  • In this episode, we build a DIY parameteric wave handrail for my studio staircase. Pre-order the JACKERY Solar Generator 1500 Pro with 15% OFF: bit.ly/3GXXVAd Winter Backup Special Deal with up to 30% off: bit.ly/3CRl6tz
    We start by explaining what parametric design is and how it can take your woodworking to the next level. This is a great woodworking tip, and this DIY stair railing is a great example of how powerful parametric design can be for woodworking. We also show how to make the steel frame for the staircase - welding the steel frame in place, and talking proper safety measures while welding at the job site.

    Great book for a beginner . czcams.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

    Looks amazing. The missing piece that you filled in just made the flow work. My OCD would be driving me mentally, though with that tiny bit of black showing. I'm sure it's correct and fits the wave pattern it just draws your eye and looks like a mistake IMHO.

    Hey Boss,
    I realize with the editing, you may have taken out some of these parts of the process. But in case it hasn't been said, you can do tack welding to avoid the problem with the middle post again. you can do a tack weld either side of the post, check your measurements, and finish the weld.
    This works in the process, so you can break the tack welds if you fucked up. with the height, the leverage of the piece is enough to break it. and clean up is just 2 tacks, as opposed to what happened.
    Hope this reaches you well, project looks great.

    • @carl4043
      @carl4043 Před rokem +3

    • @JosephSirkinov
      @JosephSirkinov Před rokem

      @@carl4043 I guess that more depends on corners, weight, amount of people lifting.

    • @carl4043
      @carl4043 Před rokem +1

      @@JosephSirkinov absolutely, but that simple frame was not heavy at all.
      And I agree, but it would have been simpler and easier to do all the layout, including the tabs, and all the welding (except the three posts to the floor) in the shop.
      So it appears to the DYIer that the job is more difficult than it is

    You can also use a projector, and trace out the slices that way, if you’re careful to have a 4’x8’ rectangle in the image you’re projecting, you can use the trial version of mad mapper or resolume arena to get the aspect perfect, and render a surprisingly accurate product

    My favourite thing about your projects is the deliberate choice of an industrial aesthetic.
    The biggest plague of my own projects is perfectionism, getting everything just right, minimizing the design until it's the simplest shapes, colors and layouts that can be reached, and then still, things not quite coming out exactly as I plan.
    The non-perfectionist nature of your work makes any 'imperfection' (whether it's the weld transitions or exposed sheet ply in this project) shine as a part of the design intent, while allowing you to spend the bulk of your time on the part that matters most to you - using your medium to express your artwork through a functional part of your home. Because you're not afraid to build and finish your projects, you continue to refine and improve your art with every one, allowing you to use even less while accomplishing so much more.
    It's really made me rethink what luxury means, and how beauty is so accessible with time and effort.

    She's a real beauty! I'm not sure this was an intentional learning moment on your part, or just coincidence that aligns with my own tastes, but I feel like the elegance of this piece is much better due to the single natural color, allowing the shape and shadow to define all the depth. The old piece you did for your `Modustrial Maker` sign that is behind you I think doesn't work as well due to all the colors fighting with the beautiful parametric shapes. Awesome work as always; really enjoyed seeing the process!! Can't wait to see what's next!

    A little late now, but if you do anything similar in the future consider making the railing bolt on instead of welding directly to the structure. It just makes it so much easier to remove in the future if you want to change things up or try something new, or even if you just need to get the railing out of the way to make moving a large piece of furniture in/out easier. You can weld on landing plates with tapped holes, or weld in place nuts. Otherwise the project looks great.
