This sounds like a jukebox that started by itself in an abandoned dance hall that was once a very popular place in the 50s. Haunting... Still there to remind people but its not what it was. But that's one thing I like about this.
Ah man, I’ve watched this video so many times over so many years and it popped up again in my feed. I was shocked when I came on down to the comments section. RIP, Dex. Hope you’re rocking with the greats.
this was the original video in Dexter's backyard that changed it all. Chris Smith on Drums. If only you thought to take your drums and put them in your backyard and play a song and record it. Wonder who was behind the camera? Joyce DeWitt? lol
is there a freaking title to this song or the only thing we got is this no named 59 second of awsomeness that will forever be remembered by the name of "you know this clip on youtube where Dexter plays in front of the "moz"? no not that one at night in front of a house, that's baby blue. Do you have a computer? well when your GF will be done playing angry birds just type flat duo jets in youtube... the title? it's just early 80s... fuck that I'll send you the link"
I grew up with Dex and know that old shed. We stayed drunk and somehow managed to get by. This is before Griz came into the band as a standup bass, Tone Mayer my roommate. Crow, the drummer, lived in a old car and sometimes in my closet when came home drunk with Griz. Those were the days. We listened to a lot of The Ventures, Elvis and Ray Charles. Dex liked The Cramps a lot and The Bad Checks, a local band, who coincidentally opened for The Dead Kennedy's in a roller skating rink in Raleigh back in '85 maybe. We knew we were the original scene with this old Link Wray redux music that was a N.Carolina late '50's legend. We also figured that even though the band never took off the ground after the David Letterman show, they were legendary and would always be revered as the original punk rockabilly band. I also think they knew, meaning Dex, that they would definitely be imitated. I believe he put his dark spin on his material to make it his music. He chose classic and timelessly intense instead of appealing to the pop culture. Meanwhile, Athen's music scene created R.E.M. and The B52's. Chapel Hill was missed over in the '80's music revival, unless you lived there. What a great town that was. I live in Amsterdam now, but even here reminds me of home sometimes. thanks for posting, took me back in time! Cheers!
@@jtukbb Agree 100%. Just always irritating how people never know about the influences, but rather the ones who make a big pop on mainstream culture ie. The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc etc etc. Just the way the world works.
jtukbb7 blanketface Everyone Rips from everyone, it’s how you like things, did I rip off my dads music taste, did I rip off some of my dad and mother’s behaviours because surprise I kinda act like them? Everyone copy’s stuff they like, but that’s how complexity happens, just variations in a system
@astar334 Thats because Dexter never had the oppurtunity to sell out or else he would have but in the same respect if you think that Jack sold out you should probably reevaluate every band you've ever listened to because Jack has always been the same since the beginning of the WHITE STRIPES.
Yeah but Dexter pisses all over Jack i'm afraid. I haven't listened to the stripes since i found the duo jets. Its like drinking Jack Daniels all your life, but then you find a 30 year old scotch. You just don't look at the Jack Daniels in the same way again.
@whitestripebuzz You really don't know how hard is the life with one testicle or with ill ones. So don't make such silly jokes. Mine are okay, but I have friends with that kind of problems. It's really unhappy life...
Rest in peace, Dex. You were a BEAST! Today, 16 February 2024, is a sad day indeed.
Amen🤘
Rest in peace Dex
an inspiration to many greats and many to come
*Rest in peace 😉 👍
😢😢❤
Dex was like my alternative music big brother. RIP.

This is the greatest 58 seconds of human history. Rest easy Dex.
Ah man, I’ve watched this video so many times over so many years and it popped up again in my feed. I was shocked when I came on down to the comments section. RIP, Dex. Hope you’re rocking with the greats.
gosh I wish the full video was somewhere, such an amazing performance
The Athens soundtrack ... I had it on tape cassette... The Flat Duo Jets blow everyone away..
Except BBQ Killers
People keep saying they want the full performance. Go to The Cutting Edge - Flat Deo Jets- and you can see the entire interview and song.
Imagine walking through the woods and hearing this echoing in the distance O.O
perfect!
I would cry.
That was every weekend for us 80's Chapel Hill kids...
every once in a while, when I'm lucky, I find things like this, out of the blue; This year, it was fucking discovering flat duo jets
They were pretty great. Saw them a couple of times. They played often.
. Way back long ago...
Lucky enough to see them live back in 1990. Dex had on pink slacks. Absolutely rocking show at Einstein A Go Go in Jacksonville
I think I could watch this all day. And today my bf serenaded me with this version. So fucking cool. Rest in power Dex.
One of the greatest musical performances ever.

this was the original video in Dexter's backyard that changed it all.
Chris Smith on Drums. If only you thought to take your drums and put them in your backyard and play a song and record it.

One of the Best things I have ever ......I will take it to my Grave.
What is this song called?
"Girl On My Mind". It's a Buddy Holly cover.

purty
@gregrocks90046 1985 to be exactly :)
this band has a great sound can we stop talking about that other band now?
What's the song they're performing called?
T B girl on my mind originally by buddy holly
Buddy Holly
Jack never sold out, he's just a lot more successful and he doesn't always stick to one sound...
@whitestripebuzz its worth it dude!
Name of song?
It's a Buddy Holly song called: Girl On My Mind.
What are the chords ?????
Jack White ripped just about his entire sound and image off The Flat Duo Jets (who came way before). Dexter Romweber is in his 50's.
Yes he did. but jack is still a better songwriter

Yes. Shrewd move to get a hot girl drummer to shoot him into pop mediocrity.

Dat fuckin reverb... So punk, god.
I would say this is early 90's, not early 80's.
1984
watch?v=0wzbBjchGU4 ..closest thing I could find. It starts at 1:33 into the song.
I know you might have been sarcastic when you wrote that, But no; Dexter Romweber's still alive.
cover of Buddy Holly's Girl on my Mind..
and an excellent but completely unfindable one... very frustrating.

Dexter is a much better singer and guitarist but Jack's longevity and songwriting puts him ahead I reckon
Just found out he's dead.😭😭😭😭
Saw them open for The Cramps in 1990 I hat to say it but they stole the show that night.
