  • What are the complete card meanings? Discussing similarities and differences between the Rider Waite Smith and Marseille. Do we know the older meanings? Do you know of other cards that are often described too one-dimensional?
Adding the following: Jodorowsky said about Judgement, Le Juge Ment. With that phonetic approach to the title of the card he mentioned: no human judgement/ reasoning is of value here.
Decks mentioned: Camoin-Jodorowsky Tarot de Marseille, Rider Waite Smith Tarot deck

OMG you hit the nail on the head with the Moon - I've always disliked the negative view of this card and see it rather as the lamp which illuminates what is hidden. It often comes up for me to refer to spiritual guidance, otherworldly influences, dreams etc, or to say that things will come to light in their own time, and then I will understand more fully. It represents for me the hidden, magical and mysterious things in life, not necessarily negative at all. I also interpret the Lovers as choice too! (I'm a TdM fan, so this is maybe why.)

I love this. As someone who lives in Phoenix, Arizona in the US (it gets VERY hot most of the year), I am WELL aware of the possible negative aspects of the Sun, and to me it sometimes reads as a very overbearing and overwhelming energy depending on context and placement. I also sometimes read it quite neutrally as things being out in the open for all to see; nothing is hidden. This can be good or bad or neutral.
I agree that the Moon is not always negative, and I generally don't read it as such...to me it has more to do with mystery, intuition/instincts, secrets and taboos, dreams (including the good kind), taking a rest, and relief from the "Sun" or something we find overbearing (again, that desert climate perspective).
Justice and the Wheel of Fortune are cards that I see as companion cards. To me, Justice is a card about Karma, cause and effect, and consequence of actions or choices made. The Wheel of Fortune I actually see as destiny or luck (good or bad), outside forces...things that are happening outside of our control that we have to decide how to respond or react to, as well as cycles or seasons of life. So I see the Wheel as external; the opportunity to choose our karma regarding the hand one has been or is being dealt, and Justice as internal; the karma we have chosen, or the hand we've dealt or are dealing for ourselves. Admittedly, it is due to this interpretation (as well as astrological and numerological reasons) that I personally prefer Justice as XI instead of VIII...to me it makes perfect sense to come AFTER the Wheel in the succession of the Major Arcana.
I recently read an alternative meaning for the Tower that has really shifted my view, which is a sudden change that will shift your life in a way where it will never be the same, but this can be positive things like getting married, or having your first kid, or leaving your job to follow a dream...these things are still in most cases scary undertakings that involve risking or dismantling our pride, and shake us up in our core, but they are by no means negative in most cases, or at the very least provide opportunities to learn and grow! The Tower has always been, and continues to be my favorite card of the Major Arcana. Initially for the art when I first started learning, but as a person who tends to struggle with unfruitful pride myself, it's an archetype that I feel connected to on a karmic, soul-level.

🔮I love and agree with your card interpretations. I am studying Marseille and the open read now. The Justice card, I agree, is often about finding "justification" for our own beliefs and actions; an internal balancing act of deciding if we are "justifiable" or not in our own personal views, actions and beliefs; the Sword representing the need to embrace mental clarity in our thought and communications, internally and externally, cutting out what no longer serves us to keep those scales balanced; a spiritual and perpetual inner "house cleaning" so to speak. Great video: it gave me a lot to think about in this lifelong journey of the study of Tarot. Thank you 🙏

What an interesting interpretation of the lovers Card!!! I haven’t heard that one before!! I’ve been aware of the man choosing between two women though and the card being called “The 2 Paths” which is how it is in some Spanish based decks… in my opinion, while studying the tarot (which I still do), I feel like The Hanged Man is entirely misinterpreted too, in the sense that originally he is being hung upside down as a form of public punishment - now whether he is “guilty” of that punishment is a matter not known, in a sense there are consequences for our actions and sometimes we need to rethink/analyze our choices and this is how I see that particular card whereas a lot of people i see interpreting it as self-sacrifice, which can be as aspect of the card’s meaning but it can go deje than that… It’s probably one of the most psychologically in-depth cards in the deck next to the Moon. And I also see the sun in a 2-fold way, especially for those of us who live in extremely hot climates where the sun can be way too hot and we get burned 😘

The idea of Arcane VI as 'choice' does seem to be an 18-19th French occultist conceit, trying to conflate Pythagorean symbolism ( of the Greek letter Y as choice between virtue and vice, sacred and profane love) with the Tarot 'Amoreaux'.
But in the older Italian decks (TdM derived from an earlier Milanese Tarocchi) do show the nuptial couple, with Eros above without implication of choice...

    @LucisFerre1 Před 4 lety +4

    Great video.
The hero's journey doesn't really technically start until the hermit card. Until then, or until the lovers card, the fool is merely ignorant and unlearned traversing the first 7 card "lower vibration" realm of materialism and temporal power here on earth.
You missed the Magician, where he's often viewed as a wizard cerimonial magician drawing down cosmic energy with ceremonial magick tools on his table, however in the marseille deck, he's a trickster with cups and balls and three dice on his table. Those are common tools for cheating people out of their money. The three dice game has odds that are counterintuitive and heavily in favor of the game presenter.
You're spot on with the lovers card. The first seven cards, (not counting the fool) is about will to power as Carl Jung put it, Eros being asleep, and being transitioned on a spiritual journey above temporal power aquisition is Eros waking up. Jung described this dual aspect of Eros as being love vs his Shadow side. And the chariot represents the fool's journey into the upper realm of the latter 14 cards, concerning a spiritual awakening.
The idea that the moon is "bad" is, I think, a common christian interpretation. The moon as a bad influence, causing "lunacy" dates back thousands of years and a misunderstanding of the moon's influence on "evil" spirits. Actually, no celestial body CAN give an evil influence since the heavens are "perfect" and non-corrupt. (i.e. the "wanderers" move in an unchanging and perfect cycles). The mideval way of looking at it, evil = corruption, and the "silver" light of the moon fights corruption rather than triggering it. Silver fights evil, hence silver not reflecting the false trickster images of evil spirits. It's actually the new moon that allows spirit to move about at night unabated. In a more modern sense, silver fights corruption because silver is anti-bacterial. It kills pathogens, so you can keep fresh water in a silver container for a very long time. Before germ theory, this was attributed to silver's spiritual powers to fight all forms of corruption. Silver is nearly perfect in an alchemical sense, and perfection is anti-corruption.
You are spot-on regarding the Justice card. Justice is an existential virtue, not merely the legal system. Plato considered it the highest virtue, and it can be argued that the three layers of 7 cards of the major arcana represent Plato's three part soul, which he described as THE CHARIOT, i.e. the charioteer with a white horse and a black horse. One horse being Eros and the other being Thymos.
Judgement is an old Renaissance term for resurection of the dead into Jesus' new world, what modern christian protestants call rapture. You're right, it's not about judging, it's about rebirth.
I didn't know that in the marseille deck, "13" doesn't have a name. That's fascinating.
The devil card is a *GOOD* card, as it's when we become AWARE of our bindings which we are often unconscious of.
It's odd that people think of the Tower as bad and Wheel of Fortune as good, when both means a good or bad change. Both merely mean change, which could be good or bad in retrospect. The Wheel of Fortune is more about internal change, whereas the Tower is about external sudden change, but neither are inherently good or bad.

I really loved the way you interpreted L'AMOUREUX. I am studying Marseille, and I've come to interpret it as "making a choice", obviously, but especially choosing between virtue / vice (represented by lust here). But lately I've liked to think that instead of choosing between virtue and vice, maybe we can find a way to marry them in ourselves. Maybe L'AMOUREUX is trying to make them become friends or something ^^. But the "becoming adult" and living your mother and childhoood for your wife and adulthood is a nice look to the choice theme of this card. I like it! Thank you :)

A couple times it started showing up randomly, and both times were extremely traumatic events that still affect me to this day.

I love it how informative the video is!!! Few days ago I spent (maybe too much) time on wondering what tarot deck do I want to buy. First I considered the super fancy-kitchy-looking Witches deck, then the Waite-Deck, to, at the end, order the Thoth and Le Tarot de Marseille. I have never considered to order decks depicting "solely" numbers in the minor arcana, also considered Marseille kind of ugly and old-fashioned, and as already said, opted for cards containing as much ready-drawn-interpretation as possible. I also used to watch tarot videos trying to "predict your summer/may, june etc.", when then I rediscovered the videos of A. Jodorovsky on CZcams and I then I saw again how beautiful the Tarot de Marseille is. Also the Thoth seems to me touching way more "the origin" than the Waite-Deck and reading Crowley is super informative and pleasurable, but at the beginning I was kind of scared of the devil vibes, I mean, so many creatures with horns in the deck can make you scared.
I really loved your video. I think that each point actually makes you really realize, that Tarot is not about predicting the future and about pretty pictures, but about the inner work and the load of symbolism they serve in each picture.
    Thank You.

Finally someone who questions conventions and explores out side of the box. I’ve seen many videos out there and can’t even finish watching them cos I didn’t see anything new nor an intelligent articulation not even amongst native English speakers. You, on the other hand, sound natural and genuine in putting down your thoughts. I like the casual videos without all those CZcams cliché.
And just like you I don’t settle for the standard meanings of the cards, I agree about The Sun, the big star, which has its other side proportional to its positive side, it can also be devastating. The Sun can also be exalted ego, negative proud, egocentrism, arrogance, It can indicate when someone is dazzled and blind by own ego.

I love this! Always like to hear about different perspectives and interpretations of the cards. I do believe that what cards represent also depends on the individual reading and a person you are reading for and their situation.
I love that you pointed out that there is more to The Empress than fertility and motherly nature, that she also is the ruler a master of her own domain. The Devil card can actually be trully empowering card. It is the card of "with great power come vreat responsibility". You have the power to do anything, you have been given this but then it is on you, how you are going to use it. The devil is like winning a lottery- there is a kor if great things one could do with that money for the highest good of everyonr, for the collective OR they could use it to buy shiny things and spend it all in a year and be left with less rhan before you won.

I guess I can understand the negative side to it: it's dark, there can be fear of the unknown.. at the times the cards were first drawn, electricity wasn't invented yet, so the night time must have been quite a bit darker than we know it today. Everything is slightly distorted in the dark with just enough light to see... the mind takes over and makes a monster out of a strangely shaped bush in your street. But it isn't my first meaning for the card. It's my favourite card and she's beautiful

The Devil for me mainly represents the Animal nature, the natural instincts, which we are subject to as long as we are incarnate (the rope/chains which bind us the plinth of Earth on which the Devil stands), and which we must learn to manage appropriately - we cannot just crush or deny it, nor on the other hand allow it to conquer and consume us. I remember reading this interpretation in the excellent book accompanying the Mythic Tarot, and it is one which has stuck for me. He/She is for me an incarnation of the horned deities of the ancient world, such as Pan, who ruled over the herds, the wild places, the caves and the grottoes etc. These deities were respected and revered as much as the deities of the city state and civilization, since it was recognized that the wilderness cannot simply be denied or erased, nor can the wild nature of man, since we need such for our survival. It is also a source of power, a locus where we can connect with the Anima Mundi. I've had the Devil crop up numerous times to refer to the spirit within wild Nature, and how it can actually be a very healing presence with profound wisdom. I see the card as quite Shamanic and Animistic actually - it definitely has those vibes for me!

La Maison-Dieu was called La Casa del Diavolo (House of Devil), La Casa del Danato (House of the Doomed) or La Casa di Plutone (house of Pluto/Hades, god of the underworld) in early lists of tarot cards in 1500s Italy. Sometimes it was called Inferno (Hell), Fuoco (Fire) and La Sagitta or La Setta (literally it means Arrow/Bolt. It was used for thunderbolt, but it was also used to mean problem, trap, attack, danger in most latin languages). These names were not seen as a good thing in late medieval/early renaissance, so the name was changed to La Maison-Dieu in french. A Maison-Dieu was a kind of public hospital/hostel, where poor, old or sick people take refugee. It was also an orphanage, where babies were abandoned by their mothers. La Maison-Dieu was considered less problematic than a translation like "La Maison du Diable" or "La Maison du Damnee"

Interesting evaluation, personally I don’t like to get caught up in the whole gender attachments but the empress as venus energy and the emperor as mars I can understand. Nothing has ever been more dangerous and effective of overthrowing empires as the empress energy, kingdoms have been overthrown by this intoxicating fertile goddess, time and time again. It is victory through giving away to victory.

I agree about the negative moon. Also, I have lately wondered if the strange moon face with weird rays ( like sun rays) behind it, is actually a full moon eclipsing the sun behind it. In this way it could be temporary change, a completely predictable happening in our lives but causing things to be strangely dark and different. At the same time are we being drawn by tides within us like the lobster? The lobster must shed its shell in order to grow but it knows how to do this by instinct. For us, it is not always so easy. What are we feeling? our reason seems to be less than sufficient for the task and we need to reach into the pool of intuition and ask the lobster how to proceed.?

Steven dos Santos Thank you. The one in the video is a good one, by Camoin-jodorowsky. But my favourite one (is very different) is Trionfi della luna (paradoxical). There are some beauties out there. Hope this helped

You took a small burden from My shoulders because justice apealed like a very intense card to me, nos u see it as something useful and positive, the moon card fear may come from ouspensky description of something terrible in the towers looking at him as he goes the path

Only Marseilles Tarot decks are divinatory.Enough with Rider- Waite folly , I donot trust it , owing to its association to Theosophical Society.I am not a reader , I am interested in Astrology , but when I consult a Tarot reader , I stronly insist that he/she brings to the session a Marseilles Tarot deck.I believe that alchemists created that deck , unlike the Rider-Waite impostors.
