    Guys please read, for the sake of your tapes:
    DV Tapes are Digital Video Tapes, doing it this way means that the camcorder is converting the tape from digital to analog and then the USB Device is converting it back to digital, because of this you'll suffer noticeable quality differences.
    If you're looking for the absolute best transfer for MiniDV Tapes, you'll want to transfer the footage through a Firewire 4 pin cable which would most likely be labelled as the 'DV' Port on your camcorder. This type of transfer will be a direct bit-for-bit transfer of what's on the tape to your computer and quality will not suffer. You'll have to do more research on this but this is basically the main things you'll need:
    A MiniDV Camcorder that has a DV (Firewire 4 pin) port
    A laptop or desktop with a Firewire Port (Desktops often use 6 pin and laptops often use 4 pin)
    A Firewire Cable (Either 4 pin to 4 pin OR 4 pin to 6 pin depending on your computer)
    Reputable DV Capture Software such as Scenalyzer or WinDV
    As for the rest or if you run into some issues, you'll have to look through Google and Forums, most new computers don't have a Firewire port but it would be worth getting a Firewire desktop card if you have a desktop or an old laptop with a Firewire port as they should be relatively cheap, I promise it's well worth it.
    P.S. DO NOT buy a Firewire to USB cable, they don't really work

    It's worth noting mini DV IS a digital format but the obvious solution to avoid quality loss (a firewire to MAC connection or a firewire to usb adapter for a PC) will only work if your computer recognizes the device. That's why you need to find the right software to bridge the gap between the camcorder's digital output and the computer's input.

    Thanks for this Great video. I bought the Roxio, followed the instructions on the this video step by step and downloaded my MiniDV onto a DVD without any problem. Also thanks a lot for showing how to deal with the old miniDV with a screw driver and a pencil eraser. I love this kind of technology. It worked for me. Just one comment. Roxio does not come with the Cable you need to connect your Camcorder AV to the Roxio three prongs. Fortunately, I was able to find mine that came with the Camcorder a long time ago. Thanks to my habit to saving important stuff. HaHa!

    So your solution is to convert a digital recording to composite video analogue and convert that back to digital video into the computer!
    The camcorder has a DV socket. This is called iLink on Sony camcorders. You needed a iLink to Firewire cable to the socket on the front of your PC. The cable is shown at 0:42. Your nicely equipped computer has IEEE1394 Firewire sockets on the top and next to the USB 2.0 on the front at 2:50. The camcorder has DV in/out (mini Firewire) as shown at 3:10. The transfer is digital to digital with zero loss of quality. This should have worked.
    What might not get transferred is the date time stamp that can be toggles on play back on the camcroder. Also, as tape the transfer time is real time, unlike when transferring DV off SD cards. Depending on the software the digital files off the tape are in a number of small files or one file for the whole tape. For software and software editing you can use Nero, Creative Video and a number of others. The same software will capture analogue video from VHS and Hi8 with a capture card or dongle. The digital format of DV is not compressed so you might want to convert to DVD format mpg or m4a. It you want to edit the film with dubs and captions then import as raw. Use software that does not recode during editing and render to DVD mpg or mp4 when finished.

      Ron W Thanks for the suggestion, Ron! I did buy the firewire cord (it was that white one in the video) and try that first but my camcorder is so old that there was no longer a driver current enough to work with Windows 7 and my computer simply didn't recognize it. Mixing old technology with new is not always possible. But I agree that anytime you can keep a digital image digital in the transfer, the better the quality. This was simply an alternative when all else failed. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thank you so much for posting this video! It was so easy to follow. My Macbook Air doesn't recognize my Sony TRV480 as a device in iMovie because it's too old. I found the Roxio software/hardware on your website, and ended up on the Corel website. Apparently, VHS to DVD doesn't work beyond iOS 10.6 according to their customer support. I have iOS 10.10, so I think I'm out of luck Roxio-wise, unless you're aware of something that works for the most current Mac software. I feel like I'm trying to get a cd player to play a record.

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 9 lety

      Thanks for watching and for the inquiry, Hampino! Great analogy - "CD player to play a record". I called Roxio and you are correct - there is no support yet for Mac iOS 10.10. I did find a different product but I have not tried it so I can not recommend it but it looks like it might work. www.amazon.com/Diamond-Camcorders-supporting-composite-connection/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1417727374&sr=1-1 I gave you the Amazon link because it's $5 cheaper than buying it on the Diamond website www.diamondmm.com/product/79-diamond-vc500mac-video-capture-usb-2-0-for-mac
      If you are not in a big hurry, you know companies will work on updating drivers but as you have already become painfully aware, the longer we wait to convert old media, the harder the process. I commend you on trying to get your movies into a watchable medium.

    I'm working on this right now. Lost my PC and camcorder in Hurricane Sandy but all my tapes were on the second floor so I did not lose them. There are cheap used camcorders with 1394 firewire port for $75-$150 dollars. Wondering if buying a dedicated DV player has any advantages as far as transfer quality. The players cost much more, closer to $500-$900 dollars.

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 9 lety

      +rtrain67 I'm so sorry to hear of your loss but thrilled your old movies are safe! The process I explain here is simply an affordable alternative to buying a dedicated player. As you have found, those are extremely expensive. They are however, what the transfer companies use and they keep the quality high. Do the math. If you have 3 tapes at a cost of $10-$15 each to have professionally transferred, you may consider having them professionally done. If you have more, the firewire is great - if it works. It did not with my old camcorder as you saw in the beginning of the video. Just make sure you buy one that you can still get an updated driver for. (If you're looking at a Canon, go to the Canon site, enter the model number and check it's support page to see if you can still download an updated driver.)

If you purchase a storage account, it is guaranteed for your lifetime + 100 years. They will be adding video to the storage accounts next year but for now they will digitize and return the video to you on a DVD and flash drive if you want it. It is priced by the box but there is a limit as to how much you can put in the box so read it carefully or call them for an exact quote should you need more done. Good luck! Enjoy your videos!

      Thanks for watching, Tony! The Roxio captures whatever is on the player's screen. That would imply to me that it is not a digital to digital conversion. HOWEVER, leaving our memories on a miniDV tape was a complete waste to me since that technology is not used in my home anymore - much like VHS, which is what I bought the Roxio for years ago. So I was looking for an inexpensive way to transfer my recordings and I thought this worked really well! It's certainly better than leaving them in a drawer or an old camera bag.

As far as editing software goes, I am fully versed in CS6 but while looking for software that is more affordable and easier to learn, I found Corel VideoStudio Ultimate and I love it. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I did movies with a lot of computer graphics or special effects but for family history videos it's perfect. It works fine again as in the early days, using Firewire and Movie Maker. Unfortunately Firewire is not supported bij newer operating systems. There are no new drivers available. Good luck.

    Madam, I picked up a Sony GV-HD700 recorder/player to see if it wil play our old mini DV tapes and it does not problem. This unit has an iLink (HDV/DV), HDMI, component and A/V out. Is there a way to use any of these connection points to transfer to my computer and retain the higher quality? I do have the A/V out cable which i could use the Roxio dongle if needed. Your suggestions? Thanks....

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 9 lety

      +Jan Doddy I have never used one of these. You should be able to use the Firewire to transfer but I just went to the site and I don't see an updated driver. There is , however, a manual you can download and a community you can ask. Certainly I would try everything I could to keep it a digital file. Yes, you can use the method I show here but it should be a last resort since it will not be as high quality AND you have a way to watch your tapes now with the player. Please let us know your experience!

My new computer does not have Fire Wire so as you know it won't accept the transfer.... I watched your video and see you used a Roxio usb to dvd dongle.... Will that work for my sony? My av out port is shaped like a half moon or something... Yours looks like a needle point plug or something.... Is there different types of AV ports? please help... its driving me nuts... lol

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 9 lety

      Edmund Edwards Thanks, Edmund! I found the quality satisfactory. It is, however, a process that takes a digital tape to analog and then back to digital so there is some quality loss. Personally, I didn't see enough of a loss to spend the extra money for either the professional transfer at around $25 per tape or the professional transfer equipment which runs in the thousands of dollars. It really depends on how you are using your end video. Making a professional commercial movie or documentary is different than saving my own family home movies in a medium that I will actually use and can share with the family. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 9 lety

      +Edy Wijaya This method of transfer simply records whatever is seen on the screen. If the date shows when you play the video, it should show when you transfer it using the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD dongle and software. (Even the word "Play" shows on the final since it comes up on the screen.) If it doesn't show when you play the video and you want to ADD the date, use an editing software and add text to the screen typing in the date. Basic Windows My Movie Maker or Apple iMovie will both give you the option to add captions so you can always add the date. The Roxio Easy VHS to DVD also gives you an option to add a menu when saving to DVD. You could add the date as a Menu title or Chapter title - but it would not show while you are watching the footage - only when you go to the menu.

    So, I agree but you lose all your quality of the DV format going to VHS, NTSC. Sadly, I have the same need, with about 100 qty 1-hr Mini DV and DV Tapes. With products and software like Roxio even the VHS resolution is so low. I am still looking for a Hi-Res solution as I used a Cannon XL-1, an $8,000 camera in the day. It has NTSC output but man, what a waste. And I also have a Mini-DV/DV player with NTSC, but it's just not cool. Sadly the Camera's FireWire out is NOT recognized by my Mac though it has Firewire. My next path will be to have to resurrect my 1998 PC with Firewire card and Barracuda Drive, the only problem being I scrubbed a lot of the software and will have to try and rebuild that first. At one Time, I did (do still?) have a Disc Recorder with Mini DV in, but I think it had the same problem over the Canon. It's a bugaboo for sure!!!!

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 8 lety

      +Cathy Shanks I would look into a direct transfer first since that would be a digital transfer giving you the best quality. To check that option out, google your Panasonic model and look at the manual online as well as any updated drivers for it. It's possible there's a simple firewire or usb connection that might work. IF that doesn't work, then you can use this method. It's not as high quality as a direct digital transfer but it's much better quality than leaving those tapes in a camera bag or box and never viewed. Enter your model number at www.bandhphoto.com or www.amazon.com to find the cables you are missing. Good luck!

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 8 lety

      +Azaan Vongola First, start with the manual. panasonic.ca/viewing/ALL/NV-GS320/OI/vqt1a47/vqt1a47.pdf on page 41 it shows how you would hook it up to your tv. That's how you would hook it up to your computer with a Roxio Easy VHS to DVD. HOWEVER, page 49 begins the process of how to download the software and transfer contents to your PC. You would not need to buy anything to follow the manual and try to transfer the content on your tapes. That process would keep your video in a digital format and that is always preferable. IF, and only if, your computer doesn't recognize your camcorder, THEN using the Roxio as I have shown is an alternative. If you do not have the "Multi cable" I believe this is it. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/531895-REG/Panasonic_K2KZ9CB00001_Audio_Video_Cable.html You might even get the cable and then go to the Panasonic website to see if there's a driver to fit your PC or MAC before buying the Roxio. I wish you luck and enjoy your videos!

    I just got through doing this with my Canon optima 30, thanks. The playback on the video after transferring to my computer is a little grainy, is that to be expected? I used the Roxio vhs to dvd 3 plus.

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 10 lety

      Thanks for the question, Bill. Roxio records what it receives. You can change the aspect ratio in File>preferences but that probably won't help your grainy issue. Try hooking your camcorder up to your television and playing a tape. If the picture on TV is grainy also, then it's the tape and/or the settings we chose back when we taped it (SP, LP, etc.). You can try cleaning the camcorder with canned air or a 'digital video head cleaner' tape. You can get a cleaner tape at B & H. Go to www.treasuredarchives.com/links.html and click on the bandhphoto link. The item number is B&H # PAAYDVMCLC Mfr # AY-DVMCLWW. $7.49 Good luck!

For concerts, my genealogy interviews, and filming Super 8 and regular 8mm, I use a Panasonic AG-HMC80P AVCCAM. Don't use RCA adapters or cables (analog video only) for export of digital video formats on to PC! It will ruin the video and audio quality of the transferred data stream. Use only FireWire (a.k.a. 1394 or iLink) cable, if you want the raw, as-recorded quality.

    • @treasuredarchives1145
      @treasuredarchives1145  Před 7 lety +1

      FireWire is the way to go IF IT WORKS. If it doesn't, this is an option over leaving your videos in a medium that you no longer use and so it sits in a drawer somewhere. If you watched the video, FireWire was the first thing I tried.

    So you went to all the trouble to originally capture all your precious moments in pure digital by using a Mini DV camcorder. Then when you want to store those pure digital memories onto the more convenient digital medium of DVD you have to convert the data from digital to analog and then back to digital? And out of the 2 analog choices your camera gives you (composite or SVIDEO), you use the inferior composite video for your conversion.This sounds like a horrible idea. This video isn't about finding a way to make your camera be recognized by new computers it's a way to 'settle'.
