  • Bret Hart is a hero to generations of Canadian wrestling fans. Now, the five-time WWE Heavyweight Champion is honoured on Canada's Walk of Fame. He joined Tom Power to tell us what it was like growing up in a wrestling dynasty, why storytelling is so important to his work and how he managed to last for decades in the physically grueling world of wrestling.

    Bret is the man, not just as a wrestler. But, as a person, he comes across as an honest and prideful guy. He's someone who tells it like it is and I've always admired him for that, even as a younger fan of his.
    I think Bret's one of those guys that were born to do what they do and that was wrestling, he's definitely one of the greatest wrestlers ever, long live the Hitman.

    • @aronmaslan6604

      He was a victim of nepotism. He got into the business because of his Dad. That mentality ruined him, as he always expected things after that. Everything was always someone else’s fault, he was never the issue. He felt he was always getting screwed and wasn’t getting pushed by promoters. He’d be the last guy to see things clearly or “tell it like it is”

      @danielmelvin4525 Před 2 lety +3

      @@aronmaslan6604 some truth to that, but their wasn’t any nepotism for him to benefit from in the WWF. Maybe early on as Stampede was supposed to be affiliated with WWF, and Vince wanted the bulldogs and took Bret cause he was the promoters son sure. But that partnership ended quickly and Stu was never paid by Vince. Vince could have easily tossed Bret out at that point before the Hart Foundation even formed.
      Still Bret stuck it out through the eighties. He got over as a 2 time tag champ in a golden era of tag teams (the second title as baby faces with LOD and Demolition still around). He was a great IC champ in the tail end of the Hogan era, and Became the man right at the end of Hogans run (technically was champ while Hogans run was still going in 1992). That wasn’t nepotism that was years of hard work paid off, in a organization where guys didn’t stick around long or be able to stay over for as long as he did. Only guy who really had a better run than Bret’s run with WWF from 1984-1997 is the Undertaker, and maybe Shawn. Though his career was two different runs his jntial run was 88-98.

    There's that saying that everyone loves an underdog, but Bret was so much more than that.
    He's literally an example of how far raw talent, hard work and dedication can really take you if you're passionate enough about what you do and you're determined to fight through all the politics and riff raff of your workplace. I read alot of people say he's a mark for himself, and you know what? Even if he is, he's damn well earned it. The amount of times the guy was used as a placeholder to drop the belt to others less deserving, I would be tooting my own horn too!
    You look back at when Bret was starting to come up and he talked about how he constantly questioned himself when being entrusted with the titles in the company because he didn't think he had the "star power" of a Hogan or an Ultimate Warrior.
    Regardless, as soon as I saw Bret wrestle Mr Perfect Kurt Hennig at Summer Slam '91, I knew right there what star power really was, Bret was it and he just went from strength to strength impressing me more and more with each match.
    Hogan and Warrior had the fancy marketing, toys and promos, but as a wrestling fan, I was never really interested in all the buttered up TV work and props. I wanted to be drawn into wrestling matches with that willing suspension of disbelief and Bret was one of the only guys in the company who was capable of delivering that consistently. He gave wrestling a bit of credibility where others made it look cheap and fake at times. Yeah we knew it wasn't guys really beating each other up, but you don't have to do it in a way that's soooo obvious to the audience, Bret showed there's an art to this stuff.
    He was one of the few guys I looked forward to switching on to every week, and by the time some of the others I liked left around 1993, Bret was pretty much the only one left that I properly followed.
    PS:- I was surprised Bret said the Iron Man Match was his favourite loss, I thought he would have gone with the IC Title match at Wembley.

    I don’t see this spoken about as much from anyone, including Bret Hart himself, but his presence from head to tippy toe at the time with the pink, black, design of the venom like black stripes, and the avenged sevenfold logo that Bret had when the band was most likely still in diapers, was revolutionary for the time that’s unique to him, and really has never been replicated years after the hitman hung up his boots.
