How I Got Into Product Management with NO EXPERIENCE!!!

  • Lot's of people think that you need product experience before landing your first product job, but that's not always the case! A lot of companies are hiring for product associates that just have the raw materials to become a great product manager.
    As I mentioned in this video, once I did start in my first product job, the company I worked for enrolled me in a lot of training including:
    * Exponent - www.tryexponent.com/?ref=alis...
    * Pragmatic Marketing - www.pragmaticinstitute.com/
    * Scrum Master Certification - www.cprime.com/learning/cours...
    * Design Thinking Training - www.ideou.com/pages/team-trai...
    * SQL Training - www.udacity.com/course/data-a...
    * Tableau Training - www.udacity.com/course/data-a...
    * Product Manager Nanodegree - www.udacity.com/course/produc...
    Before getting my job, I also used a tool called Balsamiq to practice creating wireframes - which really got me in the product mindset!
    My product book recommendations:
    Cracking the PM Career Ladder: amzn.to/3qlWtPC
    Cracking the PM Interview: amzn.to/3LhYzYF
    Inspired by Marty Cagan: amzn.to/36TotD6
    The Mom Test: amzn.to/3wJ4oKO
    My Technology:
    Keyboard: amzn.to/40dtvRy
    Mouse: amzn.to/3lhDR3U
    Microphone: amzn.to/409Y9Lu
    Camera: amzn.to/3LtVacW
    Light: amzn.to/3LtVacW
    Hope this video helps!!!

      I'm interested in signing up for some PM courses that teach general skills such as road mapping, sprints, Tableau, SQL as well as building a personal project. But a friend told me that paying for any courses is just a waste of money and I should just focus on my project. Would you agree?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  Před 3 lety +8

      @@Edefrem That's a great question! If you're able to land product interviews (and even a job) without doing any of those training - that's awesome! However - if you find it hard to land an interview or job, it might be worth the money to invest in one pragmatic marketing course, or a scrum master certification. Also - that's great that you're working on your own project! Good luck with it!!!

I realized that I want to switch into product management this semester, as I enjoy coding, but I have no business background. I’m taking AI courses and am almost done with an interaction design certification from UCSD. How would you recommend building experience my senior undergrad year + how to get a product management internship? Would a masters help?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  Před 3 lety +3

      That's really cool that you are making the switch! First - given you will have coding and interaction design certifications I would say that you are already a great candidate for *at least* a product intern role. You don't have to always have coding experience, but it never hurts :) You could also consider taking a business course if there is one offered at UCSD, though to be honest, you may not need it (and I also don't think you need a master's). I would recommend that you read some product books (highly recommend Inspired by Marty Cagan, which emphasizes some of the business aspects of product), joining product Slack communities, and maybe attending ProductCon virtual conferences - which will all help you understand the product role really well. Then, I would say you're probably ready to start applying!

      I'm afraid I don't know about product management outside of Europe. However, I would give you the tip to look for jobs or internships in product management at larger newspapers or publishing houses. Here you could certainly shine due to your studies and your background as a journalist.
      I did an apprenticeship in retail before I started my studies. During my studies, I did several internships and part-time jobs within the same industry, but in different jobs. Because of my industry experience, I was able to get a job in the same industry in product management. I don't need programming skills for my job. It is in the service sector. • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  Před 2 lety +4

      Hi Dhwani! It can feel really hard... Even as an experienced PM, my job searches can take many months. You can grow your PM skills by reading PM books, maybe thinking of a market problem and ideating on a solution (doing customer interviews, mocks... etc.), and you can also consider taking courses (like Pragmatic Marketing). I would say in order to land an interview, you have to be persistent, and write good cover letters that explain why you would be a great PM even if you don't have traditional PM experience. I hope this is helpful. You got this!

    hi! i’m a new grad nurse & im alrdy annoyed at how stagnant the field of medicine is. it seems like it’s the most work with the least compensation. what would you recommend for someone transitioning to tech from healthcare?

      Look into being a healthcare business analyst or even a data analyst & pivot from there.

      @@AlisaHaman This app was just a personal project which i did to understand how android app development works, still i can use it as an experience? I spent 3-4 months to make the app.

      @@sohamnair9360 Hi, I don’t have a degree and I didn’t have much product management experience at all. I love start ups and the excitement. Anyways I had my Instagram public and I was helping friends set up a Spartan race meet up thing then helping other friends set up a CrossFit competition thing. Any who I was basically doing a lot of product management for free and didn’t realize it. That impressed a lot of managers i literary brought it up because they asked me to tell them about myself. So i basically told them what I do in my free time and what I’m into. If I had made an app and it was in the App Store OMG! I would put that link in every application that would allow me to link additional information. I’m pretty sure this would impress a lot of people or at least get you an interview. I can’t promise anything…. You gotta use EVERYTHING in these streets to be seen and stand out. I wish you the best keep on keeping on!

    What would you recommend for an undergraduate student to get a product management internship?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  Před 2 lety

      Great question! My suggestion would be to research smaller startup tech companies in your area. They are often looking for summer interns in all depts, including product :)
      Also, large tech companies have more formal internship programs you can apply to!

    Hey what would you suggest for a DBA switching over to PM?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the question! If you are already in a tech company, I would suggest meeting with PM's at your company to learn about the job. There are also database products where you have domain expertise and could transition more easily into a PM role. Something like MongoDB for example!

    Hi Alisa, I just found your channel and I'm loving it! I have a degree in MEM from Duke and have about 5 years of experience working as a data/business data analyst. I would love to switch to PM because I find it very exciting and also would like to switch to something a little less technical. Since I've already been working for some years now, I don't want to start off as an associate. Any tips on how I can switch without essentially "demoting" myself? I have experience ideating, building and maintaining PowerBi dashboards and I know that is considered a transferrable skill! Let me know if we can connect on LinkedIn for the same or would love to see a video from you on this topic! :)
