60 years old, and that is my favorite block!
Wonderful!
Both are just beautiful. I love the way the colors pop on the pastel quilt.
Thank you so much!
So lovely!
I especially love the pastel strips…so pretty ❤ Nice job!
Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous!
Loved both quilts 🩷
Fabulous tutorial! Great tips. Flipping and making a stack of the background strips as you go is a new one for me, and I’ll certainly do that in the future. I’ll also use your safety pin tip to keep my rows organized and in the right direction.
Thank you, and stay well!

I just started this last night for my granddaughters Dec. 24th bday! Hope to have the top ready to show her that day. Marathon sewing after a full days work, but I love it. Thanks so much for your tips!
A wonderful tutorial! Filled with lovely Snippets of Usefulness-the hand-over-hand for separating bigger blocks; the safety-pin “row numbering” method. I so enjoyed this, and learned a lot.
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much!
Great pattern and the tutorial was clear and easy to follow.
Love those Christmas fabrics! And I can drop some blocks to make this quilt just a little smaller and add borders for our charity quilts for kids from small to around 18 years! We never know the ages so we try to make quilts for all sizes - nit bed quilts but comfort quilts!!!!
I made this from your tutorial. Thank you 😊 I even finished from start to quilt and I washed it as well. Yeah 🎉🎉
Wonderful!
