El célebre Frank Farian, quedó sorprendido por la gracia del artista caribeño, y de inmediato le echó el ojo. La vida de Bobby cambiaría para siempre pues sería el alma del proyecto que tenían en mente para la música disco. La banda Boney M, fue creada con dos cantantes, una ex-modelo y un bailarín, todos nacidos en Centroamérica. La banda fue creada para competir con ABBA. Su fundador, un productor alemán, descartaba a músicos para el proyecto, el fin era la actuación. Las canciones de Boney M, eran playback y el vozarrón masculino que todos escuchamos, no era de Bobby Farrell. Cuentan que el productor alemán Frank Farian, en el año 1975, decide fabricar una banda de actores que para realizar shows en vivo. El empresario tenía en mente, formar un grupo que tuviera talento en el área visual, donde generalmente los músicos descuidaban. La mecánica era utilizar el playback, haciendo corre una cinta grabada en estudios de alta calidad. Comenzó a reclutar prospectos para la banda y Frank prefería gente de origen centroamericana pues confiaba que el ingrediente principal para el éxito del proyecto, era la gracia de la sangre que tenían los artistas caribeños. De inmediato el productor alemán puso sus ojos en las cantantes jamaicanas Liz Mitchell y Marcia Barrett y la ex modelo de Monserrat Maizie Williams. Y uno de sus asistentes le recomendó a un DJ que sorprendía en los boliches por sus movimientos. De esta forma llega Roberto Bobby Alfonso Farrell (Bobby Farrell) al grupo. Solo bastaba ponerle el nombre. Frank decide ponerle el nombre de una conocida serie australiana más una letra que representara a los cuatro integrantes. Así sale Boney M. aclaremos que la letra ‘M’ está compuesta por cuatro rayitas. Y así comienzan los grandes éxitos como Belfast, Rivers of Babylon, Ma Baker y también los descontentos y las tiranteces internas, como existen en todas las bandas. Sin embargo en Boney M, había algo muy inusual, el líder de la banda era Bobby Farrell y teóricamente el vocalista. Pero Farrell no cantaba, la voz que todos escuchábamos, era la del propio productor Frank Farian, que le gustaba cantar, incluso a realizar al obra del Doctor Frankenstein, famoso musical en la época de los 80’. Volviendo a Bobby Farrell, había que estar en sus zapatos. El bailarín nacido en las islas Aruba, que primero fue marino y DJ antes de integrarse al grupo, se sentía un tanto humillado de ser solo una marioneta. El quería que lo dejaran cantar, aunque sabía que no lo hacía muy bien, pero que al menos la voz que arreglaban en los estudios de grabación sea la suya y no la de otro. Pero por otro lado, Frank no soltaba ese hueso, tal vez era el ser la voz de una banda tan exitosa, era algo que disfrutaba en su intimidad. Lo cierto que Bobby no aguantó la situación y comenzó a revelarse. Llegaba tarde a los ensayos, y comenzaba a realizar con torpeza su papel frente al micrófono en los shows, dejando mas regalado al grupo con el tema del playback. Esto molesto a los demás integrantes incluyendo al propio Frank Farian, por lo cual le demostró al centroamericano quien manda. Corría 1980 y Bobby Farrell fue expulsado de Boney M. Enseguida Frank contrata al cantante y percusionista Reggie Tsiboe, para reemplazara a Bobby y continúa con las giras de la banda. Por otro lado, Farrel pretende iniciar una carrera como solista, en aquellos días Bobby era el alma mater de Boney M y era lógico que le sacara provecho. Bobby produjo como solista el disco POLIZEI, con muy pocos resultados. Pero por otro lado, la gira de Boney M se había transformado en puro reclamos. La gente reclamaba a Farrell y los shows vendidos se estaban cayendo si Frank no lograba un acuerdo con su artista estrella para que volviera. Ente otras cosas que tuvo que tranzar el productor para la vuelta del artista fue, que el grupo se llamaría Bobby Farrel y Boney M. El Lute, fue una canción emblemática para el líder de la banda fallecido en el 2010, pues no solo era una canción dedicada a Eleuterio Sánchez, «una especie de Robin Hood español», sino que en un show ocurre algo inusitado. I discovered these legends by accident 4 days ago and cannot believe I had never heard of them.I was listening to a playlist on CZcams that has all of the hits from the 70s .I kept seeing who I now know as the beautiful Liz Mitchell but the name under her was Boney M.After seeing Boney M for the 4th time I had to look them up,and wow.Daddy Cool was the 1st song and I was simply blown away from the entire performance,then Ma Baker and after listening for 4days I have now become a huge fan.They also have some of the best fans and I’ve seen a lot of concerts and Boney M fans are extremely festive and joyful having a great time.Im thankful to see such amazing people .
