The Pistons had possession and all hope seemed lost for Boston, until Bird read Isiah Thomas' eyes and stole the Pistons guard's inbound pass intended for Bill Laimbeer.
In one fluid motion, Bird corralled the ball, tip-toed the sideline and fired a pass to teammate Dennis Johnson, who converted the game-winning layup

I've never seen anyone make that Dennis Johnson pass off the glass to Bird before. Brilliant play.
They did that play regularly!! DJ and Bird were poetry in motion!! Bird hit it off the glass to himself sometimes too!!

@@stephaniemalley5694 brings back memories of sitting with my Dad watching the Celts. I was 8 in 1987 and I remember my Dad explaining everything to me....the rivalry, Laimbeer and what a douche he was.🤣

That last play is one of the greatest in NBA history.
My team was on the losing end of that play but you're 100% right. One of the most back and forth, intense games I ever watched.

@@loydkline Probably an even more important steal than Bird's, since Havlichek's steal happened in game 7 of the finals when the Celt's had a 1 point lead and the other team had the inbound pass underneath the Celts' basket. His steal saved both the game and the championship.

Danny Ainge is possibly the most underrated athlete ever.
To this day, Danny Ainge is still the only high school athlete to be all american in 3 different sports.
This was fristrating as a celtics fan. Walton and Wedman couldnt play due to injuries and Bird was the only healthy starter. I would have loved to have seen them at full strength against the 87 Lakers.
Not to forget the smile of Walton, right after DJ scored: mix of "we got it", "wtf" and "he's The Legend".
To me two milestone: Rodman coming from nowhere to block,Bird layup, and DJ driving immediately to the hoop for Bird's pass.
DJ was actually lookin to the left behind him just before Bird made his move and almost missed the play. But DJ been around long enough to be able to react and come though with the win.
I think the Pistons should have gone the finals four times in a row and won three in a row the got rob 1988 the won the Kareem was foul Bill Lamber

Had Detroit won this game, they would have closed out the series in 6 and advanced to the finals.
I don't think the 1987 Pistons could have beaten the 1987 Lakers, so hypothetically, the Lakers would have won this year anyway.
However, after a loss in the finals in a prior year, the 1988 Pistons would not have choked against the Lakers. They would have won the close game in either game 6 or game 7, thus preventing the Lakers' repeat.
So vs. the Celtics in the 1987 Finals and vs. the Pistons in the 1988 Finals, that's the best thing that could happen to the Lakers. I wasn't thinking it that way when I watched this game live 36 years ago. I was fumed that Isiah threw the game away.

As a Piston fan I was bummed out but gotta admit that steal was great. I don't think DJ gets enough credit because without his alertness Bird has no one to pass to and falls out of bounds. And Isiah gets too much blame. Laimbeer's got REACH for that ball and at least draw a foul.

I said it then, 2nd year guard Joe Dumars was the problem .
Look at the replay, Dumars along with Rodman and Mahorn ran down court celebrating.
The problem was the ball handler guard who was also a good FT shooter should have gone to the ball .
Laimbeer should not have been in the play but when Isiah was ready to inbound the ball, his backcourt partner never came to the ball, leaving Laimbeer on a island
how possible not a single frame of Parish vs Laimbeer at the end of 2nd quarter?? that was definetely an highlight of the game as possible game (and series) change moment
Watch how crisp the ball movement was back then unlike today's iso ball and too much dribbling. They play as a team back then.
Yea I agree. Soo many players nowadays are playing for their own stats and glory. I could care less about the NBA now. The last time I watched it and gaf was back when Pierce, Garnett, Rondo and Allen won the Finals.

Unlike today's boring game, you didn't see guys standing around the top of the three point arc waiting for the ball. Back then there was an inside game which meant rebounding, passing and movement were important. Today, meh

This when basketball was real and Jordan pippen Wilkins Barkley magic Kareem Clyde doctor j.but Bird parish Kevin the late Dj.and the bad boys you had to really come with your game plan on in the 1980s.
Pistons too inexperienced didn’t know how to handle the big moments yet. Isaiah panicked and didn’t think to call a timeout so they could advance the ball to halfcourt and get a better inbounding passer.
According to Sam Smith in the Jordan rules, Isaiah asked for the ball and even the ref was like don’t you want a timeout and he replied give me the f’ing ball!

A timeout would have been bad for Detroit.
Isiah Thomas wasn't the problem on that play, Joe Dumars was.
Dumars ran down court celebrating instead of running to get the ball to either dribble the clock out or get fouled .
Detroit would have been foolish to allow Boston to sub and extend the game.
Had Dumars gone to the ball, they could have gotten away from a guy trying to foul.
That was poor fundamentals on Dumars from putting his center in position to handle the ball in the back court.
@@123slasher.16 they still would have been better off if he called a timeout vs panicking. No guarantee they wouldn’t steal it after the timeout but Detroit would at least have been more prepared.

Isiah actually did the smart play by going to the ref to get the ball inbounds quickly.
The problem was Laimbeer realized his other guard was on the other in celebrating and he went to the ball not expecting Bird to react
I said it then, Dumars, just like Jalen Rose on Webber's timeout ran from the ball leaving the star players in both instances to make bad plays because of bad fundamentals.

That last play was so lame, Pistons should have won this game.
What a pleasure to watch these old NBA games before the players became the degenerates of today with their tattoos and love of Chinese money. Of note, future degenerate Dennis Rodman is present here kicking open the door for all future degenerates.

People have always been people but there used to be something called dignity towards your fellow man and if you were doing things you wouldn't want to have young impressionable youth influenced by, you had a publicist who would cover up all of your dirties. Yes I think it's always been a part of the human condition to be dirty but when I go to the supermarket and I see people walking around in their pajamas and slippers it only makes me feel more justified in the comments that I made about the degeneration of our culture and in this particular case sports.
