  • 1992 NBA Playoffs. Cleveland is up 3-2 coming into Game 6 at Boston. Elimination game.
Nobody knew it then.. not even Bird himself, that a few months later he would be retired and this would be his last NBA game on the parquet.

As a black man who comes from a group of people who look to Jordan and Magic as basketball gods. I really must say I always been a huge fan of Larry Bird and he remains number 1 on my list. I went from buying throwbacks, mimicking his shot, to watching old clips of his career. Larry its an honor to be your fan. Lets not forget Danny Ainge is my guy too

Well said and I agree. Bird looks like a coach more than a player on the court but he's just so smart. His basketball IQ may have been off the chart. I love the Celtics and the starting 5 for most of the 80's. And I know there are some that say the GOAT was Jordan or Lebron or someone. But the GOAT doesn't have to have the most rings (Bill Russel) or score the most points in a single game (Wilt) or perform the way no one had seen before (Michael Jordan) or even be as epic as DR J. For me the GOAT symbolizes the best fundamentals of the game. The one who was the ultimate team player. I'd say without bias or prejudice - it's Larry Joe Bird. No one comes close by this measurement. Okay Magic Johnson. But otherwise its Bird all the way.

People like that almost forget more than younger players have learned. As they're running back up the court their instinctive muscle memory & brains see a play developing & move them accordingly. Even before they realize it themselves. That's time in the game, instinct. That takes years of experience to learn. If you can.

Larry Bird is the player who best showed that if you know the fundamentals of basketball you don't need to be an athletic freak to dominate in the NBA. Here it's this old guy among NBA black athletic players, and he still dominates. When you see him your first thinking is, what's doing that old man there? But when you see him play... if he ever had any kind of athleticism, he would be the greatest player to ever play the game.

Game 3 in Boston went to the Celtics, and game 4 was an epic rebounding classic duel between Parish and Larry Nance. That was a nail biter of a game. Then game 5 back at the Coliseum we blew them out, and we thought we'd finish them off here in Game 6. But obviously the Celtics had one more last ditch effort. Because in game 7 in Richfield we blew them out again. This was the best playoff run we'd had in the franchise's history until we ended up losing to the Bulls and that #23 guy..... until we got our OWN #23.... had to wait another 24 years but we finally did it! ;)

+PorkFrog That's an excellent point. A lot of people don't know his initial debilitating back injuries didn't even come from basketball. He was and is a down home self-described country hick in the best possible sense. He was hard-working to a fault and far too proud to hire others to do work he could do himself. Of course his floor diving and charge-taking style of play also hastened his retirement. It's hard to name anyone in basketball history who gave more of his body to the game of basketball than Bird and the poor man has been suffering with horrible pain ever since.

sort of a happy coincidence that I wrote, 'Top 5 on anybody's list that knows basketball', and then found this quote from someone who probably knows basketball:
'':'Larry was a debate. He still is. People ask me all the time who my top 5 players are, and when I start saying Larry, they interrupt me. They say, 'You've got to be kidding me. He can't play with LeBron James.' I tell them 'You guys don't get it. Larry Bird is far better than any small forward who played the game.' -Michael Jordan, from the book 'When It Was Our Game'
Jordan also said, 'I had to learn what it takes to win in this league from guys like Bird and Magic'
Bird at his peak, like Jordan at his, had to be seen to be believed...there's a tendency for people to talk about players they've never watched anything but clips of, players before their time
but watching whole games is the only way to get a true sense of what a player was
Bird made the game look so easy

People who put wilt on top 5 dont do their research. His era was much more fast paced. he was 5 or 6 inches taller than almost every other center. Sometimes his team would intentionally foul at the end of games to get him more points.
He wouldn't be nearly as good in the modern NBA. whereas most of the other players on the list would be just as good or better in the modern NBA.
