- One of several segments featuring The Flat Duo Jets from the 1987 film "Athens, GA: Inside/Out". I highly recommend watching the whole film!
Also, check out "We Fun: Atlanta, GA: Inside/Out", which is about the Atlanta music scene in 2009 (available on Prime as of early 2021). - Hudba
Song at 2:33 is "I Found My Love - The Dukes of Rhythm"
I have been trying to find the name of this song for years. Thank you so much for solving this mystery.

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!
Thank you so much. Means a lot.
Came back to this tonight because it was my introduction to this legendary group. Rest in peace Dex. Thanks for the art.
me too man.
💔💔💔
I will remember the first time I saw The Flat Duo Jets as long as I live. I was living in Memphis. I tore the poster off the telephone pole at Pop Tunes on the east side of Memphis after the show, and I have it to this day. That show was sometime in the early 1990s... It is devastating to hear the Dex is no longer with us. He was so musical. That VOICE. And he drew inspiration from Chopin. Everything in the world just gets worse. RIP Dex.😪
So sad to hear that Dexter passed away yesterday. He will be vividly remembered by everyone in Chapel Hill NC. RIP Dex!
Rest in peace, Dexter. You definitely "disturbed the peace" in a beautiful way in your time here. Thank you for al the grooves and love. May you be reunited with all your siblings and mother.
❤
Flat Duo Jets were the best thing about this movie. I saw them at the Georgia Theatre in Athens in Fall 1990 - great show. RIP Dexter Romweber.
This guy Dexters sings like he’s possessed and plays the guitar like he’s on fire 🔥! Great stuff!
Don't quote me on it but there is a doc pic on Dex and the band and it would appear that he has some psychotic issues. Talks of drugs he's taking to maintain reality. Should be on the tube here.
If I was given one wish to witness one live concert this would be it...RIP Dex....I will cry now.
Very sad news to learn of Dexter's passing. He was is and will always be a true legend. Absolutely awesome. ❤️
Rip Dexter. Your influence will echo through rock n roll forever.
This is the greatest thing on the internet!!
Rest easy Dex... the world of Rock'n Roll owes you for being all the things it is supposed to be...
those were the days folks, from Baton Rouge to Tuscaloosa to Nashville to Athens to JAckson to Asheville - the southeast rocked underground back then
the ferosity of that guitar playing is just...shivers
RIP Dexter. 55. Geez. You were so authentic. Love u forever. 💔🎸
RIP Dexter. What a musical force! This has to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Raw and just rawkin!
Greatest of all time! Saw them many times...we played shows with them out on the road...what a rush to be out in the middle of nowhere playing a show to jo one...but playing with this band made all the empty seats worthwhile! RIP brother!
Rest in Peace Dexter…you were an inspiration to some of us and maybe had no idea…your LEGEND will live on in the hearts of those who love life and those who love music 🎶
Rest in peace 🙏
1:18 Must have been freezing!! Dexter looks like a dragon blowing smoke
+Shane Fell yah!
Minus 10 with the windchill that night or so I heard. No idea how he kept on playing with his hands exposed to such cold.
it could be 212 degrees outside and Mr Romweber would have the same stage presence.
Austin Lucas rock n roll my man, rock n roll lets to possess powers out of this world
Have seen these guys Multiple times (4)...the Music scene in Athens Georgia in the Eighties was atmospheric, count myself so lucky...all kinds of students loved it, and we were very proud to be in a town and school that produced REM
So ahead of their time, glad I got to see Dex and crow together in NYC like 2000
Haha!!! "Fuck this shot let's play a rocker!". Made my day.
I saw them open for the Cramps at Sloss furnace in 1989,great show!
Crow. One of my drumming idols.
Flat Duo was scheduled to play a club in “my” college town, but Dex said there was no way he was going on unless he got a bucket of KFC. A few choice words (and threats) from the owner changed his mind. They were always great live, and loud as fuck!
Yes they were loud for sure. Saw them in about 1988, and my right ear is still ringing
Goddamn son!!! They were rockin the fuck out on that porch!!
Cold night, hot guitar. Smokin'.
Great stuff. I lived in Athens from 1985 through about 1993. I saw a ton of great bands during that time, including these guys.
I grew up here and graduated high school in 1993. Was young, but you could smell the "special-ness" as David Byrne might have it.
Nice 👌
Did you ever see neutral milk hotel?
I lived there from '86 through '93.... Lotta good bands... Fun!
And played a blazing 2 hour gig after frat house from what I read somewhere. Thanks FDJ. RIP DEX, THANKS
"We believe in cheap equipment." :)
I can't fathom how many times I've watched this Flat Duo Jets footage. This was filmed early in 1986 and the first time I ever saw the Flat Duo Jets was at the end of that year in Durham, NC. I had just arrived in NC for college and they played in a very small venue. What I witnessed just made my mind melt. Their energy was off the charts & Dexter was such a force of nature. I was standing just feet away from the band soaking in their whirlwind of sound. The Flat Duo Jets recorded here on the porch of a UGA frat house is the vintage I saw maybe 7 months later. And I hadn't seen this footage until years after I'd first seen the band live - I didn't even know this film existed.
I ended up living in Durham after college and I continued to see Dexter play live - in the Flat Duo Jets then in his various incarnations over the years: as the Dex Romweber Duo, The New Romans, and just Dexter by himself. But I keep coming back to this footage as it never ceases to remind me and amaze me of what it was like when I first set eyes and ears on Dexter & Crow.
RIP Dexter.
that song at 2:35 is one of the most beautiful things ive ever heard
D puts his heart into it
What is the name of that song?
What's the song they are playing with the acoustic guitar?
Dex Romweber is why I own several Silvertone 1448s! They’re amazing guitars for what they are. Sold as a sears catalog guitar, they were remade again a few years ago but just didn’t have the mojo of the originals.
The Energy and the Love for playing it SHINES...it blows me away no matter how many times I watch it.
My favorite band all time
BAr B que Killers, Pylon, and Flat Duo Jets - the emotion that exists in Athens for artistry was and is Truely special
True Rock n Roll full stop, end of discussion!
Not many people now the 80's like this...just great
I saw them at the 9:30 Club in DC (the old one) in 1987. Dexter Romweber was pissed because some of the equipment wasn't working right.
Amazing! i love The Flat Duo Jets! i think it would be nice if there was more material from this era of the band!
It was amazing to see them back then. And I agree. Longer doc film captures some of those days.

It's crazy to me that music this good could come out of the south
Seriously?
Seriously.
I need to learn how to play those licks/chords/whatnot.
It's one of the coolest things I've ever heard..!
I love the John Seawright reading of the first poem Love Tractor ever sang out loud. Meet y'all out by the Egypt Road.
I’m saddened that this comment has but one like. I had but one like to give for this comment.
John Seawright was a real character. I owned a house over near his family church in Franklin county...
Loved the short acoustic bit.
Hey guys, need some help here. What's the song that they sing at 2:33. "You know my love for you makes my life little brighter" I tried to google lyrics, but still couldn't find anything. I reckon it must be some old 50's ballad like Elvis or Gene Vincent maybe. I can't get it out of my head, so any kind of help would be appreciated
Yes!!! Great to see this on youtube again. This is fucking rock and roll.
Thank you for this video. No other musical performance embodies the spirit of rock and roll such as this one. And to think, I would have never known about Flat Duo Jets if it wasn't for the documentary, "Athens, GA Inside/out"
i love them! just saw them in that movie "It Might Get Loud"
Holy smokey.....I will never forget my dear friend Jere telling me about this band before we saw them together in Raleigh...it was such a special night....they were a real inspiration to Jere in the fact that they didn't have shit and were rocking their damn North Carolina asses off!!!!! Shane Duhe
Remember this so well. So engaging.
Lucky enough to catch the FDJ back in the day! Man Dexter rocks!!!
just getting into the flat duo jets. now i feel ive been missing out on so much good music, it sucks cuz there albums are so hard to find
Dextra, dextra read all about it. The Flat Duo Jets got a magical scene. Dextra! dextra!
Balls to the wall and completely bad ass!
White Stripes copped this band big time!!! - esp. the Gothic look. To Jack White's credit he said The Flat Duo Jets had only two members way before them on Charley Rose.
This band was the Real Deal.
i saw them like 5 times in the late 80s early 90s detroit and staches in columbus
What song are they playing on acoustic 2:33? Dont ignore the question like everyone else
cant get over how fucking ace this clip is. its so good it actually hurts.
the original jack white!
Jack White a very cheap imitation.
correction, after going back and listening to the record the first song they play is jet tone boogie off their first album
Does anyone know what that fine song is called played with the mighty fine acoustic guitar?
We lived. We really did.
ahhh! this is do bad ass!! thanks for posting this!
is there by any chance... more? :X
Seriously the reason I play is to get some of that! The DipSticks!
Amen!
The axe man cometh. A thousand times yes.
@HannesGlans The Movie: Athens Georgia Inside Out - Filmed in 1986 - various artists and personalities
@CamPulaski I believe its a 1966 silver tone guitar.
Punk af, blues as hell
@CamPulaski Danelectro (Silvertone branded) 1448. It was a department store guitar back in the 60s, Even now they go for about $400 - Vintage models - But they don't seem bad, Not that I've played one.
RIP
Times are so different now compared to this.
Like John Mellencamp mixed with the Cramps. Awesome.
This is one of my all time favourite videos! Amazing band, really love their sound! Does anyone know the background behind this? Where the gig was where they play 'Crazy Hazy Kisses' and the other song?
+Ewan James It was on the front page of a fraternity, from what I read. It was also -10 degrees (f) with the wind chill, at the time of the shooting.
+Austin Lucas
SAE House. It was in the twenties and I was there. Freshman year. I was not an SAE, nor do I condone becoming an SAE or any other Greek organization. Save the braincells.
Front porch of antebellum house (Cobb house?) in northwest quadrant of Reese and Pulaski St. I think it was a frat house then about 1984-1985. Definitely the coldest party I have ever attended- and I went to a few.
wow that's a silvertone amp in case guitar! i wonder what amp he uses.
Take that Black Keys!
Jack White got "his" entire "style" from the Flat Duo Jets. If you take away Jack White's shtick band color schemes and the female drummer, then he pretty much ripped this band off for all it was worth. Jack gets everything from Dexter, notice how Dexter was an original Blues Goth and Jack White tries to look and dress just like him? He even fakes a Southern accent when he speaks just to sound like this man. That whole minimalist "easy-to-make' and hard working approach that people loved about the White Stripes actually came from this band first and Jack's guitar sound even sounds a bit like Dexter's once you start listening to Flat Duo Jets. I'm not defending the Black Keys since I always knew they're corporate blues rock, but Jack White shouldn't really throw stones if he claims someone "ripped him off" because most of his guitar sound derives from Jimmy Page and the Flat Duo Jets.
Yes, I totally agree, but nothing is new. Ask the Jets where they got their influence and it is the same . The reason Jack White Added Meg was a sign of the times and the whole package with the red and the white and old dead songs re done was a money maker and needed to not only bring back a dead genre but to also bring back a badd ass roots style that spawned such acts as the Black Keys and Gary Clark Jr. and also the Flat Duo had a huge impact on the garage punk scene in the early 90's and into the Pyschobilly age . True Icons and my main insperation
heckfarr Well the band format and the Blues influence had an impact on Jack, even he admits so. But the Jets are more on the Psychobilly side whereas the Stripes were closer to Garage Rock.
So jack is mad at the black keys because he copied fdj first?
Music is not a competition
These two couldn't have found each other by chance. There was something else at work.
R.I.P. Dex.
whats the song they play acoustically after they talk about their cheap equipment
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Одна из тех групп, кто привил мне любовь к музыке десятилетие назад, люблю их, думаю я тут единственный русский)
Rest in peace Dexter.
song at 2:36?
😢RIP Dex
A dive club on Peachtree Street, early 90’s . Dex was sans shirt and played w his back to us the whole night. Unforgettable and gets my feet kickn & hips thrusting to this day . Sigma Nu house UGA maybe?
i beleive the first song is called breakout and is on introducing the flat duo jets
All the show?
R.I.P., Dexter.
The one who disliked this video plays the bass.
what's the first song?
How did you get this footage?
Is there a whole movie of this or?!
I NEED TO HAVE IT, THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME
3:11 crazy hazy kisses ....what amp and effects ? Or just reverb?
amiga cherished500 All he needed to do was to crank it to eleven, man.
No effects dude....just pure badass Silvertone goodness.
The vhs distortion also adds a lot
I enjoyed this movie so much, and one thing I noticed (because it's blatantly obvious) is that the Flat Duo Jets sounded almost nothing like the other Athens bands. Bar-B-Q Killers, Kilkenny Cats, Time Toy, even the B-52s, Love Tractor, and R.E.M. (who were coming up on the Lifes Rich Pageant period) did do some rock, but with a lot of folk, progressive, and dance influences. The Jets were unmistakably rock and roll all through, even rockabilly at times. Whatever happened to them?
Two things can be equally true: 1) These dudes are rad; and 2) these dudes are definitely coked up in the video, lol.
More likely speed. I've actually heard that at the time Athens was known as a place where one could find lots and lots of cheap amphetamines.
Both are an understatement
IDK what it is, maybe crank. But if music historians ever need a poster child for "psychobilly", this fucking crazy Dexter kid should be it.
RIP Dex
Check out amazon mp3 they have like 5 of they're cds for download for only 4.99.
well, Dex still tours , but with his sister, as the Dexter Romweber duo. Actually, Jack White just put out a single of theirs, on Thirdman.
It's a 12 bar blues in E major so it's E, A, and B.
I hate that this film was edited like this. I so badly want to see the uninterrupted footage of this performance. It's absolute gold. Rock n roll history. It belongs to the people, to be enjoyed.
Wish we had footage of the Jets whole set on that cold night. They were clearly on absolute fire.
@@shanegedekoh absolutely! It's a lost treasure, the rest of this performance.
...This is sick as hell...
