I'm an old guy. In the darkroom I listen to Queen, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Mozart, etc. And yes, I sing along. My darkroom is in the basement so I can get away with things like that without the music police being called.
sounds like a good time and a nice space for you to listen to whatever! of course you gotta sing to that kind of music :) i'm not that old but I listen to all those :) especially love Queen!!
The first time I developed film in my bathroom at home i listened to Frank Turner so now it’s become a tradition
nice! - I searched for him on CZcams and love the first lyrics to this song: czcams.com/video/ne3DOUoPQig/video.html
Ooh, the range of shades on that XX 250 cine film is gorgeous! I home develop too as I only shoot black & white, am on a tight budget and like brewing up plant based developers. My favourite is rosemary but in the summer growing season I use pruned tomato leaves. No music or podcasts for me... I develop in silence, mostly because of dreadful brain fog but also because I need to be able to hear the agitation ticks on the Massive Dev app.
Good point there on the ticks! Super interesting about the plant developers!! How did you find those or get into them? I've got caffenol on my list to try soon but also would like to explore other ones like you mentioned
Love XX! Such a great portrait film. I agree with you regards those plastic film canisters! I find the best way to get leaders out is with an old 6 inch length of film that you moisten the end inch of and then poke it into the canister, wind the canister and it will 'stick' to the film leader inside and pull your length of film into the canister once its gone in a bit slowly pull your piece out and the leader will come with it. (that's probably a really crap explanation - google will probably show a better explanation :) ) oh can developing is addictive and it rocks. Trying film photography lead to me building my own darkroom in my shed haha.
oh yes, I have heard of this technique!! that was a good explanation though, so thank you! hahaha yessss darkroom shed for the win :) that's something i'd love to have, well, maybe something that would be warm in the winter, cool in the summer, but yes :)
For regular b&w film (or cine) you might try Flic Film's ecofriendly Black&White&Green, it uses ascorbic acid (i.e. vitamin C) and hydroquinone in triethanolamine, all safe for sewage systems, and very long shelf life when opened. In my hands it gives similar results to HC. It's slower, and very thick so tricky at first to pour.
Thanks for the shout!
Nice! I really like the photos, and u are cool!
thanks!! youre cool too for watching :)
XX is one of my favorite films too. Haven't even made it to the D96 developer yet. It looks great with many others. Great photos, thank you for putting them up for us all to see!
Thank you!! What do you use to develop it?
My testing has been more anecdotal than formal so there's still work to be done in figuring out technique. Most of my usage has been on 120 format.
That said, I've had excellent results with Adox FX-39, the negatives feel clean and clear, easy to print in the darkroom.
I've tried FA-1027 on one roll, but without any reference point for data, my guess for timing was off. That came out very thin but looks like it was going to be good. :) (FA-1027 is absolutely fantastic with HP-5!)
My limited experience using HC-110 B on XX has resulted in usable negatives that feel a little heavy, if that makes sense. Images are great, they just take more fiddling to print. Could've been my technique. HC-110 is becoming my default giving excellent, reliable results with most film. Lately though I've been using it at dilution H, which is just B watered down to half strength. Extending development time brings more detail and makes timing more forgiving.
Now that you've asked, I'm curious about learning how to get the best from XX, it's something special!
@davidottman9501 nothing wrong with anecdotal 😊 I've heard good things about the FX39 from Adox, love Adox, and Hc110 (in general), would be interesting to see the difference in using the stock D96 developers/cine versus 1:1 and if the further dilution results in a less grainy image. I love XX slightly overexposed (personal pref), for my last two rolls next, I'm going to try the 1:1 with the longer dev times. Bellini d96 is also a treat and that's stock. Its fun to try to figure out what works best, but yeah makes sense what you mentioned with the negatives and HC110.
I just bought two 100 feet bulk rolls of XX-film. That will last me a while 😅- I think I get 18 rolls of 36 frame roll from 100 feet. I usually develop with D76. Love the smooth contrasty look. After I finish shooting my last cinestill-XX 36frame rolls I will reuse the cartridges with my bulk rolls - and have correct dx codes so i can also shoot with my compact camera Mju-II.
that's a great set up!! bulk rolling saves even more :) and great to have the same DX codes!
charles mingus is what i end up listening to when i develop and print.
i use a laser cooking thermometer when i develop. My water is just a tad softer than a brick so i have to use an at home water distiller.
You might be able to cut your rinse from 7 to 3. I've been following pictorial planet's suggestion of ilford agitation with alkali fixers and it's worked well for six months.
I'm thinking of trying d96 on some of the orwo freestyle just started branding as arista.
entertaining vid thanks.
thanks for watching!! 3 v 7 sounds a lot nicer!! haha yeah hard water is something else, but I've never heard of an at home water distiller, will have to look that up, is it expensive? I think we have a water softener filter here. and will check out charles mingus!!
Favorite darkroom jams: film photography podcast ! And mr. Ballen spooky stories youtube. Grwat video! Maybe someday ill try if i wanna float beyond hc-110
awesome! and thank you :) yeah hc-110 is so popular, but if you ever want to try it's there haha
They use those plastic one because you can use it for bulk load some film. They even sell a tool to open the plastic canister you really love those canister!
But you right is impossible to retrieve the film 😅 so the tool they sell is the best
Oh wicked!! I didn't realize they sold one, will definitely have to be checking this out :) someone else also reminded me to stop a little early when rewinding the film haha but awesome they made a tool for that!
I have heard (haven't tried it yet) that if you take the label off of the plastic recyclable canisters, you can open them up pretty easily. Once that's done, they can be reloaded and reused.
ohhh will be trying that next time, thanks Randy!!
Lately I’ve been finding myself listening to Carl Cox while in the darkroom.
neat - looked it up and it's very energizing!
Did you get new glasses?
Loving that intro!
thanks!! wanted to make it fun and no they are slowly wearing away the color hahaha
Great film and some fine developing handiwork. Simples
Many thanks!
I hear you on plastic canisters. I had no success of retrieving film from them. When shooting in mechanical cameras I just leave a bit of film when rewinding so I don't need to use the film retriever.
oh yes, that's the way to go! i always forget to do that lol
Podcasts are great to listen to in the darkroom!
for sure! got a favorite?
Hmmmm -- I have not developed film myself (at home in the bathroom) since I was shooting photos for my high school yearbook! You definitely make it look simple, easy and do-able.... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
will you be heading back to welsh wales? great work as ever.
Not at present!! Back in the US to stay 😊
Hey Molly, a little tip. Add ice cubes and water in a water bath (small tub) to cool down and bring to temp. 😀
Thanks John! I was thinking about that haha but I had to get rid of the snow anyways so it was a good interruption! but that's a great tip :)
@@Eclectachrome Remove snow from driveway, add to chems, water/snow bath...❄
@@john_murch 🤣 true true, next time!!
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are good duo for negative film developing. For printing in darkroom Bach and Vivaldi are suitable composers, at least for me.
sounds like good combinations!
Nice result. I haven’t jumped into home development, yet. If I do I see myself sticking to developing black & white film. As color (at least for me) would be tricky.
thanks! yeah the nice thing about bw is not having to heat up and maintain that temp, usually 21C is room temp ish or if its too cold or too warm, the dev times could be adjusted too. is it the temp thing that would be tricky for you?
@@Eclectachrome the temp thing, the adjusting it in a photo editing software, getting the colors just right would drive me bananas! LOL
@Minolta_Gal OH yeah, the colors!! With capture one that is a nightmare haha yep totally get that!!
I listen to a lot of Stereolab and Godspeed You! Black Emperor when printing/developing.
Ooo will check those out 😊
I usually catch up on podcasts when developing. If I'm up to date, then I'll probably default to Brian Eno :)
oh lovely, Brian Eno is really nice to listen to - and of course podcasts, yes! any favorites?
Flic Film are good people, and while they're based in Alberta, Canada, the town doesn't have a Tim Hortons (so does it even count)? I've used their Classic MQ (D-76 Clone), and Black/White & Green both excellent options. And I want to try their MQ-19 this year (Kodak D-19 Clone). Great images!
Not in my experience. I live in Alberta (45 minutes away from the facility) and I will not buy from them again. Awful customer service and many products are half-assed.
thanks Alex! what?!! No Tim Hortons?? Is that even Canada?? haha oh nice - look forward to your thoughts on those :)
which ones have you tried?
For B&W, I shoot 120 film (will someone bring back 220!) and I'm a Canadian so I'm required to check them out. 😅 Why do you not use a water stop bath?
haha of course! I think you can use a water stop bath too, I usually do this with 510 pyro, I used the vinegar one since I had it there :)
I’ve been able to eventually get the leader out of the cartridges but it takes six times as long and for that reason I only buy their films as a last resort. The plastic cartridges are also a pain to break apart. It is too bad because I like Flic film as a company.
yeah love the company - It's good to know you can eventually get it though, I give up after about 4-5 tries lol maybe i can try another method though like some people wet the end of another leader and use that to get it out...
Anita Baker example: czcams.com/video/Oz-b86LZ21c/video.html , or Jose Gonzalez ( czcams.com/video/ik_BQYbbZ5U/video.html ) Mellow with a couple of dashes of care.
Jose Gonzalez is awesome, need to check out Anita, thanks!!!
:) The link is to a song called "Caught Up in the Rapture. Slightly fitting?@@Eclectachrome
haha if we're talking caught up in the rapture of the magic of the darkroom it is!! @@lupindeweir
Oh yeah -- your shots are great companions to The Old Camera Guy's smalltown Ohio shots....
Thanks!! Yeah always enjoy his images and places photographed 😊
@@EclectachromeGreat minds think alike lol. Love your images on one of my all time favorite stocks!
Aha! So while waiting for the solution to cool you are out plowing driveways? That's one way to occupy your time and make a little cash on the side!!! 🤣
Haha well just mine for now!! But yeah great way to pass the time in snowy NH winter!
Great videos!! Thanks for keep the film life alive.
Also, the canisters are reusable they sell a tool on flic film website. Here a link to the video for the tool it’s called the flic pic. czcams.com/users/shortsD0AGdXzgxss?si=i1Bz7FpMdeaiEclN
Keep up the great videos. Hope this helps.
thanks! thanks for watching!! oh will check that out - for some reason the link isn't working for me now but it could just be a glitch, will try again later :)
