- This episode of my abandoned building renovation shows tile installation in a huge shower & bathroom. Thanks again to Noom! Click noom.com/modus... to take your free Noom Evaluation.
For the renovation of my master bathroom in the (formerly) abandoned building, I used a variety of tile sizes, including 12x24 large format porcelain tile, 24x24 large format porcelain tile, and a granite mosaic tile. This video shows how to do entire tile installation process for this massive bathroom. The bathroom includes a massive curbless walk-in shower, and a fresstanding tub.
NOTE: We used granite mosaic tiles on the shower floor, and I forgot to mention that I will be sealing these tiles - a must for granite in a shower!

you should try something new and different in the next video no reason just for fun!
Hey, next time when grouting, use the back of a drill bit to give a little convex score. It makes it way more professional looking than the simple sponge method. Also you could use wider grout lines, which have their charm as well ...
Incredibly disappointing choice for a sponsor.
Wood feature wall!
What vacuum pick up tool did you use? and would you recommend it?
Wood slat feature wall would be a perfect touch.
Hey a navy guy here in the comments
Agreed
Wooooddddd slatttttttttttt all the way
For sure... 100% agreed
yep its gonna add some contrast and it will look pretty good. When you are taking a shower you will have something interesting to look at. :P
Wood slat for sure, maybe with some color changing COB LED strips built in to illuminate a bit since it's a bit of a darker room. Plus LED's are fun.
Yes! With motion sensors to trigger the lights
I second this.
And a dial to change the color/ mood.
Third this
4th this, especially with the Motion Sensors, and Mood Adjustment controls. If not motion control, maybe Smart LED, with control capabilities for Alexa/Google Home/Smart Phone.
Thanks for the shout out. One of my subs let me know.😊
I’d love to see a wood feature with horizontal slats that extend to the ceiling over the tub and down to the concrete inlet wall that wraps around the whole thing to give the bath a spa vibe! Just picture looking up at all that natural color while taking a bath! You’d probably have to use something treated or for wet use like teak but I think it would really pop in that bathroom.
I vote wood slat feature wall. You already have a lot of cool tones and it would complement the vanity and balance it out more.
The wood slat will look fantastic! Stands out from the grey and black tile but will tie into the vanity nicely. So glad you're doing well after the surgery, been watching you since day one and I'm always excited to see how far you're getting.
I'm just so glad you recovered and are doing so well man. This is one of my favorite YT channels and I'd have been heartbroken if things had gone differently. I love what you do and how you do it, you're a wonderful person and you've brought a ton of joy into my life with this project.
My first thought would have been the wood-slat feature wall, but if the vanity and closet are going to be wood, it could be a wood overload on that side of the room. I think I would use the smaller black tiles behind the tub to tie the room together and it would really make the white tub stand out almost as an art piece.
That wood slat feature wall looks incredible, absolutely the move!
i want to see this building done so bad!
me too!
How about a real moss wall? Grows with the moisture from the air and is a lovely green, and it’s a gorgeous contrast colour
I also immediately thought about a moss wall maybe in combination with the wood slate wall. Would bring a little be of nature in.
It may be just me, but that sounds nasty as heck. Who knows, maybe I'm the one missing out!
@@acoffeewithsatan Moss is actually an incredible clean plant. Moss wall in the shower if put up correctly maintains itself and will not collect dirt or bugs.
@@acoffeewithsatan I thought they sounded weird too until I actually worked with one at my job. They are actually amazing.
Sounded weird at first but now that I read some of the comments I absolutely want to see it happening 😍
Definitely the wood slat feature wall with the shelf.
The hand held in the shower is also great when cleaning the shower walls, it's easier to rinse down the walls without slashing water all over from a bucket or cup.
As a woman, I can confirm that a hand shower head is a must :D
I feel like I am personally connected to this home and series. Can't wait to see the final home. Loved the video Mike bhaiya.
Same. Been watching since before he bought the place.
Oohh, wood slat! I love wood slat feature walls. Just finished building one last weekend!
Has anyone ever mentioned that you have a bright, natural smile whenever you're doing a piece to camera? You just excude joy and positivity, and it makes your already wonderful videos just that much more awesome to watch! Thank you for the time you spend sharing these with us. :D
i have a suggestion for the empty wall in the bathroom and I think a plant wall would look really cool in that area and bring some nature into the room, looking great so far!
Couldn't ask for more perfect timing :D Time to sip some tea and watch the master at work!
Wood slat feature wall as well for me. I believe otherwise, that would be too much mosaic, and I hate reverb in bathrooms. The wood and the area slats will create will definitely help at least a bit.
Sal is an awesome tiler. Good shout-out. If anyone is interested in tiling, Sal is a master.
The wood slats with some LED reveals like the one you showed would look stunning!
gotta say, not a fan of the shower floor tile - I can't unsee the black anti-slip mats that are seen in restaurant kitchen dish pits, everything else looks amazing and would definitely do the wood feature wall
thanks! The tile is definitely a bit of a design risk, but hopefully when all the pieces of the bathroom come together, it will work :)
I thought the same. Maybe because of using the same grey color grout. (black grout might have been better). So def wood for the wall accent. Shower can be cool (in and out, cool tile). But a tub is for tranquility (soft wood)
I wondered about how
Slick all that floor tile is. It’s hard to tell in the video if it’s shiny or not
Glad i'm not the only dish washer that noticed that xD
@@modustrial I do like that you will get more grip for your footing from the more frequent lines of mortar in the actual shower area. Because slipping in the shower is never a good time.
Gotta do a wood slat wall, hands down! Can’t wait to see the finished bathroom!
Also the grouting Timelapse’s were solid AF!!! Want more!
I prefer "niche" over "nook"
As a woman, good looking out with the hand shower, you're absolutely right about women wanting to have the option of showering without wet hair.
As far as the accent wall, I am in favor of the wood slats!
Hand showers are also good for injuries that can't get wet (i.e. stitches, casts, etc.)
For me the big thing is cleaning and being able to rinse using the hand shower instead of trying to throw cups of water at the walls
I love you Modustrial Maker. I have so enjoyed this journey since CZcams recommended episode 1. Peace!
thank you!!
30 years doing Kitchen and baths I put a horizontal slat wall in my wife's bathroom also built the dual sink floating cabinet out of the same oak and installed a vertical wall in the bedroom about 6' wide to house the tv and electric fireplace she loves it.
That looks amazing! Glad to hear your feeling better too. My vote is for the wood wall, that would really set it off
Looking great, and another vote here for option 2 - wood slat wall. Also, my favorite thing in my new bathroom is the LED sensor light under the vanity, that means I don’t fully wake up if I have to ‘go’ in the middle of the night.
Perfection, as usual! The only thing I would have changed is an extra shower niche - never enough space!
Go with the wood on the tub wall. The floor tiles will be too dark IMHO and too busy because each individual tile is so small. The wood sounds great though. Love the channel. 👍
The wood wall is a perfect choice 👌 ,it's clean ,elegant and great contrast color 👌 😊👍💕💕💕
Option 2. a bright & cozy bath area invites the idea of a quality/soothing relaxation after a long busy day to me ^_^
I'd go with the Wood slat feature wall, since the rest of the room is already pretty grey and cold. More black would imo really kill the room. It just gets too cold and emotionless. Wood would really give the place a more luxurious touch and give the in my opinion needed warmth to the bathroom
Oh yeah, my two cents: I feel like the feature wall should be wood, or at least have wood integrated into it in some way. Your bathroom is beautiful, but if every surface is tiled it will feel very cold/harsh regardless of color. Bathrooms should have an element of coziness, and I think wood does a great job of this.
Totally the wood slat. Makes it more organic. I really love the mix between nice tiles and wood.
Can you believe how far you've come? Just a few more areas and you're done. I remember you emptying it out lol. What a long but worthwhile journey.
Stepped up production quality looks great. Love the sneak peek at the progress right at the beginning.
13:56 you can actually buy an aluminium trim that is sloped, i think it looks better that those little slivers and obviously way easier to install. You can rest the glass on top of the profile easily too. It is called Schlüter SHOWERPROFILE-S, but you can find the same profile cheaper from non-premium brands.
Looks great! Also, when you cut a inside corner on a piece of tile you no need to bust out the angle grinder to clean that corner up. Like you did for the corners around your shower niche. You can lift the tile up and use the side of the blade on the saw. Works well and just saves a little step. Some pieces might be to long, but usually not. I did corner shelves in the past as well. I made a slot for the shelf in the wall tiles. cut a square piece corner to corner like a sandwich. Then use motor ton join them pretty side out and stuck them in the slot. Then cut a piece for the front. I used an outside edge for the top. Most can be made from off cuts and it does look slick. I put on down low, middle, and top. Wife liked the low one for shaving her legs. No premade stuff needed and you have a spot for shampoo and soaps. Just make sure to use a level and slightly angle shelf down to shed water.
Hi from Great Britain I call it a niche, it's nice to see you back healthy again, and your home is really coming along now, looking really good.
Definitely go with the wood slat, not only will it have a built-in shelf, but it will tie together nicely with the vanity and not be the same tile as where you shower. That will make it feel more special within the room
not being a "nay-sayer" just giving 2 cents... I manufacture waterproof membranes for showers. when patching the holes after you removed your guide board you should do your best to patch with the membrane material. throw some mortar if you need filing, wait for it to dry, then put the waterproof membrane on top. silicone is a bond breaker and the water-based mortar will not bond well to those areas. though small, it could cause a problem if the are becomes saturated frequently.
Agree - the whole point of the membrane is one solid layer of waterpoofing, to seal the wall. To have holes, even if filled with different material, defeats the purpose. Also, the circular drain on the floor seemed to be on top of the waterproofing. I'd have concerns about water egress between the drain and the waterproofing.
I like the tiny tiles on the shower floor, it reminds me of a public pool I used to go to as a kid which had metal grates as the flooring at the showers.
Love your positivity, it's a nice "pick me up" and enjoying following the renovation too!
Only thing that bugged me is that the dark tiles in the niche and on the floor are perpendicular instead of parallel. Looks amazing though! Wood slat wall definatly seems like the better option to me.
I call it a niche. Also I think the Wood Slat feature wall would look amazing but for long term the Mosaic wall will be less hassle and maintenance.
Wood slats for the wall. Thanks for sharing your work with us!
Nice to see you recovering so well. Take good care of yourself!
Wood slats feature wall. I feel like it wouldn't be a "feature wall" if you were to use the same mosaic tile you used in the shower. The wood would give it a nice, warmer tone and it's different.
I have been watching since ep. 01, love the progress. Did you consider heated floors?
I really like the idea of a wood slat feature wall and shelf. This bathroom is awesome
wood slats, yes yes yes... very nice choice of tiles and nice job! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Having a hand shower is nothing to do with not getting hair wet - need a hand-held so you can wash your bits. That goes for all genders! :-)
Wood feature wall. Nice and warm. All black, way too oppresive.
In my case it's both ... plus I hate having water run all over my face. And with my hand held, I can vary the spray pattern for a bit of spot massage (on my back).
Well no, if you have long hair like me it's very important not to wash it too often, so that it won't dry out. So he's definitely not wrong about this
i thought it was a totally weird and unnecessary comment of him to do. Anyone can use hand showers for whatever purpose they want :p
I thought it was an adorably pg explanation, but I had a similar thought about the hand shower.
I use it for my doggo. It’s super helpful.
Tile work very much intimidates me. It looks great! You're moving around much better. I see you have healed up quite well! Keep up the good work, man.
Wood feature wall would tie in the vanity. I think your killing it with this bathroom!
Great video! My husband and I both agree that the wood slat accent wall behind the tub would be great!
Every tiling video I see brings me closer to thinking I could do that for my reno sometime. Thanks for going step-by-step. As for the poll. Wood slat + floating shelf, EZ
Wood Slat Feature Wall for sure! Great work on the tiles, really looks awesome.
Wood slat feature wall for sure. I also like the idea of led light strip behind to create some mood lighting
Wood slat feature wall looks dynamic and would tie in well with the wood floating shelf vanity.
Sals youtube is great! another tip when cutting mosaic tile is to put a floor tile etc under the mosaic tile, and raise the blade on the saw. So the blade only cuts 1/4 of the way through the base tile. Keeps the mosaic from wanting to cut out of square as it tend to want to dip into the slide gap of the saw. Looking good! Love watching your videos
Wood wall sounds awsome I’m a fan of multiple materials that go together
Wood slat with a black background( or dark) feature wall with leds in between the slats.
Definitely wood slat, it just fits and looks way better than mosaic tiles for such a big wall. Rest of the bathroom looks amazing!
I think the wood slat wall wood brighten the room up and help with the transition to the sink then shower area. Definitely run the slats vertical to contrast the horizontal shelf.
The wood is the way to go, nice classic style added to your bathroom.
I love the fact that you're using Crayola Crayons to mark the tiles.
Wood feature wall for sure. I loveeee that black tile but the space needs some warming. Plus it would be really cool for a texture pop as well!
Wood slat would go perfect with the free standing tub. Amazing job man, it looks beautiful.
The wood slat wall would be a nice feature wall. The tiles look great!
The wood slat feature wall would be the perfect accent to the monochromatic feel of the room.
The wood slat, no doubt! It’ll go along with the vanity, leaving also the shower floor as a contrast in the bathroom.
Thank you for thinking about the corners as one piece! I was trying to explain this to our tiler as he had put up our kitchen tile with little pieces in each corner, not making one full tile, and he wasn’t getting it at all.
wood slat would look awesome, i thought about that before you even mentioned it, glad to see your doing well after your problems too
Yep that tile idea is good, I have cut wood with scrap wood underneath for a cleaner cut several times
Great progress and great work on the tiling too... I particularly like the shower drain. For me it's a niche. As for the feature wall, definitely the wood option and some RGB LED lighting that you can change the colour of, or set it to fade between colours.
I think the wood slat feature wall will be perfect to break the monotony of the grey and black, plus i think it will give it that kind of spa look that would be great for the bathroom. And in addition to that, it will go with the wood vanity that you mentioned earlier on in the video, if I am not mistaken.
Wood slat feature wall for the tub wall. Love the look so far!
Awesome job on the tiles. For the feature wall I think you should get the wooden slats. It will go nicely with the vanity and break the dark a bit
Great job, as always. Love the slat feature wall, think it will look awesome and give the room warmth
Man, the wood slat feature wall would be so nice! I think the warmth and the "nature" aspect of a wooden feature wall is going to crontast very well with the more concrete/industrial aspect of the rest of the bathroom. The renovation is getting to an awesome point and I'm loving it!
Woodslat feature wall would be perfect and tie in really well with the vanity!
Hi, the tile job you did is absolutely awesome, your not easy. It is going to look great when it’s done, take care.❤️🇨🇦 I think the wood would look so cool.
Tip about Red-Gard. Good product if used correctly, meaning using enough of it. Mnfct wants a film thickness of .090” (roughly 3/32”). It takes a lot of product in multiple coats to get there… a typical 60x30 tile tub surround requires three gallons, so a big project like this considerably more. If you don’t use enough you might as well not use any as a thin coat will actually wreck the bond of your thinset to the substrate.
My vote would be for the wood slat feature wall. I think that will look awesome.
I love the wood slate feature wall look instead of the mosaic tile
Wood slat feature wall sounds really nice and relaxing..
Take the wood slat for the wall by the bathtub. That is a very good contrast on the dark tail. Greetings from Germany
Wood slat feature wall would look incredible and match the vanity!
wood slat wall would be the way to go for sure, but if you do end up choosing the tile, orient the little rectangles vertically!
Great build! I love the design!
definitely the wood slat for warmth in contrast to the cold grey tiles.
Love getting these notifications for new videos from you..... 🥳🥳🥳 It's like Xmas!! So glad your health is better and healing. I vote for the wood wall to match the sink area.
It's just always good to have a hand shower in case you need it. helps with lots of different things.
I vote for the wood slat feature wall with a floating shelf. It's looking great, so far.
The wood slat feature wall will definitely warm up the room.
You do amazing work. When you start, I think, "I should try that!" Then, as it goes on and on and I realize the amount of work--and math--that goes into it, I decide hiring a professional would be much better for me.
I've been a fan from the beginning and it's exciting for me to see everything really coming together--I can only imagine how satisfying it is for you. Well done, sir!
The bathroom tile is beautiful 🥰.
Nook is for people, niche is for things. Niche!
I like the wood slats idea, but with so many edges and fibers in the wood, sounds like it could be tricky to keep clean or even mildew free in wet environment.
