Does heat wrap work?

- Decided to experiment on my BMS Dual Air Intake using Design Engineering Reflect-A-GOLD Heat wrap on my intake tubes and heat shields to see if it really works. Before using the wrap I heat soaked the car and took temperature readings of the tubes and air filters. Then wrapped both the shields and tubes, ran the car up to op temp let it idle for a little while then took temp shots again and the results were pretty surprising! Heres a link to the reflect a gold tape: www.designengineering.com/ref...

Umm is it just me? How is testing the outside of the intake tell you anything? You would need to test the inside that’s being protected by the tape.
I’m pretty sure a car like that will actually tell you what your intake air temp is. Check that.
LOL! Exactly!
He was showing a difference from the intake to the intake tube to see if there was a temperature fluctuation down stream of the actual intake
Love the content man, your c43 is a beauty. Subscribed and looking forward to more videos!
Fahim Nazari thanks for the support man!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Im in NJ too. I have a '15 E400 coupe. Im about to get this intake and a tune. My CPO & extended warranty is finally done. Lol. It looks like Ill be getting some dei gold tape. 10* cooler intake temp is actually pretty huge. Thanks again.
Good to see that its doing something. Even tho it’s not the most scientific test with a heat gun taking temps of the outer surface. Maybe getting an obd scanner to see the actual IAT’s would be more accurate. Anyways you had a great opportunity to actually see the difference due to having two intake tubes. Compared to a lot of us having only one. Should have only wrapped 1x tube/heatshield and compare it to the non wrapped, given that you ran out of tape anyways
Best part is the the Jb4 App that controls my tuner shows your IAT 😂 didn’t think of it until after everything was wrapped and back together! May have to revisit this one to truly compare.
awesome! nice bench mat! even if it's by a couple degrees it's still helping
The way the filters look and sit is so satisfying
Should get a vented hood so it's not just sucking in hot air from around the engine ... that's such a bad design for filter location
I’m getting this for my intake
In order to see if the air is actually cooler you'll have to check the temp of the air going through the intake as the heat wrap will still be hot from the engine thats why you didnt see much difference. There are vehicles that actually have air intake sensors to read the air temp.
Nice looking car : )
Phil England Thank you!
I think you shold worry more for your exposed air filters that soak hot air from the engine bay that those 2 pipes.
Thanks for the video
Nice video, gonna share with a few C43 groups.
Use your JB4 to also do a test of the IAT too
Joe B. Thanks man! Appreciate it! I know lol I totally forgot it shows it right on the damn app until after I made the video 😂
You have make the second mesure outside with a little wind that explains the difference.
And the really useful measure is inside the hose not the outside and more better the measure in same time that you drive for have the exact temperature do you have.
I believe with the APP torque and with a ELM 327 maybe you can have the temperature from the MAF
Yes
@@HardHatExotics I have edit the first message.
Sorry for my bad English
Why you didn't go with the silver the silver tape reflect more light and heat better than gold it's like platinum silver
I used to heat wrap my C63S intakes using DEI, the outside temperatures of the wrap dropped only a little bit while the intake air temperature didn't change too much, so I would say this DEI wrap is pretty useless.
Where even a couple degrees of difference matters is with forced induction. Even dropping two degrees off temps on my E63 adds power and has the turbos work less. Compressing cooler air is more efficient, so every little bit helps, especially on a car like M157 E63s where that engine bay gets pretty toasty.
Would venting the ambient temps from the engine bay help more than the tape? Absolutely, but most higher end performance cars don't have aftermarket quality hoods and it's also not advisable or desired to cut and modify hoods on such vehicles either.
The optimum taping strategy is the entire intake piping and then also the exterior of the air boxes too.
Just thanks was really a upset at the end barley heard the temps .did you say 112'?
Yes I do believe that’s what it was, it’s been a while ago now.. Very upset with myself for not checking the actual internal air temp on my JB4 app before and after the wrap install tho..
You look exactly like kid in terminator series
Do they fit a 2020 c43? If so can I get a link to buy them please ?
Señor Lopez Heat wrap is universal and works on everything so yes it would. Design Engineering 010396 Reflect-A-GOLD High-Temperature Heat Reflective Adhesive Backed Roll, 2" x 15' Roll www.amazon.com/dp/B0039Z5TYU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RTj.Eb1PKTJG2
HardHatExotics Thank you I appreciate it!
Señor Lopez Welcome bud!
Would u say that jb4 is better than Weistec as far as tuning goes for the car
Im honestly not familiar with Weistec or any of their products so I couldn't say lol
I just just purchased a c43 also and I have Weistec down pipes but I am getting reallly bad heat soak around 80 or 90 mph I live in Maryland so it gets extremely humid over the summer
What do u suggest if u don’t mind
M M What’s happening at those speeds that’s leading you to believe you have an issue?
It’s almost like the car stops accelerating as hard!
Awesome car. Ever consider the AMR tuning? 90-100 more hp, torque and more burbles.
David Rivera Thanks man! Yea I was looking at them when I first got my car but just went with the cheaper JB4. But I’ve been eyeing it up more and more lately lol!
@@HardHatExotics Have you noticed any lack of pops when you're using the JB4 when compared to stock? The stock map sounds better than map 1-3 for my 450 at least :l
Brandon Y not that I’ve really noticed at all but the next time I’m out in it I’ll play around with it see if I notice anything.
HardHatExotics instagram.com/c_chan450?igshid=1vnuj7utyhhep check his page out. I’m so tempted to place my tune order too.
David Rivera That’s badass, yea AMR definitely seems to be the most powerful tune out there for the 450/43. Only thing holding me back is I don’t know how the reliability is.. I need to look into that more first.
I planned on doing it on my ek civic just to get it perfectly tuned. When I upload a video to this channel it’s gonna be the cleanest civic in the world
Lol he said cleanest civic
That’s a “clean lawnmower”
Oh the things you see in the comments are gold
Bro, you cannot take a measurement in the garage, take a measurement outdoors and then compare them.
the purpose of the tape is to protect the colder outside intake air from being warmed up by the under hood heat on its way to the motor
your intakes suck the hottest (lowest density) air available on the car under hood / exhaust manifolds and funnels it direct into the motor in this case the tape is actually holding in the heat not keeping it out
That's what I've been thinking since I've been seeing these... Like exhaust wrap it prevents the heat from resonating by keeping it in the pipe right? So it's not really good for an intake is what i understand.
This thing is too quiet no sir I like the hellcat charger instead
