1992 ended up to be Larry Bird’s last season. At the start of the year (go here • Larry Bird vs Magic Jo... for a look at Larry’s mobility in the 91-92 pre season vs #Lakers), no one saw retirement on the horizon for Larry. Bird even signed a 2 year contract extension.
After the 1991 season, Bird underwent drastic back surgery that initially proved very successful. In actuality, the injury #larrybird was getting treated, remained healthy but his back did not.
Midway through the 91-92 season, Larry dove for a loose ball (lost art in today’s #nba) and injured his back again, this time it wasn’t related to the original back problems that started some 5 years earlier. This time the 34 year old legend has to wear a cumbersome back brace that hindered his mobility completely and had him missing 37 regular season games as well as the first round of the playoffs (Celtics swept the Indians pacers).
Bird returned for the ECSF to come off the bench. The Celtics had been rolling under the leadership of Reggie Lewis but had stumbled in this series vs the Cavs.
Larry retook his position in the starting five in the game 6 elimination match at the Boston Garden. This ended up being Larry’s last game at the old garden but not before providing fans w a classic bird buffet of points, assists and rebound.

The "past his healthy prime" Bird was extremely enjoyable to watch, as even though his back issue "limited' his ability to do some things he used to do, he seemed to somehow ramp up the emphasis on his basketball IQ, and maximized what his limited body could do - It was truly inspiring as a kid and a fan. Bird is beyond a Legend in my eyes.

Thank you Armando! The Celtics continue to get very little respect in their own city. I agree, this team was good, could’ve been great if Larry and Kevin stayed healthy, Shaw too. But 90-91 was the last real shot they had at getting back to the promised land. Started season 20-5. Played outstanding til birds back went out before game against knicks at msg in December. I believe Chris Ford was ASG coach that year too. Imagine… had they continued to dominate through 90-91 and got back to the finals. Who would’ve been there waiting for them? It would’ve been the grand finale to a basketball treasure.

Bird could set fire to the floor by just sitting with the fans. GOAT
That's a shame though. Some people shouldn't be allowed to get old😢

Why the dumb “man cave” image with the game on the distance?

Idk. Trying diff things. That old footage is not made to be stretched or manipulated in any way so in the case of #shorts, it’s hard not to pixelate if stretched so it’s almost necessary to have a template backing. You have an idea for a diff background? Would love to hear it. We aren’t even using that one anymore. We are def open to ideas from our viewers
