Never ever get tired of hearing stories about the Montreal screw job
I do. It happened 30 years ago and its time to move on.
Moreso that this year (2022) marks its 25th anniversary.
Well, we can't hold grudges forever.
But never forget its lessons while preserving (or enhancing) the truth.
It was a work you dumb fans lmao
Dan "The Beast" Severn. The only guy who ever walked down the WWE ramp with his UFC and NWA titles
Iconic mustache. He made D-Lo Brown better, after he had to wear the chest protector.
Love that Ken was riding for Bretđđœ
That is real loyalty.
He was riding for DX too, playing both sides. In the Unauthorized History of D-Generation X book, HHH said Shamrock walks up to them and says, "I don't know what the heck just happened, but you two are cool with me."
@@Speedyreedy1218 that's true Ken was friends with both sides.
So, loyalty is all great and stuff but if you listen to this interview carefully, you can get that Ken Shamrock paid a price for his loyalty to Bret. Moreover, Shamrock even said that Bret had talked to him about doing an angle with him where they were going to put the strap on Ken, so you need to listen to this interview carefully because Shamrock paid a HEAVY price for siding with Bret Hart. Why he had to get work at TNA cos Vince wasn't interested in using Shamrock again. Not sure if Ken is in HOF?
It goes to prove Bret is indeed the locker room guy, helping and guiding the newbies.
And most (if not all) of these up-and-coming talents, they thanked Bret one way or another (eg., StoneCold, The Rock, Ken Shamrock).
While at the same time, Bret kept the bullies called The Kliq at bay.
The Kliq weren't bullies. The locker room made them the bad guy.
@@Speedyreedy1218
Well, because they're really the bad guys. Actions and their characters at the time provided the visual aid and proof.
@@OrionOodama Hahaha, no they aren't. The popular thing to do amongst ex WWE employees, the IWC, and dirtsheets are to vilify The Kliq.
@@Speedyreedy1218
Laugh as you please.
Or that's your way as excuse to justify their actions on their behalf (whether they care or not).
Because simply put, you condone them.
Bullies can love fellow bullies, after all.

I would have loved to see Shamrock have a run as champion!!
Him just having a match with Bret where he gets to reverse a Sharpshooter or Sharpshooter attempt into an Ankle Lock would've been awesome.
As Shamrock said, at one point there were serious discussions to have Bret drop the belt to him instead of Shawn, & this is cooraborated by Cornette's version -- But Vince didn't want to set a precedent with the boys where somebody could pick & choose who they wanted to lose the belt to
IMO that's what they should have done. Put Shamrock in the match as a triple threat and have him make Shawn tap out and win the title. Bret would lose it with grace but not get beat in front of everyone. He would either hand the title over respectfully to Ken that night or show up the next night and do a farewell then. Then Ken could hold it a month or two and drop it to Shawn so he can face Austin at Mania. Let Ken have some matches with different folks in between and see if he could handle the load then he coulda been a heel challenge to Austin in 1998 or 1999. There was honestly no reason why he wasn't near the main event those 2 years the dude was awesome.
@@efan2012 and he was OVER. The fans ALL respected him and dude could work. He was a vet from Japan and the boys all got along with him. Really weird how they put a ceiling on him.
@@efan2012 Looking back, I think Bret was so over & beloved in Canada that even if he lost cleanly to Michaels in Montreal, there woulda been no shame or negativity to it -- Bret woulda looked like even more of a hero. Of course we all know that Bret had his personal reasons for not wanting to job to Shawn, but in the long run he woulda looked like that bigger better man
I love how he says âwhereâs the trustâ
All the people who say Vince did the right thing, ask yourself if you were a wrestler at that time. How would u feel

@@Sayed36870 It was def. Not right what happened him. It could have handled better by everyone involved. But at the end of the day itâs entertainment. Vince put the belt on him and he can take it away. Make no mistake the actual owner of that belt is Vince. Brett didnât actually win anything.
Vince purchased Stampede Wrestling from Stu Hart. Bret cMe with the negotiations and contract signing. He employed Bret and made him who he was, made him wealthy. Vince wanted Bret to drop the belt, Bret refused. I love Bret but it's all about business man. If the boss tells you to drop the belt here or there, you drop the belt here or there.

All of these wrestlers that said they would have done the job, have no idea how they would have reacted until it happened to them.
IMO opinion (with 25 years hindsight), I think that if Bret had just dropped the belt clean to Shawn in Montreal, he would've ended up coming off like even more of a hero & icon to the Canadian faithful -- but his pride & ego where telling him otherwise because of all the BS going on between him & HBK. Bret was totally over in Canada as we all know, so there woulda been no shame in losing

Ken is a living legend and deserves to be more recognized by both the WWE & UFC.
Now with the merger they should be celebrating all the talent from each sport that dared to step outside their comfort zone.
Guys like OâHaire / Shamrock / Tough Enough winner Daniel Puder etc should be hailed and put on a fuckin pedestal man.
We all know the Legacies built by Lesnar and Rousey ; itâs time WWE pay respects for those individuals that paved the way for them to do so.
Was this filmed in 2022? He still looks jacked. The early UFC fight vs. Gracie was terrific.

Nice interview and Ken Shamrock looks great for his age, still has huge biceps.
When it comes to wrestling philosophy, Mick Foley and Bret Hart. Genius wrestling IQ
Scott Hall too.
And Jake "the snake"Roberts

Bretâs crew would have laid a serious beat down on Shawnâs crew.
For sure. Severn and Ken proved they could fight for real. Just those two guys alone would be good to break 2-3 peoples legs or arms each before anyone knows what the hell happened.

I never knew Brett wanted to drop the championship to ken I wish he had would have been interesting to see
The whole screwjob could have been avoided.
What a crazy atmosphere that would have been that night in that dressing room.
Kind of weird how Owen dies at a PPV called "Over the edge"... Pretty masonic.
It's all planned out just like in 2002 at the "No Way Out" PPV that brought in the "NWO".
Whoa never thought about that
đŹđł
Ken was one of my favorite dudes in wrestling during that time... they should have worked with him more
That is true. Bret did say in a shoot that he wanted to drop it to Ken.
Dan Severn has the perfect Sully look from uncharted
WWE caught a huge break in that WCW completely and absolutely ruined and botched Bret Hart. Imagine back in the 80s, a prime Hulk Hogan on the Iron Shiek stint, coming over to WCW. I will never forget that absolute blunder of a Monday night nitro; ladies and gentlemen, Bret Hart. They didn't know what to do with him. So much potential, it was ridiculous.
At the very least they couldâve continued Bretâs Canada feud with the Clique, ala the NWO. Shit, throw in traditional NWA/WCW contingent and the Four Hoursemen into that feud and youâd have years of storylines.
They should of definitely had him come as a surprise and put him in a match not as a special guest referee đ đ
WCW definitely had an opportunity to poach a lot of WWF viewers like myself at that moment after the screwjob. I remember tuning in and just feeling nothing from what I was seeing Bret do down there. While WWF were continuing to capitalise on it.
Did WCW really ruin Bret?
His debut was completely flat and pointless, and yes WCW didn't seem to come up with any great ideas for him, but according to interviews with people at WCW Bret rarely came up with any ideas either.
But it's Wrestling, so who knows what's really true.
In any case, Bret Hart in WCW could and should have been magic, but it just wasn't a good fir for either party.
The irony of all that although it was way later in hid career but the same would happen with Sting.
Shamrock is morphing into Al Bundy. đ€

Why does it seem like Dan is sizing up Ken this whole interview lol
Look at all the wrestlers who died while working for wwe, and the ones who died afterwards. People still think Benoit killed his family and himself. I don't buy it, never did.
Taskmaster got his revenge
Kevin sullivan booked his wife to be with chris as his valet for starters.. Chris&Nancy fall for each other, along with Chris winning Big Gold an still leaving the next night to raw, alot of us watching back then knew he would get his revenge for embarrassing him twice
He prolly got Brian Pillman taken out for his I respect you booker man, an walking out the company, forget the ring or arena
Would have been nice to see Shamrock as champion. Even as a placeholder for Shawn to eventually get the belt.
They totally should have done more with him, they could have ran with the âWorldâs most dangerous Manâ angle for a long time.

Yep! Ken wore a metal cup during that fight because he knew Severn would do exactly that.
Book em wit got dam shamrock
I'm curious how long a fight between Shamrock and Haku would be lol
I couldâve sworn I had heard past renditions of this story from everyone else there and when Vince walked into the locker room initially, Bret was showering, and he told Vince to leave before he got done showering or he was going to punch Vince. And Vince stayed, and Bret clocked him in front of whatever boys were there. So idk what this version of the story is that Ken is telling.
Davey and Owen were in the room as were the agents and Shane.
Davey was there twice
Severn looks at Ken like "YOU ARE SUCH A BULL SHITTER".

no bullshit detected -- granted that everyone involved adds their own personl POV spin to it, but Shamrock's basic story sounds about exactly how the sh*t unfolded...And Severn looks at everyone like that.
@@Tarantulisimo You were there?
When I was younger, I was really upset about the Montreal Screw Job. But looking back, it all made business sense.
Vince couldn't have someone walk off with the WWE title to then compete in another franchise.
What was Brett thinking? I get it he didn't like Shawn, but he had to drop the belt before leaving.
I keep waiting for Severn to turn heel on Ken and submit him during this interview. - Ed Baker
Going crosseyed can be humbling.
Can't say if Ken Shamrock was telling the truth about Bret Hart was willing to drop the belt to him. I know Bret was willing to drop the belt to either Undertaker or Stone Cold. Bret even said during an interview from way back.
He had a whole list of people besides those two including Owen and Foley. He said he would've dropped to Brawler over Shawn.
The story is absolutely true. Bret wanted to drop the title to Ken who wouldâve lost to Shawn in the later month.
@@gregggartside2053 That would have made more sense but no Vince just had to screw him.
@@mugabi9502 there was rumor the title was going to change hands on The War Zone in October of 97(?). Bret wrestled Ken to end the night and attempted to lock in the Sharpshooter when Ken rolled it into the ankle lock. It's crazy that WWE didn't have anything better for freaking Shamrock and Severn (who were there at about the same time too) back when they were white hot, it really feels like it was a sabotage job bafflingly, as if WWE already thought of them as competition BEFORE they were actual competition.
Severn's animosity toward Ken during this 8-minute answer? 100 out of 100! Jesus Christ. I think this explains why Dan didn't do the *in-person* interview with Frye and Shamrock a few months ago (after this). They are friendly now, but during *this* interview, Severn can't stay calm (he wasn't settled). Fin.
Tito Santana vs Ricky Steamboat...Kurt Angle vs Ken Shamrock.

Good one Bret.
Serves him(Vince) right
shamrock got punished the way ahmed was, when shamrock joined the corporation it was clear he was moved to midcard status next to bossman
This point about trust in the ring might be the most interesting and reasonable take on why the Montreal Screwjob was the wrong way to go about business.
sucks we never got Shamrock vs Kurt Angle
Work would have made perfect sense for everybody: Vince, WWE, Shawn and Bret. Work is the logical explanation. They all knew this was going down. Bret didnât like it but thatâs to bad.
Dude they're getting younger
I heard that he was wanting to drop the belt to either stone cold or undertaker the next night
It was a real shoot
Imagine Ken coming back to face Brocck in early 2000s
Insanity that some people think that The Montreal Screw job was a work.
They probably believe that Santa Claus is real.
I never knew that Bret wanted to drop the Championship to Ken Shamrock. I always thought Bret just didn't want ti drop the WWF title in Montreal.
Bret told Vince he'd drop it to shamrock or Austin on the Monday the issue was HBK was total prick Bret dropped it to him at the previous WM 12 iron man match but when Hbk had to drop it back to Bret at WM 13 Shawn suddenly looses his smile and doesn't do the honours plus Bret said to Shawn I'm happy to put you over Shawn replied I won't do the same Watch rivalries dvd Jim Ross interviews both together tells you all that happened
He didn't want to drop it to that dirty god-damned little bastard Shawn
Shamrock tells a completely different story, appeasement he asked to stay in there and was told to leave, and there was a large group in there when the fight happened
I think Undertaker's version is more plausible
Yeah Ken has taken too many punches to the head...he lacks quite a bit of memory from many different accounts of what happened in the dressing post SS97
Funny how someone says something and everyone follows Dies and Raz were essentially with Shawn Which is where this comment originated from
Or maybe perhaps some left when Vince said, "get out" and some stayed. Could be possible.
@@YoSoyDaddy yeah there were definitely some that stayed behind. Undertaker was one of them that stayed. I do think Owen and Davey left because in the wrestling with shadows documentary if I recall I think I remember Owen asking Bret if he knocked Vince McMahon out with a punch. Dan has barely aged
Out of every other wrestler. Vince decides to book Hart to lose the belt to Michaels. The one person he had the most problems with. I wouldâve slapped the shit out of vince too.
I don't blame you.
Here's the thing about the Montreal fiasco. Vince, for one, proved that Shawn was his boy. From what I remember reading, it was Triple H who came up with the plan. If not a significant part of it. Shawn's book...Heartbreak and Triumph....basically admitted that. Now, Vince should've had greater faith in Bret Hart. His whole deal was fearing if Bret would show up on WCW TV and drop the then-WWF World Title in a trash can. Similar to what Madusa did. Eric Bischoff denies he would have allowed it to happen, but Madusa was WWF women's champion inactive, and she got away with dropping Vince's property in a trash can...live on Nitro. So who can say if the world championship could have wound up that way. I agree Vince should've been slapped, to wake himself up. Bret Hart was trusted. And he 30 days in his contract, so he had the right to deny dropping title to hbk.
@@christopherwisniewski9139 he also has creative control in the last 30 days of his contract
They should have worked it out where Shamrock causes a DQ in the Survivor Series match and then Brett drops the title to him the next night. Brett leaves, Shamrock and Michaels feud over the belt.
What's the "Owen thing?"
So it was all pre planned?

Lol nice try
I watched that Dark Side episode again last night. That shit was shady as hell. Especially since they rehearsed with the proper clip.
A work? No, but Vince McMahon clearly likes to show who is boss, and not just over WWE. He hired Eric Bischoff for the sole purpose of showing him who the real genius was in wrestling in his own mind. He had Triple H go over Sting, who became a star from WCW, with a Sledgehammer at Wrestlemania. Brett and Shawn could have gotten along but there was a serious ego clash going on. Shawn is like "it's my time I am the star" and Brett did drop the belt to him previously in that Ironman match. I don't recall Shawn ever doing the job for Brett. Shawn subsequently did the job for Austin and also a couple of mania matches vs. Undertaker. He did a Summerslam job for Hogan. The Montreal thing didn't have to happen, it was Vince showing who was boss. Then when the Owen tragedy occurred, which was complete negligence on the part of the WWE, well, Vince isn't in charge after all, it's a show. A show with credibility but still a show. Teach that to your kids.
Severn quietly fantasizing about how he would have taken Vince McMahons arms off and beat him with them if he ever screwed him over like that.
