What you need to remember was this isn't even a Queen concert and they have the whole crowd with them. If you watch the whole Live Aid concert you will understand why Queen stole the show.

I was there.....to the left hand side near the middle.
I was 17. Myself and 3 friends travelled by train from Central Scotland to Kings Cross then walked to Wembley.
We liked Queen but we were there because we were Adam Ant fans.....after that......Freddie and Queen were the the only band we would listen to.
I'm now 55 and Freddie and the boys are still my number 1.

@Patrycja Zając it's still a clear memory. Tickets were £25, which was expensive back then, but considering the stars we saw was well worth it....even Paul McCartney....what a day and night. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were also in the crowd. I'm fortunate to say 'I was there" 👍

@Amanda Lewington it's great who we were all massive fans of other artists, yet its Queen who stick in our minds fir their performance. Especially when we thought everyone had 20 minutes on stage, yet Adam Ant sang Vive Le Rock then went off.
@Ken Dodd's Tickling Stick , we were probably on the same train. Was a big deal for a 15 year old Falkirk laddie 🙂 £25 was dear for tickets but £1.50 for a beer was mental. Watched Queen's set from a bar in the stands, looking down at the crowd was amazing.
No covers! Check the author on each piece. All 4 wrote hits and are in the song writer's hall of fame as individuals. Crazy Little Thing Called Love is all Freddie's. Radio GAGa was Roger's creation, inspired by his young son. Lady Gaga was a big fan and took her stage name from the song. Most of the cups are tea with lemon or honey for his throat.
Peter Hince, his roadie said they could barely hear each other as the sound was so deafening. They communicated through gestures and glances.
The half stand allowed full stage movement and also exended his movement range and visibility to the audience

I'm not surprised it was deafening!!! My mum was less than 4 miles away from Wembley at the time and could hear the crowd in the distance.
One time Freddie was asked what instrument he plays and his response was “the crowd.”
Crazy Little Thing Called Love is not a cover, it is there a song Freddy wrote it in the bathtub in 10 minutes as a tribute to Elvis. Also did you notice a Brian May switch his guitars three times in the song. Best live performance ever, best band ever. Freddie ruled that day, he will forever be be my favorite love them to pieces!! ❤️❤️

Freddie's vocals are even more impressive when you realize he had a throat infection at the time. He powered through anyway and gave what most people consider the best twenty minute performance in rock history. RIP Freddie.
There were no covers, they rarely sang anything they hadn't written themselves. Two tracks from Dr Sir Brian May, one from Roger Taylor, and the rest written by Freddie, In this set nothing from John Deacon catalogue, they all sang, played different instruments, and Fred with his microphone stand when they first started he joined Roger and Sir Brian back in 69 and in 70 Queen began with a different bassist, they started as the four I grew up with 1971 and yes the mic stand broke instead of fixing it or asking for a different one Fred just carried on and this became his trademark, and he did this set against doctors orders he actually had a throat infection, and they rehearsaled for a week
I've read that Freddie said of his throat at this show that it felt like he was gargling with broken glass. And he still sounds amazing.

The broken microphone was a great prop and Freddie used it for all sorts! Great show and only 20 minutes - imagine this level of music for their usual 2 hour shows!

Not an Elvis cover but an homage to Elvis. Freddie wrote this in ‘79, Elvis died in ‘77.
Spike Edney is most likely playing backup on piano. He toured with them so Freddie could work the stage more.
Freddie really was one of a (very special) kind. Musical genius, vocally gifted, played some instruments, great entertainer and performer and a wicked, sassy humor. What a combination.
Brian said that they had no sound check for this performance and that they couldn't really hear each other on stage, but Queen uses so many signals between each other when they are performing that they managed to hold it together. Also, it was Queen's sound crew who handled the sound for the whole concert. Once early on, Queen were doing a performance and when Freddie grabbed the mic and it came away from the stand. Like the boss performer he was, and knowing that the show must go on, Freddie just went with it without even a hesitation. He liked the freedom it gave him to move around and how it became sort of a prop. He decided to keep it and it became his signature. Later on when wireless mics came out, Freddie continued with the stand and complained that he really did miss the cord. I love this performance, I have seen it so many times and watched it on TV the day that it happened. Actually, Freddie wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" as a tribute to Elvis long after Elvis had already passed. He wrote it in 20 minutes while taking a bath. If you pay attention, you will see that Brian plays 3 different guitars in this song: acoustic, Stratocaster and his own Red Special that he built with his dad when he was a teen from junk they had laying around the house. He still uses that guitar almost exclusively in all his concerts. That is Spike Edney, a multi-instrumentalist, often referred to as the 5th member of Queen, on the piano, during "Crazy Little Thing..". Thank you for your reaction.
They chose popular tracks for this VERY SPECIAL purpose from their discography to be appreciated by fans of any age any place in the world. Their time ,,,limit was20 min…John Deacon wrote many hits but their perfect selection didn’t include one of his. He didn’t mind. Cause they decided to include a new song…Hammer To Fall. The beauty of those great Queen guys was how well they worked together.
My cousin held a Barbeque party that day and I got roped in to do the cooking.
They took the TV out of the kitchen door to watch the concert and I got tipsy on wine while watching |Freddy. God knows what the food tasted like but I loved the concert and Queen and had a great time.

this has been acknowledged by the music industry to be the best live rock performance in history. Nothing to date has replaced it and i hope never will. I watched this on TV and it was watched by approx 1.8 billion people world wide. Live aid was a concert where all well known stars performed for free to raise money for a famine in Africa. RIP Freddie Darling.

the Best 25 minutes in music history Still to this day .... listen to the crowd singing right from the start and it was not a "Queen" Crowd.. they were there for live aid queen were not even on the list untill 2 weeks before the concert. and think how good he sounds LIVE with NO Autotune whatsoever.... name 1 artist from today that can do this ?. over 80,000 people in wembly stadium and watched on TV by over a billion people....

I read somewhere recently that when they were remastering a Queen album, somebody suggested they try the autotune. The autotune could not operate with Freddie's voice. It could not operate with Freddie's vibrato.
@@mbsheisey I don't think that's true, since remasters are supposed to be, well, remasters. Simply the process of creating new masters for the songs so that they sound clearer. If anything was changed from the original source, it would be a remix.
It's also worth mentioning that Queen Productions love to doctor their live albums. Live Killers? Almost everything in it is overdubbed; Live At The Rainbow? Back in 1992 it was first released as part of the Box Of Tricks LP and it was riddled with overdubs and pitch correction, the Fairy Fellers Master Stroke performance from the Box Of Tricks LP and the current official Live At The Rainbow release still has these blatant pitch corrections. Autotune will work just fine on Freddie, it's just that autotune shouldn't be used on Freddie, it's why I dread future Queen releases since they are absolutely, absolutely going to use autotune.
You will never get another concert like this because there will never be another Queen…or Freddie, they were special together, magical, and of course Freddie was the best frontman ever to live on this planet…❤ he is one of the most amazing singer / performer ever…Not to mention his wonderful sense of humor, he’s playful and cute, the half mic stand is his signature-early on he broke the mic stand, he always loved running around the stage, so, he just kept going with the half mic stand, he has so much energy , passion and fun on stage, always…a wonderful man, he loved his audience, so missed ❤
They had 20 minutes to capture a diverse crowd that had been there all day listening to various performers and bands. Genius selection of songs, Freddie's special genius of breaking down that barrier between the performer and the audience, it's an incredible exemplar of bonding with the audience. Freddie sometimes looks like he wants to fly right off that stage into the crowd.

"probably fake beer"...this was '85, that was real beer, real singers, and the best live performance ever given.
This was a brilliant day of live music. It was kicked off by Status Quo with Rocking All Over The World, and I just knew this was going to be an epic gig. This was not even a Queen gig as they were only persuaded to appear at the last moment, by which time all the tickets had been sold. Apparently when Freddie was conducting the crowd, this was unrehearsed and Brian May was thinking "Where is Freddie going with this?! We're performing live in front of 80,000 people, plus another billion on live TV all over the world. What could possibly go wrong?!" When they finished and were walking off stage, David Bowie was waiting in the wings to follow them, and he just said "You bastards!" To be fair, Bowie also did a great set, and was possibly one of the few artists who could follow Queen. It's a day I will remember fondly for ever.

I watched the entire concert televised live. Australia did a show too earlier that day. It was a wonderful time to be alive. So many great artists.
I still get amazed that just 3 guys (usually) play instruments and can accomplish so much. But when Freddie plays piano and adds to the three, they are beyond outstanding. Have loved them since 1974. Have seen them twice in the US. Best concerts ever and I've been to hundreds.

This is the only band in history where every band member wrote multiple number 1 songs. John Deakin was a world class base guitarist. Freddie wrote a pretty thing called love. it was his tribute to Elvis. Queen still perform with Adam Lambert and are still a wonderful band. Lots of gigs on youtube.
Even before watching this video, I'll say the only thing I'm going to say. I watched the entire run of Queen. Beginning to end. No other rock musician has ever known how to control a crowd like Freddie Mercury.
Freddie always had the mic without the stand. It was his “gimmick”. Very early on one broke off the stand and he didn’t miss a beat and continued to sing with the pole attached. He kept it that way. He always played “Air guitar” with it.

Honestly, I'm kinda shocked nobody else does it because just holding a microphone to your face has always felt weird to me. Holding with one had means you probably need to do something expressive with the other one and holding with 2 hands low key kinda looks silly. The half mic stand is basically a prop for your other hand to work around. Think of it like Freddie's personal Version of a fidget spinner, it's not necessary, but it gives him something to do while guitar solos are going and gives him something else to work around when he's singing.
I have been a big Queen fan since I was ten. I was thirteen when Freddie passed and I still remember that day like yesterday. You are right that it's fake beer. Freddie had a shore throat and had somekind of honeydrink in it. Still you wouldn't notice. He was such a performer. You live forever in our hearts Freddie! Love you forever!
Queen didn’t do covers. The only time I know of is when Freddie individually did The pretender. He wrote Crazy Little Thing called Love as a tribute to Elvis.

A lot of people don't know Freddie Mercury had perfect pitch. He played the piano and guitar as well as singing. At this concert he came out sick with his throat. Her doctor advised her not to sing. Without being 100%, it was the best concert of the night. Absolutely insane.
Queen had the advantage of playing arenas and huge venues around the world. Freddie always managed to have great audiance participation...They also rehearsed this performance to the point they had it down to the second. A great performance!
To this day still remember the first thrill of his walking out on stage. I was in Philidelphia and we were as enraptured and engaged as the English crowd. We could watch them and they watched us on screens above the stage....it was true magic and the best 22 minutes of music I ever heard.
4:45 Freddie Mercury was the Real Deal. He could Sing, Play Piano, Play Guitar, Crowd Control at level Infinity, He wrote his own Music AND had a degree in graphic design and illustration, plus he wrote his own songs. I would love to go back in time and let Freddie know that 32 years after his passing young people are STILL listening.
Freddie Mercury was one of a kind performer. I wished I was there to witness the greatest live rock performance of all time. This was the moment when UK was ruled by another Queen.
I was already a big time fan of them and I was so hyped with them playing at Live Aid. I watched from minute one and couldn't wait until Queen would play. I sat on the couch and next I sat on the floor, and then I crawled closer and just wanted to crawl into the tv 😂
And the entire time they played I cried, well tears were just rolling down my eyes without me realizing it!
There still isn't a week that goes by without me playing a Queen song, they have become a part of my life!

Freddie was more than a singer, more than a performer. Freddie was an Entertainer. He could hold a crowd of tens of thousands in the palm of his hand and loved every second on stage. Especially since at this concert I think he had already had his HIV diagnosis.

Freddie was singing for the first time with the band in public- the mic stand accidentally broke so Freddie performed with the half stand- he kept and it’s made history- I love your reactions- yes it was a fabulous time to be alive- I am 71 and still listen to Freddie and Queen everyday- I’ve been a fan since 1976
You may want to check out the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, also done at Whembley. A lot of stars came out to support Queen in a full show.... my absolute favorite is Annie Lennox stepping in for Freddie to join David Bowie in "Under Pressure", and oddly, Liza Minelli leading everyone who performed in the last number of "We Are the Champions"... I think it is the ending song, like you aren't done at a Billy Joel concert until Piano Man plays.
John was always an anchor behind Freddie when he was at the piano. Yes, no ear pieces.

Sang fabulously, piano, wrote, produced, … they all had great parts in putting together all their songs. They were a real team. He always tried to tell interviewers they were equal in the group, all four. He was only the lead SINGER, not the leader of the group.
He had a vocal issue just before performing but like the professional he is he walked out on stage and owned it like a true rock God would ....tip of the hat and a nod of approval from me you're still my number 1 frontman

There were wireless mics in the 80s, but they were analogue and prone to interference.
I remember staying up all night here in California to watch the whole concert. It was broadcasted live all over the world! Love Grandma Debbie
We don’t have shows like this anymore because we don’t have artists and bands that can pull it off anymore.
That's true because they are so into auto tuning that when they sing live the sound is not there. Also singing in the open you need to be a real singer because you don't have the walls or ceiling for the sound to bounce off. That's why 80s and earlier music was better true singing artist and musicians.
I remember this day well: the concert was broadcast world wide and at least one third of the world's population tuned in for at least 5 minutes throughout the day. I saw Queen live on their 'News of the world ' tour: just unforgettable!

No it's not a cover, Freddie wrote this song as a tribute to Elvis.He even does an Elvis impression. He did one as a tribute to John Lennon in the John Lennon style called Love is real.
Crazy thing is this wasn’t a queen crowd there were dozens of bands some even bigger than queen at the time. But Freddie won over the crowd and had them singing along.
Also the half mic stand was a signature of Freddie that happened by accident in one of their early sets but he liked using it as a prop and kept doing it throughout the years. Also you can tell he’s playing to the camera a lot this concert was a milestone in that it was simulcast worldwide with bands in the UK and US taking turns performing
No covers, 'Crazy Little Thing' was 100% a Freddie original, the only time Queen would do covers was at the end of the gig when they had some fun with their Rock n Roll medley.
The crowd at Live Aid was around 70,000 which for Queen wasn't particularly big, considering they hadn't long returned from South America where they'd played in front of crowds in excess of 250,000!
Apparently he had a bad throat and was told by a doctor not to do this concert. However Queen did and smashed it. Every performer had an allotted time and would be shut off if they overran. However, Queen finished exactly to the second. Every member of Queen wrote songs and they also all had University degrees.
They were actually 8 seconds over but Bob Geldoff, who organized Live Aid, wasn't going to cut them off because he had begged Freddie to do it as Queen had initially declined.
I was 31 years old and watched this on TV with my 13-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter in 1985. They loved it and so did I.

It's always so.much fun to watch someone experiencing Queen and Freddie for the first time. This was particularly enjoyable because the musician is so young . I found myself smiling throughout. Great job!! Love to know that Freddie continues to be a force for enjoyment.
There were about 72,000 at Wembley and also nearly 90,000 of us at Kennedy stadium in Philadelphia at the same time. Fantastic!

I'm a year late, and am still watching so I haven't seen comments, but: if you go back and watch really early Queen shows, Freddie always used that half mic-stand, it was his thing since forever.

We’d been up to Wembley during the day (no tickets) but could hear the concert outside the stadium. Got back well in time to watch this live on the TV. Great times ! (although not for those who the cause was for). Absolutely unique event back then.

Sat and watched a more technical analysis of this performance by Fil from Wings of Pegasus. They had a 20 minute slot. From getting on to leaving it was 20 minutes and 25 seconds. Despite all the ad libs they were bang on. These guys were masters of their craft in every way. I remember being glued to the telly that afternoon.
Do not say stuff 13 years before I was born! It makes me feel ancient, truly old! Queen we’re and always will be the greatest musicians ever! No tricks, no effects just pure talent! Did you know Brian May and his father built that guitar from the ground up!
Also, if you want to see the modern version, Queen + Adam Lambert performed this exact set for Fire Fight Australia in 2020.

Years later, at a rock concert, someone played Queen to warm up the crowd, Nearly all of them sang up a storm because the music was so good.
It was a Green Day concert. When I feel the need for a quick mood boost I watch it. You can feel the love for Freddie and the music
Live aid was not just a rock concert. It was the first time that people in the USA and UK could watch rock acts by satellite simultaneously and was the brainchild of Bob Geldoff, pop singer and Irish man.

Using the bottomless mic stand was his gimmick as he told a friend once. The story is that during one of his very early performances he couldn’t get the mic stand height to adjust how he wanted and finally just yanked it right off its base. ♥️🎤👨🏻🦱
As soon as you said I wanna be there when they were all clapping in sync it's mostly because nobody was holding a smart phone 😅 just enjoying to be alive and be part of it and soaking up the power of unity. ❤️🔥
Watched this live back in ‘85…..remember getting goosebumps during Radio GaGa….it was not long after the original video where the crowd is seen clapping just like at Live Aid.
I remember tuning in that day for the Black Sabbath reunion but this part with Queen stole the show
About the mic stand: When they started in the 70s, live performances were very static and mic stands were super commonly used. During one gig, Freddie was going a little too wild and accidentally broke the mic stand. He noticed how much fun his new found toy was and kept using mics with half a mic stand attached to them. Queen was one of the bands that helped created live performances as we know them today. All the action, running around on stage and stuff, didn't really exist before. Queen helped to make live peformances a whole lot more fun.
Queen the band, Freddy especially, was the pinnacle of music. In a time when I was young, and I'm 55 now. They sang this when I was young. It's good that younger people still appreciate it. Freddy was a music god!
That was the Greatest moment in music history! The British bands and American bands got together and had a concert going in Wembly and one in Philidelphia PA. Phill Collings played both. He played in Wembley first then flew an SST jet to Philly. 16 Hrs of music. I believe they even had a concert going in Austrailia. It was EPIC!! I was just barely in my 20's. Freddy had complete command of that audience!
The energy was electric! I watched it live. It was also aired all across the world in order to raise funds for Africa's starving people. It made such a difference here! Ethiopia got a lot of relief.

I loved seeing your reaction! I saw this live on MTV when I was 15, and it was BREATHTAKING! It really is so sad that your generation will never have this kind of life performance. Thank God for the internet! Now, everyone generation can enjoy the ICON, that was Freddy!
Another cool thing that happened on that Saturday, was seeing Phil Collins live in London. Then 4 or 5 hours later seeing Phil Collins live from Philadelphia. This is back when you could fly to the US in 3 hours.
This was a huge fundraiser for HIV/AIDS, I remember watching it on TV. There upwards of 75K there. Queen actually wasn't at first slated to perform. It was only once he found out about it that he made sure they were there. Each iconic band had 20 minutes to perform, Freddie was actually not well prior to this show due to having AIDS himself, although here he still looked remarkable, so sad that within a few years that horrendous disease got him. He was so incredible!
During the piano beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody, just after the second verse begins, he blew his mother a kiss, something he promised her he would do. He passed away just 6 years later (actually the day before my 27th birthday in Nov 1991). I loved watching your reactions to this incredible

You have seen the movie - but it is not a documentary .This was a fundraiser for the famine in Ethiopia! Freddie had a throat condition - but he wasn't diagnosed with AIDS till 1987! and he died in November 1991. Blowing the kiss happened in the movie - - who knows what really happened? I love the movie - but go on watching the documentaries - here on CZcams - being critical - not all you see is the truth.The huge fundraiser for HIV/AIDS was the memorial concert in 1992 - find it on CZcams.
Great reaction. Not to make you jealous but I was in that crowd. I was 16 years old and it was the first time I had ever heard Queen live. I was mesmerised, we all were. There was 72,000 of us in the crowd. We also didn't know whether Queen would be appearing as they weren't on the official line up (tickets etc). We all went crazy when they came on. Paul Gambaccini a very well known American-British radio presenter was back stage with all the other artists watching Queen on TV screens and he describes how everyone knew amongst them that Queen had STOLEN the show!! David Bowie was due on next and he went to Freddie's trailer afterwards and apparently said "how the f**k am I going to top that" and apparently Elton John said to Freddie "you bastards you've stole the show" ..... Freddie knew it too. It was an AMAZING day and one I'll never forget. The tickets were £25.00 which in them days was a lot of money. I have been a fan ever since and I am now 54!! I saw them live twice the following year in July 1986 at Wembley and Freddie's EVER last live performance with Queen in August 1986 at Knebworth .... RIP dahling Freddie you were and still are a LEGEND !!!! 💛💛💛💛
I'm a fan too - but I can't afford the tickets so I have never seen them live - they never visits Denmark often - and the last time they did - I was ill. I don't think I will ever see them live - so long live CZcams . - and the video's and CD's that I have - . Well I talk about Queen + Adam Lambert of cause. How lucky you were to see Freddie live - I am a fan too - being 72.
