Vintage Motive Power on Freight - Florida Central

- Let's take a trip to the past with an EMD GP30 built for the L&N in the early 1960's and a Clinchfield F7 built in the late 1940's lugging some loaded steel cars in the sunshine state.
Seeing this kind of power in freight service is rare, but seeing it on a modern mainline is a treat to witness. Here we chase L&N 1030 and Clinchfield 800 up the Florida Central with over 20 loaded steel flat cars from Orlando to Eustis. The two 567 equipped motors pull hard to get the tonnage over the line, and performed spectacularly. The sound of roaring EMD 2-stroke engines and a Leslie RS-5TRRO horn wakes up central Florida on a hot day in September.
L&N 1030 and Clinchfield 800 are both locomotives originating from the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum located out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Both of these locomotives can be seen pulling excursions for the Orlando & Northwestern Railway with trips departing Mount Dora and Tavares. L&N 1030 was the common freight power on the old line from Oak Ridge to Blair and pulled many excursions of the Secret City Scenic and provided the air for the Oak Ridge Horn Honk. Clinchfield 800 was restored to its as-delivered livery by CSX Transportation in Huntington, West Virginia and was featured in the lead of the 2017 Santa Train down the Clinchfield Railroad.

Yay, they put an accurate horn on 1030. Now it can sound like a real Seaboard unit.
Agreed
LESLIE RS5T. I grew up hearing that horn many times going thru my neighborhood.
That horn would have Bigfoot scared shitless!
Oh my gosh.
Man!!! That engineer loves that horn!!! I love the SBD Property sign on the little trestle. So Cool.
Im sad to see 1030 leave oak ridge but im also happy to see it continue to run the rails hopefully for many years to come.
"The sound of roaring EMD 2-stroke engines and a Leslie RS-5TRRO horn wakes up central Florida on a hot day in September. "
For some reason I imagined an old man waking up thinking he's back in 1972 and expecting to see a Seaboard freight roll by.
That horn on the 1030 is ear candy.
Was great chasing that with you and hanging out that day man. Hope to see ya soon
Likewise!
The oscillating headlights remind me of the old Southern Pacific I saw as a kid in Houston in the late '70s. I miss the SP.
I like how that lead unit have a rotating mars light
Very nice. Great video!!
Beautiful restoration on Clinchfield F7. Wish I could see it in person. Nice catch.
Great video Aaron!
Just subscribed! Excellent video!! Keep up the good work!
Just found your CZcams today. Love it :)
Pull rope on that horn replaced daily
@American Educational Archive no...not at all.
Aaron, nice video man.
Nice Family Lines Systems Locomotive (CSX).
The entrio horn was added to rails unlimed Penn centerl high nose locomotive
any info on where the cars are in Eustis and what days we can catch them with freight movements?
I really hope the Caldwell County Railroad and FC give their old Seaboard System locomotives fresh paintjobs.
I would have put the f unit up front
....the f unit is an f-9. not an f-7. the 9 had a grill before the portal, the 7's portal was before the grill.
love these old gals still workin' after 50-60 years!
Its neither actually, Built as an F3 in 1948, rebuilt to F7 specs in the late 50's. The Clinchfield called them F3Au's.
I have a question about the location of 12:00, is that Hermit Smith road? I'm confused by it because I've never seen that hill and from google earth it looks like it slopes down at that point not up.
Sounds like the railroad I live nearby
EMD BAYBEE! No other railroad Diesel Electric unit manufacturer has been able to achieve the same staying power. ALCO would be a distant second and GE....pfft FORGET IT.
horns still work
I don't know which paint scheme i like better, the family lines or Seaboard System. When the Family Lines reincorporated as the Seaboard System in 1985, they should have called themselves Seaboard System Family Lines.
#1030 Should be Cosmetically restored to her original L&N Livery and move to Ravenna Ky, to be part of the Kentucky Rail Heritage Center collection Since the Right of Way there is former L&N Trackage.
That good oh F UNIT it would be to see it jabe a mars light
Aren't they going home? At Least 800?
I love it! But I think #1030 could use a fresh paint job!
Standby for paint soon.
I'm guessing it'll be Seaboard System.
Nope. L&N. Italics with pin striping. If we ever do a Seaboard locomotive it would have to have been delivered Seaboard.
Aaron Beaubien it was actually ex Seaboard, you guys got it from Oak Ridge Tennessee, this is the famous Oak Ridge horn honk unit. I bet you didn't know this unit once wore a s3j and a s5d.
Unit was built for the L&N from the factory before it was seaboard. That unit has worn over 400 horns.
That GP30 needs a good paint job.
I have rarely seen a locomotive more in need of a good paint job...
I don't understand comments like this, it's an operational GP30 still in Seaboard system paint but you want it painted. SMH.
@@keonisan It would raise the historic value, attract public attention. and make it something to be proud of. Would Chevy put images of a 55 Bel Air that looks like a Jalopy into an advertisement?
I kinda have to agree. 1030 looks like it was just saved from the torch, but it’s been running for years. The least they could do is give it a fresh coat.
1030 is getting a new paint job soon in L&N colors
How do you know?
I am confused here. Why did you not show the entire train? How many cars were there? That’s a pretty heavy train for those grades... I guess? Hard to tell since we never saw the whole train? Why did you not show the switching moves at Tool Works???
It's hard to get ahead of the train in a chase if I were to stay watching the whole train go by. There were 18 to 20 cars loaded with steel I-Beams. They did not switch Tool World that day. All they did was switch the power out and split the crossings.
Don't kill me for saying this, but I think Clinchfield 800's new horn sounds far better than it's m5.
If I am correct I think its a M3. But this is just me I like the M5 better
M-3H
Sooooo... what’s the deal here? Were they sold off from museums?
Great video! They look like fuel hogs for sure
They are pretty lean compared to our SD45 in terms of fuel consumption.
There's an SD45 in central Florida?
Nope. Just ours at Oak Ridge.
Why are these units in Florida? Shouldnt they be in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
They are on lease to O&NW. There is plenty of other power at Oak Ridge to take care of the freight on the line, so leasing a couple out wont hurt the operation.
@@NSAaron oh okay
what is up with the overlay over the whole video it’s unwatchable
They need to do better maintenance in their rails ugh
The rails are fine. They need ties under them though.
Quit taking pictures it’s annoying
very few things more annoying than a camera shutter. So pretentious
Ok listen, blowing that horn on a branch line that loud engines light is stupid ok...Eustis already has noise rule to blow lightly. No wonder the residents are complaining.
FRA dictates the blowing of horn, not the city. If they have an ordinance for quiet zone or light blowing which I’ve never heard of then it must be approved by the FRA and the state.
