  • “The best there ever will be… according to him” says the host. Lol. Sigh.
    Poor Bret Hart, honestly, the guy cannot get a break. He does this interview shortly after leaving the WWF to talk about his legacy and being humiliated in Canada and this host is just sitting there looking like he assumes what Bret is saying is actually part of a fake wresting storyline.
    Anyway, the interview isn’t that bad, I’m just a mixture of jealous and heartbroken for this missed opportunity. The host clearly has no idea what questions to ask a month or two after the biggest thing that will ever happen in professional wrestling goes down.
    Anyway, I’m posting a new wrestling video every Friday so please subscribe. Got some good stuff coming.

      @@maggaveli6764 Bret knew what was going to happen. His dad owned a territory and he traveled about to Japan, England, Puerto Rico and the US. He knew the deal, how ruthless promoters could be, especially when wrestlers held their ground. He had seen what had happened to Jesse the Body, Warrior and Savage when they stood up to Vince. Much worse happened to Bruiser Brody. That I could see being murdered in the locker room. The thing was karma caught up to Michaels and a few months later, Vince had him job to Austin, which made Michaels sooky and stay home for 3 years until WCW went under. So in the end, Vince won, but Bret had the WCW deal and I think the Goldberg injury and that loss hurt Bret as much or more because at least in the end he found some peace with Vince and WWE. And to be fair, I don't think Vince wanted to screw Bret, but fucked himself putting the belt back on Bret and probably thought he could get Bret to allow himself to be torn down. But Bret wasn't having that. I don't buy the reasoning that it was just Bischoff and the Madusa thing that's why they did it, so I agree with you there that they did try to actively bring him down, just didn't mean for it to come out that way, which is odd because you wouldn't think Vince would underestimate Brets resolve to not do a job in Canada and fail to realize the depth Bret and Shawn had serious enough heat that a finish couldn't be worked out because of a lack of mutual respect at that point.

      @@dingdong7610 I agree with your statement. Truth be told, Shawn Michael's started this problem with what he told Bret at that house show just over a few weeks before the Survivor Series. Shawn said, "I appreciate that but just know that I am not willing to do the same thing for you." I am willing to bet that had Vince McMahon mediated the situation between Bret and Shawn, Bret would have agreed to put Shawn over at the Survivor Series for the title but Vince was cashing in on the heat between the two because it generated so much attention and ratings for him.

      For 83 weeks, Nitro was defeating Raw in the ratings. Wrestlers were jumping ship to WCW faster than you could say “Titanic.” Bret Hart was told the company couldn’t afford him, and the company was downsizing and taking the water coolers out of the offices. But the company was not on the verge of bankruptcy as some would believe. Actually, despite getting thumped in ratings, the WWE’s House Show and international presence was not only keeping the company afloat but helping them turn it around from an economic standpoint.

Ever since 92-95 even, Shawn did numerous jobs to Bret from house shows, to PPV cards, to home videos. Yeah Shawn was egotistical but he would put Bret over clean (like always). Shawn hadn’t had a clean victory over Bret until WrestleMania 12 and even then you could argue if it was clean given the fact Bret had him beat when the time ran out. I think both men had their egos but even if you believe Bret where Shawn said he wouldn’t drop the strap to him, so what? It’s a business. Shawn dropped it to Sid, Shawn dropped it to Austin, I guarantee if Vince thought it would be good for business he would’ve forced Shawn to drop it anyways. But that’s the ‘what if’s’. Both guys had their egos and overall it ended up burning them both in the long run; unfortunate to say because both are great great wrestlers

    Feel bad for Bret, but ceding the highest prize in the company without being beaten sort of devalues the title itself, and Vince wasn't going to have that. Back in the 90's, being the heavyweight champ meant a hell of a lot more than it does now. With all the moving parts and WCW being involved, there probably wasn't enough time to wait for Bret to leave Canada as the champion and put someone over in the months to come, and so he schemed the screw job.

    Watching this so many years later one thing came to my mind. I dont think it was only about money from Vince's perspective. Wrestling & WWF was changing at the time and with Bret being an old school guy, who was so serious about wrestling - he just did not fit in that. From Vince's standpoint it was a Perfect Time to let him go. He was on top for so many years & WWF was not going to win against wcw with same old school wrestling bad guys vs good guys. As much as i admire Bret I believe Vince got rid of him not because of the financial reasons, but Bret surely would have been a pain in the backside, with WWF changing into more violent wrestling, half naked divas. A match against Shawn at ss1997 and the circumstances to get the belt of Bret is a different story.

      @@CurtisAndersonCJA this interview support everything bret said. wwe was in black by september 1997. never in danger going under. with bret and bret did not like what vince had for bret character .he story of the episode was WWF was close to going out of business due to the WCW war and couldn't afford Bret anymore, so Vince nobly allowed Hart out of his contract so he could negotiate a better deal with WCW. Actually, Dave says, Vince first talked to Bret about deferring some of his contract to later on but that was a couple months earlier. At the time, WWF really was having some financial struggles, but it's an exaggeration to say they were almost driven out of business. They were never even close. But regardless, that's irrelevant because in Sept. 97, they raised the price of PPVs by $10. That added revenue, which was nearly $1 million per month in pure profit, was easily enough to get them out of financial trouble. By the time Survivor Series 97 rolled around, WWF was doing just fine, money-wise, and were only a couple months away from catching fire and getting nuclear hot. So no, they did not need to get rid of Bret's contract. And in fact, in October, a couple weeks before Survivor Series, Vince changed his mind and asked Bret to stay, saying that the financial situation had turned around. But by this point, Hart's negotiations with WCW were full speed ahead and Vince allowed Hart to continue negotiating. But after talking to both sides, it was clear Vince had no real plan for Bret and he didn't really seem like he wanted to keep him, so Bret took the WCW deal and the rest is history. But of course, none of that is mentioned in this show. The episode also claimed Hart refused to drop the title to anyone (again, not true. Only Shawn. Bret even offered to lose it to Brooklyn Brawler if they wanted. In fact, Dave breaks down all the different scenarios that were presented here, and Bret was willing to lose the title to anyone other than Shawn, anywhere other than that show in Montreal, at any date before or after the PPV. They had actually presented Bret with dozens of different scenarios, all of which he agreed to, only for Vince to keep coming back around to Shawn at Survivor Series, which was the one and only thing Bret wouldn't budge on). They also tried to paint the picture that Bret could have taken the title to WCW the night after Survivor Series. In fact, Bret's WWF contract didn't end until Dec. 1st, and he was booked on more than a dozen house shows after Survivor Series and had even agreed to work the early December PPV because Bischoff had given his blessing. There was zero chance Bret was going to show up with the belt on Nitro. There was concern that Bischoff would go on Nitro the next day and announce he had signed Bret, and Dave says it's true that Bischoff certainly was planning to do that. But Bret had also asked Bischoff to hold off on the announcement and Bischoff had agreed. Vince knew about that too, but in recorded conversations with Bret (from the Wrestling With Shadows documentary), Vince didn't seem concerned since the word was already out and everyone knew Bret was leaving already. This just goes on and on. We all know the story already. Anyway, TL;DR - interesting show, but WWE's version of the story is bullshit. But we all knew that.

It to me was Vince trying to f*ck around with Bret so either he would make wcw think hes not serious and lowball him, then have to stay at a lesser salary cause Vince would have the leverage then, Flip side just wanted him to get a lower offer then could cause in Vince's mind, how dare you make me sign you to this 20 year contract to start so ill mess with your money over there too. i dont know, just that whole we cant afford, wait we can, oh creative is crap, oh, just go, part is so fishy to me.

      He did pass the torch to him. At WM12. Shawn wasn't championship material at the time, not until later in 2006-08 when he matured. His attitude made him a liablity and the main event players knew it. He sabotaged his feud with Vader, his match with Diesel at WM11, and was planning on do it to Austin at WM14 if it wasn't for Undertaker. That's not a guy you want to drop the belt too.

Vince just fucked it up. He shouldn't have made Bret the champion, or should have made Taker fight him in Survivor Series. Like, there were so many other and better options. All this sneaky behavior behind the scenes was never necessary. It just shows how much control he lost, which is ironic, since everyone loves to call him a "control freak" all the time 😂

He rarely mentions those two factors today when talking about the screwjob. Today, Its all Shawn refused to put me over when I offered to do the honors for him. That story seemed to come out years later having to trust Bret's word, no recollection of the conversation from Shawn. I'm a big Bret fan, but all parties are guilty of contributing to this "cluster fuck" IMO Bret, Shawn and Vince.

HBK doesn’t remember a lot of things from that time and he admits that. Says so in his doc as well. If he was lying he would have been called out on it. Lots of people were in that locker room.

      @@wrestlingtapes2036 Well you would think that Bret/Shawn conversation should have been mentioned in 97. I don't think I ever heard that story ever mentioned until a Q&A with Bret in 2005. I'm not sticking up for Shawn at all. I get why Bret would not want to put him over. I just think losing in Canada played a bigger part, now that you look back on interviews like this. Its convenient to use Shawn as an excuse, but I don't think Bret was big on the idea of dropping the belt to anyone that night. I think if he had his way he would forfeit the tittle in Ottawa like he says in this interview. Which like Jim Cornette said to Vince "why don't you just let him piss in your mouth while he does that".

    • @steveshepard88
      @steveshepard88 Před 3 lety +2

      No. The only party that is 1000% guilty here is Vince McMahon. Bret was 1000% in the right because he had a legally binding contract that gave him creative control over his character. Thus it doesn’t matter whether his reasons were what anyone would consider bad or good or legitimate or illegitimate where it concerns not wanting to put HBK over in in Canada. That decision 1000% was up to Bret on a legal level and had he wanted he could have and probably should have sued WWE and Vince into the ground over it on breach of contract as he would have won. I’m sure the only reason he didn’t is he wanted to protect his overall career legacy and not have Vince/WWE bury all his footage forever in retaliation for his winning a huge settlement against them. Also Bret likely didn’t sue because he loves the wrestling business and wouldn’t want to hurt it in anyway. Like say if his suing WWE caused them to go bankrupt or be close to it in vast financial dire straits that would hurt his fellow wrestlers that need their paychecks and if you don’t have wrestlers wrestling due to lack of being paid you simply don’t have a show.

    • @bradlee5874
      @bradlee5874 Před 2 lety

      The reason being is that if Bret had said back then that Shawn wouldn't put him over during that time, it would have completely exposed the business and nearly kill kayfabe. It would have made it seem to the general public that wrestling is completely **fake**, predetermined, and not competitive at all. He only spoke on contractual reasons to due it being a legal problem. As years went by, more truth came out about the situation and Shawn admitted to his lies. As kayfabe was dying out, Bret had no problem telling both sides of the big picture.

He says in this interview that the entire locker room was on his side, and that's just not true - so many wrestlers said that it was business or that they didn't know what to make out of the situation... But none of them wanted to get out of their WWE contact because of the Montreal Screwjob, as Bret seems to allude to here.

      They WERE on his side, at the time, because they thought the way Vince went about it was totally wrong. Some later changed their minds, but still supported Bret. Bret was not into himself, this is such a common misnomer. He took it SERIOUSLY, very seriously as he should have. He knew nothing BUT wrestling, and from the time he could walk and talk wrestling was his life, the business that put food on the family table, and clothes on their backs. He had a RIGHT to be proud of himself, and work that he did. There is nothing wrong with that.

      No they weren't - I've seen dozens of shoot interviews with wrestlers who were in WWE at that time, and it just doesn't add up to what Bret was claiming here.
      As far as Bret taking it serious - true, there's nothing wrong with that. You're not going to find any wrestler today who takes it that serious. At the same time he was very into himself to the extent that he was delusional about certain things... Living that life for so long will take its toll on an individual.
      When you watch his DVD drom 2005, Bret himself says that there was a lack of communication. At that time he had gained some distance to his former wrestling life and was able to reflect upon everything that happened in a more realistic and reasonable way.
      Brock Lesnar lived that life for only a few years and when he was in the UFC he gave an interview where he confirmed that you lose your head after a while and that you can't distinguish what is real and what is not... That's why he never again signed a full-time contract with the WWE.
      Bret calling his autobiography "Cartoon world of wrestling" is quite revealing.

Taker had a lot to do with keeping things sane in the locker room after Montreal. Wrong was done on both sides, from both Vince and Bret.
