I was wondering if you have any experience with Product Managers in a Movie Industry. I'm a film director myself, but as you know, there is no money in film industry unless you work in Hollywood. You are right, the product manager role assumes you work 24/7. Initially, it was very tempting to be a PM, but then I realized it requires lot of work, generally just sitting with engineers and make sure they do their work. Regarding a pay? It isn't such high as lead developers make. One good thing is you do not need to code and be a very technically savvy, but still you can't be a person who has no clue as a sales person.

Having direct reports is great it means you have grown as a PM when it happens , however whats more important is to grow in your role as PM to ensure that you are ready to lead people .In my opinion people should not rush to have direct reports , leading people is not easy for some PMs because leading people means you no longer just responsible for your own performance as PM , you are also responsible for other people’s performance as well which can be a challenge . PMs are great influencers , they have to influence a lot of people but it takes more than influence to lead people , 10 years doing the same role in the same or at different companies and experiencing different challenges prepares you exactly for that .There is nothing worth witnessing than a PM who is extremely adept at all aspect of the PM profession …. people management /project management /product management / Creating a vision /clear understanding of their product and the various metrics etc. you name it
