VLOG: Ever wonder how to convert your old High-8 and MiniDV tapes to digital video? In this particular vlog I take a look at the ClearClick 2.0, a device that lets me convert my Mini-DV and HIgh-8 tapes to digital Mp4 files by running a signal from my MiniDV camcorder to the clear click 2.0 and onto either an SD card or thumb-drive.
Starting this week I will be doing screencasts as I digitize my MiniDV and High-8 tapes. If you see a particular clip that you like and want to use in one of your projects email me RentonVlogs@gmail.com and we'll take it from there.
If you have any questions about the clear click 2.0 not covered in this vlog feel free to reach out directly via my email, Instagram, or in the comments below.

im so grateful for this video you have no clue how much i needed this hahah happy holidays
I just got the ClearClick 2.0 recorder. I’m using it to record old VHS tapes to digital. I’m having an issue though. When I try to record a tape that’s more than 2 hours in length it creates a second file and continues recording. How do I get it to record just 1 file?? Or will I just have to edit the 2 files so they are 1 in a vídeo editor program??
From my understanding there is a 2hour cut-off on the Clearclick 2.0 to avoid audio sync issues. So yeah, I think your'e exactly right and that your best bet will be to string them together in a program.

can we record only the audio right on this unit?????
Are you able to record onto SD card without a tape in the camera?
Good question, so I just tried this out with my camera (Canon Hv20) and the simple answer is, no. But, you can record to an SD card at the same time you are recording to a tape.
@@RentonVlogs thank you!
My sd card can't be detected. how can I fix that?
What type of memory card are you using, and how fast is the date rate on the card?
Does this record at 60fps?
Can you use this if the camcorder you are hooking up to is broken? Can turn on but can not play the tapes
Unfortunately, no, that will not work.
Does it save onto a USB?
Which minidv camcorder are you using?
Canon Hv20
damn no one is showing what is the real quality after convertetd
To an extent, the quality depends on the camera you used to shoot on the mini DV tape with. Like if you used a Panasonic HVX200, that's going to look better than a camera that only shoots 720x480.
I have a playlist on my channel called "Tape Breaking", where I talk about the Mini DV tapes I shot in my past. I use the Clear Click 2.0 converter to digitize the tapes and you can get an idea of the quality there. (Also for reference I shot most of the tapes on a Canon XL1 or Canon Hv20). Here's the link to that playlist; czcams.com/video/zQuXPkGkyh8/video.html&pbjreload=101
Mini-DV is a digital format. So reducing the output to analog makes absolutely no sense. Simply connect your camera to a Firewire port on your computer. If you don't have a Firewire port on your computer, then you can buy a $10.00 card and install it into your PC. Then there are inexpensive sortware apps that allow recording your native mini-DV TAPES directly to your hard drive. So you get an exact digital copy of your digital tapes.
Yeah, you could do that, but this video is specifically about the simplicity of using THIS device/an "unboxing" video as stated in the title to not mislead people. Apple also phased out firewire ports (yes there are adapters) on their computers in 2012 which created a need for a device like this (Especially since MiniDV/High8 is outdated tech and has been for quite sometime). Even if there is a slight loss in quality transferring the footage to the SD card/through an analog output, its still a great device that's extremely easy to use that many people will get. That being said, it's not for everybody.
@@RentonVlogs You can configure a Firewire to Thunderbolt cable for the Mac (as perfectly demonstrated in another CZcams video) and then make direct DIGITAL copies of your mini-DV tapes. The quality would be way better than using the ClearClick device.
@@myronachtman4304 Right, as I mentioned in my previous comment there are adapters (I can't speak for everyone, but I would need two of them, and then the firewire cable). I prefer this device to that option and having wires everywhere running out of my computer (I would also really like if Apple included more ports on their computers but we all know that's not going to happen anymore). So comparing my previously captured footage using firewire800 cable to this device and what was captured, the quality difference is negligible. So unless you're working on a documentary or something and you're being paid, the simplicity of using this is the better option for me, but again it's not for everybody. 🤙 I hope all is well, cheers
