6:01 Classic Druaga mistake. The fist version of Mac OS to support PowerPC was actually System 7.1.1. Mac OS 8.5 simply dropped support for 68k machines, with 8.6 cleaning up more of the 68k code. The reason why Mac OS 8.0 didn't boot is because it's not compatible with the New World ROM, as the first one to support the NWR was Mac OS 8.1 (which came with the very first iMac G3, also the first NWR Mac).

I got 9.0.4 running in sheepshaver easily, just switched the rom files and it runs smoothly. And there is a setting in Sheepshaver that allows you to access the files on your main desktop from within Mac OS, really does save a lot of time.

2 years after and im still watching this stuff? ITS FRIGGING HILARIOUS!. sober or high, I love watching you have a cow over a CD not booting on a mac only cos i've been there too many a times tinkering on old macs. Ive said the same stuff at the machine you did. always a subscriber.
Copy protection well in action even in the '90s: the Apple installation software will detect if the CD is read-only.
The fix is modifying the Preferences so that the disk image is loaded as a CD. It's in INI format, so you can just replace the "disk" for the image path with "cdrom".

Windows has always counted file sizes in Kilobytes. And you cannot just expect any old program to work with any old version of windows.

qemu's speed is essential dog poop but it can emulate 10.5 atleast

Umm, when 8.5 was released in 1998, there surely were bigger HDD:s in use than 80MB. My Pentium Pro computer from 1996 had a 2.1GB HDD already.
Righto, I suppose 8.5 came out much later than I thought. We had a massive 80mb drive on a system 7.5 IIsi.

FYI system 7.5 and above are 68k and PPC compatible after 8.1 it was PPC only
Carboy7 It was. Painfully slow (but beautiful). For most Macs, 7.7.6 was the most speedy and customisable OS for 64k you could expect, and that's another beauty!

I have spent probably 8 hours at this point trying to figure out how Sheepshaver and Basilisk work. All I want to do is play super munchers and math blaster. I feel your frustration.
Enjoyed this one as I've only ever played with MacOS 7 in BasiliskII. BTW I suspect MacOS 8 would've had trouble with an 80 GB drive in any case since the biggest drive from that era was about 10 GB.

Protip: You can use a dmg created on OSX directly as a disk image for sheepshaver/basilisk if you specify the hfs filing system. This has the added benefit of handling the resource/data forks correctly when putting warez on it.

I used to use Basilisk as an emulator. I even got an external USB CD-RW drive working on an emulated quadra running Toast. It let you attach real Mac SCSI devices to your PC.

You have to go into file properties (right click, select properties). Then you have to tick the Read-only box. The iso isn’t read-only so the Mac doesn’t like it, ticking the box will make it read-only so the Mac likes it again. Googling the error would tell you that you have to make it read-only. This would save you all that time trying to find a new image, finding a real cd to make a iso of.
It's supposed to be like: "Bro, do you even SheepShavered?" or "Bro, are you a SheepShaver?"

I believe you had to click the down arrow at the right end of the CD-ROM section and select the ISO there, and the hard disk under Volumes. Then it would probably have worked right away =)
Yeah, I think how I did it was I used actual OEM CDs of the MacOS to boot from. Anything added to the disk image list is thought of as a hard drive.

Mediafour MacDrive for Windows. it's a driver that enables windows to read and write on mac formated disks.
there is also paragon hfs+, but i never used it. also there is open source stuff, but you need to read carefully what those can do and if they are compatible with your windows version.

My install of SheepShaver has 9.0.4 and I don't remember how I got it to work.
I'm trying to move a file from within Sheepshaver into my Shared folder, but when I do, it says that the file/folder is in use and it doesn't move or copy it over. It's not in use. How do I move files from Sheepshaver back to OSX?

Sorry for all caps. But that was painful haha. I also noticed you made the disk way smaller than intended because you mistook MB for GB. But I figured it wouldn't be a problem since it was 40 by default anyway.
Setting the ROMs and .iso’s as Read Only was probably a major point in the Read Me file which Druaga1 spent all of his ”Five seconds of research“ not bothering to read! Seems pretty important!

If you just wanted to use Kid Pix whenever you want, why didn't you just download the Windows XP version?
You must lock the Mac OS image file to boot from it. Locking it makes the installer think your booting from CD
I have Mac OS 9.0.4 running on my SheepShaver setup. 4 GB image, 512 MB of RAM, full screen. I have an option to switch resolutions.

I was able to get System 7 working very easily. Just click and thing and install it and it just... worked. However, SheepShaver doesn't work unless I reboot my Windows machine first. I don't know how or why, but at least it works.
I can never seem to get this working. Always something about a ROM error.
I know it's an old comment, but just Google old world rom or new world rom and you can find one that works with SheepShaver.

guys, i'm planning to buy a "new" laptop for college stuff. i'm thinking about old macbooks acually. i've never owned an apple product, but i'm kinda interested in older macbooks. 2006/7/8. is it a good idea? would it be enough for basic stuff like spreadsheets, excel, presentations, web stuff, youtube in 1080p (too much?). note, i'm from central europe, so prices may vary, but i've seen 15" macbooks pro (core 2 duo, ati radeon x1600, so 2008 i guess?) for about 150-200€. or maybe something like thinkpad? x60? laptops are not my thing, especially old ones. thanks for any help
If it's for college, go for portability and battery. A second hand Microsoft Surface 2 is good, and if you really need Mac OS X, make it a Hackintosh.

But there is a PowerPC native version of Mac OS 8.0, in fact, there is a lot more PowerPC native code in Mac OS 8. They were making it clear that they have officially transitioned three years into this platform.

Windows 10 in the form of an upgrade on a windows 7 system is not at all like a very new system with a fresh windows 10 install. I have 2 windows 10 systems, one upgrade, one new build. The new build is so stupidly fast that it makes the other system look multiple generations older even though it is only 1 gen back.

Oh boy, I have another one. Have you ever tried to install gmplib from source without a package manager? You need to compile about 159 libraries for yourself in pretty much the right order.
