  • The Lexus GX470 suspension conversion from air bags to coil springs should be the first modification every owner should do. It also happens to be relatively easy and affordable to do at home. There are many kits available for the GX470 platform. You also have the option of putting together your own. However you choose to do it, once it’s done you won’t regret it.

    This is a good video. I'm a CZcams DIY video junkie and this is one of the best most descriptive videos I have ever seen. All done in a way that real people that don't have a million dollar garage (like me). The part I liked most was the attention you paid to the spring perches, and even the hole left inside... I am about to tackle this job and there are plenty of videos out there but you are the only one to show all of this in detail. Simply outstanding content! Thank you.

      @@Pwofese my 470 after completion of the spring install doesn’t look overly jacked up in the rear. Bearing in mind I did not install the pucks that are to help anchor the base of the spring and do raise the vehicle more.
      The springs if they did settle it was negligible and haven’t noticed a difference. The ride is excellent and although I don’t drive off road I have and do push the limits of the springs over speed bumps and transitions in road surfaces with no adverse effects.

    For most GX owners, the bumped from behind feeling at red lights is the Driveshaft needing to be greased. The permanent fix is to replace the driveshaft to the newer version but greasing the joint with the extension slide does the trick for a few months.

    Its’s been a while since we removed the bags and installed springs on our GX470. Here is a quick update!
    The springs are holding up great and all tho they have settled in, the rear of the GX is slightly higher than the front. This isn’t a deal breaker to me but if you are super detail oriented this might annoy you.
    The ride is great! We would never want to put bags back on our car. We have logged a few thousand miles now and we have no regrets about removing the air bag system. On road and off road these springs should serve you well, unless you plan to do some extreme off-roading / over-landing.
    If you do plan on doing a heavy duty over-landing build , only then would I suggest you look into stiffer springs.
    The extra weight of a RTT and storage system in the back could make your GX bottom out on challenging roads / terrain Hope this update helps anyone looking to do this modification. You can do it!

      I replaced my shocks first then went with the spring conversion at a later date. I was able to install the springs by removing the bottom shock bolts on both sides. I then had a helper step on the side I needed clearance on to insert the spring And it was just enough clearance to pop it in. This is of course with standard mounting hardware, not the base parts that were used on this build.

I was going to go in that direction and get the drive shaft and bearings etc changed. My GX was doing it really bad at every single stop light some times multiple times. Since I've changed my suspension it hasn't done it a single time. It's been several months now of daily driving and multiple road trips to the mountains in our GX. We haven't had one bump since. Maybe there are multiple causes. If it resurfaces I will make sure everyone knows and I will make a vlog about it. Thank you again for your contribution!

      @@KRTLyfe Whoa!!! I have read all over and you are the first to state your problem that is exactly like mine. Not the typical driveline clunk where it bumps when stopping and moving again, I don't have that. I have what you had. Multiple bumps when stopped. Heck, it even does it when the car is off and has been sitting for a few minutes. Have you learned anything else about it?

  • @TickleFingers
    @TickleFingers Před 4 lety +4

    That "bump" sensation you're describing is common on 4th gen 4Runner and 1st Gen GX470 120 platform. It's the drive shaft slip yoke. It needs to be greased. When you stop the axle and suspension load up against the yoke. When you release the brake or the yoke gets enough tension and then releases, you get the clunk or bump sensation. It's coming through the driveline. There are zerks to lube the driveshafts and there are many different arguments on what type of grease should be used for specific zerks. Go by the manufacturers recommended grease types of read up on what people are using to help stop their clunks.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Před 4 lety +4

      Tickle Fingers yeah I read all that on the forums etc before I changed my bags out. A lot of people seemed to say the bump came back after greasing. Immediately after changing to springs ours hasn’t done it not once. Which leads me to believe the bump was coming from the vehicle trying to correct its ride height, since my driver side was leaking so bad mine was doing it at every stop. Literally hasn’t done it a single time since swapping to springs. I wonder if any of those others experiencing the clunk were on bags or springs? If mine comes back I will definitely let you know but so far it’s been clunk free! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💯

    Added this to the strut master video, which I used in addition to yours. Thanks for the help on pulling fuses.
    A couple of points: the existing strut nuts should be soaked as early in advance with PB. Having a strap wrench was mandatory to remove the existing struts. Extra information about getting the compressed springs into place with spring compressors on them, and in an orientation where you can remove them after they’re in place would have been very helpful. I started around 9am and finished this job at 7pm - if you’re not solid with doing car work, find a mechanic in advance that will install parts they didn’t supply. I could only find one Toy-Lexus mechanic in Denver Colorado who would install and he was booked out for 3 weeks. Decided to do it myself with a buddy. Love the ride, it feels like a massive improvement, but the instructions seemed to gloss over some of the hardest items.

    Hey there. After buying my GX470 and repairing the air suspension system twice and having it fail a third time, I have decided to change over to coils. It really does seem to be the best option. Anyway, I have a question regarding the Metaltech "Secondary Spring Isolators" sold in the Stage 2 and Stage 3 kits. With the Unity coils, are the secondary isolators required (these are the cone shaped rubber parts that are in the stage 2 and 3 metaltech conversion kits)? It doesn't appear that you used them in your video, but so many other people on forums keep stating that the top-of-coil cone shaped isolators are necessary... I'm about to do this conversion and ordered all of the parts, but could save myself some money by returning those secondary isolators if they're not needed or can't be used in conjunction with the Unity coils. Thanks for your time! Great video!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Před 4 lety

      Jerrid Higgins I’ve seen people do this job on CZcams with out using any additional isolators. I would say if you plan on lifting the vehicle a lot or plan on doing any heavy off-roading go for it. If you plan to stay on asphalt most of the time I would think they aren’t necessary.

    But question about the front. Did you end up raising the front at all after putting the springs on, or did you leave it alone? I was trying to look at your other videos and couldn’t really tell a difference, the front and rear looked pretty level to me.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Před 3 lety +2

      I’ve done a bit of reading on this and Toyota does this on purpose. The forward rake is supposed to improve handling characteristics during normal driving and when the vehicle is fully loaded.
      Some comments I have read say leveling the vehicle out will cause handling issues when fully loaded. I never changed mine because ours was always loaded with a RTT, plus humans, plus gear lol. Initially it looked funny unloaded but, I got accustomed to it really quick.
      We would do 9 hour drives on a regular with our GX, so the last thing I wanted was poor handling.

Since you're removing the control for the shocks (i.e., comfort to sport dial), should we make sure that it's in the setting that we permanently want the truck to be in before disabling the dash lights? Or does the truck go to a specified shock setting once the controls are removed so it doesn't matter?
